Charles, I think your forgetting Kojima's trend of using gameplay graphics for all cinematics. I can't think of a MGS title that has used CG for cinamatics. So I'm very confident that MGS4 is no exception. Also, the scene with Raiden had a bit of a slow down, which may support this fact even more.
No I'm not. I know that the trailer wasn't CG. He proved that during a demonstration at the Tokyo Game Show if I'm not mistaken. What I'm saying is that the trailer was exclusively cinematics and didn't show any gameplay whatsoever. I would like to see real-time examples of decisions on the battlefield affecting gameplay.
-
See, my main problem with the Microsoft and Sony conferences was also the fact that many trailers showed very little authentic gameplay. Even Metal Gear Solid 4 showed nothing but cinematics. The trailers for Forza 2 and Fable 2 were especially disappointing. At least Gears of War showed real gameplay; it's obvious that the game still has frame rate and screen tearing issues, but it looks pretty good. I thought the level they showed was rather boring, but at least it was gameplay. Although a lot of the Wii trailers looked underwhelming, it's refreshing to see so many playable games. It's also important to note that until very recently developers were essentially given GameCube dev kits--so I expect a lot of improvement. And, how about the Super Smash Bros. announcement? From what I read a couple hours ago Snake and Cloud are going to be playable characters. It looked like Nintendogs was represented as well. Neat stuff. Also, if these images are real-time (which they seem to be), then they say a lot about the Wii's potential power. I'm mostly excited about what's coming to the portables though. The squad-based Metal Gear game for the PSP looks fantastic, along with Phoneix Wright 2 and Yoshi's Island 2 for the DS. Man, there are just countless others too. I've been frothing over the G&G remake for PSP for quite some time, for example. Oh yeah, and Super Paper Mario for the GameCube will be mine on day one. That is all.
First off, you're means you are; stuff like that kind of bugs me. Your is posessive which is the word you should have used. The phrase basically means you can't have everything. Relating it to a real life situation is a guy having a girlfriend with someone on the side to get nookie from every now and then.
I'm glad you thought your little grammar lesson was important enough to disrupt the thread for. Anyway, to the thread starter--it's important not to take colloquial expressions too literally. As has been said, it's just an informal way of saying you can't have everything you want. It's that simple.

My thoughts on Sony can be found in the Playstation 3 thread. In order to take the system home and pick up a couple of games I'll have to shell out close to a grand. I might get one when MGS 4 comes out if the price has dropped, but unless I win another contest, I probably won't be jumping on this one immdediately. Otherwise, I was a bit disappointed with the visuals in certain Wii titles, such as Metroid and Tony Hawk. I also wasn't fond of the slow turning in Red Steel, but Zelda and Super Mario Galaxy were awesome. I was also thrilled to see Super Paper Mario and Yoshi's Island 2. Star Fox DS also looked surprisingly good. So, overall I thought there were a lot of things to be excited about during Nintendo's conference. I just thought that it was paced a little oddly, showing Zelda first, and then ending with tennis. The fact that they're going to have 27 playable Wii games is a great advantage though. Microsoft didn't pull out a lot that surprised or impressed me. But, in order to hold a successful conference after the Sony debacle, all they had to do was no screw up majorly. So, mission accomplished. Some of their games looked really impressive, and the announcement of exclusive content in GTA 4 was nice. If anything, this year's E3 was indicative of a change in gaming. I think it might be a sign that the order of things is going to be shaken up.

Haha, also here's an interesting comparison of the Playstation 3 mock-up (left) and the final version (right): They removed most of the ports (more Sony downgrading), made it bigger, and finally added vents.
-
Yeah, I was expecting the conference to be underwhelming because Sony really set themselves up that way. I mean, first they released these incredible target videos that they were never going to match which raised expectations to an impossibly high level. Also, after their "Get a second job" comment last year I knew the price was going to be up there. Nevertheless, the conference was worse than I imagined. I thought Sony was on the right track when they decided to include a HDD with every console, but then they release an absolutely useless package. At least the core Xbox 360 could be "upgraded" with the HDD and be the same thing as a premium package. Sony's making the same mistake Sega did years ago. They're the console market leader, yet they've become followers. If they can retain their market share this time around I'll be incredibly surprised.
-
Did anyone see the conference today? Sony announced that they will release two versions. One will have a 20 gig drive and will retail for $499; the other will have 60 gigs and retail for $599. This was pretty much expected by anyone who knew anything. They also unveiled the Dual Shock 3 that has six degrees of motion-sensing movement. There's no acceleration. You can move it up and down, you have pitch and yaw and roll movement and it's wireless. It uses bluetooth technology but won't allow the full 3D movement that Nintendo's controller does. You'll just be tilting it. It seems somewhat awkward and unintuitive based on the Warhawk demonstration. The funniest part of all is that they claimed to be innovators because of this. Granted, the Wiimote is far more advanced and quite different in execution, but it's clear where they got the influence from. Anyway, hopefully we'll see some good uses come out of it at least. Edit: Also there will be no vibration in the controller. But the big news is that from what I'm reading the basic package will also lack WiFi, HDMI, and there will be no memory stick slot. So, that basically makes the basic package very undesirable. Unlike the Xbox 360 core package, it can't be upgraded. So, if you buy the Playstation 3 core package and want premium features, it looks like you'll have to buy a new system. That's how I interpret it thus far.
Also Gameplay si always more important than any other factor in any game(Ever) If you are gonna make something about story. Make a movie/book/w/e. Not a game. Games are supposed to be fun. A story is nice but if the gameplay sucks the game sucks. Period. PERIOD
Anyone who's read my opinions and mini review in this thread won't be surprised by this, but I agree with you completely. I was thoroughly bored by KH 2's gameplay and it made getting from cut scene to cut scene a chore. Whereas other developers enamored with cinematic flair, such as Kojima, somtimes bombards the gamer with cinematics, there's always a solid, thoroughly enjoyable game underneath. It's all about consolidation. Kingdom Hearts 2 is generally poor or mediocre whenever it comes time to pick up the controller. Having completed the game, I didn't find all the suffering I did just to see out the story worthwhile. Edit: Honestly, the most cinematic games I've played didn't really need a barrage of non-interactive movies to achieve cinematic flair. The Legend of Zelda series since Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, Resident Evil, Beyond Good & Evil, Ico, and countless other titles have proven that a game can provide a cinematic experience using camera angles, music, and atmosphere to appropriate effect.
Well, I have only been playing the game on 480p and I haven't had a hint of slowdown. The game is incredibly smooth on that resolution. However, I imagine that if you try to play the game on higher resolutions it might have problems. So I suppose it depends on your setup. Maybe 720p is the sweet spot. But I've really been enjoying it. Did you end up playing the demo?
Well yeah, I don't know how fast your download speed is, but for some reason it takes me anywhere from twenty to fourty-five minutes to download a demo. So, I always play them after going through the trouble. The demo was incredibly brief though. I think it contianed abridged (at least I hope so) versions of the very first two stages. I played it again as a refresher and the game moves at a blazing clip but whenever I turned it seemed jerky. The second level moves outdoors into desert trenches where there's a lot of action, so the frame rate took a noticable dive there. We're talking about a demo though; there have been several demos released on the marketplace with strange problems. I play in standard definition and don't see myself upgrading my television anytime soon so maybe when the price comes down I'll get on it. I'd have probably bought it out of impulse if March hadn't been so saturated with games I wanted.
-
I downloaded the demo from the marketplace a while ago. I was initially interested in getting the game but most reviews complained about gamebreaking slowdown; they said the frame rate dives so low that the game becomes unplayable. Have you noticed anything at all like this?
You mean turn you on. lol I know it would for me. As for the so called Kingdom Hearts 3 there are rumors going around that they would make it. The producer has plans on making it a game that goes before and after this whole issue with Xenahort and Sora, Riku, and the king. Overall though I am looking forward to it. :P
If anyone has any doubt that there will be another Kingdom Hearts, then they are really naive. There's absolutely no room for speculation here. It's from Square Enix and it makes money.
Wow I feel the exact same way as you do with everything you did say. One thing though that I really loved that you said, and actually your the first that I have seen say it other than me, is that the xbox or playstation isn't that great either. Also if your gonna complain about the name because it sounds weird in a sentence why can't you just say " Hey buddy bring over you nintendo alright!" or you can say " Hey buddy bring over your NW okay!". See simple as that, as for me I'll most likely call it by it's name, but whatever floats your boat.
Yeah, 50 cent, you know--the thing about video games is that they're a nerdy sub-culture in the first place. It's true that they're more mainstream now than they were when I was growing up, but generally they're not seen as "hip" or "trendy." The Wii sort of compounds that problem by sounding childish and embarrassing but I highly doubt that any of us are playing games to look cool in the first place. By changing the name to "Wii" Nintendo has riled up a bunch of nerds on message boards--but most of those same people will still buy it regardless because they're informed. Nintendo is hardly sabotaging themselves. Look at the sales Nintendogs pulled in; it's not exactly a hip concept but it's different, it's fresh. And that's just it--if this thing sells it's going to be because of the low price point, simplicity, developer-friendly nature, and unique controller are going to go a long way in moving it. Just imagine you're walking through a store and you see an Xbox 360 kiosk and a Wii kiosk set up adjacent to one another. Someone is playing a version of, say, Madden on both. The person playing Madden on the Xbox 360 is just going to be standing there idely playing Madden just how it's been played for years while the person playing Wii is jerking the controller to hike the ball, and moving the controller in an arc to throw it. I have a feeling that when you watch people playing Wii it's just going to look more "fun." When people see that and the prices--a lot of jaded message board gamers are going to be in for a surprise of the Nintendogs variety. I mean, the average non-gamer would probably never give Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 kiosks a serious chance, but the Wii is going to be something different that's going to make them want to stop and pick up a controller. I think that's the goal here. And, the distance in graphics between the Wii and the other systems isn't going to be so bad. Take a look at Red Steel and then look at some Untold Legends screens for the Playstation 3. Sure, it runs in 1080p but, so what? The screens thus far look like crap. I know that's a bad comparison since they're two completely different styles of games and I know that there will be phenominal-looking Playstation 3 titles, but my point is that generally-speaking, the difference shouldn't be too huge. So, that's my opinion. Name's absolutely terrible. System and concept are the opposite.
The Nintendo Revolu- err..Wii? Squat. Nothing. Zip. Nada. There is a game coming out called Red Steel, and by no means does it cater to females or children, that utilizes the Wii's stupid looking TV remote to the fullest but unless you are actually anticipating the Wii this game has no appeal to you whatsoever. Nintendo has to blame themselves though, they're trying to be like Sony and not reveal so much but as it stands right now, in my eyes...Nintendo changed the name to get attention.
First of all, stop being stupid. Now, that that's out of the way--ever heard of Mario? Or Metroid? Or Super Smash Brothers? Or Zelda? Or Pikmin? Or Animal Crossing? Or Mario Kart? How the hell can you arrive at the conclusion that Red Steel is the only choice on the Wii? As a matter of fact, EA has announced a unique version of Madden that's going to take full advantage of the controller while Nintendo plans to unveil a racing game at E3. There is even rumblings that Konami has something to show. What makes it worse is that we haven't even seen anything tangible regarding Halo 3 yet. The project's been super-secretive to the point where Bungie has denied that it even exists. I'm not saying that it doesn't but you're singing its praises a little early. The same goes for Gears of War. We don't even know how well it plays. Lastly, Nintendo's not being like Sony so much as for a while they've been trying to cover their own ***** and make sure that their ideas weren't stolen. Otherwise, there hasn't been a reason for them to put all their cards down on the table. The same goes for Sony. They're launching much later than the Xbox 360 did. The Wii is going to launch sometime in the fall and Nintendo has revealed enough already for you to have a good idea of what to expect. E3 will definitely be more revealing--because that's what it's for. As for the name itself--I'll never prefer it over "Revolution." I do like the aesthetic value to "Wii" and the simplicity of it, but the "Revolution" name reflected that the system stood for something big, the unique ideals Nintendo is embracing. The name "Revolution" automatically made it sound like the smart choice, the choice that's going against the grain. "Wii" is a sort of self-defeating purpose because it's not all-inclusive. It sounds silly and embarrassing. Then again, the "GameCube" didn't sound cool either, and neither does the "Xbox" or the "Playstation." So, I don't really care. They could call it the Nintendo Dogcrap and I'd still buy it. It's all about the games for me, man.

Sorry. The bible is all about interpretation. It's impossible to have a debate as to whether it is "right" or not. It's not as if you're studying a biography on the Vietnam war.
No matter what your hobby is someone is going to think it is stupid. Watching professional sports, sewing, dog shows, cooking, gardening, collecting stuff....someone somewhere thinks it's dorky. So what. Do what you like, why should their opinion hold any merit when you are the one enjoying it.
Panda, you are fantastic.
Charles, I shortened the quote. Having a quote so ridiculously long compared to the main part of your post makes the boards messy and a pain to read. Just quote the part you need to. -r2
Oh r2, I'm so so so very sorry. I hadn't realized that I had quoted such a ridiculously long three paragraph post. Thank you for sweeping in and responding to this problem before it got out of hand. I definitely don't want to make a habit out of this reckless behavior. I in no way want to make users sift through posts of such unparalleled magnitude. I am eternally thankful for your extremely useful guidance. Here's a tip for you. You may want to private message users when you make edits to their posts. Otherwise, there's the chance they may not re-enter the thread and see your valuable instruction. But then again, geez, what would I know.

I hated the online play in Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. Don't even bother with it. People either exploit the system or use cheats to the point where it's not even fun. Additionally, the Metal Gear Solid gameplay feels awkward in all but one mode. The total package is more than worth it but I wouldn't rush out and buy a network adaptor for it.

Yeah, I just figured I would post some images to show exactly how damaging meth addiction is, just to put this into perspective.
With all due respect to your advice, Charles, that's not neccessarily true. Just last week one of my friends started dating a guy she knew for years who is her best friend. I know a few couples who knew each other since elementary school and started going out.
Well, I certainly don't mean to say that it's impossible for two people to form a romantic relationship after a long-term friendship but it still is something he should be careful with. There's also the issue of possibly jepordizing a long-term friendship with a romantic relationship. At any rate he really shouldn't have to form a long-standing relationship with a girl for her to know his intentions are good--if he carries himself properly. As I previously said, in order to accomplish anything at all, he'll have to be a little less weird and clingy in the future.
well in situations like these i always sem to find it helpful to just smack her over the head or something.....no talking seriously here you can do either one of two things. create a situations with the drugs where you'll scare her so much she'll just quti (i.e. raped because she got knocked out on meht or coke etc.) or you can let her hit her own head on the wall(learn from experience). when she realizes she screwed up then you can be all "i told you so" about it. but hey thats just me. good luck with the situation though. and p.s. in my opinion you dont need friends like those
LOL, you've got to be kidding. You can't scare someone out of a drug addiction like this. We're beyond Truth ads. Do you even realize how addictive meth and cocaine are? This girl's long gone. An intervention wouldn't even work. Her parents have to force her into rehab or she's going to get herself killed. It's that simple.
-
First off, I have a few questions; how long were you friends with this girl before you started asking her out? As a girl, I would like to be good friends with someone for a fair amount of time before they asked me out, to be sure they liked me for me and not just my looks or something like that.
See, be careful with this Leon. You definitely don't want to visit the friend zone for very long because it's there where you'll basically become one of her girlfriends and you'll never have a chance. Just don't come off so desperate and weird next time and you should be fine.
i think that anyonw who calls anime and manga otakus losers are just self-absorbed,crazy, good-for-nothing-worthless,insolent, preppy scondrells(and/or refs) that think only their crap is worth anything and they need to shove all their rude unwanted remarks far, far up their anal canal!
See, this is what I'm talking about. If an anime aficionado goes off like this in real life they're only opening themselves up to people who just want to get a rise out of them. And honestly, if I were making fun of you and you called me a scoundrel I would die laughing and you'd really never hear the end of it. A lot of teasing starts off as passing and good-natured. It's only when people become animated and over-react that an open invitation to keep at it is dealt.
-
Anime and manga are for dorks. But, so what? I play video games, which are just as strongly associated with dorkiness. My point is that almost everyone has a dorky interest or hobby. Look at the myspace fad and how mainstream that is. Isn't that the epitome of dorkiness? Don't be ashamed of your nerdy interest or make excuses about how "deep" anime is. Just be comfortable enough with yourself and what you like to accept, and even laugh at what other people think about it. Be cool enough to make fun of yourself and people won't bother you. However, if you become heated and try to explain the complexity of anime to naysayers, prepare to get teased. And rightfully so.
