I was really hoping for more. The games shown were mostly uninteresting, save for a few key titles. The controller stuff...well, this is why Nintendo said they wanted to wait before they revealed the Wii controller. Now it's clear for all to see, lol. Sony's added this very basic functionality (while simultaneously removing force feedback) at the last minute...I'm not sure how useful it's going to be. It's certainly a very pale imitation of what Nintendo are doing. In terms of the packages, I'm even disappointed there. The price is about as high as most were expecting but the "core package" comes without some absolutely critical features. It's not like they're even skipping on an add-on hard drive or something...they are really skipping critical components. So far it seems that PS3 is just all over the place. Sony is very confused at the moment, lol.

Okay, sorry for the absence lately. I'm going to post sign-ups within the next few days, so I hope that everyone has considered what kind of characters you might want to make. The sign-up thread will contain more information about how the new chapter system will work and how the RPG will begin. If you have any questions, again, you can use this thread to post 'em. Thanks for the encouragement, everyone!

There must be some difference between the NTSC and PAL versions, then. I'm now
at the point where you get turned into a Strogg...or just after it
and I haven't seen a single hint of slowdown at all. The game has run incredibly smoothly. I've really been enjoying it so far. Even the tank sections have been relatively good (though probably not as good as the tank-based areas in Halo 2). I must say though...I've been enjoying this game as much as I enjoyed Halo 2 initially, or probably more. Some aspects of this game almost reach Half-Life 2 quality, although not quite.
Not necessarily... many dial-up accounts use a system where they log into a different IP every time they dial on. I've experianced this elsewhere I've been IP banned but just reconnected and it was fine. Maybe my computer is just unique butI have about 3-4 different IP's that my computer cycles through. Not to mention IP maskers and changers.
Nevertheless, we can block anyone permanently if we want to. Not only is it easy to identify repeat offenders, but we don't have to block the entire IP. We can actually block a partial IP, which automatically blocks anyone on that "IP string". So even if you change IPs with reconnects, you can still be blocked automatically. There are many different ways we can control access to the site, at the end of the day. And if IP bans constantly fail, we have a nuclear option that never fails. :smirk:

Art Workin' Hard Or Hardly Workin' [WEBCOMIC]
James replied to Dragon Warrior's topic in Creative Works
You still have that randomness about you, DW...but I like this comic. This is probably one of the best things I've seen from you. The drawings are simple-but-effective and a lot of the content here actually does reflect the weird double-talk that goes on inside an office. It's surprisingly accurate from that perspective, lol. Great job. I hope to see more of this in future. -
Cloning dinosaurs as described in Jurassic Park is pretty much impossible. The DNA found within the mosquitos would be basically fossilized by the time it was extracted, thus making it useless. You may also remember that in the film itself, they commented that the DNA strands were not complete - they had to fuse the incomplete DNA strands with frog DNA, in order to produce a viable embryo. So, even under that theory, you aren't getting a "pure" species...you're basically getting a genetically-engineered psuedo-dinosaur.
Well yeah, I don't know how fast your download speed is, but for some reason it takes me anywhere from twenty to fourty-five minutes to download a demo. So, I always play them after going through the trouble. The demo was incredibly brief though. I think it contianed abridged (at least I hope so) versions of the very first two stages. I played it again as a refresher and the game moves at a blazing clip but whenever I turned it seemed jerky. The second level moves outdoors into desert trenches where there's a lot of action, so the frame rate took a noticable dive there. We're talking about a demo though; there have been several demos released on the marketplace with strange problems. I play in standard definition and don't see myself upgrading my television anytime soon so maybe when the price comes down I'll get on it. I'd have probably bought it out of impulse if March hadn't been so saturated with games I wanted.
I don't know if they changed it at all for the PAL version, but I haven't noticed a single hint of slowdown in Quake 4 at all. Perhaps you could rent it first or something? Come to think of it, I haven't seen slowdown in any Xbox 360 game I've played...although I've only really played three or four games so far. The interesting thing is, several reviews commented about slowdown...but I'm nearly halfway through Quake 4 and I haven't seen a single sign of it, even when there's a lot of action on the screen. In any case, it might be worth trying the rental just to see if it's any better. I almost feel that this is what Doom 3 should have been.
-
I downloaded the demo from the marketplace a while ago. I was initially interested in getting the game but most reviews complained about gamebreaking slowdown; they said the frame rate dives so low that the game becomes unplayable. Have you noticed anything at all like this?
Well, I have only been playing the game on 480p and I haven't had a hint of slowdown. The game is incredibly smooth on that resolution. However, I imagine that if you try to play the game on higher resolutions it might have problems. So I suppose it depends on your setup. Maybe 720p is the sweet spot. But I've really been enjoying it. Did you end up playing the demo?

I hadn't noticed a thread for this game here, so I thought I'd make one. I've been playing Quake 4 quite a lot recently and I've found it to be a pretty surprising game. I didn't really expect to like it, even after reading several reviews. But it's grown on me in a big way...and I'm not even at the "become a Strogg" point yet. There are a couple of things about Quake 4 that I find interesting, mostly due to history. For example, I have never really liked the Quake games in general. The first game bored me to tears. And I always felt that Quake II was really just a technology showcase more than anything else - the singleplayer, at least. The only Quake game I enjoyed at all was Quake 3: Arena, which I played fairly regularly for a little while. It seemed to ignore a forced single-player game and focus on the action, which was good, because it removed the superfluous stuff and provided a fairly solid action game. And then there's Doom 3, which I mention because Quake 4 uses the Doom 3 engine. I was highly disappointed by Doom 3. Yes, the graphics were a new step forward, but the gameplay was incredibly stale - nothing had changed or really been improved at all, from the original Doom. Quake 4 seems to be the best of both worlds in a sense - it uses the Doom 3 engine to good effect (by providing plenty of variety in environments, as well as lots of larger outdoor areas), while simultaneously providing a far more engaging gameplay experience than Doom 3. The story in Quake 4 isn't amazing, but the gameplay is significantly better than Doom 3; not only is the game more action-orientated, but it's also quite a lot more varied. While Quake 4 isn't the deepest of games, I almost feel that it's making up for the mistakes that Doom 3 made. And I'm kind of surprised to have seen a few negative reviews out there - regardless of any issues the game may have, the controls are incredibly tight and the progression is pretty damn good all the way through. I've never really felt annoyed or frustrated or bored while playing this game, which is certainly a good thing. So, who else here owns or has played Quake 4? And what is your impression of it? From what I've played, it's probably one of the better games in the early Xbox 360 lineup. It's certainly a great addition to the console's initial batch of games and I think it generally provides a good demonstration of what the system is capable of, both in terms of graphics as well as using the controller for first person shooters.

Considering some of the post quality I'm seeing in this thread, I think my answer is going to be obvious. ~_^ Basically, no, I don't want to include a non-Moderated area on OtakuBoards. I've seen it done to death everywhere else and it basically becomes an area full of spam. So it would attract members who want to post like that and they'd start posting everywhere else, which is something we just don't want. If you want a random off-topic forum where there are no rules at all, I think you'll probably find plenty of places on the Internet for that type of stuff. OtakuBoards is about quality and those who enjoy quality...and that isn't something I plan to change.

Politics. Warning--Very Controversial and Sensitive
James replied to Yukina123's topic in General Discussion
To respond to the original poster's comment...I think it's a little sad that we need movies to allow us to feel the true impact of an event. While I can understand that a movie can connect you to an event in ways that you otherwise couldn't experience (especially if you were not personally involved), it's also slightly disappointing that we need popular entertainment to allow us to feel anything for people involved in these situations. In addition, I think there's always the potential for an event to be "twisted" or misrepresented, because film makers often have a particular agenda (although I suppose I'm probably referring more to someone like Michael Moore than fictional movies in general). But having said that, it is good that a film has the power to make people wake up and realize how people may have felt when going through these things. Sometimes I will stop after watching a film and I will actually realize how little I may have understood a particular issue, or how a film has put that issue in a new light for me. So it's not entirely bad that films have such power, even though sometimes it's a little disappointing that we rely on the entertainment media so much. -
As I've said over at Tony's site, I think "Wii" is about on-par with Revolution. Think about it. Try to use "Revolution" in a sentence, describing an object. I've mentioned this countless times...but I think it's a point that nobody seems to realize. "Revolution" is an event, not an object - to describe an object that way in daily life sounds highly awkward. "Bring your Revolution to my house" - what? You're bringing the fall of the Berlin wall over in a backpack? To me it just makes little sense. Wii isn't much better in the sense that it sounds like "we", which certainly has more meaning and relevance than "Revolution", but I think it would still sound awkward in a sentence. However, the name is slowly growing on me...and I love the animation that Nintendo produced to introduce the name. While gamers will scoff at it, I think it's probably more appealing to non-gamers (particularly females), because it doesn't cater to the "teenage boy" mentality - it's a cute name with lighthearted and fun connotations. So I think it's a name that is, in many ways, a lot more universal than most may think. But it'll take time to get used to it. Hopefully it will end up like "Google" (which I thought sounded ludicrous when I first heard it), where it's one of those silly names that is so unique everyone knows what it is. Oh, and I thought this was cute: Wii Defined

I haven't yet seen your sign-up thread, but I have to say, this is one of the more unique ideas I've seen in recent times. I've been playing a game recently called Alpha Centauri, which actually deals with this very issue...what would happen if a group of humans landed on an alien planet and had to start over? There are lots of interesting implications there. So, good luck with the project. I just wanted to drop in and mention that I think it's a cool idea.
-
As we discussed on AIM, I think this is a good idea. I think you're on the right track here. I'm hoping that there isn't going to be a pirate element in this (at least not to a large extent), but you have already mentioned that it won't be an issue. I'd be interested to see what kind of revelations could be uncovered in a plot like this. As I said to you on AIM, I can imagine lots of great scenarios involving the Bermuda Triangle.

Well, you were referencing the religious significance (or lack thereof) and talking about divorce. So I was adding to that by pointing out a very small tidbit about marriage's history. If everyone was aware of their history, I doubt a lot of the current debates about marriage would be relevant at all.
-
Marriage isn't some romantically holy union with your spouse where the world turns gold and things end happily ever after. Approximately 50% of marriages end in a divorce. Therefore, I can say with certainty that abstaining until marriage, while it's good for some folks, isn't the infallible path to take on the matter. Marriage doesn't really mean you're going to stay together and be committed. I do see your point, though. I've had it hammered into my head for the last x-years of my life in Sex Ed.
As a little tidbit to this discussion, it's worth noting that marriage was not always a religious institution. In fact, organized religion adopted marriage as a part of religious tradition not so long ago. Originally, marriage didn't involve love or religion, it was simply an economic agreement between families (where a wife was "sold" to the husband and his family). So originally it was essentially a business deal between families, where a family member was literally sold and became the husband's property. This is why I find all of the talk of marriage's religious significant to be funny these days. I'm often surprised at how few people know the history of these things.
well.. its creepy cause they can ban you from the whole computer the whole computer wont be able to assess it ! but... if you went on anthoner computer couldnt you just make a new account ??? hmm im confused too...
That's true, but it starts to get to a point where it isn't worthwhile for the user. How many computers are you going to register on, especially if you were to have only one at your home? Using OB on a public computer isn't particularly comfortable, afterall. Moreover, these people are always easy to recognize. They make the same mistakes over and over again. So we can identify them anyway. We can also perform network-wide IP bans. I can not only ban your computer from here, but also from theOtaku/myOtaku and all of our other sites. So we have a pretty secure and wide-ranging admin system.

Well, all I can really say - partially because I am yet to see how other players will influence the plot - is that the role of the characters in the story will change dramatically as the RPG progresses. I would like this RPG to have a stronger focus on the cerebral edge, but there will certainly be plenty of action. However, it won't be an RPG full of fights and action without anything else - I definitely want to give each element its own time. My intention is also to have a diverse range of characters. I want participants to think carefully about what their characters' jobs and backgrounds were, before they awoke in Paris 2. I want that history to influence their personalities and the way they look at their situation. I can say one thing for sure. At the beginning, all players will be guests of West France. But an incident early in the story will change that pretty quickly.
So my point is that as this is seemingly going to be a huge game spanning various threads, some less active people are going to lose track no matter what. I'm glad to hear you'll give more freedom to the players within the chapters. What I really hate about the system is the "go there, do that, then come back" -structure I've seen in many of the games that use it. Sounds limited, huh? But enough of the ranting, I just wanted to get this out of my system. I know your game is going to rock (as I think Legionnaires does too), so I'm going to sign-up nevertheless. ;D
The thing is, I don't think chapters equate to many threads for one RPG or anything. I have no plans to produce something on the scale of The Legionnaires. The idea of chapters is to make the game easier for you to follow, so that other players cannot step on your toes as they would in a traditional RPG. But as I said, I'm going to attempt to create a more free-flowing system that combines the best of both worlds. It won't be easy, but I guess this RPG will be a big test for that kind of stuff. ^_^
-
I am pretty excited about this. I remember the original RPGs, although I didn't participate much. (I think there were three, and I was a part of one for a while... but I couldn't figure out where it was going, so I eventually faded out.) The great thing about "advanced" RPGS these days is that there's much more direction. (Not that Meteo City didn't have direction... I just couldn't figure out where my character fit into it.) I could see myself participating in this.
What you're saying there is very much part of what I am about to say to Sandy regarding the chapter system. Far from being restrictive, it actually provides a solid structure that leaves plenty of leeway for players. So we get the best of both worlds - we get a system where everyone knows how they fit in and what the general flow of the story is, but they also have enough freedom to influence the story and develop multiple threads to the overall plot. Anyway, I'm happy to see that you're interested, Sara. You're welcome to sign-up when the Inn thread goes up.
While I do think this sounds like an uberpwn idea (and will pounce on it as soon as it's in the Inn), the main reason I am posting is to comment on the fact that the "Ministry of Arts, Religion and Tourism"...the juxtaposition amuses me for some absurd reason.
~_^
Delicious! I would never have had known if it weren't for Sara mentioning it in her blog. I just had my midsemester exams yesterday so I've been out of the loop for a while now. This new goodness that you've forged in the fiery furnace of fantastic fiction fills me with happy thoughts! I'm actually buzzing through various character ideas in my head right now. The whole nameless past/altered memories/coma thing has got my character cortex clicking over. I'll definitely be dropping you a line once the sign ups are up. I'll have to ask of you what the plotparameters are, I want to keep my imagination inside a safe, workable, box here.. I'm certain that, once you put a link up in your blog, that every oldie around will come sniffing around. Nothing like vintage roleplay to get the nostalgia pumping through the veins ^_^ *holds breath with anticipation*
I was going to mention it on myOtaku but I haven't been here since Thursday unfortunately. I am hoping that I can find some way to establish basic plot parameters in the sign-up thread. Although finding the right balance between an open and closed system is proving difficult. But we'll see how it goes. I'm glad that you're interested, though. It'll be great to see some older members join in. ^_^
It seems like you have a whole legion of people eagerly waiting for the sign-up to commence. How big is this game going to be? Meaning, how many people are you going to let in? And I seriously hope this isn't divided into chapters, because in those type of games it's pretty much predetermined what is going to happen in the game, who gets to interact with whom, and all in all the creator of the game dictates everything. Or that's how I see them.
The number of people hasn't been decided yet. But I can say one thing for sure...the scope for this RPG is very wide. If there are people who don't get in with this RPG, those people may find that they can participate elsewhere. It really depends how well the RPG does, I suppose. In terms of chapters...I know you hate them, but I am convinced that they are the best system we have at the moment. As I mentioned to Sara, they give us the best of both worlds - some kind of basic structure to follow, while still allowing fundamental freedoms to the writers. Of course, some chapter systems can be more restrictive than others, but in general I think chapters allow us to avoid some of the biggest pitfalls that we have had in RPGs before. Imagine that you're writing a long post and someone else posts just as you do...if their post appears first, it makes yours totally redundant (especially if your character is in the same situation as theirs). That is a huge problem. The other problem is when you have ten people post in a couple of days or something - if you are gone for even a moment, you suddenly have to read through a million posts to understand what's going on. It gets confusing, nobody knows what they're doing or where they are...and the RPG invariably unravels. So I can say that this RPG will have some kind of structure. I have been thinking about ways to create a more free-flowing chapter system...one that provides more freedom than previous systems but still keeps us in line. This is partly why I'm creating the Revelation and Artifact areas - they will contain bullet-point lists of important events that will keep people up to date on the general flow of the RPG.
I think I love you... Part of me knew that though, a couple seconds after I posted last time and I started comtenplating ideas about this thing. I remember saying, " awww, it would have been a cool plot twist if we could play as hybrids" Even though I was off by just a little I knew it, Ha!...Mind link. Yet rather go on with so many questions about what all that stuff could mean. Why do you continue to tease us with all of these hints into the Rp? Can you atleast tell us when it will be in the inn, your killing me here.
You suspected correctly! Of course, there's a lot more to it. Like The Da Vinci Code, the Mona Lisa will also play a role in this story...she shall probably be one of the most important artifacts in the entire RPG. You'll soon see an ad I'm putting in Nomura's OB newspaper for this RPG. Should be interesting. Basically all I'm wanting to do is answer some questions and see who's interested. This thread will remain open while the RPG runs, so that I can add revelations and artifacts as we go. As I mentioned, players themselves will be able to suggest these for official addition. Some answers will only be known to me as we progress though...I am trying to leave enough room for players to influence the RPG significantly.
That's our Jeh; always with just the thing to freshen up the Arena a little. I'm also intrigued by the whole hybrid thing (although I am a bit saddened by the fat that it appears players can't be a hybrid themselves. But that's the furry-fan in me protesting, lol.) I'm already forming guesses about plot twists regarding them, but I suppose I'll have to wait and see how it all turns out in the end. I'll definately be looking for the sign-up thread once it goes live. Kudos, Jehness. ^_~
:catgirl: Funnily enough, all players will be hybrids. ~_^

Cool, nice to see you. ^_^ As you guys can see, I've added another box to the first post in this thread. It contains two subsections titled "Revelations" and "Artefacts" (apparently that word can be spelled with either an "i" or an "e" - go figure). These two areas will be added to as the RPG progresses. All of those who participate will be eligible to add items to that list, as well...so it won't just be me who nominates things to go there. Should be interesting. And where's Liam? I'm wanting to see what he thinks of this idea! I'm going to have to get a loudspeaker and call all oldies. ~_^

I haven't seen Big O, so I can't really comment on that. My influences for this RPG are the original (RicoTranzrig's "Hybrid Vigor" and "Meteo City" RPGs), as well as 1984 and The Da Vinci Code. Those three sources are what I started with, although I built on that quite significantly. Anyway, I'm glad that you're interested. In addition to that theme song, I'm also intending to include other types of music in the RPG - perhaps some classical music too. I like various classical pieces and I never hear them being used in RPGs on OtakuBoards. And in general some settings in this RPG will be ripe for it, I think. I'm thinking of putting an ad in my signature for members who are fluent in French, as I think I'm going to need that help. I can do it without a translator, but I'm not going to be able to get the grammar right on my own. So if you know anyone who could help with that, please let me know! ^_^
It sure sounds intriguing, I'm just trying to figure out who the ones receiving the message are. :/ Time-travelers? Or just people who were put into a coma by an unknown party? Well, I guess the answer lies in the actual game. ;D
I guess the obvious message is that the ones receiving the message are the RPG participants, heheh. But yes, the real answer lies in the RPG itself. I am not certain when it will be revealed, but it's one of the cornerstones of the plot I suppose.
It's good to have that mystery included to this game, otherwise it would be just an average post-apocalyptic humankind vs. evil mutants -RPG which in my personal experience seem to die early because of a lack of any further plot (just like all those angels vs. demons -games).
Well, I am trying to allow some leeway for participants to come up with their own threads to the plot. However, the overall plot (the overall "world", so to speak) is something that I've already planned out to some degree. Some details may change as we go, but generally I think the fundamentals will remain. Generally I want to surprise players with continual revelations as this RPG progresses. The key is to do that without making it too complicated or unplayable, but I'm willing to give it a go. ~_^
Well that introduction certainly leaves you wondering where you would fit in. I would assume that based on what you have written that the characters pre-date the third world war. That their mass exodus happened before the problems and eventual war with the hybrids. And then for whatever reason they either fell into a coma or were deliberately put into one for unknown reasons. Though I could be completely off. Still it gets you thinking about what is truly going on. I definitely see some plot twists lurking in that introduction. I?ll check out the sign-up when you post it as well.
You're definitely getting close with your explanation there, although obviously the reason for the coma and what happens beyond that are buried deeper within the story. All players will be given some basic information about this before we start, so that they have some additional insight. Hopefully I can provide that insight without spoiling the bigger key points in the story, anyway.
This whole thing seems to have a very George Orwell's "1984" feel to it. Just with animal people. Nice twist on that concept. The only other comparison I could make to this would be like, V For Vendetta meets the Bloody Roar video games. The story has a very 'paranoid' feeling. Paranoia pressed onto the people by the government to fear the Hybrids, and the paranoia of living under a totalitarian government. Real good stuff. I look forward to the sign ups. I hope I get in on this, looks really amazing.
This RPG has a lot in common with 1984, although I do not intend for it to be as oppressive. And unlike V for Vendetta, the government of West France is more left-centric than conservative (but again, that's closer to to 1984 I guess). Also, in 1984, Winston never left Airstrip One. In this RPG (depending on the pace), the participants will discover the world outside West France. I imagine that world will be very different to what they expect.
Oh ho? Could we have a little bit of a biased opinion in this already? Do I smell a plot twist in the making?
You never know. ~_^
Needless to say I will be most intrested when you post up this rp...it sounds marvelous. Yet when you ment that the hybrids were people spiced together with human and animal Genes. Its not going to be just like talking cat people, horse people and the like. but people who can be more human and have a slight animal trait. Or be more animal with a sligh human trait. Thats the only part that kinda confused me. besides that it looks good. I 'll be checking on it in the Inn.
Yes, you are right about that. This is something I was going to explain in the sign-up thread. Basically, my interpretation of hybrids is different to Rico's interpretation in his original RPG. In this story, hybrids look identical to human beings - but due to genetic engineering, they posess particular unusual physical traits. I'm sure you could pick a hybrid if you were really looking for one, though. ~_^ Also, as a side-note, if anyone is interested, I've uploaded the theme music for this RPG here: Angels & Men (Hybrid Vigor Theme) That'll be put in the RPG thread too, I imagine. And hopefully you can see the train station image more clearly now, as I've brightened it and changed the contrast. You may see a graffiti symbol on the train station wall. Oh, by the way...does anyone here speak French? Having some linguistic help would be really useful for this RPG. ^_^; Please PM me if you'd like to help with language issues!
