1.
Am I supposed to be flattered or appalled? --- I wouldn't mind assisting with the missions for the Anthology Archipelago, after all I love to post my stories there. Tis my favorite place on OB.
Hey, it's a really good skill. ;P It's automatic, and it makes the otherwise physically weak Occultist have at least some chances in solo-battles. And of course you can assist with the missions, I'd be honored if you would! ;D If you do, be sure to make missions for Occultists involving the Voodoo-Priestesses.
 2.
- which they will if they're numbered in the order they are created in.
Actually, at this moment the missions are numbered vaguely by the level of jobs required. I still don't see the problem you're seeing...
Edit:[/B'] Premonition? That's low.
Are you talking about what the skill does or the fact that it's named after Prem? ;P
 3.
To avoid confusion, perhaps it would be better to only number those missions that are common to all job classes ? at least, those from the same alignment ? and use the individual mission names for the titles of class-specific missions. That way we wouldn't have Spammers going on their first quest looking like it's their third.
I don't agree. The mission numbers are there solely to keep track of who has completed what missions in the Character Profiles. Without them, it would be a chore to do that. Besides, all of the missions I've come up now are job-specific. There's only one that's open to all of the four orderly jobs, and one that's open to both chaotic jobs. I intend to make more of those kind, however. I've also planned the first Story Mission, where players will have a chance to go head-to-head for the first time. I'm not revealing anything more, but here's an excerpt from the Rules that I wrote about Story Missions:
Besides normal missions, there will be rare Story Missions that will be open to all players. Those Missions will have huge rewards, but they are also hard to survive through. If your character dies during one, you cannot return to the mission like typically.
And here's a chapter on dying in the game:
When facing Viruses on the field or during missions, your character might meet it?s end by losing all of it?s HP. However, your game is not over if that happens. If you?re lucky enough to have a friend with you, he or she can revive your character with specific skills or items. If no-one?s around, your character will return to the place it started the whole adventure completely recovered, but only after five posts have been posted after the death scene. Having to wait five posts is a small punishment considering that you won?t actually lose anything.
Then some good news: if everything goes smoothly, I think we're ready to start the beta-testing as soon as next weekend! Yay for that! XD
 4. Come on, flowers, it's your turn now. I would hate it if each person took a week to post in this challenge...
 5. Guess what, guys? I have a new beginner job for you! I think this will be the last one of that kind (unless something really cool comes up). Six jobs to choose from at the start should be just fine, but the advanced jobs could use some more options. Anyway, the job is called Occultist (inspired by Jokopoko's Anthology Archipelago & Voodoo-Priestesses), and it's based on from mysticism, fortune-telling, gothic scene and New Age movements. Take a look: Occultist has found enlightenment from New Age movements, which makes it a repulsive job choice for law-abiding citizens of Ob. It uses blind faith as an excuse to do anything it wills. - Basic HP: 3, Basic MP: 8, Basic Attack Power: 1, Basic Magic Power: 5 Weapons: - Bone (lv1, Atk +1, Mag +1, Break Possibility 1/10) - Wicked Wand (Lv3, Atk +2, Mag +4, dark element) - Tarot Card (Lv5, Atk +4, Mag +6, spirit element) - Crystal Ball (Lv7, Atk +6, Mag +10) - Druid Sickle (Lv9, Atk +12, Mag +13) Armor: - Black Cape (Lv2, HP +6, MP +4) - Baddie Hoodie (Lv4, HP+13, protects from ?Stun?) - Gothic Robe (Lv6, HP +15, MP +12, nullifies dark element) - Wizard?s Cloak (Lv8, HP+22, MP +25, protects from ?Muteness?) - KKK Cloak (lv10, HP +26, MP +28) New Age: - Premonition (Lv1, automatically be the first to act in a battle) - Ghastly Touch (Lv2, +3 spirit elemental damage) MP -4 - Bad Sign (Lv3, +3 dark elemental damage and ?Curse?-status) MP -6 - Blood Rite (Lv4, drain 8 HP from target to self) MP -8 - Scream From Beyond (Lv5, +6 sound elemental damage up to two targets) MP -9 - Brainwash (Lv6, transfer 15 MP from target to self) MP -12 I felt that Spammer would need a more magic-oriented "chaotic" job to it's side, so here it has one. Also, many of the Occultist's Missions are linked to our notoriously beloved Raiha the Enchantress: Mission #4: The Apprentice Location: N00b Mountain, N00b Keep Prerequisite: Occultist Lv1 Description: ?You seek infinite powers? You?ve come to the right mistress... If you wish me to teach you, go fetch me three Bones for my potion.? ? Raiha the Enchantress Goal: Acquire 3 Bones from Baby Skeletors down at the Prisons of Azerbaijan Reward: Spellbook, 10 Experience & 20 OtakuBucks Btw, I'm in desperate need of new missions at this moment, so that's one area I could really use some help.
 6. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Will! You're saving me buttloads of work with these new locations! Would I dare to ask if you could perhaps make some missions for them, as well? Seeing as you kind of started it with the NPCs and all... Just follow the example I gave in my previous post. I decided to alter the formula for locations a little bit. Take a look at this: The N00b Mountain Description: This outback mountain is the den of outcasts and lowlifes. It lies on the northern outskirts of Ob. On top of the mountain is an old fortress of the Moderator Knights, which was abandoned and subsequently taken over by stray Spammers and Trolls. Law-abiding folk won’t find anything of use here. Locations: N00b Keep (building) – meet fellow outcasts and hear their latest devious plans. Training Grounds (field) – hone your battle-skills under the watchful eye of sadistic trainers (Viruses: Spambot Prototype) Prisons of Azerbaijan (dungeon) – beware of the ghosts that lie in these dungeons below the keep (Viruses: Cellshade, Mousewheel, Loveworm) Black Market (shop) – buy illegally gotten items and equipment, and don’t expect to get any change from your OtakuBucks. Slippery Slopes (field) – watch your step as you fight against the resident Viruses of the mountain (Viruses: Weed, Loveworm, Funny Bunny) As you can see, one town/region can now include four different types of locations: Buildings are important, inhabited constructions from where you can find NPCs but not Viruses (outside of special missions, that is). Shops are districts where you can buy and sell things, as well as find NPCs. List of what shop sells which items will come later. Field is an open outdoor area where you can freely fight Viruses specified in the description. Dungeon is a closed area indoors where you can also find Viruses to fight against. It should usually be a more challenging place than the nearby "field". Hope this division helps creating the locations!
 7. Thanks, Zeke, in advance for any help. Thanks, Jokopoko, for an excellent dungeon which will surely be seen in the game. Thanks, DB, for your support and interest for this game. And thanks, Allamorph, you're a tremendous help! ;D I've tweaked the Character Profile to be more clear, especially on behalf of statistics. Allamorph asked about the elements and statuses. I don't have a full list yet, since they can all still change. I can tell you the basics, though. Water is strong against fire which is strong against flower, right? Now if you attack with Fountain Pen (water elemental weapon) against a Hate Mail (currently a fire-elemental Virus), you'll do twice the damage. But if you try to cast Sakura Bud (a flower-elemental spell) against it, you will do zero damage. Furthermore, there are armor that can nullify certain elements, or even absorb them (turn damage into healing). Statuses are trickier. Currently I have configured seven negative statuses: Stun - makes target skip the next turn of attack, after which the status disappears Poison - takes away 3 HP from target every turn (post) until the status is healed or the target dies Blindness - makes target unable to see anything, thus preventing physical attacks (magic works just fine, however) until the status is healed Muteness - makes target unable to speak to anybody, thus preventing special skills and magic (physical attacks work in this case) until the status is healed Boredom - makes target tired of everything, preventing shopping, accepting missions and fighting (using items and talking are still possible), until healed (getting hit by "Laughter"-status when bored negates the effects of both) Laughter - makes target laugh incontrollably, preventing talking to anyone, shopping and accepting missions (using items and fighting are still possible), until healed (getting hit by "Boredom"-status when laughing negates the effects of both) Curse - negates target's element and positive status changes until healed Each of these statuses (except Stun) has corresponding items and spells that removes them from the character (eg. an Antidote removes "Poison" and a Speach Bubble removes "Muteness", see also Therapist's skills). Hope this answers to your questions about the subject, Allamorph! On another matter, here's the Bestiary in it's current form. These critters surely need some balancing, but I think they're varied enough from each other. If someone wants to add more Viruses to the list, be my guest! 8. I've been working with missions and the bestiary the whole morning, but apparently there cannot be enough of them. XP I've also got some balance issues with them (help, Allamorph!). Anyhow, here's the first draft of a Character Profile. All players will have this in a future Underground thread. These profiles are updated by the Gamemaster(s) whenever they change. 9. Now the most important part is done, as I have compiled the basic guidelines for this game. The list is still lacking on many part, and there are several references to things that don't yet exist (Region Threads, Character Profiles, Bestiary etc.), but I hope everyone gets the main idea of what the game system is all about from this. Here they are, The Rules. Welcome, brave adventurers, to the Kingdom of Ob, our beloved message board turned into a fantastic realm filled with mystery, magic and monsters. This is no ordinary Adventure Square game, but an honest attempt for a true MMORPG – a Massively Multiplayer Online RolePlaying Game. That’s why everyone who wants to join in must read the rules and regulations below with extra care. You need to know them in order to play – and enjoy – the game. General Advice: This game will span several threads. In the Adventure Square, we’ll have threads for different regions of the world. Your character will start out in one of those regions, and stay there until you find a way to travel to another. You can post into the game just like you usually post to RPGs: you can meet people, write up dialogue, get your character into trouble and out of it, make up fabulous plot twists etc. The difference is that you will have a whole system working on the background whatever you do. You can opt to explore the surroundings, engage in missions, battle malicious Viruses, team up with other players, but most importantly, upgrade your character and gain awesome new skills and equipment for it. To help you enjoy the game to it’s fullest, there will be several Gamemasters running the game. When in doubt, be sure to contact them and they will help you. Creating a Character: Like in almost every RPG here, there is a sign-up form for your character. You can fill it as you wish, but pay close attention to your choice of job. Unlike in other games, in this they are not just for flavor. Different jobs suit different types of players: you have to decide whether you want to deal direct physical damage, cast powerful spells, or maybe help others in need. Or you can go bad and join the outcasts. At first you have the five beginner jobs at your disposal, but as you progress through the game, you can unlock new, much more powerful jobs to play with. You start out with zero equipment, zero experience and zero money. You will have to work hard to collect those in your adventures, but eventually it will pay off as you find yourself above most other players, slaying monsters left and right, and enthralling yourself into advanced missions. Exploration: Your story begins in one of the starting towns (one in each region thread). There you can freely take on missions, shop for goods talk to NPCs and find allies to play with. The Gamemasters will reward diligent explorers with hidden treasures and secret missions. It’s about time to introduce “actions”. These are special things you can do only one per post, meaning that if you do one thing from the list below, you cannot do another in the same post. This is important: you must always remember to highlight your action, to make sure that the Gamemasters notice them. The different options for the one action are: - unlimited shopping (buying and selling items and equipment) - accepting a mission from an NPC (each region thread has a list of available missions and from who to get them in the first post) - using an item (you can only use one item per action) - attacking an enemy (see Battles) - performing a special ability (see Battles) Don’t worry if you accidentally post two actions in a post – the Gamemasters will surely let you know about it, as they keep track of every player and their moves. You of course don’t have to take any action in a post if you don’t want to. Inventory: On your adventure you will gain many items, weapons and armor, either by finding them, winning them from Viruses or missions, or buying them from shops. Everything you come to own will be put to your own inventory, visible at your Character Profile. You can use items straight from your Inventory (only one per post, remember), after which they will disappear from there. Equipment – weapons and amor – work differently though. You will have to equip them to use them. You can only equip one weapon and one armor at a time, and you better be clear about what you want to equip so the Gamemasters can put them into your Character Profile. Pay attention to the requirements on the equipment, though, since most are usable only by specific jobs after reaching specific levels. Weapons boost your attack power, and sometimes your magic power, while armor boosts your HP and MP (see Battles for explanation on the statistics). Missions: You can only complete each mission once, although you can retry in case you die during one. You can have several missions in progress at the same time, although your character can only be in one place at a time. Most missions have special prerequirements, though. Some are meant only for specific jobs, some require the character to be on a specific level, some ask for a specific item and then some can only be undertaken if several other missions are completed. Completing missions is worthwhile, since you gain special items, lots of experience and bagfuls of OtakuBucks (the currency of Ob) from them. The completed missions will also be marked to your Character Profile. Battles: Most missions involve battling monsters known as “Viruses” that are threatening the peace of Ob. Viruses can however be fought against outside of missions, as well, on fields and dungeons. If a location has Viruses in it, it will say so in the description of that place. In order to begin fighting with a Virus, you must simply say so in the post. Take heed, however, on the special turn order. If the Virus has a higher level than your character, it will take the initiative. If the levels are the same, or yours is higher, then you can attack first. Remember that you can only attack or perform a special ability once per post, as they take up your “action” for that post. The damage done to the Virus by your attack (as well as any side effects), will be determined by your statistics. The efficiency of hitting the enemy with your weapon is dependent on your attack power, while the effectiveness of an offensive special ability will depend on your magic power. Your other statistics are HP (Health Points) and MP (Mana Points). HP is the more essential one, since taking hits will consume it. If it reaches zero, your character will die. MP is consumed by using most special abilities, which take up different amounts of MP to use. The Viruses are controlled only by Gamemasters, so you will have to wait after taking your turn for the enemy to attack. You can see the statistics of each Virus by glancing at the Bestiary. Be sure not to engage with a Virus that is too much for you. Defeating a Virus will net you some experience and OtakuBucks, and sometimes a special item to go with them. The Gamemasters will notify you whenever that happens. Elements & Statuses: Fighting the Viruses isn’t always dependent on statistics and levels, though. Many Viruses have a specific element that is vulnerable to another element and strong against another. Luckily many special abilities, weapons and armor have elemental strenghts as well, so you can use them to your advantage. Here are the formulas for the two ranks of elements: Material Elements: Water > Fire > Flower > Earth > Sound > Air > Water Ethereal Elements: Light > Dark > Energy > Spirit > Light There are also multiple special statuses, with both negative and positive effects. Getting hit by a bad status might ruin up your chances alltogether, while a positive status change at the right time can be a lifesaver. Progression: As you gain experience, your character will gain levels. With each level, your character becomes stronger in the chosen job, can equip stronger weapons and armor and gain more powerful abilities. Here is a table of how much experience is needed for a level up: Level – Experience 2 – 10 3 – 20 4 – 40 5 – 70 6 – 110 7 – 160 8 – 220 9 – 290 10 – 370 11 – 460 12 – 560 13 – 680 14 – 820 15 – 1000 Each level adds +1 points to each four of your basic statistics, all visible at your Character Profile. You can also permanently increase your basic statistics with certain items, as equipment only gives them temporary boosts for as long as you have them equipped. Like said earlier, gaining levels also opens up new missions for you to experience, and a high enough level even opens up the sealed doors to forbidden dungeons holding the Relics of the Ancient Versions, objects of immense power that will help you bring the Blue Demon and his hordes of Viruses down – or gain his favor and destroy the Three Sovereigns and the Kingdom of Ob. It’s your choice how to play this game. Teamwork: Since this game is a MMORPG, you don’t have to face the hordes of Viruses all by yourself. You can join forces with the other players and form a party (roleplaying term for a group of characters). In a party you can embolden yourself to take up the more stronger Viruses and the more challenging missions. If the party has a balanced set of jobs, even better. All the rewards will be shared between the members of the party (although items will go to the player who dealt the finishing blow). A party cannot include more than five players, though. If you want to really bond with other players, you can found a Guild. You will need a special permit from the Three Sovereigns themselves for that, though. A Guild offers many benefits to a teamplayer, including a mutual Inventory and lots of friends to form a party with. Guilds will be awarded for slaying Viruses, as well. So why don’t you discover the way to get a Guild Permission and found one yourself? So what do you guys think? EDIT: Added a chapter about parties and guilds.
 10.
Forsaken City This was once the original city for all good Otaku's. However it was lost in the Holy Wars of version 2. The people of good who could, fled from their homeland in fear what may happen to them when the Overlord Blue Demon and his viruses arrived. Those that were left behind, were either forced into manual labor, or used for science experiments. The luckier ones were just killed on the spot. Those that tried to escape or rebel against the Viruses were killed and their corpses hung from street lamps to show what happened if you try to go against the vast Virus Empire. After the viruses arrived, black clouds covered the shining sun. Some say that this happened when Blue Demon inputed a virus that he created into the sky. Now in Version 7, the viruses are still a force to be reckoned with. The city in general is very worn down, the castle itself in ruins. A toxic red smog surrounds the city due to many years of toxic waste and pollution. The city is rat infested and there are several filthy cats and dogs roaming the streets. Those cats and dogs are so thin from lack of care and starvation. The bodies, now skeletons, are still hanging from the street lamps for decoration. ----------------------------------------------------------- What do you think? I will impliment a base for the spammers aka noob mountain when I write a description/history of the wastelands. I am going to try to write a thing for Otaku City next. Whatever comes to me first.
I like it, yes. Good call on implementing the Versions there as well. ;D A few nitpicks, though: Viruses don't have an Empire, unless you meant it as a symbolic sense (they're just uncivilized monsters). Also, that talk about cats & dogs... isn't it a bit pointless? The streets should be roaming with Viruses, not animals abandoned many Versions ago. MD Code Red -- restores many HP (a last resort item) MD Live Wire -- resurrects a KO'd player (rare; summer release only :p) And then you have all the other unknown flavors, like those that they sell only at Taco Bell or 7-11, and you've got AMP and AMP Overdrive and MDX and MD Sport and Dew Iced, etc., etc. I think it's cool.
Too bad my country only sells the original green bottle. ;P Anyway, I've already figured out that Candy and other sweets restore HP, and Mana Marbles and other strange talismans restore MP. Anyone can expand on these or create optional items as well. In any case, Mountain Dew is in, no matter what. X)
Side-note on XP: In party missions, how will the combat XP be distributed?
This just occurred to me: what about a sort of neutral territory? There's nothing preventing it to be N00b Mountain. ;D Because it was my day off, I had time to add stuff to my lists. Here are the five beginner jobs in their current state. I'm pretty pleased with them, they're quite balanced now in relation to each other. 12.
I was thinking more along the lines of party combat situations ? especially ones where one member of the party runs into a problem and can't post for, say, two days. How would we get around initiative that way? Everyone else in the party, including the opposing Monsters/Players, is stuck until that person can post, assuming they don't wish to drop or can't even send that much of a message. Not so much competition, then, as much as the group is only as fast as its slowest player. And given Murphy's Law....
I think open communication would be very essential in this game. People should notify the gamemasters if they are absent for more than a few days, and if they're unable to do that, gamemasters would have the power to skip over their turn after a day or two. The more I think about this game, the more I see problems with it, but also possibilities. I don't think this will be impossible to make (referring to the multiple AIM convos I had yesterday), but it will require a lot more work. Japan and I discussed about the central locations for this game. She agreed to help me with them, but basically they are Otaku City, the current capital of Ob Kingdom, and the Forsaken City (working name), the old capital that was taken over by the viruses long time ago. There will be separate goals and achievements for the Bright Side and the Dark Side (still need to figure out proper names for those alignments), although at the moment, the Dark Side is much more limited in terms of options. I could use some opinions on this. Should the game focus only on the good guys, with a few "neutral" jobs thrown in there? Or should it be playable from both sides of the story?
 13. Maybe you could open this idea up a bit more to those of us who have no idea what the show is about? That would really help, you see. ;D
 14.
In the MUD that I play called Achaea, there are quite a few ways to get your character revived. Priests revived, those with the grove skill can resurrect in their groves, and those who do not have another person to help them simply pray for salvation and after a few minutes they are alive again. Or, a person can throw them in a special flame to resurrect them too. Well, I think that if someone dies, they will have to wait five posts to be able to continue. Or two posts when someone resurrects them. What do you think?
There will of course be items and spells that can revive a dead character, but I like your idea of a penalty for dying. Five posts, or even ten, seems like a good amount. The item for reviving could be called something like Coke of Rebirth, or some other drink that geeks consider a life-saver. ;D Or maybe Life Insurance...
 15.
What about players vs players? It would make things interesting.
Well, since there are two opposing alignments (working names "Bright Side" and "Dark Side"), there will be Player vs. Player situations, but only on specific missions that require signing up to. I wouldn't want anyone to go on a slaughtering rampage on fellow players, after all. ;D Besides, if my vision will be correct, all players can see each other's stats and such, so it wouldn't be very fair to allow killing between players. Oh, and like in MMORPGs, to my understanding, if there's nobody around to revive your character if s/he is killed, the character will return to the town it started the adventure. Or do people have better suggestions on how to handle deaths?
 16.
And then a 50/50 initiative for equal-level opponents? Sure. Eliminates the need for a Speed stat.
I was thinking that in equal-level situations, the initiative would be on the player, actually. Just to eliminate any unnecessary drawings.
Currently we have Player v. Monster and Players v. Monster scenarios, but what about multiple Monsters per battle: Player v. Monsters and Players v. Monsters?
I've already hinted of multiple monsters being in battle at the same time (see the Gamer's abilities, for example). The turn order would go with the levels in those cases as well. For example, a Hate Mail (level 3) would attack first, then a level 2 Gamer and finally a Loveworm (level 1). Rince and repeat until death.
Also, if the GMs are controlling the monsters, that opens up the possibility that a person may only be able to take one action per day, while others might be able to take four or five, depending on who is online at the same time as who.
That is a possibility, yes, but since the individual players aren't exactly competing against each others (in general, at least), I see no harm in it.
Either way, you have bugs. GM control is the obvious way to go, but that's still a problem that would become irritating for multiple players.
That's why I need multiple GMs. ;D Or at least Dungeon Masters who would take care of a single "region thread".
And still, a separation of five points grows less pronounced the higher the character grows.
That could be solved with a special stat increase every ten levels, or with consumable items that boost a certain stat for good (such as a Power Drink, which would add +2 points to the basic attack power, for example). Uh, the complexity! XD It's a great thing, though, that you challenge me with your questions, Allamorph. Maintaining a balance in the system is crucial.
 17.
That reminds me: how are the monsters going to be kept track of, and who'll be controlling them? Relying completely on the honor system just won't cut it, and the possible numbers could get daunting. I'm not trying to talk you out of this, just throwing up something that just hit me. ....but I reflex-saved for half damage.
Your concern is valid, as is James's, in fact those are the same concerns I have myself. Yes, the game will need quite a many gamemasters (or at least a few very dedicated ones). Everything will be kept in track in a separate Underground thread, where everyone can see everybody's statistics and owned items, lists of monsters and weapons and such, and other general information. Those lists will then be updated when necessary by the gamemasters. At least that's how I envision it. The other option would be to keep a secret list for the players that would be shared only by the gamemasters, but that would probably be quite tricky, and people would lose track of their own progress more easily. The battles will take place in the game thread(s), and they will flow with one action per post (see the list of actions above). The gamemasters would play as the monsters, so the speed of the battle wouldn't be so frantic. The player and the monster would of course take turns to attack (the initiative would be decided upon the levels of the opponents, ie. a level 2 Gamer would attack first against a Loveworm (level 1)). Also, the players would have to either go solo against the monsters, or form a party to attack them in unison. If the monsters were fair game to everybody, they would probably have no chance to strike at all. ;P Here's two of the viruses, one updated and one new: Loveworm (Virus Level 1) HP: 5 MP: 5 Reward: 2 Experience & 5 OtakuBucks Ability: - Hug (2 damage) - Leech Kiss (drain 5 HP from target to self) MP Cost: 1 Drops (1/2 chance): - Candy (restores 10 HP) Hate Mail (Virus Level 3) HP: 34 MP: 12 Reward: 15 Experience & 20 OtakuBucks Ability: - You’ve Got Mail! (6 damage) - I Hate You! (10 damage and “Curse”-status) MP Cost: 6 Drops (1/10 chance): - Chain Mail (armor) As you can see, the viruses don't have any attack or magic stats, but they rely solely on their skills. Some cost MP, while others don't. The item drops also have different chances of taking place. I'm thinking that the gamemaster playing as the viruses would notify the player through a PM whenever they gain a new item or a level. Phew, I can envision that this planning stage will take weeks still! I'll try to keep things as simple as possible for the beta-test, however (maybe only a few job options and limited amount of equipment, viruses and missions). Edit: For a dessert to that rant, here's the layout of the Gamer job. Gamer, whose interest in different types of games can sometimes reach excessive limits. It's battle technique is physical but quick. Basic HP: 8, Basic MP: 2, Basic Attack Power: 3, Basic Magic Power: 1 Weapons: - Buffer Sword (Required Level 1, Atk +3) - Wooden Sword (Required Level 3, Atk +5, Break Possibility 5%) - Wiimote (Required Level 5, Atk +10, Break Possibility 25%) Armor: - Junk Mail (Required Level 2, HP +6) - Chain Mail (Required Level 4, HP +12) Gaming Skillz: - Reset (Level 1, take yourself back to the starting point at any time) - Dice Roll (Level 3, damage enemy randomly anywhere between 1 – 6 x basic attack power) - Button Smash (Level 6, damage up to four enemies with equipped weapon with ½ chance of hitting each)
 18.
Oh, I saw that, and it makes sense. That's why I wanted to be clear that I know only a little about what I was getting at. But still, let's take the L.20 Mangaka with a Calligraphy Brush casting Withering Sakura. Calligraphy Brush (Required Level 5, Atk +3, Mag +5) Withering Sakura (Level 5, +5 flower elemental damage up to three targets) MP Cost: 10 The previous stats alter to this: HP: 24 --> +0 --> 24 MP: 29 --> -10 --> 19 Att: 24 --> +3 --> 27 Mag: 27 --> +10 --> 37 True, their Magic is higher now, but their MP pool is terrible for a Magic-based class. I know I'm only looking at temp changes, but the Mag jump isn't as pronounced without the spell being cast (only 32, with a 29 MP pool – still a little low, IMO), and I'm still in favor of a marked difference between class stat increasing. I'm also aware of the possibilities for doing ridiculous amounts of damage early on – never cool – which is why I liked FE's Def and Res stats. (I think Res=Will, but I'm not sure. I'll check here in a second.)
I think I solved the HP/MP-pool problem by replacing the defense-stat on armor with HP/MP boosts, like this: Souvenir Kimono – Mangaka Level 2, HP +5, MP +5 School Uniform – Mangaka Level 4, HP +10, MP +10, protects from "Boredom" Chewbacca Suit - Movie Freak Level 6. HP +20, protects from "Laughter" I also need to define what all these neat status effects do, but I'm thinking both "Boredom" and "Laughter" prevent the character from making "actions", only different ones. Btw, an action is a special move that can only be done once per post, in my thinking. The action could be: - attacking an enemy - performing a special ability - using an item - unlimited shopping (buying and selling stuff) - accepting a mission from an NPC These actions will be separated in the game somehow, so that they are more easier to distinguish for the gamemasters (who keep track on everybody's progress). How do people feel about this type of system for the gameplay?
 19.
*reads over list of occupations* So, umm . . . which one would I fall into? :animedepr *hopes it's not a catalyst*
You could of course choose it yourself. ;P So I've come up with some new ideas for jobs (again). Movie Freak would be one of the beginner jobs, along with Gamer, Mangaka and Spammer. Advanced jobs are much more multiple, with the inclusion of a Final Fanatic and a Transformer, both inspired by their respective source series. Joining the "dark side" is Godmodder, an overpowered s-o-b who thinks s/he's the best in everything and makes sure everyone else knows that as well. ;P I've also started compiling lists for different terms, items and equipment as well. I'm gonna make this happen, dammit! XP ;D Edit: Allamorph, good call on the level ups. You just forgot to take the equipment and abilities into equation. In case of the Mangaka, it's weapons raise magic more than attack, thus making the final stats more different. The spells are also meant to be more powerful than the physical attack. But I'll look into the levelling up more. Suggestions for that are always welcome, as well! As for the Otaku-job, I'm planning to make "Super Otaku" an advanced job, with more powerful equipment and skills than a "mere" Mangaka could ever dream of. ;P
 20.
Maybe a sub-class could be something like "Fanatic", examples being Des with Zelda or me with Transformers. Could allow a special bonus of sorts or access to weapons/abilities related to whatever the character is obsessed with, heh.
That idea could be worked onwards, as well. The jobs should however be quite restricted in terms of variety of skills (some more magic-oriented, some focused on physical damage, some on disabilities etc.), so that there isn't just a bunch of jacks-of-all-trades. There still seems to be a shortage of a basic healer job. I'd also like to see Arena Mobster and Hacker as advanced jobs in this game. But besides jobs, there's a lot of other things people can contribute. I mentioned maps, by which I meant some sort of floor plans to various town, fields and dungeons - places where the players will meet, shop, fight and explore. I liked the idea that Shy suggested, to have separate threads for different places, but so that the game won't be too much to handle, the various places could be compiled into regions that would have their own threads. Here's another example of what I've been thinking: The Town of Obrah Leader: Lady Clurr Description: Obrah is the media center of the whole Kingdom of Ob. It's massive TV Tower is a real tourist attraction, and it's hi-tech stores offer the most complex gadgets in Ob - too bad most of them are easily breakable junk. It's also under continuous attacks of the Spammers and the Viruses, because of it's communicating devices and energy generators. Buildings: TV Tower - protect the skyscraping tower from the attacks of energy-hungry viruses and Saboteurs. Lady Clurr's Movie Manor - hear all the latest gossips and meet the hottest celebrities at one of the lady's famous parties. Just-In Hi-Tech Store -buy various modern equipment and items with a high price but low quality. - Example: "Wiimote" (Weapon. Required job: Gamer, Level 5. Attack Power +10, Break Possibility 25%) Cost: 100 OtakuBucks Movie Costume Outlet - buy clothes once worn by your favorite movie characters. - Example: "Chewbacca Suit" (Armor. Required job: Movie Freak, Level 6. -20% physical damage received, protects from "Laughter"-status.) Cost: 200 OtakuBucks NPCs: Lady Clurr - the party-hardy mayor of the town, who seems to know everybody. Valuable source of information about almost anyone. Princess Paris - the air-headed royal heir of the faraway Kingdom of Hilton, who likes to flee to Obrah to have some fun. Jack Sparrow - after his pirating career hit rock-bottom, he retired to Obrah to bask on fame and gather some fortune. So, that's another thing people can create. As for the possible future of this game, if this thread gets enough support and popularity, eventually I will start beta-testing this game with a narrow group of test-players. If that goes well, the game will be opened to everyone. Everybody's help and input is welcome!
 21.
Couldn't there be more than just brushes for weapons? Not all anime fans are artists you know. There could also be plushies and a katana.
Of course. I already mentioned a Paper Fan for a weapon, but those would naturally come into use in later levels. There could also be an advanced job for a proper Anime Fanatic as well, an upgrade to a Mangaka if you wish. Something like Japanophiliac or Super Otaku, perhaps? That job could wield all kinds of zany katanas, nunchakus, shurikens and similar traditional Japanese weapons, couldn't it? Heh, I'm totally loving this thread already! XD
 22.
Each wiseman has their weapon that is personal to them. Whether it is a cat, cookie, plushie, or whatever. Over time, that weapon becomes something like a mod rod. Each wiseman has an OB element ofl power that is personal to them. Discussion, Art/Beauty, Otaku Lore, CATitude, Writing, etc. They draw power from the boards through their item/weapon. OB is like a religion to them. This is not a starting class. They would have to reach a certain level before they can choose to obtain it. (Thanks Shy)
Hmm, as intriguing as that sounds, it also seems to be quite overpowered for one job. This would make a perfect "master job", the most potential job of the bunch, though. Maybe we could refine these unique weapons/skills into one personal ability. Maybe the Wiseman ability could be something like "Familiar" or "Expertise", where they draw their powers from the OB forum they're most active in, and get a matching moveset (see my example about the Mangaka for what a moveset is, if you don't know). However, I think we should aim to have the variety that your suggestion offers in individual jobs already. Like there's already a job for those who frequent the Anime Lounge and the Hardwired, there could also be jobs for those who're active in Otaku Lounge and Anthology etc. Maybe you could think about those too? Thanks for the suggestion, nevertheless! Don't let it be your last! ;D EDIT: If you want to know the format of monsters (ie. viruses), here's an example I've been thinking: Loveworm (Virus Level 1) HP: 5 MP: 5 Reward: 2 Experience & 5 OtakuBucks Ability: - Leech Kiss (drain 5 HP from target to self) Cost:1 MP Drops: - Candy (restores 10 HP) And that brings me to another idea for a job: Virusmaster. It can tame viruses and use them against the opponents. Or, it could act like FF's Blue Mage, and learn abilities from viruses for later use.
 23.
Anyway, this seems like a really ambitious project. I have a lot of questions regarding how HP/MP/Levels would affect the role-playing itself. Perhaps members could gain XP by posting, and every handful of posts they would level up. Even with a small group of players it would be a nightmare to organize, but I'm sure you understand that already.
In the game I used as an example, we (the players) get experience and gold from defeating monsters (specific monster always drops the same amount of both). The level-ups occur when a certain amount of experience is gained (for level 2, it could be a mere 10 experience, then for level 3, you'd need 30). Certain levels at specific jobs gives the player new abilities and allows them to equip new weapons and armor. Simple but genius, in my opinion. The guy who created the system has put a lot of time into the game, so I'm mostly just copying his great effort. There'd have to be, of course, a limit to how much players could attack in one post, so that one player couldn't make ten kills at once. I'm thinking about an attack per post, although that would encourage short posts especially during battles. I'll figure it out... Anyway, I agree, it would be a nightmare (although partly a pleasant dream as well, at least to me) to organize, but with a proper table about all the players would make it manageable. ;D And I wouldn't've asked for help if I didn't need it, too. Big thanks for your input, Shy! And Japan, what type of abilities would a Wiseman have? Would it be an advanced job instead of a starter one? What would it wield as a weapon? Hmm, I think I'll flesh out one of the jobs more as an example of what I'm thinking for you guys: Mangaka (starter job) Basic HP: 5 (+1 every level) Basic MP: 10 (+1 every level) Basic Attack Power: 1 (+1 every level) Basic Magic Power: 3 (+1 every level) Some Weapons: - Paint Brush (Required Level 1, Atk +1, Mag +2) - Fountain Pen (Required Level 3, Atk +2, Mag +3, water element) - Calligraphy Brush (Required Level 5, Atk +3, Mag +5) Some Armor: - Souvenir Kimono (Required Level 2, -10% magic damage received) - School Uniform (Required Level 4, -20% magic damage received, protects from "Boredom"-status) Magic Arts: - Sakura Bud (Level 1, +2 flower elemental damage) MP Cost: 2 - Ink Splash (Level 2, inflicts "Blindness"-status, making target unable to see) MP Cost: 2 - Sakura Blossom (Level 3, +3 flower elemental damage up to two targets) MP Cost: 5 - Zipper Lips (Level 4, inflicts "Mute"-status, making target unable to cast magic) MP Cost: 4 - Withering Sakura (Level 5, +5 flower elemental damage up to three targets) MP Cost: 10 So, I'm thinking about something like this. Anyone interested in creating more? Just don't create it too far ahead, the first 5-10 level should suffice for now.
 24. Inspired by a few sources, mainly by Arcadia's latest RPG "Quest for the Lost Relic" and a great text-based RPG/Quiz-hybrid called SOCK 2 over at RPGamer, I started to think what a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG for short) would be like if it was brought here to our own OtakuBoards. After going over the thought many times, I've finally came up with an idea. Let me introduce: OBsession (Working Title) - An OtakuBoards MMORPG -
I see before me the great Kingdom of Ob, ruled by the Three Sovereigns, who administrate the laws and keep the order aided by the noble Moderator Knights. But I also see great threats looming beyond the lands of Ob: anomalous Viruses, bands of outlawed Spammers and hordes of the Trollkin. Wielding their mighty Mod Rods and Ban Hammers, the Moderator Knights try to protect the borders of the kingdom, but being vastly outnumbered, they will need help from the commoners. Ordinary Gamers and Mangakas are able to rise ranks to someday become Moderator Knights themselves, but only if they train themselves against the Viruses and the Spammers, aid the kingdom by doing good deeds and gather knowledge about the secrets of the Ancient Versions. This path is not for everybody, though. I can see that some commoners choose to join the Spammers and Trolls instead, making pacts with the Viruses and using the power of evil to cause havoc and mayhem across the Kingdom of Ob. Which side will be the victorious one? That I cannot see, but time will tell... ~ Sandy the Sage ~
So there's some flavor text to escort my idea. Basically, everything within this game would take place at the Adventure Arena, and the most visible part of the game would be like almost every RPG in this place - interactive story writing from a specific role. However, there would be a whole game system behind that traditional roleplaying. I'm talking about monsters, battles, jobs, weapons, levels, HP & MP, statistics, missions, maps - most things that you can find in any console or computer MMORPG. Basically players would sign up as a character with a specific weapon and job, and then venture out to the Kingdom of Ob to fight monsters, do missions and solve mysteries put on their path. Because it's a MMORPG, people can interact with other players, found Guilds or Factions etc. For a mental image, think about World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XI or Guild Wars put into a message board context. I know it can be done, I've seen and experienced such a system in the RPGamer game linked on top of this post. But I also know that I can't do it alone. I need help to make this project reality, and this very thread is the place you can post your offers of help. I'm looking for any type of ideas, suggestions, questions and answers that you can give. I will also need help with managing the game if/when it's launched, but I'll look into that later. For now, we should focus on the game system. I have some ideas that need expanding, but of course anybody can send their own ideas here as well. Here's what I've been thinking: Job System:
Players can assign their character a specific job that allows them to use certain weapons and gain special abilities. When they progress in the game (i.e. gain levels) they can advance to more powerful jobs. Some examples for jobs: Gamer, whose interest in different types of games can sometimes reach excessive limits. Gamer's battle technique is physical but quick. Wields weapons such as Buffer Swords and Wiimotes, and has access to game-related skills ("Gaming"), like "Reset" and "Dice Roll". Mangaka, a fanatic of all things Japanese - especially Anime & Manga. Is a more magic-oriented job. Can use Calligraphy Brushes and Paper Fans as weapons, and can cast spells related to both art and Japan ("Magic Art"), such as "Dark Draw" and "Withering Sakura". Moderator Knight is an advanced job, and a paragon of justice and order. Has the prowess to both praise and punish. Uses Ban Hammers, Mod Rods and such as weapons, and special skills ("Judgment") as sees best. Spammer is a despised outcast, but a dangerous one too. Is very sneaky and roguish, and it reflects the job's weapons and skills as well. They rather attack quickly and then retreat. Troll, an advanced job of a person that has been completely mutated by evil. Trolls are both fearsome and gruesome, and they hold nothing back. Though extremely physical, they are also very simple. Catalyst is the archnemesis of a Moderator Knight. As evil as a Troll, but brimmed with self-righteous intellect. He literally catalyzes pure evil into the Kingdom. A master of words and mindgames, this advanced job is a choice for a more magic-oriented badguy.
I will update this post/thread, once I come up with more refined ideas, but please, in the meanwhile contribute your own thoughts and suggestions into this thread. Anything goes for this project this early. ;D I honestly hope something grand comes out of this...
 25.
Just to make sure I understand you clearly, by titular you mean that though they may have the same name as a character from an anime, we do not have to be accurate as to which series they are from. Correct? I am assuming that being true to the actual anime series is not the point here but like you said, the actual anime/manga style of story. In other words, the character may be named Naruto, this is just an example, but the story does not have to even include what is in that show. Also, if the Aces do post placing the character in a series I am not familiar with by writing as if making an episode/fan fiction from a series... Is it acceptable if I completely disregard that and mold the story to steer away from trying to essentially write a fan fiction? Mind you I would do that in a manner that is semi believable. Because if this requires learning about a show to do it. It's not going to happen. Even if I had the money to pick up the DVD's to a series. I would not do so. If you could clear this up for me Sandy I would appreciate it. Thank you.
No, you should make up an original story about the Ditzy Witch Sasuka. Of course the clichés could include specific character types from various anime (or even cameo appearances), but I'm not looking for just a crossover story here. In other words, be original but recognizable. ;D And for your second question, you can do anything you want to the characters, you don't have to stay true to anything. I'm looking for as many clichés as possible, not a consistent, canon fanfic. Hope these answered your questions!
