I would like to congratulate you for creating such a great forum.

And I also think that these boards will someday be related to curing cancer. I've been using the forums since 2001 and I've not developed cancer yet. Coincidence? I think not. Thanks James and Adam! -
?Yep.?::: Ever wound up talking to someone who only says things like ?Yep? and ?Cool? or even ?Ok?? It makes you feel like you?re talking to no one in particular or what you?re saying is meaningless to them?and perhaps it is, depending on who you are. If you?re the King of the World, obviously somebody?s going to listen to you. If you?re some brain-cell-lacking shmuck who lives in his parents? basement playing Nickelodeon webgames all day, you may have a chance of striking up a decent chat with a toaster. If not, with the crumbs from the toaster. Back on the subject, though. It sometimes gets so bad with the Yeps, the Cools, and the OKs that even after you say something like ?My Grandmother passed away yesterday,? they won?t realize what they type and go into their habit of typing ?Cool.? Who says ?Cool? to a sweet old woman dying? Primitive people like this should skip the chair leg step and just be thrown into a busy street. But the police wouldn?t like that. They have some problem with the killing of people--even primitives.
I'm probably guilty of this to a certain extent. But, it's because I get bored with people rather easily and I'm usually tired when I log on. I never disregard anyone enough to answer glibly over something important though. Overall, this is pretty good. You go on a few tangents that break up the focus, but I admire your ability to remain witty and downright funny throughout this article. I'd done something similar before on myOtaku by using images, so that may interest you if you're able to dig through my not-so-robust archive. That's if the images are still up though. I'm not too sure.

I've now made some revisions suggested by Alex. I'd say that the poem has improved quite a bit overall. So, while I sift through all these countless replies, enjoy the new, revised edit. And nah, I'm not really obsessed with toast. Although when I was young, I was obsessed with French Toast.

Oh my! Oh my! Everything is toast! Oh my! Oh my! The sky is made of toast! Golden--and bright! It's toast! All right! Comes in slices of sunlight--Yes! I'll bite! That's right! I might! The sky has gone a-rye! Breakfast! Hooray! Foundation of the day! Okay! Oh my! Oh my! Everything is toast! Oh my! Oh my! The air is made of toast! So crisp! So fair! I do declare! Asleep! Awake! I smell it unaware! I do! I dare, Come bounding down the stair! Breakfast! Hooray! Foundation of the day! Okay! Oh my! Oh my! Everything is toast! Oh my! Oh my! The land is made of toast! No fuss--I crave crust! I must! Those nooks! Those crannies! Oh, how I lust for that delicious, flaky crust! A sluice of butter smoothes my trust! Pass me seconds! Pass me more! With my fork, I thrust down to its core! Breakfast! Hooray! Foundation of the day! I do not mean to boast, but I need to shout the wonders of the toast, so if I may, I'll propose a toast! Hooray! Okay!

I've lost some interest in this since they've announced that once again, there will be no voice acting but it's looking the part overall. I still think that the art style is somewhat bland (i.e., character models) and that the grass textures are simply awful--but generally it still looks good. And the game is meant to be seen in motion anyway, as any of you who have seen footage can attest to. Still, the fire monster and the water effects are super impressive even in these scans. Gaming MC vs. Doom guy (Not a serious post, its just for fun.)
Charles replied to silpheedpilot's topic in Noosphere
The Doom Marine would win. Master Chief is a bad ***, no doubt, but he's just fighting aliens whether he's alone or not. The Doom Marine is taking on Hell itself, and all of it's minions. Hell vs. some aliens? No contest. I'd want a man on my side who's been to Hell stared the Devil in the eyes and came back alive rather than some guy who just killed some rinky dinky aliens.[/FONT']
I'd rather have Master Chief because we could have good conversations together as opposed to the Doom marine who would answer me with mute silence. -
Well, there's also the fact that certain forums had been exhausted. The DragonBall Z forum, along with several other series specific anime forums, were revisiting the same discussions over and over again. So, rather than delete those forums, or leave them open to continue that boring cycle, they were archived so that people could search through the information and find what they're looking for.
Yo, I just picked this game up and it is pretty good. It ain't easy though. You really gotta use all of your skills to survive. I took 8 tries beating the first battle. Only after the battle did I learn I could change the difficulty... oops. The game is pretty sweet, and the voices and music are great. The battle system is sweetbu ttakes some real getting used to. So far the story is really good. I havent checked out the extras yet, but Ill get back to you on that. So... opinions?
I'll get this eventually. Probably when I'm finished with the semester. I'm a bit concerned with the length though. It's reported that the main quest can be finished in twenty-two hours. Although the game is supposed to have tremendous replay value, I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't unfold on an epic scale. The battle system supposedly leaves just a bit to be desired as well. It's functional, but nothing spectacular. So, that's another concern. Lastly, the landscapes look beautiful from the media I've seen, but I find the art style (pertaining to character design) bland and uninteresting. As I said, I'll take the dive at some point due to my love of the first Knights of the Old Republic--and I think I'll be satisfied. It's just that this one may have been overrated somewhat, like Knights of the Old Republic 2 was, so I'm not in a frenzy to play it or anything.
At the moment, in terms of launch games, I think Twisted Metal: Head-On and Wipeout Pure are my two main reasons to own a PSP. Of course, I can't afford one at the moment...and I want to purchase a DS first. But PSP is definitely on the list for me, especially as better games come out (and hopefully quality issues will be further resolved down the line).
When you do finally get a PSP, definitely make sure that Lumines is one of the games you pick up with it. Wipeout Pure is fantastic and I'm sure that Twisted Metal is okay too (once the wi-fi issues are resolved it will probably become even more popular), but Lumines is the one game that I keep coming back to. Without question, it's THE reason to own a PSP so far as current games are concerned. I'm terribly picky with puzzle titles and will only own an interest in two others: the original Tetris for GameBoy and Super Puzzle Fighter 2: Turbo. So the fact that I'm willing to endorse this game so enthusiastically means quite a bit.
The PSP has better graphics, but that is the only thing it has over DS. The music and movies thing is coming to the clamshell. In Japan, there is something called Play-Yan that will act as a music and movie player. The ds has better control, games, (Castlevania DS?) and will soon be wi-fi internet capable FREE.[/SIZE']
Nice trolling, fanboy. It's a bold declaration you're making there, regarding the DS having better control because you're speaking on entirely subjective grounds. You're in no way the authoritative voice on control preference. Or the quality of games for that matter. I could argue either way easily on both fronts. And I won't even mention your wi-fi comment. With Castlevania DS you're mentioning a game that you've not even played yet, which would really make your argument questionable if you even had one to begin with. I just don't understand why people can't enjoy both systems for what they have to offer and instead must draw unnecessary comparisons. It's easy to find faults with either. You could take easy shots at the PSP's battery life or durability. You could just as easily say that the DS line-up consists of little more than glamorized GBA ports and hasn't transcended the boundaries of being little more than a gimmick yet. Either way, you wouldn't be telling the whole truth and you'd be missing the best aspects both have to offer. Also, I'm not so sure why people are quick to point out alternatives to the PSP's media capabilities. It's a game machine. Those abilities are bonuses. It's a gaming machine that lets you listen to music and watch movies. No one is buying it just to watch movies or listen to music just like no one bought a PS2 just to watch their DVDs. And, satan665, all the levels from Twisted Metal: Head On aren't new. From what I've heard many are remade versions of Twisted Metal 2 levels.
I'd have even less interest in the Xbox version. Poorer graphics and no keyboard/mouse don't sound like something that would win me over.
I haven't gotten it yet, but supposedly the graphics hold up extremely well. Of course they can't stand up to a high-end PC, but they're supposedly impressive enough to the point where you're not missing anything. Because the majority of the game's environments are shrouded in darkness, I don't think that lower resolution textures would be a huge problem. Otherwise, the added co-op mode sounds really cool and it's good that they've trimmed down a lot of the boring areas from the PC version and moved some characters around. Are these changes enough to validate the stale gameplay? Probably not, but if the various impressions I've read are any indication of the game's overall quality, then I'd say that it's actually better than the PC version overall.
To be fair, the button sticking thing isn't something that happened within a week to the Japanese units. Maybe they fixed it, but who knows.
Yeah, I don't know if it's a problem that'll arise later. I've tested the button extensively with no problem. But, if it does happen to suffer later, I'll simply return it, seeing as how I opted to pay for the store warranty. And really, anyone who doesn't seek the security of an in-store warranty is a fool. Such warranties are really useful. I was able to exchange my GameBoy Advance SP almost a year after I bought it for button-related problems. So, I really encourage anyone to pursue such a security.
I'd be far more interested if I could afford the thing, but in the meantime I'm going to wait it out. The main game I want at this point, Lumines, apparently isn't quite as good as Meteos (which is from the same guy)... so I can't quite convince myself to drop $300 just yet. The other games thus far haven't really grabbed my attention, although Wipeout Pure does look good. I wasn't amazed by the DS at the time either, but I had the money at the time and it was more of an impulse purchase.
I know exactly what you mean. It's really a huge investment. I'd say it's worth owning both Lumines and Meteos if it turns out right. I've also been looking forward to Nintendogs. I'm not sure if it'll be a cool game or more of a novelty in the long-term but it has my interest. So when they release, I'll consider picking up a DS if I have the money. The PSP was just something I literally reserved at the last minute to spoil myself. It was kind of exciting. Overall it has more games on the horizon that interest me than DS does, which gave it the priority for now. Talkman, although technically not a game, looks like an astounding achievement that could prove useful. Mercury also looks extremely cool and original. I've heard good things about Untold Legends so that's a possibility when I get tired of what I have now. Darkstalkers will be fantastic if I can manage the controls and cumbersome load times. I usually don't change characters during arcade mode so that helps. Also, as you probably know by now, I really like sports games and that's another personal strength of the PSP. More than anything I'm interested in Ridge Racer but it's seemingly impossible to find due to shortages. I was the second one in line at launch and they didn't have any copies. I've heard it's sort of a compilation of tracks from every Ridge Racer and some original tracks which is too enticing to pass up.
Personally, I think I'd be satisfied with the 32 MB card. I have absolutely no interest in watching videos on the thing and I already have an MP3 player. As long as I can fit all my saves on it, I'd be happy.
The 32 MB card will more than suffice for that. It's just that, for me, I bought it primarily for a gaming machine but at the same time don't own an ipod or MP3 player since, obviously, I'm not a huge music fan. So, when the 1GB stick comes out it'll be more than enough for me to fit what I want onto it. The prices can be insane though. A 2GB stick is priced at $450 dollars. What the hell? lol
As for the screen, its durability does concern me. I take good care of my other handhelds, but they all seem to get scratched up at some point. If the PSP is as sensitive as it sounds, I don't know how I could possibly keep it in good shape. People were even saying they scratched the screen by wiping it with a cloth.
I bought a screen protector with my system but it was terrible. It did more harm than good. The truly good ones haven't launched yet. Right now I have small scratches on the screen (caused by the cloth no doubt) but they're not noticeable during gameplay. Still, it's annoying. I prefer to keep things extremely neat and in perfect condition.

I picked one up at launch. As it's well-documented, I never actually intended to hop aboard the PSP train but several factors swayed me. The biggest factor in determining my purchase was that I'm on the go a lot and rarely get to play my consoles. My GBA suited me fine, but I lost it. I was going to simply replace it or buy a DS just to play my GBA games with a better display but in the end, I just decided it would be best to hold off on picking up a DS. When the games worth playing arrive I'll be interested. Currently, however, the touch screen still hasn't been used in a way that transcends the category of "tacky gimmick" in my opinion. Since the PSP had a generally appealing launch line-up, it won me over in a totally spur-of-the-moment decision. I had a substantial amount of in-store credit that softened the blow of the price, but even that withstanding, the PSP would have been worth it to me. I've experienced no technical problems, such as a sticky square button or dead pixels. Also, the battery has never died on me or even come close. I've heard about the quality of the screen but until it's seen in person, it can't truly be appreciated for what it's worth. Something like Wipeout Pure just looks phenominal running on it. The image quality is so crisp, clear and vibrant that it's like playing near or PS2 quality games in high definition. You can't help but to just say "Wow." The sound output isn't nearly as impressive through the system's speakers. It's not terrible, but once you hear the audio through a pair of headphones you won't want to go back. The system doesn't feel as comfortable or natural in my hands as a GBA. It's not nearly as durable either. But, once you get used to it these problems become non-issues. Well, except for the durability problem. However, the carrying case and wrist strap should prevent anyone outside of a complete moron from dropping it incessantly. And, although it's not as compact as a GBA it still fits snugly into my pocket. So far I've picked up Lumines, Wipeout Pure, and THUG 2 (I never bought the PS2 version but find this type of game brilliant on the go). Lumines is my favorite and probably reason enough to own a PSP. It's that good. It's highly stylish, addictive, and has awesome music. In short, what people have been saying is true-- it's one of those games you think about even when you're not playing it. I just can't stress how fantastic Lumines really is. All in all, I'm VERY pleased with the PSP. If I was still able to play my consoles frequently I wouldn't have bothered (just so that I wouldn't waste too much time on video games). But, I'm surprised to find that many PSP games are quite original or the ports have been adapted for handheld gaming exceptionally well. Plus, its multimedia capabilities kick ***. I won't be buying any UMD movies for it because they're impractical (the quality is amazing though). However, I've put short video clips on the memory stick and copied music to it easily. I just can't wait until the 1-gig ones hit the shelves. Everyone who's seen my PSP has been very impressed. There's a tremendous sense of awe. People (a wide variety of people) immediately exclaim that they're going to buy one and just can't believe the quality of the games or video. It definitely has mainstream appeal and I can see it catching on big time. And really, I think it deserves it. It's one sexy device. Until Nintendo releases some quality DS games or its next Gameboy, it will more than suffice. Even then Nintendo's going to have a real fight on their hands I think, which is very exciting and good for us.

Triple H (c) v. Batista This is a difficult match to predict for several reasons. Originally the WWE planned to have Triple H wrestle Orton, with Orton taking the championship. So, with Batista's momentum, it would seem as if it would only be natural for the WWE to continue along with those plans and put the strap on him. However, it's Wrestlemania, and it's a title match involving Triple H. Do you remember Triple H's program with Booker T in which Booker was given huge momentum going into the match, as if he was going to be given a title run at last, only to lose and fade into obscurity immediately thereafter? Because Triple H and Batista are close friends I don't see Batista suffering quite as much but I'm not sure if the WWE are ready to commit to him on such a high level yet. Who would he work with? There are no top-level heels on Raw with the exception of Edge. Randy Orton seems like the logical choice but will be taking a leave of absence due to a shoulder injury following Wrestlemania. Unless the draft remedies the lack of heels on Raw, Batista wouldn't have any programs with potential to fall back on after his win. Still, I see Batista winning this one. Even having him lose and then win at Backlash would be a poor decision since his program with Triple H has been months in the making. It would grow stale by that point. I'd say that the WWE will capitalize on Batista's popularity and at least give him a short title run. Triple H seems intent on holding the title more than Ric Flair so it only seems logical that he wouldn't mind putting his friend over so that he can later add another title run to his resume'. JBL (c) v. John Cena A big part of me thinks that JBL should win and hold the title a bit longer. Just because Cena lost the US championship doesn't mean that he's going to win. That's not a valuable indicator. In fact, the WWE have used that swerve in the past. I haven't watched Smackdown in a while but I've heard that Cena's act has grown somewhat stale--that he has no edge. Although it's not entirely unlikely that Cena will win, I'd predict that JBL continues his reign and that Cena will get drafted to Raw where he belongs. If he does win, the WWE may follow their earlier plans and switch Batista and Cena to create new programs for each. Judging by the parallels they've created between the two recently, I'd say that if Cena wins, it's likely to happen. Trish (c) v. Christy I'd say Trish. But, it's not entirely out of the question for the WWE to have Lita help Christy pick up the win just to create an extended program between Trish and Christy if only because that will give them something to do in the failing women's division. Shawn Michaels vs. Kurt Angle Undeniably, this should be the best match of the night. It was prudent of the WWE to make this dream match before one of the two become crippled. It's Wrestlemania so Michaels is probably the safest bet. Sitll, there's the draft to consider and the WWE may choose to bring Angle over to Raw with some momentum since they're lacking in heels. Hopefully we don't see a classic match ruined by a cheap win that involves using the ropes to gain leverage for the pin. Randy Orton vs. The Undertaker Once again, it's Wrestlemania so The Undertaker is the safe bet here. And, as I mentioned above, Orton will be taking a leave of absence following the event. If you factor in how unhappy the company has been with his backstage behavior, then that's more of a reason to look for a 'Taker victory. You can't discount the fact that this could potentially be Undertaker's last Wrestlemania too. Still, I'm going to take the dark horse and pick Orton. The WWE will probably want to get him over as a heel so that he can have a program with Batista when he returns. Money in the Bank Ladder Match Edge will win if the WWE is going with Batista as champion following Wrestlemania and Jericho if Triple H is to win. Big Show vs. Akebono Akebono probably. I'll use this match as an opportunity to use the bathroom but I see Akebono winning since he's a huge star in Japan and a win for him is likely a part of their requirements for lending him to the WWE. It'll probably be super short too since they're afraid of him getting injured. And well, because if it's long, everyone will be put to sleep. Eddie Guerrero vs. Rey Mysterio I'll pick Rey Mysterio. The WWE will probably have Guerrero snap and turn heel as a result--if not at the PPV itself, then shortly thereafter. Regardless it will be a great match if given the proper time. It could even rival the HBK/Angle match. I can't belive that people are listing Piper and Austin as a match. It will be an interview segment in which Piper gets hit with a stunner. That's it. lol The Hogan/Hassan match would be awesome if it were to happen. Hassan would probably win though since there's talk of him potentially facing Austin in the future. Plus Hassan could use his win over Hogan in promos talking about how he defeated America's greatest hero.
It seems strange that the magazine is citing the game being on each system with a different character as the sole reason as to why it didn't advance the gameplay significantly. In fact, it just seems entirely ridiculous.
Yeah, I've always thought that Gamepro's brand of "journalism" was bad, but I had no idea it was this laughable. The quality of writing in the article is probably the equivalent to a poor post on a message board. Which, is why I'm surprised that they were able to secure such an exclusive story. It also makes me question the credibility of their claims of PS2 exclusivity here.
While I probably wouldn't mind voice acting in the Zelda series so long as it was done well, I think you're a bit off with this point. If you pay attention, Link still doesn't talk, even through text. I can't recall a single time in the series where he does, unless you count things like choosing yes/no options while people are talking.
Nope. I never said that Link talked. However, other characters such as Zelda and the king of Hyrule provide some verbal sparring with Ganon before and during the final battle. I really think that the series is moving in the direction of complex relationships too. Just look at the seperation of Link and his grandmother. Or his relationship with his sister. Even his relationship with Zelda was more complex in Wind Waker.

A new scan from Gamepro ( from the May issue, not the April one) has surfaced, which reveals some interesting, and unexpected information alongside some character art and screen shots. The biggest surprise (considering the sales of the GameCube version were the strongest) is that Soul Calibur 3 appears to be a Playstation 2 exclusive. If the game adopts the Tekken 5 engine it should still be technically impressive but I really can't see the point in limiting this to one console after the previous game's terrific marketing scheme. The ability to create a fighter is interesting, however, along with the author's claim that "Everyone knows that Soul Calibur 2 was a disappointment." lol
I think the confusion comes about when Charles implied that he didn't intend for the poem to have a double-meaning, when he must have. lol
Yeah, I feel that I worded that initial explanation to Mitch somewhat poorly or vaguely. It is indeed accurate to say that I didn't intend for the poem to have double-meaning. That's really the purpose of the last stanza--to specify concretely what the subject matter truly is. It leaves no question as to what we're talking about here. However, there is an intentional double-meaning in the language as James wonderfully points out in this post. So, that last post was great in that it proves that you can actually talk about a poem like this seriously and critically.
-
Having said all of that though, I don't think that voice should at all be a prerequesite or a requirement. Although it's possible for Mario to talk a lot, I'm happy enough for him to just make grunts and yelps and so on. As long as there is clarity and variety to the sound, I don't really care.
I agree with your post. However, this isn't an apt point of comparison. I can see why you made it and what point you're trying to illustrate. But, in all fairness, there's a line of seperation for prerequesites that exists between a Mario platformer and a Zelda role-playing/adventure game that is becoming more distinct as we delve into this point of discussion. An intricately woven story isn't necessary in a Mario game. Even with proper voice acting, it just wouldn't be very tolerable. I thought that Gex had a suitable voice, but its presence within that sort of game seemed out-of-place. Even current platformers, like the Jak series, had to completely be re-worked to make voice acting reasonable within the confines of the genre. Considering the thin storylines within Mario platforming titles and the lack of important interaction with other characters, it's just not a necessity for him to speak a lot. In Zelda, however, there's a heavy emphasis on storyline and communicating with people. Unlike the confrontations between Mario and Bowser, when Link confronts Ganon, there's often a lot of dialogue exchanged before the battle. There's supposed to be more emotional weight and characterization built up throughout the game. Of course, even without voice, the Zelda games have achieved this very well, but as more and more games adopt excellent voice acting to further their storytelling, and it becomes more obvious that Nintendo could do the same, that aspect of the Zelda series just seems antiquated. With Mario, I don't think it'll ever matter unless we're talking about the Mario RPG games, in which they too share the same problem.

I'm not so great that I don't need advice. No one is. We'd never improve with that philosophy. The best replies are the ones that help me improve my work. Drix offered a really good reply in my "Walking Shoes" thread for example that I really appreciated. Although that poem didn't garner as many replies as this one, there was a quality there that made it just as valuable. Although I love it when people tell me they've enjoyed what I've written and find it humorous (if it's the intended purpose), I'd still say that it's possible to go into this poem and have a complex line-by-line discussion. It's interesting how some readers only see cats when they go through this poem, and how others immediately draw other conclusions; it's neat to explore the reasons for that within each individual. The most beautiful thing about language is its versatility; it can be spun in so many different ways and say just as much about the reader as the writer upon interpretation.
I don't really see how it's any more "cinematic" than Wind Waker was. It looks different, that's all that can be judged from this video. I don't feel making it look less cartoony magically requires a vocal presence. I still don't really want one in general. The chance of them finding a fitting voice for anyone (not even including Link) seems really unlikely.
The camera angles and scope of the envionments within the shots seem more cinematic although it could just be because of the trailer. The scene where Link is running away from the spider instead of directly battling it is cinematic as are the scenes where he battles on horseback. Perhaps "epic" would be a better word than cinematic here but regardless I'm not willing to accept a flimsy excuse like a lack of talent to provide the voices. In this day and age, that's simply not the case any more. I'm sure there are fitting voice actors out there.
-
It looks exactly like the Nintendo 64 versions only updated with obvious technical advancements. The cat scene was a pleasant surprise though. Hopefully they've updated the presentation of the narrative as well and added voice-overs (I know, to everyone except Link) to fully bring all components of this game up to the cinematic standards they're trying to achieve.

I used to play the quiet game when I was young. The adults would tell us the object of the game was to see who could remain quiet for the longest. I think it could have been a trick.
