Originally posted by JCBaggee First off, PS 1 is the PSX, only smaller. No difference, just a more convienant travel size. Second, the PS1/PSX is not popular because no one wants to play on graphics lesser than what we have, which is really a shame. There's still a fairly large market for classic games, as recent re-releases of Super Mario Bros.(as Super Mario Deluxe) has proven, despite what level the graphics are. Plus, they don't want anything with a less than in depth storyline, which really can't be accounted for. The simple problem: the gamers today are getting younger and younger, and they don't know what classic is. I'm only 17, but I do believe I prefer the original Nintendo over some of the crap that's out today.
I agree that some classic Nintendo games are much better than some of the uninspired junk we have out there today. I wish that Microsoft and Sony would be a little more choosy on what they let pass through the pipes. You bring up an interesting point though about how successful classic remakes are and it relates a little to what I just said. Presently, it's difficult for new franchises to beome established. There's just so much crap out there that a lot of people only buy something for its face value. If a game doesn't have a significant historical backing, or an innovative feature that really stands out as extraordinary, it's easy for it to become buried within the overwhelming software hitting the shelves. Last Christmas I would have hated to be releasing something for PS2, that's for sure. I hear that cool titles like Jak and Daxter even failed for the very reasons mentioned above. 'Tis sad, very sad. Especially since garbage like the new Crash Bandicoot games will probably sell better than some of the higher quality gems out there.

You guys are silly! :whoops: I remember back a little while ago you were all excited when Square and Capcom made deals with Nintendo, but now that Rare may spread some of its franchises to other platforms you're all long faced. It would be great to spread Perfect Dark to other consoles. Why? Because they have the best plans concerning online gaming. Rare has always included a strong multiplayer aspect in its first person shooters, so what better way to continue that tradition by exploring other platforms that offer better online services. Makes sense right? Nintendo would be just fine without Rare as a second party anyway. Most of their titles are just knock-offs of already established Nintendo formulas. Look at how blatantly Diddy Kong Racing copies Mario Kart. Likewise for Banjo Kazooie compared to Mario with its hunting and gathering aspects. The Donkey Kong franchise also goes along those lines. The new Star Fox games will combine elements from Zelda and flying areas similar to the staple Star Fox games. Conker ran along the lines of Mario as well, but with swear words. All in all, Rare would probably stay focused on Nintendo and never abandon them. I don't see what all the fuss is about. Sheesh.
Originally posted by Sephiroth heh, I think one day you got james so ticked off that he banned you, and then I got you unbanned, lol.... I think people would have remembered you as pan man if you had your radioactive man avatar :p
Nah, Shinji banned me. I'm not even sure if James was around during the Hump war....or was he? Hmm anyhow, it was because a lot of people were making fun of Hump and I did too good of a job. I impersonated him with the name of Big Papa Dump or something like that and started making fun of him. Remember he banned me by accident and let the real Hump stay? lol. Anyway, yeah you bailed me out of that one. :toothy: Maybe I will bring back Radioactive Man if it's still on the list, once I get bored of my Hulkamania Still Rules Av.
Originally posted by Sephiroth the hump era was pure joy to me, sniff.... heh, I remember your old name, the great frying pan man! hilarity ensued.... was I a masterdebator? I can't remember, I don't think I was yeah, foredaddy and galaxy girl are rarely on nowadays, heh, foredaddy was one crazy mofo, lol I tried talking to you on aim twice, one time I think your brother said you were busy or something, and the other time you weren't replying, heh fight club still rules to this day, enough said....
Yep, I know you had a good time during the hump era. You withdrew your masamune and he withdrew his (well, we won't go there). At least he wasn't persistant in coming back though. Nope, you weren't a MASTERdeBATOR. You started your fight club thing around the same time though, so you had your own lil' clique. Tried talking to me twice? Bah, lol, I'm surprised he even talked back to you. Although we both have the same account he rarely uses my SN because he doesn't want me to know his friends' SNs. About me not replying..I dunno 'bout that one. Could have been him....could have been my WONDERFUL Aol account. lol, sometimes my buddy list won't even come up! I'm surprised how many people didn't know I was Pan Man. I acted pretty similar to my Pan Man days when I first started using the Crazy White Boy name. Bah, getting a little more mature isn't that bad though, I guess. At least I still have the trophy for largest and most obscene group ever.
Originally posted by RicoTranzrig I heard that Tekken 4 for PS2 is going to be the first game presented in progressive scan (High definition) Is that true?
Yep, it has the 525p progressive scan mode. Holding the triangle and X buttons after putting the game in will bring up a screen that gives you the option of toggling progressive scan mode on....or so I hear.....
Originally posted by Solid Snake You see, anyone can be cheap and start smashing buttons. When this happens, the game is no longer a game of skill, it is to see who can press the buttons the fastest.
Yep, that's why I love counter moves. ;)

The Scorpion King actually surprised me. I saw it with a lot of skepticism, but found myself having a good time watching it. The movie never takes itself seriously and it's not supposed to. Lines like "People don't go to the valley of the dead. That's why they call it the valley of the dead," prove that everything is all in good fun. The pacing of the movie was excellent. It caters to the audience that it's supposed to--teenage (or slightly above) males. The action was non stop, with tons of fire effects (although I've never seen real flaming swords). Although, The Rock isn't the greatest actor in the world, he didn't need to be. He really doesn't have many lines. Honestly, he was born to play this role. Visually, he fits his character perfectly and never tries too hard . His first line is "Boo!" Micheal Clark Duncan Jr. does a great job of playing a well-rounded character. Although, I wouldn't compare it to his work in "The Green Mile" I still give him a thumbs up. So, I recommend seeing the movie if you want to have an hour and a half of good fun. You won't be seeing the best movie of the year, but it'll be worth the price of admission.
Originally posted by BabyGirl Crazy White Boy- I completely forgot about your old name! I remember that...hah! How fun! I believe I became a MASTERdeBATOR soon before the fall of V2 :)
Hehe, yeah it was a blast. I remember a made a little theme song up based on Captain Planet and everyting. And most people had to answer the wise old question that has tortured even the most scholarly, well, scholars in "How much wood could a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood" *rocks back and forth in his ole' rocker* Now all of my little MASTERdeBATORS have grown up and gone out on their own. Brings a tear of joy to mine eyes I tell ye.
Originally posted by Squashed Snail It's gonna turn out like Invasion again sort of. I mean, RAW wrestlers will start joining the nWo (Big Show :angry2: ), and vice versa..... If it does turn out like that, I won't be watching it for too long.... And where the hell has The Rock gone too?! [EDIT] Crap, he's on SMACKDOWN..... :drunk:[/EDIT]
The Rock is promoting "The Scorpion King" and after that he'll be filming "Hellderado" and perhaps "The Scorpion King 2." Unfortunately, chances are, he won't be back (regularly) for another year. Compound this with Kurt Angle leaving WWF for two years to train for the 2004 Olympics, DDP possible retiring do to an injury and Lita being out of action for six to nine months because of an injury and you've got trouble. Basically, WWF is turning into WCW (that's not a good thing). Ever single face lost at Backlash except for Hogan. Coincidence? I think not... Hogan's fine though, but if they bring back Goldberg I will really be a little tired of wrestling. The "What" chants are bad enough. We don't need more annoying crap.

Like many of you, I really liked version 2. I joined like, right during the "Hump Era," so it was a little chaotic at first, but after things settled down I had a lot of fun. Basically, I made up the most god awful name I could think of (being unique is cool though) and posted a bunch of silly things. Telling jokes was kinda fun and the MASTERdeBATORS stuff took off a little more than I thought it would. Once and a while I would post something "intelligent" but most of my time I was a little arrogant. I remember I had a pretty long feud with Altron Gundam just over who knew more about DBZ, lol. I made some neat friends though like Foredaddy and Galaxy Girl (both of whom are around rarely now adays). At least Seph's still around, though I haven't gotten around to talking to him on AIM yet. Boy, did I get away with a lot back then though. I remember I made a topic in general discussion called, "The boards are being taken over and I mean now!" Basically it was about mutant, ear raping monkeys from outer space that were protectable against coconut ear muffs. Yeah, it was kinda hilarious, but I guess it was a little pointless and really didn't get me across as an intelligent person much. Oh man, I even had my first accidental run in with James in the Nintendo forum. Keep in mind I was fairly arrogant still. I figured I'd make a post about how bad GameCube is gonna be and such, and people wouldn't have anything useful to say. Needless to say, I got a mouthful, heh. Ah well, definitely the version 2 'tak. Fight Club ole' school is still where it's at. ;)
Originally posted by Kouberei So what was the basic storyline on the first game? Was you're guy in a gang or something?
Nah, Ryo was squeaky clean. At the outset of the game, Ryo comes home to find a mysterious man named Lan Di beating on his father. Ryo tries to help, but Lan Di is too strong. This msterious man and his gang want Ryo's father's Dragon Mirror. Reluctantly, Ryo's father hands it over in exchange for his son's safety. Although Lan Di allows Ryo to live, as promised, he kills Ryo's father (as they have some sort of unresolved past). The basic plot of the game is revenge. Ryo goes on a quest to find out as much about Lan Di as possible while hunting down the other mirror to prevent Lan Di from becoming all powerful. There are sub plots like a love story, but I basically covered the gist of it. ;)

The first Shenmue was definitely beautiful. The graphics were superior to most PS2 games for quite some time. Included, were small details like independent leaves falling from trees (something that the makers of DOA3 bragged about in their own game). Really though, the acting was pretty poor. Ryo never developed much as a likable character to me. He personality in the dubbing was monotone--robotic in a way. The actual gameplay was pretty good though. There was sure an astonishing amount of interaction with the surroundings. I remember going through the refrigerator and practically every drawer in his house! The "real world" system was neat too, if a little flawed. Surroundings actually changed to reflect seasons and weather patterns, all of which suprised me with their detail. My only real problem with the first game was how boring it could be sometimes (a complaint that a lot of people have). Usually, I could find something to do, but a lot of the time I just wanted to get on with the story instead of playing darts in the local bar for about seven hours (game time). I was going to get the second game. T'was too expensive though. I had the money, but I couldn't see spending $70 bucks for a game (with the converter) when an Xbox version will come out that I'll want to buy when the time comes.

Writing Today's Poem [M -- As a Precaution]
Charles replied to Heaven's Cloud's topic in Creative Works
There's a quarter lying on the floor paltry pocket change, nothing more tainted, stained, weathered A dead president collapsed face down before the door I've seen many like it before Some slip slyly from a messy pocket amidst crumpled bills, shopping lists, jingling keys and bubble gum rapping others seemingly explode free a silver rocket crash landing, spiraling, with a tinny tapping dropped from a branch, a runt sapling Reluctant to move for such a fare, I oft declare "It's nothing to me." Just this very morning, a woman, a stranger, was in need of bus fare "A quarter sir," she asked "Sorry," I replied with a blank stare On I went without a care A quarter, really Minuscule money is hardly something But, what is a fortune to a man who has nothing? Speckled in dust, a coin on the street rests Undisturbed People, busy, on their way desire more than a quarter for their time of day Feet shuffle by, sneakers slapping, shoes clapping cares whoosh along, unknowing beasts controlled by the strong What if I need this quarter someday to get where I'm going? More feet shuffle by And so do I unknowing. -
Stand back! There's a white boy coming through! I fixed the title of this thread, so worry about that no longer. ;) This is kind of like a favorite thread, but I think it's done in a clever, intelligent sort of way, so I'll let it pass unless people start doing one word posts and stuff ('Begin Post' Rpg 'End post'). I'm most addicted to action games and rpgs. I tend to lose interest with most fighters fairly quickly, but a good quest never fails to keep me coming back to the controller after a long day of busting my butt.
Originally posted by Sephiroth hah! you....defeat me in tekken? I think not, my crazy white friend, for you see it is I that won the tekken 3 computer exchange birmingham competition back in early 2000 where I won my butt a dreamcast, I am unbeatable, now I await the next tournament, I heard rumours that it will be tekken tag or soul calibur this time, I say boo to that! when tekken online finally comes around, I'll be getting ready to beat some online butt!
Oh man, now look what I've done, gulp. Birmingham competition you say? *tugs at collar while sweating nervously* Man, I better get to practicing for you foo' because I'll never hear the end of it if word gets out that you embarrassed me in the game. :bawl:

They've actually went and improved the analog sticks so that they feel more like Playstation 2's (a great move). But, I think that the secondary buttons (small black and white ones) are out of place. The shoulder buttons seem a little better as well. Overall, it's a pretty nice variation, but it still won't win accolade as the best controller out there.
Originally posted by Solid Snake There is no doubt in my mind that the "control responsiveness" in these two games has nothing to do with which one is better, and I don't see how you assumed I said as such because I had not. What I did say was that default buttons of moves one must perform was much easier with Tekken. Why? Because only the four main bottons (triangle, circle, x, and square) are used, which are either either punch or kick, and any begginner could go off and just keep taping them, and sometimes even win! How is it more challenging with Virtua Fighter 4? Because triangle/x/R1 punches, circle/R2 kicks, square blocks, L1 grabs, and L2 switches body movement. It makes you think and memorize some of your moves, or else you will be kicked to the curb. Ugh, I didn't say that I smash buttons, and I can assure you that I feel that anyone who DOES use that technique will have something coming. It is no way to play any game, much less a fighting game, and I just don't believe in doing that. However, for testing sake, I like to get a feel for the actual game. Therefore, not only do I learn the techniques and watch the best combos and whatnot, but I also try once or twice to see how a begginner would fare by doing things randomly. I merely pointed out that they would have a much better chance at winning Tekken 4 than Virtua Fighter 4. There is a big difference from testing and using regularly. :blah:
Well, okay, I guess I see what you mean. I guess you just didn't get out what you wanted to say clearly. When you said "So/so controls" it comes across as saying that Virtua Fighter 4 is harder because it has a mediocre control scheme. You kind of covered the same things I did, but that one particular phrase threw me off a bit. :p Still though, I don't find Virtua Fighter 4's actual control setup to be complex at all. I memorized it within a few minutes and I'm not exactly what you'd call a Virtua Fighter 4 vet. I guess that Virtua Fighter 4's moves involve more mastery because they demand better timing and more involved motions. As for mashing buttons, you said "With Tekken 4, however, I got along just fine by pressing bottons sometimes." That, my friend, sounds like you're doing a little mashing on the buttons. And come on, all in all, you're saying that even though you're not the greatest Tekken player you have a much easier time with the A.I. than you do with Virtua Fighter 4. I'm not challenging you at all here. What I am saying is that at least both games can be difficult against skilled players. And do you know what? I play Kumite mode and am able to just repeatedly hit punch over and over again and I easily ring out a great deal of my opponents. So, you can really whoop the computer cheaply before they smarten up. I beat around seven opponents with this method before someone smartened up.
Originally posted by Final_Flash   Didn't that come out like half a year ago? Or was that just in NZ? o_O;;
Hmm, I'm pretty sure it has to be just NZ. This makes me wonder what the heck Sony is up to. They're confusing me!!! *falls over grabbing head and twitching intensely*
-
Um, I don't want to sound dumb, but what is the point you're trying to get across here? If you're curious as to why GameCube is cheap, it's because there is no built in DVD player or modem.... Or are you talking about the price drop?
-
Ok, so for Virtua Fighter 4 we see the controls as so-so. But with the controls so-so, we also notice how you cannot merely press bottons to win a match. You must use strategy to learn the moves and remember how to execute them quickly in battle. The latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly portrays my point perfectly: I have to admit, I was toppled my first time against the AI because I didn't releize that you must learn the moves clearly and perfectly before going out there and putting your talent against the best. With Tekken 4, however, I got along just fine by pressing bottons sometimes, and trying specific moves other times, both of which got me quite far.
Well, I tend to disagree with the basis of why you think the games play as they do. Acutal control reponsivenesss has nothing to do with which game plays better. As a matter of fact, both the Virtua Fighter and Tekken series have excellent control. Virtua Fighter 4's predecessors suffered from floaty jumps, but that was the extent of their problems. The reason the two series play differently is because of the way the A.I is programmed and because the movements needed to do combos and some powerful moves in Tekken are slightly less complex. Anyway, the A.I. in Virtua Fighter 4 will actually learn your attack patterns, where as it probably doesn't in Tekken. And dude, you may have gotten along fine mashing buttons in Tekken against the computer, but I can safetly say that a skilled player would whoop on you if you tried that. Seph's gonna find that out the hard way come online Tekken. Hehe, here's hoping he didn't read this whole post. Anyway, I doubt Tekken 4 will offer anything as in-depth as Kumite mode. Tekken Force mode is just beating up hordes of fighters. That kind of game always gets boring quickly. Kumite allows you to train an A.I fighter and unlock tons of secrets. Plus, it's hard as all heck.
Originally posted by 8520 hey whats happening to the ps1! some people still have them and its like its being forgotten! thats not fair...:flaming: i know the new consoles are way better but even the magazines are changing to the new consoles. :flaming: the only one there is left is OPM but that to xpensive (because of demo games it gives) :therock: :toothy: :drunk:
What's happening to the PSX you ask? Well, it's being phased out, just as all consoles do when they become technologically obsolete. I know it's disappointing to see a console you liked fade away, but it has to happen. This is all the process of evolution. If new consoles didn't come out and replace older ones, we'd still be playing Atari 2600 and what have you. More powerful hardware makes deeper gameplay, better graphics, etc. possible. Newer models don't really just apply to consoles either. Look at the automobile industry, computers, books, televisions, and the list goes on and on. In a bit of good news, Sony is showing some support for the console. This summer, I believe, they are releasing a game called "C-12." Expect it to be kinda like the Syphon Filter games in terms of gameplay.

I'm not really a big Spiderman fan, but I'm pretty anxious to see the movie. It's been in the works for quite some time now, and the special effects are nothing short of amazing. Let's just hope that they didn't pull a Star Wars: Episode 1 and focus too much on the special effects and neglect the story.
