What do you do when the power goes out?
Sandy replied to CyberPandaLove's topic in General Discussion
Last summer there were some horrible thunder storms here, and one Friday night a lightning struck our antenna so that the whole three-floor building shook. Electricity went down at the same, but it was quickly restored. It was a damn long weekend without television, though. -
I dont really listen to them and all that, they've had some good albums, but i heard that they lip-sing. My mom went to their concert and saw the lead singers mouth move different with the words.
Err... It's more of a rule than an exception to lip-synch in concerts, did you know that? I don't like it either, but at least it prevents the singers from sounding horrible after a possible night out or something like that... What comes to the Dixie Chicks, we Finnish people aren't much of fans of country music, but I respect their courage to say what they think, despite all the "why can't you just shut up and sing prettily?" comments. People need to stand up to what they believe, no matter what their profession or status in the community is. That's the only way the world can ever change.
As for the thing after the credits:
what does this mean? How the heck did Charles come back and does this mean there's another movie?

Don't you remember the
video Xavier showed to the pupils in the classnear the beginning of the movie? The one where Moira MacTaggert told about the possibility of transferring a mind into a vegetable-state body? There's your answer. ;D
And it does seem to hint of a possibility of a sequel. Well, who am I kidding; there's always going to be a sequel as long as there are those who will go to watch it! ;P

FINAL FANTASY X-3 Three years have passed here in Spira since me and my friends Yunie and Paine smashed the nasty Vegnagun and sent the sorry behind of the shadow controlling it back to the last millennium! Well, it was all very sad, really. But good things came out of it, too. First of all, Yunie got her loved one back! I hate to admit it, but I?m a bit jealous. The two of them live at the city of Luca now, playing Blitzball and holding concerts under the management of Rin the Showmaster. Paine, on the other hand, hasn?t settled down yet. She cruises around Spira in the airship Celsius with Buddy. They say their relationship is purely platonic, but I?m not so sure about that... We were called Gullwings back then, three years ago; me and Yunie and Paine, and Buddy and my big bro Brother. Oh, and I mustn?t forget our wiz kid Shinra and Barkeep, the Hypello bartender. Brother and Shinra now live down at Djose, where they help build the New Home, a grand project of my pop Cid. My family belongs to the Al Bhed tribe, and Cid used to be its leader. The original Home of the Al Bhed stood at the Bikanel Island until the horror called Sin destroyed it five years past. My pop wants to rebuild Home because he still thinks that he can reunite the Al Bhed who are now scattered all over Spira. Unfortunately they have new leaders now, like Gippal of the Machine Faction, Nhadala of the Sanubites, and even the boaster Rin. However, the gorgeous Gippal has agreed to help Cid in his venture, so maybe all hope is not lost. Maybe the Al Bhed tribe will take its place in Spira again, instead of living under the rule of others. As for me, I?m still searching for my fortune. At this moment I?m flying in Celsius with Paine and Buddy, because my pop sent me to an errand to search for members of the Al Bhed tribe and bring them news about the New Home. We talked with Yunie once about my own story, and I think the time for that is now. Watch out Spira, here comes Rikku! The Game This is the story of Rikku, a character from the games Final Fantasy X and X-2. As such, this is also a sequel to both games, taking place in the same world with many same characters. The introduction above gave you some background about what has happened in the land of Spira since the destruction of Vegnagun. Because Rikku is an Al Bhed, this game is going to focus heavily on that tribe, it?s position in the world and it?s future. The story will unfold more as the game progresses. In order to participate, you have to have to know at least something about both preceding video games, preferably you?ve played them both through. Also vaster knowledge from Final Fantasy games is a plus too, because it helps you to make your own additions to the world of Spira without breaking the tradition too much. This game is going to run traditionally, with everybody posting when they want to, but there?s one feature that isn?t widely used: battles. More about those later on, though. The World of Spira The game starts with Rikku searching for the scattered Al Bhed all over Spira. The places of the video games can be pretty much all present (with the exception of Macalania Forest, which withered at the end of FF X-2), but three years can change many things. At this point I?m giving free hands to you players to be as inventive as they want. You can change the leaders (or leading factions) of each city, add new dungeons or other locales (even towns if you want) or erase pre-existing ones. There is also a possibility that this game will spread into a whole new continent (where the Al Bhed originate). I have nothing set in stone for that place, so everybody involved with this game are free to build it with me, if we go there. The Characters I will be playing the part of Rikku, who is the central character of this RPG. I will allow about seven other players to join Rikku (more if there are that many good sign-ups) on her quest. There are certain limitations to what characters people can play.
1. No Yuna or Tidus. They had their share of the story, now they have to settle with being NPCs, sorry. 2. No Auron or other dead people. There can be an unsent original character, but I don?t want characters that have deceased in the video games to reappear. 3. I encourage you to choose important NPCs from the video games as your characters. Especially Gippal, Paine and Buddy will be on this game no matter what (if nobody wants to play them, then they will be NPCs). There are also a wide arrange of other interesting characters that weren?t developed much in the video games. 4. If you really want to play an original character, I?d very much like it to be either Al Bhed, Guado, Hypello or Ronso. I felt that the ?minorities? of Spira were left in a very small part in the video games, so there?s much space for creativity in playing them. There are enough ?ordinary? humans in Spira as it is, so try to avoid them. 5. What?s most important with whatever character you choose ? be it an original or already existing one ? is that you tie the character to the storyline at hand. He or she must have some kind of motive to join Rikku.
There you have the limitations. The sign-up form is at the bottom of this post. The Battle This is the new cool feature of this RPG. During their adventure, the characters have a possibility to run into monsters of all shapes and sizes. That?s why each of them carries a predetermined weapon (but new ones can be bought from cities) and they have their own set of abilities (that improve as the level advances). I know, many games have characters with weapons and magic and stuff, but in this game you can actually use them. Battles progress like normal gameplay, although it?s preferable that you separate the battle sections from other text by bolding or italizing or indenting or quoting them (it?s your choice). Everybody who are present at the time of battle can join it as a party, but it?s preferable that the battles ? at least the normal ones ? are taken care of in one post. Boss battles can span several posts, though. What?s in it for the characters to fight, then? Well, each victorious battle (which they probably all are) awards all the characters included a level. There?s a cap in 99 levels, like in the video games. Each tenth level teaches your character a new magic spell or ability, which are predetermined in the sign-up form. All characters start at level 1, so there should be one default ability. The monsters the characters encounter should be from the common Final Fantasy bestiary, but especially the bosses can be something totally original. It?s important that you define which monsters the party fights in each battle. You also have to keep in mind the environment ? an ice elemental will never appear in a desert, for example. Well, if you?ve played your FFs, you should know. The Sign-Up After all this information, we finally get down to business. Was your interest sparked by the stuff above? Then fill in the sign-up form to join! Name: (mind you that people don?t have last names in Spira) Tribe: (human, Al Bhed, Ronso, Guado, Hypello) Age: (all tribes have pretty much the same life span) Birthplace: (the name of the town or village the character was born in, can be original) Appearance: (picture is fine, description goes as well) Personality: (what the character is like, how it acts and behaves) Story: (not the whole biography from childhood, just what?s the character?s position in the world and why it wants to join Rikku) Weapon: (something that fits the world of Spira, should have a specific name and power as well and a described appearance or a picture if possible) Ability: (list ten skills that relate to each others (like ten Black Magic spells) with the respective level (every tenth) that they are learned) Overdrive: (special powerful move that can only be used every once in a while, this should also be as original as possible) To give an example, here?s the information of my character: Name: Rikku Tribe: Al Bhed Age: 20 Birthplace: Home, Bikanel Island Appearance: Picture. Her blonde hair has grown significantly, and she now wears it tied into three long braids. She has the swirly eyes of the Al Bhed, hers are colored green. Her build is small and slender and dexterous. She?s accompanied by her purple pet monkey, Gigi Jr. Personality: Even though she has calmed down some from her teenage years, Rikku is still a lively and optimistic young woman. She is quick to make friends but also quick to get angry. She is easy to annoy and she?s also a bit gullible, but she?s also a good trickster. At this moment she feels a little lost in life and she?s searching for a new direction. Story: Rikku is the daughter of Cid, the leader of the Al Bhed. She grew up in the hard-working community of her tribesmen, but she didn?t quite catch the same industriousness. She?s more of a free-spirited wanderer, doing whatever she feels like. Five years ago, she bumped into a mysterious youngster and helped him. They got separated, but later when Rikku was trying to rescue her cousin Yuna from a certain death, she was surprised to find the same young man acting as Yuna?s guardian. Together they ended the Spiral of Death but with a grave cost: the youngster faded away, being just a dream of the Fayth. Two years later, Rikku and Yuna found themselves on a quest to save the world again, this time from a ghost of the past. They were joined by Paine, a sultry female warrior, and together they formed the formidable Sphere Hunter trio YRP. With the power of friendship and love, they banished the ghost back to where it came from, and as a reward the Fayth gave Yuna her beloved young guardian back. Now, three years after that, Rikku is working for her father again. She is helping him to build a New Home (the original having been destroyed five years backwards) to Djose, with high hopes of reuniting the tribe of Al Bhed back to one again. Weapon: Wishing Star, a projectile weapon that is shot from a gauntlet, especially effective against machines Ability: Gigi Jr. ? she ushers her pet monkey to cause havoc upon enemies
Level 1: Mug! ? Gigi Jr. steals an item from an enemy causing some damage Level 10: Liquid Trick ? Gigi Jr. pees on an enemy causing water damage Level 20: Gouge! ? Gigi Jr. silences an enemy causing some damage Level 50: Sparkling Claws ? Gigi Jr. scratches an enemy causing thunder damage Level 60: Infect! ? Gigi Jr. poisons an enemy causing some damage Level 70: Fiery Tail ? Gigi Jr. attacks with his blazing tail causing fire damage Level 80: Swarm! ? Gigi Jr. calls his relatives to attack all enemies Level 90: Hanuman ? And don?t hesitate to ask if anything is left unclear.

I don't understand why you have to involve humans with magic rings to this? Why can't it just be real gods versus real goddesses? And it would be good if you'd build up some tension between the gods and the goddesses, meaning why they fight against each others? What are their motives? Just showing off who are stronger is kind of childish... Maybe they should have something to fight over (a special mortal, a relic/treasure of some sort, maybe ambrosia that keeps them immortal like in the Greece mythology). But as I always say when I deal my advices on this forum, it's your RPG and you make the choices. ;D

Sweet action, yes, but not much else... :/ I loved the Phoenix-part of the storyline, but there were also too many extra characters just floating around to be of significance in only one scene (
Angel, Multiple Man, Kitty, Rogue, Cyclops, Moira MacTaggert
) as if only to appease fans of the series by making an appearance. The bad guys (except Magneto) were a brainless bunch of cannon fodder, and I can't say that the good guys were developed much either. It felt like the makers couldn't fit all the additional "spices" to the central plot in an excusable way, so they just threw it all in. So storywise, it left much to be yearned, but to those who favor flashy action scenes and heroic deeds (and I'm not saying they're bad qualities for films, I just want something more) will surely be pleased with this movie. The fights, the masks, the stunts, the explosions, the special effects (like
Magneto moving the Golden Gate Bridge
) and such were all superb. The actors were also top-notch, many big names in there, but as said, many of them could've used a little more substance in their characters to work with.

Yay, a great ending! ;D Although the last bit with Dash being an actual person was kind of confusing... I guessed that this was about the Multiple Personality Disorder a good while ago, but I didn't want to spoil to those who didn't get it yet. It seems you've been inspired by both "Lost" and the movie "Identity" with this game. It was a great game to play, although confusing at times, and I'm truly happy we finished it! Not many RPGs here make it to the end... Thanks for the ride, everybody!

Just five of them left. They all stared at the dark doorway and the bent, broken metal door lying against the wall next to it. Dash swinged the torch he was carrying towards the darkness, but it had no effect. Behind them, a thick black mist was rising. They were certainly caught between the devil and the deep sea. Suddenly a chilly breeze came from the darkness ahead of them. "Whooo... aaare... yooou...?" a thin voice asked from the other side of the door. "I wish I knew..." Dash sighed, closing his eyes. "Cooome... iiin...." the long-winded voice urged them. "Spooky!" Avian gasped. "Should we?" Kat asked, looking at the others. Mike, who was giving support to Jane, nodded. "This is it. There's no turning back now." "We have nowhere else to go", Jane whispered. "It's settled then", Dash said confirmingly. "We go in!" The five of them walked steadily through the broken door into the endless darkness. For a while Dash couldn't see even the torch he held. A steady, pumping noise came all over them. "Like a beating heart..." Avian said somewhere close to Dash. Suddenly light began to increase. Dash could make out the silhouettes of his companions besides him. As the darkness dispersed, they found themselves in a spherical room with red, veiny, organic walls that pumped in unison. In the middle of the room was a hovering sleeping figure wearing a white hospital gown. "Alex?" Kat whispered. OOC: Again, hope I didn't push this too far. I just feel like it's time we begin to wrap this game up. It's been intriguing, really!

I think everybody suffering from said block should write a poem/short story about it. Who knows, it could really help! ;D Your poem was almost like improvised rapping (I don't know if you were aiming for that, though), meaning it was a bit off with the rhythm and rhimes, yet very entertaining. Knows your funniness no limits?! XP
I wish there were more Firefly for me to watch.
I can't agree more. The series was truly a groundbreaker in the field of science-fiction, and it's a shame more people didn't realize that. I was very excited about the release of Serenity, the movie based on Firefly, but of course with such high expectations one is bound to get disappointed. The movie was all about brainless action, mock "witty" comments of which only few were atually funny (unlike in the series) and fanservice (River's transformation to a slutty killing machine was a total shock to me). So yeah, I miss the show...

If you could meet other OtakuBoards members, would you?
Sandy replied to a topic in General Discussion
The only OtakuBoards member that I've met personally is Minako, who isn't a very active visitor here (she participated in the Legionnaires, though). Minako's family is Finnish but she lives in America. However, when she came here for an exchange year, we decided to hang out for a day. It was a fun day, there was two of her friends with us as well. It was also very exciting, because we hadn't seen each other before that, and didn't know much anything about each other either. There's a big risk in seeing anonymous online acquaintances, but luckily most of the human population is trustworthy. I'd be more than happy to see other members as well, if only I didn't live miles and miles away from everybody else. XP -
I went to see Da Vinci Code on Friday on it's premiere, and I quite liked it. Mind you, I haven't read the book, so the plot was unknown for me. The story and the plot was the best part in my opinion (I'm a sucker for riddles and conspiracies), but it really doesn't have anything to do with the makers of the movie. Some of the adaption was sucky, for example the fact that you pretty much knew who were "bad guys" (that's almost everybody except Hanks and Tatou, really) from the very first time they appeared. Ian MacKellen was a refreshing exception to this, I really loved his character. Excentric and witty, and he even had a motive for his actions in the end. What comes to other actors, I believe Hanks was stiff because he meant to be that. It was part of his role work. Tatou was sweet and fitting for the role, the story just didn't give much space to her. I have to say I really liked the historical flashbacks and the visualized thoughts, they added an eerie aura of their own to the movie. All in all, the movie made me view certain things from a whole different angle, but I guess reading the book would've had a similar effect.
Your character's life took place in the early 20th century...and if you read the first post in this thread, you'll actually see what century the story takes place in. I think I listed it as the twenty-third century or something...
What?! You mean like 1900-1930? Gah, why didn't you say so! I put my character to live in a near future, with the Neoculturals and all! I was thinking about adding them to my character's story, but if he's been in coma for many hundred years, no such terrorists exist anymore... I should've paid closer attention, that's all. :/ I guess I'll just erase them from my character's biography, then. I'll surely be able to add my character to other plot twists. ;D EDIT: Didn't erase the cultural terrorists, just changed the wording a bit so they don't sound too important. I also had to get rid of the bleached highlights because they didn't fit the era. XP

Uh, there's no FF VII title coming for the Xbox 360. I don't know where you got that from... What comes to the series, there's the original Final Fantasy VII for the PlayStation. Then there's the sequel DVD-movie Advent Children (taking place 2 years after the original game). Dirge of Cerberus, a First Person Shooter-game for the PlayStation 2 happens one year after the movie. Before Crisis, a mobile game that's going to be released in America sometime in the future starts six years before the original game, but it spans all the way to the beginning of FF VII. Finally, there's Crisis Core, a title for PlayStation Portable that features Zack, Cloud's friend from his time serving the Shinra Corps. It's also a prequel. So they're all one big, "polymorphic" family with one storyline. Surely there's bound to be some inconsistencies and plotholes here and there, but they all tell the same story from different perspectives.

I just posted my sign-up, but it left me wondering exactly how "super" can our characters' abilities be? My character's skills at this point are not quite superhero material, but he has some pretty uncommon traits... I also made an interesting notification from the sign ups: almost all of the characters are either 21, 24 or 26 years old. So I made mine 23. :P

Name: Bellerophon Adrianopoulos, named after a hero of the Ancient Greece. Age: 23 Gender: Male Origins: Athens, Greece Biography: Bellerophon grew up with his mother and five siblings. Being the third oldest, he felt he never got the attention he needed. His father worked in a museum in Acropolis, but he got killed in a bombing by a group of anti-cultural activists whose mission is to destroy the remains of ancient civilizations that they claimed "held back progression". One of Bellerophon's ambitions became to fight back the cultural terrorists by restoring ancient artefacts. Despite his mother's resistance, he studied restoration and started to work in a museum just like his late father. From his work he has gained a vast knowledge about ancient mythologies, especially Mediterranean ones. Bellerophon's other ambition was swimming. His family lived in the coast of Mediterranean, and in his childhood it was common for Bellerophon to spend entire days in the beach swimming and collecting seashells. He competed in his school's swimming team, but despite his success he chose another career. Nevertheless, water is still the element he is most comfortable with. Personality: Bellerophon is determined and ambitious, always aiming toward something and doing everything he can to achieve his goals. He also has a strong sense of justice, although it can sometimes be obscured by his equally strong will. He isn't a very sociable person, he even comes off to some people as cold and cocky. However, inside he's still the insecure kid who always had to work twice as hard as others to get attention. Appearance: Bellerophon has shoulder-length dark curly hair. His skin is tanned, and after the genetic transmutation it became water-resistant. His body is slim but muscular, like that of a professional swimmer. His eyes are a peculiar of dark blue, with a tinge of green in them. He usually has a serious expression on his face and he often squeezes his hands into fists. Animal Genes: Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) Hybrid Abilities:
Echolocation: Bellerophon is able to receive mental images of his surroundings based on echoes. This is especially useful in dark places and underwater. Fast learning: Bellerophon can memorize things much faster than other humans, as well as keep them in his memory longer. His logical thinking and problem-solving skills are also increased. Enhanced movement in water: His genetically enhanced muscles allow Bellerophon to practically slide through water with overall boosted speed and agility.

It was confusing that Alex had suddenly regained his memory. Dash couldn't still remember anything but the trailer wagon he used to live in, and now even it was fading away, like it had just been a dream... Dash couldn't bear to look at the room filled with corpses. Alex claimed that he knew them all, but Dash was sceptical. How did they end up here? What kind of island was this? Were they even on Earth anymore? "This is insane!" Dash exclaimed. "Why can't the rest of us remember anything? Aren't we real? Am I even real...?" He felt a hot tear running down his cheek. Here we go again... The feeling of depression returned in an overwhelming wave of sensation. Was it a sign that he did in fact exist? Dash didn't know. All he knew that he wanted to huddle up to a distant corner, far away from everybody else, and cry himself to death. "No", Alex replied suddenly. "You will get your memories back too, I'm sure of that. We're so close!" He then gave an encouraging smile at Dash and patted him on the shoulder. Dash looked at the others through his teary eyes. Alex, Mike, Avian, Jane and Kat. Just the six of them... "Let's move on", Mike grunted. OOC: Hope I didn't give out too much. Whatever the reality is, I felt that Alex feels the need to encourage the others,
as if to hold on to them, perhaps
.

Well, as there's no real definition of a "good signature", a simple solution would be to look at other people's sigs and pick some elements you like the best (like fonts, colors, what type of things you say in it etc.). Just don't copycat, make it your own. If you're talking about a banner, however, there's an own section for requesting them, called Art By Request.

Dash was slowly becoming numb of all these deaths. It seemed that just as he was getting to know one of the others better, he would wind up dead. Everybody else were looking at each other suspiciously, but Dash just stared at the body without a trace of emotion in his face. "What's the matter, Dash?" Jane asked, placing her hand on his shoulder. "He won't be the last. This will continue until we are all dead", Dash said grimly, yet still calm. He sensed that his serenity frightened the others, who had known him with all his mood swings. "But who or what could've done this?" Avian asked in despair. "It's like the life was drained out of him! There are no marks of how he died." "What kind of pathologist are you?" Mike grunted. "I say we head on! Dash is right; whatever killed Clark and Luther and the others will take us out one by one. Our only solution now is to reach the heart of this temple." "What makes you so sure?!" Avian screamed so that her voice echoed through the hallways. "There could be nothing but darkness down there! Endless, suffocating darkness..." "What are the options?" Kat asked quietly. Alex nodded, and slowly they gathered their few belongings, covered Luther's corpse with one of the blankets, and walked deeper into the temple.
-
The four of them looked at the waterfall, trying not to think of the carnage behind it. Luther turned to Dash. "What do we do now?" Dash knew what he wanted to do - he had wanted to do that for quite a while. "We go to the temple. We will get our answers there, I'm sure of it." For the first time in this whole time he had spend in the island, Dash was calm. Not moody, angsty or hyper, just serene, and sure of himself. Luther and Avian nodded, but Jane hesitated. "But there was this man..." Jane said, but Avian just took her by the shoulder. "Whoever he was, you're safer with us. We have somehow managed to survive even though people all around us have been slaughtered. Come with us to the temple, okay?" Dash turned away from the waterfall towards the ruined city.
-
Dash watched silently as first Kat snook out of the camp, and not much later Mike, his eyes burning with rage. Dash couldn't understand Mike's mood - it's not like he knew Clark very well or anything. Dash guessed that Mike just had a strong sense of justice... "This is stupid!" Avian sighed to Dash and Luther. The three of them were the only ones still remaining in the camp. "Why are we three waiting here to get eaten or shot or otherwise butchered when the others helped themselves and left?! It's not like we can trust that Sharpe-guy. He could be the killer for all we know!" "But Mike..." Luther started. "What about him? He's a bull-headed fool!" Avian nearly screamed. "Alright!" Dash said sternly, standing up. "What do you suggest we do, then? Where do we go?" "Back to the waterfall to the others, of course!" Avian replied, grabbing the small backbag she had brought with her on the excursion. Dash nodded. "I'm fine with that. I just have this awful feeling that something horrible has happened to them as well..." Avian and Dash headed out of the camp. Luther looked at the way Mike had gone, and made his decision. "Hey, wait for me!"

Based on these first bits of information, I feel a bit iffy about the Final Fantasy XII games. I mean, if people thought FF XII was breaking the tradition of the series too much, what about this one that consists of three separate games?! :/ I reckon it'll suffice to play the actual FFXIII, but then there's Versus (an action game รก la Dirge of Cerberus) that has a different world with different characters, but it's somehow based on the same myth as the main game as well. And then there's Agito, a mobile game. And they're all being directed by different persons. Final Fantasy XIII seems to have caught the disease called "polymorphism". Is it a good thing or not, only time will tell. Looks magnificent, though.

I'm not in favor of the FFVII remake, because no matter what they do to it, the original will always be considered better by those who've played it. I bet many of the fans that are desperately clamoring for the remake will ultimately - if it's published - be disappointed. I can already hear all those "but Aeris doesn't look that way!" "They've got Nibelheim all wrong!" "What's up with these dorky summons?" etc. I believe it was Yoichi Wada (president of S-E), who said that there would not be a remake for FFVII as long as the original game could be played with the current console. It wouldn't be the first time a man has eated his words, though... Anyhow, my opinion is that after all these sequels and prequels and remakes, S-E should start to concentrate completely on making some new stuff. Besides, all the ravaging fans have already got AC, BC, DC and soon CC - will they settle for nothing?!

Actually, Soul Calibur III has a technical error that sometimes corrupts save files. The problem lies somewhere in the Chronicles of the Sword -part of the game. My first save file got corrupted as well, but after I deleted it and started all over, it's been working with no problems. I'm no expert when it comes to stuff like this, but at least in SCIII's case, the corruption is the game's fault, not the memory card's.
