Name: Axel Vahn North Age: 37 Alliance: Evil Appearence: Axel's dual-colored eyes sparkle like green and blue jewels when they're not eclipsed behind a sexy pair of shades. His face is drawn, like that of a man who has made a long journey and maked by a pink scar, residing above his upper lip. Two locks of jet-black hair fall to his shoulders, the rest bunched in a small pony tail. A few characteristic strands of silver hair lie passively over his right eye. Small, chrome earrings dangle from both ears, displaying a military emblem. His teeth are tinted by a thin layer of yellow because of his tabacco addiction. Mysteriously, one lonely plate covers his left shoulder only, its encriptions alien to most. Other than that, his upper body is decorated with black spandex and light chest armor, his hands, cut-off gloves. His lower body is clothed with baggy, black pants, and musty combat boots. A rather large belt hangs from his waist, lazily. Personality: His voice is raspy, seemingly erupting from a volcano full of stones. Axel has served his time as a bounty hunter, body gaurd, drug dealer, and assasin. Currently, he serves as a mercenary. However, he's rarely trustworthy and quite blood thirsty, only out to satisfy his own twisted agenda. Weapons: Brass Knuckles, Excalibur, and sharp, metallic claws. Magic:: Dusk to Dawn: A small shiver runs up the victim's spine, followed by a flash of white light and the image of rose pedals falling. Shortly thereafer, they become completely paralyzed for a short time. Silver Damsel: Waving his mysterious sword, Axel brings up a mysterious mirage of a woman long passed to haunt his foes. Magic elemental: Black New Age. Bio: I pretty much covered what I wanted to with personality. I'm not being lazy, but I want to be mysterious and reveal things slowly. If that's a problem, I'll edit the post. Starting Point: wilderness.

I'm not really surprised that this thread hasn't gotten much feedback, considering how the game hasn't released for the PS2 yet. I haven't even picked it up for Xbox, with all the quality software being released. The game should be a good value, depending on how elaborate the enhancements are. I, like many others, felt a bit burned with MGS 2 when it released, so I'm a bit weary of buying an expansion of a year old game that just wasn't very good to begin with. The return of Meryl sounds intriguing though, pending it's not a brief guest appearance and really adds something to the storyline.

It's funny you should mention that, because we were originally going to do the assignment on McDonald's, but they built a Starbucks right within our campus, lol. So, that's the only thing influencing my work. Had they not built it, Joe Average might have clogged his arteries with some Micky D's.

But, yeah, I liked web better because it's more symbolic of the addictive nature of the place. Thanks for the comments everyone. ^^
Originally posted by Mystic's Knight Heh, Well CWB, whatever you want to say about not pm'ing James you know full well that all this fighting to keep the lounge was useless. And YES, it would be a member decided thing....The lounge was gona go regardless, I guess you didnt read me right, and instead rambled for an hour hehe.
Okay, now go back and try to read the post. It wasn't just directed towards you for one thing, and for another, it wasn't rambling. I was summarizing my argument and pointing out obviously overlooked issues. Also, as I said, if you (gasp) read my post, this thread isn't just about bringing down that section. It's also a matter of suggeting improvements. That's been said numerous times. Maybe you missed it or something. In that instance, this thread should be in the public. And I still believe that if better arguments were made, keeping the forum could have been seriously considered. Instead, most defend it as a SPAM forum. Also, I'm not "pissing" on Mnemolth, and I didn't laugh directly at him. I laugh at a particular issue, but I never said, "Haha Mnemolth, your points are hilarious." In fact, I believe I said I respect his opinion in my last post. I never dismissed his posts as rambling either. ;)

All right, this one is far from perfect, because I had to cram it down into two pages, double-spaced, so here goes nothing: They lured him into the seedy underbelly of drug trafficking. He was Mr. Joe Average, motivated by a desire to fulfill his own selfish dreams, dreams of gaining access to the ?in-crowd? and all the benefits that fell under their umbrella of acceptance. He knew of the risks involved, knew of the plant?s addictive nature. But, before long, he found himself in a dimly lit coven, sharing the company of flush-faced addicts. Turning a ten dollar bill between his fingers, folding it in the fashion of crude origami, he ultimately crumpled the thin material like tissue paper under the weight of his conscience. Reluctantly, Joe gave in and approached the pushers. They seemed eager to make a transaction. Clumsily, he fumbled with pronouncing the exotic names; his tongue coiled up like a snake, refusing to cooperate. Thankfully, they understood that it was his first time. One of the pushers twisted his mouth into a toothy smile, as Joe finally made his decision. ?Welcome to my web,? said the spider to the fly. He examined his purchase carefully, as if he were looking down the barrel of a microscope. It had been so easy to buy. When it finally passed through his lips, it was strong, almost bitter. But, it made him feel warm, comfortable. Joe quickly found himself indulging on what would become his newest vice. He felt like a new man, felt confidence sweep through his body. He made certain that the odor didn?t cling to his clothing. Popping a small pill, he had obtained from the supplier, he cupped a palm to his mouth and huffed. Perfect. They litter our streets, college campuses, and yes, even our book stores. Starbucks is everywhere. There?s probably one for every Joe Average in America--illegal immigrants included. So, what is it about a coffee joint that enables it to elbow and nudge its way into our very lifestyles? Could it be the abstract art plastered on their walls? Of course not. It has to be the mellow music, guitars strumming along with bad saxophone players wailing to a methodical drum beat. Perhaps the entire Starbucks phenomenon goes deeper still. The prospect of sipping a ridiculously expensive cup of gourmet coffee, while lounging in an oversized stuffed chair seems comforting to most, an escape from the urban bustle that accompanies everyday life. It?s a chance to just get away from it all and simply relax. All the excitement and intrigue of buying illegal drugs and getting stoned can be everyone?s to treasure, only without the life threatening side effects (aside from kidney erosion) and possibility of being thrown into prison with the boys on lockdown. Rest assured, like other drug dealers, Starbucks will take one?s money, and it will addict them to its product. Years from now, when we?re told that it?s good to hate coffee, because it makes us go blind and causes people to climb bell towers with an automatic weapon, we?ll tell our children how there was place, a place called Starbucks, that started it all.

I disagree with the notion that I should have simply pmed James regarding the subject, I disagree that this has become some sort of thread in which the big guy kicks around the little guy, and I wish to make it clear that neither I, nor other staff in this thread are being arrogant. I don't believe that members become any less ordinary as their titles change and I don't look down on anyone on the basis of registration date. To my knowledge, not many staff members do. Why do you think we have a suggestions forum in the first place? Everyone's feedback is appreciated and everyone's opinion is valued. That's why I have to frown at the view that only staff opinion matters. Sure, James has the final say, as he stated, but that doesn't mean that members both new and old, can't shape the boards. The Cowboy Beebop forum was added due to member request. I mean, even manual name changes went into affect because members desired it.
So when you look at the Newbie Lounge, and all you see is spam, I see something else. I see friendliness. I see enthusiasm. I see people trying to help their community and have a little fun while doing it. I see charm, the charm that comes from the silly and the ridiculous. I see people interacting with one another, and having a grand old time. And I see that as being perfectly in sync with the rules.
It's true that there is friendliness in the Newbie Lounge. But, the very qualities that you mentioned are apparent in other forums as well. I see friendliness on much of the boards. I see people trying to help the community. These boards are, in fact, filled with charm. That's why I stayed here. I'm only registered at this board, and one more. There was no Introduction forum when I registered, and I saw people interacting with one another, having a grand old time. I see it on OB now. As a matter of fact, I see interaction among members right now, in this very thread. There was no topic posted solely in Staff Forum about this issue. James openly asked for pubic member feedback regarding suggestions for new forums. Alas, I don't see true interaction in the Newbie Lounge. People type in programmed responses. I hate to put anyone on the spot, so I won't mention any names, but here are two separate posts, in two separate (but recent) threads from that forum:
EDIT - Okay, I've been a little moody lately. Changing the post. Welcome! *hands you a green bee* Obey the rules, don't spam, and PM me if you need help. Please enjoy your stay here!

EDIT - If you say that post, I apologise. I have been rather moody lately. Welcome! *hands you a green bee* Please obey the rules, and feel free to PM me if you need help. Remember, always have fun!
Look at that. How is that pure interaction? I feel that people can give new members a warm reception just by commenting on their posts in other forums, and showing them that their opinion matters. The satisfaction is much greater received when they see that they are being taken seriously in the community, and that their opinions are respected. They make friends among others by being themselves. No one is being themselves in Newbie Lounge by posting that nonsense. If they did that in their real lives, in public, they would be committed in an institution.
I find it sad that people fail to understand that being 'articulate' does not make you right, and being 'intelligent' is not everything. And for those looking back at me with daggers of irony in their eyes, they should be looking more closely at me, because they obviously have not looked at me close enough in order to have formulated the opinions of me that they have.
I don't quite understand what you mean. This thread was never created with lofty language, and poetic justice. Your post contains more of that than anything, lol. I cited specific faults in the forum, and delivered hard-hitting facts. I didn't use rhetoric or dance around the issue. Fact: The Newbie Lounge Generates Spam. It has fallen far behind other forums in terms of quality. Fact: The Newbie Lounge places a bad impression on new members. It influences poor posting habits. Fact: We learn nothing of the member in their first post, that can't be learned from their profile, signature or posting habits. Why do you think so many questions are formed in Otaku Lounge regarding real names, and locations? Yes, members are uncomfortable posting it initially. So, what's the point of the forum? They can post the same "Hi, I'm new" comment, at the start of their first post in any other forum. Fact: People are free to be themselves in other forums. I mean, why not? As stated, they are not being themselves in Newbie Lounge. Fact: These are recreational boards. All the forums are recreationally based. I know, that that sounds like a political ad, but, I can't outline it anymore clearly. I'm done justifying my reasoning. Everyone should understand it by now. If they disagree, then fine, I respect that. I was a member on this board for nine months before joining the staffing team. In that time, I posted numerous joke topics in Otaku Lounge. I even created a "Crazy White Boy's archive of Useless Crap-ola." So, just don't patronize me, by painting me out to be someone who's afraid to let loose. As I said, I won't ramble on any longer. The most I'll do is try to come up with reasonable suggestions.
-
:Cracks knuckles: I don't want to displease Cloricircus, so I'll make sure that I put plenty of effort into this post. I am Crazy White Boy version 2.0. It's hard to gather what people think of me, because I'm not really controversial. Mr. Average, that's me. That is, I'm a long postin', non cuss slingin', stylin' and profilin', non "G" usin' in the suffix kind of guy. But, astonished as I was, I actually appeared in quite a number of role-model threads. I'm all like, "Dude, I didn't think people noticed me." In the poetry/story section, people seem to like me though. They really read my selfishly long posts and provide me with great intellectual feedback, didn't even tease me over the narrative. O.o;; If I had to sum it up, people probably know me as the crazy avatar and signature guy. Or, as Shinobi would put it, the guy who weeds out in his sig. :drunk:
Originally posted by Semjaza Azazel There is zero reason for a test thread. Anytime you update your sig or avatar it affects all your posts. It's very existance would be pointless for that reason alone.
Well, also consider the fact, that you may preview posts to experiment with tags as well. So, that excuse doesn't sit well with me either. I don't see why people keep bringing up a useless Test forum when we're trying to get rid of another useless forum. How would it be solving anything? Hehe, anyway, I don't feel that MathGuy2 was very serious. He did, in fact, say that people can PM themselves, although that's not necessary either.
Originally posted by Desbreko As for ideas on things to replace the forum, should it be taken down, I have one that kind of combines the "My Otaku" idea, with a few of my own ideas. I'd put in an "Otaku Archive" forum, which could have the FAQ, rules, and stuff that would go in a My Otaku forum, and also have a sub-forum for the greatest threads and RPGs on OB. (They would be old, inactive threads, of course, which no one posts in anymore). That way, new members could come into the Otaku Archive forum, read the rules, FAQ, get info on various vB tags and such, and also take a look at examples of some of the best threads OB has to offer, which would serve as examples of high post quality and how to post intelligently, whereas the main part of the forum would tell what not to do, and how to do things. They'd get help on how to post, be shown what to post, and what not to post, all in one, concentrated area.
Sorry for the long quote, but it basically sums up what I meant, exactly by an archive forum. A lot of people talk about MeteoCity as being a great rpg. With an archive, it would be easy to point members, who are having difficulties creating good games, to that thread. Also, small things, such as an acceptable and unacceptable favorite topic could be combined and placed in that forum, with some slight editing, picking apart the various parts of the post, showing what is and isn't acceptable. The same could be done for other topics. It would just be so much easier actually pointing people towards examples. Plus, we can store old editions of Otaku Awards and examples of closed topics, or nostalgic threads. It would be sort of like an Otaku Attic, lol. I thought that that idea was only attractive in my twisted mind, so it's glad to see that someone else shares it.
-
I also feel that the "My Otaku" is a good idea, although it isn't quite as attactive as Otakat Lounge. ^^ The biggest strike against the Newbie Lounge, is very apparent when most of it's supporters are using it's spammy nature in their argument, lol. I don't really like being compared to a business man either. I've always tried to maintain some sense of humor in my posts, signatures and avatars. The funny aspect is, that most replies in Newbie Lounge are normal members stressing the rules instead of getting to know the individual better or posting follow-up questions. Forgive me if I'm being too serious for your tastes now, but I don't drench my posts in humor when I'm trying to accomplish something. The "My Otaku" forum could be very useful as an archive of sorts. There are so many possiblities that could impact the boards positively in putting it up. In fact, it could help clear confusion with things such as favorite topics or storing old events. I remember that there was talk of doing something like "Ask Otaku" on the boards before. So, it can still provide fun, but while doing so, it could actually help people.

I dislike both candidates in New Jersey's senate race. As I said in our political round table in class today, Frank Lautenberg, is merely a walking corpse, animated by the puppet strings of the Democratic party. The man is seventy-eight years old, and I greatly disapprove of him being elected as a representative, when he holds little in common with average, middle class people. On top of literally stealing a place on the ballot by replacing Torricelli five weeks after the deadline, he purposefully side stepped a televised debate until just last week. Why? Because he babbles incoherently. Doug Forrester, on the other hand, hasn't really revealed much about himself. He's a nobody. Instead of preaching his views and discussing issues, he spent much of his campaign bashing Torricelli, until he finally withdrew from the race. Since, I couldn't make up my mind, I didn't vote. I regret that decision though. Democracy is still very young, only truly being born in the 1960s. So, it's quite possible for it to die before I do. It's really important to just get out there and vote--even if it means doing a write-in.

Actually, Mitch, it's perfectly acceptable to discuss codes in the gaming forums. After all, they are here for a reason, lol. The decision of whether or not to utilize codes in a game is a personal choice. I don't necessarily agree with it, but we should respect those who do find games more enjoyable with cheats.

Okay, I expected arguments against this.
A place of refuge. A place that is just a little bit more lenient so you can go a little crazy. Boundaries? Of course there will be boundaries. But the Newbie Lounge is not like all the other forums, and the application of the 'rules' to it, need not be the same as to all the other forums.
Refuge from what? OtakuBoards is recreational in nature, that's what it's here for. Look at the forums. Otaku Lounge has topics about plushies, real names, virtual pets, visual impression, etc. Look at the description of the forum. "Take a seat, a warm cup of coffee and discuss off-topic stuff right here. Remember to keep to the rules." That sure sounds relaxed to me, and the second sentence manages to sum up nearly everyone's reoccurring response in Newbie Lounge. I feel that the other forums are more than lenient. Unless someone outright breaks the rules, there's little trouble to be had. It's obvious that there's plenty of room to "let your hair down." We have entire sections dedicated to anime, poetry, role-playing, media and gaming for crying out loud.
Poor quality posts can be a nuisance. And they can become more than an annoyance when they impact on good posts. But if they are contained within the Newbie Lounge, if the Newbie Lounge is monitored so that things don't get too out of hand, then it is a good place for members to be both friendly and silly at the same time.
Do you realize what you're saying? Restricting them to Newbie Lounge insinuates that it's acceptable, and encouraged for newbies to spam. Even when things don't get out of hand, there's little to be said. As I pointed out, a good many introductions are useless, and the responses aren't much better. Most of them merely say "Read the rules," followed by some nonsense. How is it going to look when a newbie sees someone with over five hundred posts, posting with horrible quality, and when the newbie follows suit, they're warned.
If there is just one place, just one lowsy place to post free to, to introduce oneself in as many words as one wants, or to discuss about "your favorite things", then would it be such a nuisance that anybody couldn't bare it?
Once again, this doesn't make much sense in the grand scheme of things. Favorite topics are allowed, if done with proper effort. Everyone is free to be themselves elsewhere too. I actually think that we learn more about people through their posts elsewhere and through which forums they frequent.
To my belief, the majority of the spammers are under 15, and if the rules to the behaving on the REST of the sections is made VERY clear, then why don't we dedicate a "playground" to them?
So, you're actually saying that this forum is a spam board. Like I said, the rest of the boards can be fun too. How hard is it to simply read the rules? If you want a spam board, just download an iKonboard or something. In the end, everyone should remember that all the forums aren't meant to be strictly professional and dry. Edit: But, the Newbie Lounge also isn't a place meant to house spamming. Anyhow, if the introductions forum was popular and effective, people wouldn't have to make topics asking real names, locations, etc. On top of that, newbies could easily introduce themselves in their signatures or biographies, interests, etc. I mean, that's what those profile features are there for.
-
Originally posted by Tigervx Wait, don't posts in the Newbie lounge not count O.o?
Yes, but that's not the issue. I believe that I mentioned that in my initial post. The point is, that the forum encourages poor post quality, is useless, and the welcomes are all too similar. It really serves no purpose. Also as mentioned, it just isn't up to par with the standards of the boards for the most part....
-
Actually, Zidane, it appeared that way at first. Spoiler After you defeat Cerebrus(sp?), Cloud admits that he had indeed succumbed to Hades' darkness and had used "dark powers" in an effort to "find someone." That brings me to say that Kingdom Hearts' scripting is very...sloppy, often contradicting itself sometimes. By the way Zidane, I loved how you used white text to hide your spoilers. That's a great method.

Initially, the Introduction forum appeared to be a splendid idea. The concept of giving newbies the opportunity to introduce themselves to the online community seems humble enough in theory. But, it's far from necessary. In fact, I'd say that it serves no legitimate purpose, other than impacting newbies in a negative way. OtakuBoards stresses the importance of post quality. Newbie Lounge brings down the quality of every forum by giving newbies the impression that SPAM is okay. Looking in the forum, I see many examples that justify my case in doing away with the forum. The introductions aren't effective I will provide some examples:
Yah...I'm [name removed for civil purposes]... I like Yugioh cards and some anime. So, hi everyone!
This introduction is erroneous. We learn little about the individual other than their immediate interests, which could have been clearly displayed when the member posted in those forums.
Al Stewart - Year Of The Cat On a morning from a Bogart movie In a country where they turn back time You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre Contemplating a crime She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running Like a watercolour in the rain Don't bother asking for explanations She'll just tell you that she came In the year of the cat She doesn't give you time for questions As she locks up your arm in hers And you follow 'till your sense of which direction Completely disappears By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls There's a hidden door she leads you to These days, she says, I feel my life Just like a river running through The year of the cat Well, she looks at you so cooly And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea She comes in incense and patchouli So you take her, to find what's waiting inside The year of the cat Well, morning comes and you're still with her And the bus and the tourists are gone And you've thrown away the choice and lost your ticket So you have to stay on But the drum-beat strains of the night remain In the rhythm of the new-born day You know sometimes you're bound to leave her But for now you're going to stay In the year of the cat The year of the cat
Here we see the inspiration for the members' name, but learn nothing more about the person. Members seem compelled to say "Follow the rules" in that forum, but they neglect to tell this individual that poetry belongs in the poetry forum, when they share another poem. Instead, we get this:
Cool.. WELCOME!!.. umm... *sees Lady A, but no sign of Sere* BEWARE THE NFP!!!!!! *runs*
Sure, there are exceptions, but my main point is that we can learn about an individual from their posts in other forums and the responses don't really demonstrate the quality that the forums desire. Which, brings me to: The Responses Are Lackluster Essentially, we see some friendliness exhibited in the forum, but we see the same people saying the same things: "Don't SPAM," and "don't break the rules." Duh. Following those instructions, is mindless banter.
I'm sure you'll find a nice, soft and cozy corner to settle yourself. Just look out for fuzzy animals. They tend to act dangerously around there

Oh, fresh meat! Don't bother understanding us. Everybody's either cannibal or insane.
As you can see, it is quite pointless on the whole. I realize that post count doesn't register, but the forum is just useless and drags down the high standards that other forums set here.
