Request [RPG/Event] Request for a logo or banner for my Otaku Idol 2 Event
Sandy replied to Sandy's topic in Creative Works
Heh, so you've all used the same font. How... copycattish. ;P Sorry, indifference, but I found that picture from my google search too and it struck me as too artificial. I just don't think the CG-picture fits to my event. And White, your banners are basically identical with Eclipse's except for the colors, so you didn't bring anything new to the table. I still like Eclipse's green banner the best, so that's what I'm going to use. That means that Eclipse, if you want it, you've got a guaranteed spot in my event - if I get to make it, that is. Thanks again! And thanks White and indifference for your effort, it's much appreciated! ;D -
Request [RPG/Event] Request for a logo or banner for my Otaku Idol 2 Event
Sandy replied to Sandy's topic in Creative Works
I really like them both! The use of Greek letters in the text is great and imaginative, and they both have this mysterious aura in them, just what I was looking for actually. The red one gives me a bit of a DaVinci Code -vibe, while the green one is more classy, and perhaps more suitable for my suggestion of an Event. Thanks a big bunch! However, I hope you don't mind if I still wait a bit longer for other suggestions, Eclipse, as many people might not have seen this thread yet. -
I don't usually post in this forum, but seeing the video game theme of this thread I just had to write my opinion. I don't think anybody's surprised when I say that I would like to see a Final Fantasy anime series. Yes, I'm aware of Final Fantasy Unlimited, but it's not really related to the games. And the movies Spirits Within and Advent Children aren't anime in my book, just because they were done fully with computer technology. Like Veritas, I'd be very intrigued to see the epic and complex storyline of Final Fantasy Tactics in anime form, but honestly, just about every Final Fantasy title (aside from the first, I reckon) could be turned into a series. Why? Because the games base heavily on their stories and characters, and the gameplay is a secondary matter in them. The plotlines are also multilayered and span through a whole world and beyond. In my opinion the game series is great at steering away from the worst clichés, and every game is an individual with it's own world and mythology. So yeah, give me a proper Final Fantasy anime series, and you'll have a sure buyer here.

Okay, since the applicants of the Otaku Idol 2 (click for a link) are allowed to have other people help them in graphics, I'm making a request for the event I'm planning because I have no photoshoppic skills. What I basically need is a logo and/or a banner with a labyrinth or a maze on the background and the text Labyrinth slapped on it.
The Picture After some googling, I found two candidates that I like for the background picture, however if you think you have a better picture, I'm open to suggestions. It can be a stylished maze, like this: Or a photographic one, like this: I don't have any specific limitations for the size of it. If you make a banner it's the normal 500x100 pixels (or smaller), but a logo can be larger. The Text I simply want the text Labyrinth written onto the background picture, preferably typed in an Ancient Greek or Latin font, but again, I'm open for your ideas as well.
The competition is due to 10th of November, so I'd like to get your suggestions as soon as possible. As a reward, if I get chosen to host this event, I'm giving the creator of the best banner/logo an automatic chance to participate in Labyrinth (you don't naturally have to take the reward, but it'll be a blast, I ensure you!). So please help a potential Event-Master-to-be for the win!
Actually Sandy, typically when a thread has veered completely off it's original purpose, in the North Korean threads case, as to whether or not they were a threat to a point where we're discussing the morality of nuclear weapons, it's usually about then staff close the thread and advise people if they want to continue such a discussion to do it in a thread with such a title. After all what would your response be to read a thread titled "Finnish Cuisine", which when you clicked the last reply was discussing WW2. It's called Off-Topic, and such threads are as I said, usually closed.
Aww, come on! Don't tell me you don't see the connection between North Korea and the morality of nuclear weapons! Nukes were, in fact, the reason people are worried about North Korea. That's where the discussion led to, so wouldn't it be superficial to cut out a good debate just because it changed the point-of-view? Maybe the title could be changed for something more fitting, but closing down an otherwise quality thread would be quite silly. Finnish Cuisine (something nobody wants to talk about, actually, cause it sucks ;P), on the other hand, has no relation to the Second World War. Rules aren't always so straightforward, which you'll no doubt will find out if you become a mod yourself (if you already aren't on another message board, that is). It all comes down to how they are interpreted. ;D
All of these pitches are due by November 10th. At that point the finalists will be notified, and all of the events will launch the following Monday. From that point on it will be either 8 weeks, or until all of the events have ended, that the final winner will be selected.
Wow, that's a fast pace. Better get to work, then! X) I have two questions: 1. Correct me if I'm wrong, but answering the additional questions doesn't affect the 1000 word limit on the pitching, right? 2. What do you exactly want from the pitching? Is it just meant to be an advertisement of sorts (á la the Coming Attractions thread), or does it have to include everything from the rules of the game to the sign-up form for the participants (as in a full-fledged plan)? Sorry for the stupid-ish questions, I just wanted to be sure, heh.
Personally if you consider us harsh for pointing out that you could have remedied your own problem but didn't, and instead chose to complain about it, then I hope you'll take this as a lesson and avoid such situations in the future.
As much as I appreciate constructive criticism, and believe it is needed for one to become better at whatever one does, I don't think I deserve anybody's "advice" on this matter, because I wasn't having a problem, I was simply "playing mod", as you put it. But it's good to know how much better you'd be as a moderator than me, Gavin. And Death Knight, I love you too.

Okay, sorry for the misunderstandment, as well as seeming overly sensitive. I was just worried that nobody got my point and it frustrated me a bit. I wasn't really offended to the least. ;D I'm glad that my message got through, though. Now I'll leave Phar Lap to it's no doubt well-deserved rest.
Well finding information on this was simple, google is after all your friend when it comes to these things.
I don't think I was being lazy for asking more background to the start of this post (again, not out of interest but out of principle) instead of googling/going to Wikipedia. As an (overexaggerated) example, let's say I started a thread asking opinions if Anneli Jäätteenmäki was persecuted to step down from her office as a Prime Minister, without putting any background of the situation to the post. Now, would you use google, or just go "huh?!"?
-
Besides, your reasoning dosen't explain how the N. Korea debate thread turned into a discussion regarding the humane reasons of bombing Hiroshima.
Well, as discussions go, they tend to change their point-of-view when they continue for some time, all depending on who participates in the discussion. It's called a train of thought, which in the North Korea-thread went something like: North Korea > nuclear testings > nuclear weapons > USA > bombing of Hiroshima > laws of war It's only natural that discussions and debates live, and the same thing is happening to this thread as well. Don't mix it with off-topic discussion, which means bringing a whole new, out-of-the-blue topic into the conversation (like "scrap North Korea, let's talk about candy bars!"). All in all, it's great that you're worried, John, but I don't think anything special is happening on the spam-front, at least nothing that the staff can't handle. ;D
It seems to me like you were just posting for the sake of playing mod in a forum that isn't your own, not out of any genuine interest. Fail.[/color']
Harsh, man! Just tell me, how can I have a genuine interest in something that I have never even heard about?! Phar Lap maybe some equinine hero to you American and Australian people, but can you really expect a Finnish person to instantly know who it is? Again, I thought it was a principle that a thread is started so that everybody can understand it. Also, it's ridiculous that you accuse me of playing mod - I am a mod! It's not like I'm using my authority here, but ensuring the quality of this place is every mod's duty, no matter what area he or she is assigned to.
As for finding out ever detail on the horse, I find it a bit hard to believe you don't have two minutes to breeze through a relatively short Wiki article to find out some basic knowledge.
For starters, I just wanted to know what Phar Lap was. Now it's clear to me that it's a racing horse that died in shady circumstances. I really don't think I should need to go all the way to Wikipedia for that information. Isn't it a principle in starting a new thread to put enough background information to the first post so that anybody reading it would be on the clear on what is the topic of the matter? I know I've seen enough of those "Link. Discuss."-type of threads online, not necessarily so much here, but on other forums. I know Wiki and Google are handy tools for getting information, but isn't it quite bothersome if you're always pointed to go to those places if you want to know something, no matter how small it is? Okay, now I'm drifting away from the topic at hand, but I was only on this cause for principle, not to offend anybody.
-
Maybe doing a Wiki search on Phar Lap, or heck even reading posts subsequent to the original might shed some light on your predicament Sandy.
Of course, because Phar-freaking-Lap is the most important thing in my life now and forevermore! I want to know just everything about it! Seriously, I didn't get that Phar Lap was the horse's name. Sounds more like a misspelled shortening of Pharmacy Laboratory or something. :P
-
The question is why?
No, the question is who heck is Phar Lap? :P Putting just a bit more background information to the starting post of this thread wouldn't have hurt...
The only true bad spam incident that I think we should even be lightly concerned with was the spam outrage that occured in the Adventure Square. Somebody would keep on regsitering a new account, and then cut and paste random, useless quotes from other threads into a wide variety of threads. After getting banned, he would keep on appearing. It appeared that the trend stopped tho.
Yep, four days and four accounts later, Lexy/Shiro/Lexina/Lexi is no more. Thanks to Dagger for saving my mental health! ;D And thanks to the people of the community for being so active on reporting about the problem, I don't think I've ever received as much PMs and e-mails from so many different people in such a short amount of time. Thanks a bunch!

Welcome to the Adventure Arena, SasukeUchiha321! Before you start creating RPGs here, you should read the sticky about Adventure Arena Basics thoroughly. Once you have, you will learn that we require a few specific things from our games: that the writing is readable and has a good grammar, that an appropriate rating would be put to the headline, and that the introduction would be at least three paragraphs long. I'm going to have to close this thread now, but you should read the instructions and perhaps join a few other games before attempting to make another RPG of your own. And if any more questions arise, we moderators are only a PM away! Thanks! - Sandy *thread closed*

Gender segregated classrooms? Yay or Nay?
Sandy replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in General Discussion
What I really think they should be back is corporal punishment in classes. Oh yeah bring back the paddle that way kids will stop being stupid in class and maybe start paying attention. That?s what's really wrong with America. No is punishing there kids anymore. All it takes is a couple good hits with a leather belt and then kids know not to do bad things.
What a mighty good upbringer you'll become... *rolls eyes* I agree that many problems people have with their children/pupils are caused by the fact that they don't have any control over them. Children suffer from being able to do anything they want, because their idea of right and wrong isn't fully developed yet. However, there are much, much better ways of discipline than corporal punishment. People who become victims of brutal violence in their childhood will get scarred for life - I'm one of them, so I speak from experience. Love and violence rarely mix up well, so loving parents and upbringers should use methods of punishment that don't violate children's rights. Examples of these are grounding, putting the child on a bench, denying the child the things he or she would want to do etc. It's these sorts of things that teach kids that they've done wrong. Violence only teaches them that violence is alright. Sorry that this has nothing to do with gender segregated classrooms, but I just had to reply to only1specialed. -
When I say New York, what do you think of?
Sandy replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in General Discussion
Honestly? I'm highly annoyed by the fact that in American reality-shows, when somebody says they are from NY, they always have to add "- the greatest city in the world!". And then everybody cheers. National pride is okay, but isn't that a little over the top? -
Gender segregated classrooms? Yay or Nay?
Sandy replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in General Discussion
It seems that this return to the past is reasoned by only one fact: that girls and boys learn things in a different way. And even that's not true in all cases. I'd say the gender-based classes are a perfect example of generalization and inability to see beyond stereotypes. There's actually a similar "experiment" going on in a Finnish school. In that school, girls and boys attend to separate classes for the first two grades, and then get melted into mixed classes. Everybody goes to the same school, however, and meets each other at breaks. It's a pity that the school-system in that state is taking a step back on the path of equal rights, because no matter how much the officials talk about "equal opportunities in terms of different learning styles", it's just not going to happen. The girls will eventually be taught how to be good housewives, cleaners, cooks and mothers, while the boys will concentrate on sports, handicrafts and sciences. That's what the school-system was like over a hundred years ago, so I'm thinking the history is starting to repeat itself... PS. Speaking about girls distracting the boys attention in elementary school levels is both sexist and perverted. Little boys don't see girls that way, not until they reach puberty, and even then they don't become brainless wankers drooling after every female. Well, not all of them. -
Yes, that is a copy of the CD-i Zelda: Wand of Gamelon and some Ocarina of Time action figures.
Those poor figurines, still wrapped up like that! :( Free 'em, I say! Forget resale values, you're never going to sell them anyway! My five FF figurines (Yuna, Cloud, Selphie, Squall and Tidus) are nicely standing on my desk, swinging their weapons and posing. ;D I know they're worthless now outside their packages, but I wouldn't've dreamed to keep them like that. Where's the fun in that? *has been planning to make a photocomic of the figurines*

Aaryanna_Mom, please read my other posts following the one you quoted. They'll give you more insight on what I think and why. Lonley Fighter, for your information, me and Domon aren't scuffling, we are having a debate. Not a very heated one, either. Neither one of us has gone into personal level, we are just exchanging our opinions. And it's not even just the two of us.
If the US or Russia were to launch just twenty nuclear warheads. We would wipe out the entire population of the earth, period. That means that in this worse case scenario (god forbid) that if the US were to accidentally launch a nuke and then Russia returns fire and you do that ninteen more times total. EVERY[/B'] single being on the face of the earth, including you Sandy, would be dead. Dead dead dead dead.
I'm very aware of that. It's exactly why I, a mere individual in this human population of six billion, refuse to support killing other humans in any form. In a grander scale, my opinion is worth a fly's crap, but it matters to me.
So what I'm trying to say is that yes the US does have nuclear capability, as does Russia and I'm sure several other countries too. And as I stated before, who knows how many nukes Russia has left over from the fifties.
Yes, and because the puny Finland I live in is located right at the side of Russia, and we have been in war with Russia in the past, I'm very aware of the danger that lies to the east of us. However, at this very moment, the presidents of Russia and Finland are having a nice dinner in this very city I'm living now (Lahti) because of this great big conference, which is a great example of what diplomacy can do. Enemies fifty years ago, friends now.
No offense, but it sure as heck in your previous posts seem like you are condemning us.
I'm condemning the act, not the person. Or in this case, the thought of an act. However, if you Americans make yourselves look like a bunch of warmongers as a nation, can you blame me for it? Seriously, although American culture has it's own quirks, I'm above seeing you all as a big lump of christian conservative zealousness. There's good people and there's bad people in USA, just like there's good people and there's bad people here.
The fact of the matter remains, the entire world sat on their hands and did nothing to address these situations and now look what happened. over three thousand people were murdered by people from one of the countries the world had been worried about.
Except, most of the Al Qaida involved in 9/11 were Saudi-Arabians (including Osama Bin Laden), not Iraqis or Afghans. But of course the US couldn't attack the Saudis, because that's were all Bush's partners in oil business are. :P Instead, the US attacked Afghanistan and Iraq (because, surprise, bad people also live there) , throwing their whole culture upside down, destroying homes, killing thousands and torturing at least dozens of innocent people, all in the name of FREEDOM (and there were oil too!). What does North Korea has to do with any of this? Well, it could be next, just because there are bad people there, too. Perhaps oil as well. If you say I'm condemning a whole nation for the acts of few, then remember that your nation is destroying entire civilizations for the acts of few.

Deathknight, I really don't appreciate the fact that you take my words out of context and then get insulted by them. Let's review what I said in my previous post:
It's insane that SOME of you people actually thought your nation had/has the right to do that, and your nation alone [has the right to use nuclear weapons]. Talking about American arrogancy...[referring to the last sentence']
I'm really not talking about giving everybody nukes so they can bomb each other away, Strike Gundam. As a pacifist, I believe that no nation should have these kinds of weapons. It's just ludicrous that the US government is on some (pretended?) weapons-of-mass-destruction hunt, when in fact the US is the country in possession of most of those. And although I'm naïve, I'm not blue-eyed enough to believe that US won't ever use them. Who knows when the next "lesser of two evils" situations comes up? :P Domon, you brought the Nazi comparation up yourself, I wouldn't go that far with my train of thought. And like I'm not condemning Germans about their past, I'm not condemning the Americans either. I'm just really worried that the whole "world police" thinking has gotten too deep into everybody's heads on the other side of the Atlantic. You should focus on getting your internal matters fixed before you rush to save the whole world. Which leads me to my last point. DeathKnight, you think your country can afford to go into yet another war (with a country that only poses a theoretic threat, like Iraq did), but if you haven't noticed, all the money spent into wars, soldiers and weaponry is taken from the well-being of the common American people. News from the USA claim that poverty is on a huge rise, health care is in serious problems, and crime is intensifying in the streets, and yet your government (who no doubt aren't facing the aforementioned problems personally) is only concerned about "terrorists". Anything wrong with this picture?
