But I don't buy half eaten food or used clothing for full[/i'] price (or at all in the case of the food lol). I really don't think I should be stuck paying full price for a book that's been passed through the hands of a bunch of greasy manga fans that are too cheap to buy the same issues they apparently have no problem reading through in their entirety at the shop.
I agree with this. One of my pet peeves, is if I go to buy something (a DVD, a magazine, a CD or whatever) and the packaging is slightly different/damaged as a result of someone fiddling with it. One of the great things about buying a book/manga/comic is that when you first open it, it's very fresh and crisp. Having dog ears or something like that is really unacceptable, for me at least (and obviously for others too). You could go through the mangas at the back, but why should you have to?

Art Rate the Sig and avatar of the member above you.
James replied to Burori's topic in Creative Works
Avatar: I'm not sure if this character is from a particular series, but I quite like the avatar itself. Nice use of colour with a great facial expression. Is this a piece of fan art? It somehow has a fan art look to it, although it may easily be official. I don't know where it's from, in any case. Banner: Very funny banner. Hehe I like the image itself, I only really have two concerns. One is that there is no border; normally I don't care much about borders, but somehow on this image, the lack of a border stands out to me. Also, I'm not sure if this image was resized or something, but the aspect ratio seems a little off (as in, it looks a bit vertically squashed, or horizontally stretched). Adjusting the aspect ratio and adding a border would significantly improve it, in my view (which goes to show that you only need to do really minor stuff to make the most of your banner). I don't really like numerical ratings with this type of stuff, so I'll avoid giving one. -

Regarding the rock salt thing...I think we have to remember two things. 1) Budd knew that Beatrix was coming. And 2, he had obviously been prepared for that -- presumably he hired the guy who was digging the grave for her. Or at the very least, the guy who dug the grave was a friend or had some interest in doing it. So, in my view, the use of the rock salt was to ensure that she didn't die immediately. He wanted to stop her, sure; the rock salt definitely did that. But he didn't want to outright kill her. Thus the whole live burial thing. The only choice he really gave her was the torch versus the mace. Although the torch could be considered an act of mercy, the fact remains that he's still burying her alive. So I don't believe that the use of the rock salt alone was intended to torture her without killing her. It was used simply to stop her in her tracks, to allow for the burial to take place.
Regarding Pai Mei...I think he was cool for one major reason; he was the stereotypical tough kung fu instructor. Even his look (which is very 70's) really underlines that. There are quite a few old kung fu films out there, which feature a similar type of character. I'd heard that Tarantino wanted to play Pai Mei...but I'm glad he didn't, honestly. Gordon Liu was perfect for the role.

Haven't you played with an EyeToy? It's...kinda cool, but more a novelty than anything else, I think. I played one game where you have to fight with an on-screen character. And as you punch in mid-air, you actually hit the on-screen character. It's pretty interesting, but I don't think I could stand to play it for more than ten minutes. I would say that EyeToy is more something that younger kids will enjoy. But I can't imagine adults getting hours of fun out of it (unless Sony starts making porn-related games, which I strongly doubt).

Name: Boo Approximate Age: 10 years Picture: (My various stages in life...and to think that MJ gets bigger discounts than I do). Personality/Background: I'm a shy soul and I usually keep my head down and work hard. I remember my very first job, just over ten years ago. That was Super Mario Bros. 3. I was just out of college and I had managed to reject the various temptations of the new 16-bit world. Although I wanted to become a video game star, I was a little to fearful of cameras (and the gaming public) to take on that role. Actually, come to think of it...I was afraid of one thing more than anything else. I didn't like to be looked at. The problem got so bad that, during my scenes with Mario, I was unable to avoid blushing... "Okay, places everyone." "Does my moustache okay?" "Yes, yes, it's fine. Where are the Goombas? Agh, guys, you are late...again." "Sorry boss, we got lost at trailer four." "And where are your wings?" "Wings?" "Yes! You're supposed to be Para-Goombas!" "Darn it! I told you we were forgetting something, Goomba 1." "Huh?" "Oh, forget it...let's just get into position." "Alright, now, Boo...when Mario runs toward you, he's going to jump on your head and squash you. You've gone through the training, so you should be comfortable with this." "Sure, boss. I can do it..." "Okay...action!" "Woo! ...Ahh!" CRRAASH!! "Ugh...what happened?" "He was supposed to float right there!" "I...I couldn't..." "What do you mean, you couldn't? How hard is it to float around in circles?" "B-but...he was looking at me! I couldn't help covering my eyes, it was a natural reaction...I'm sorry..." Yes...embarassing memories. But as it turns out, my shyness soon became an endearing trait. I starred in a number of video games over the years -- it seems that kids couldn't get enough of me. My crowning achievement came when I was able to star alongside Luigi in Luigi's Mansion. Between you and me, there really weren't fifty ghosts...just me. But we had lots of stunt doubles and latex and stuff, you see. Amazing, isn't it? I'm a hard worker and apart from my shyness...I do tend to feel a little aggressive when people turn their backs on me. I guess it's kinda a reflex action, what can I say? But it's out of my system now. Skills/Qualifications: I am capable of floating and moving through walls. This could be really useful when it comes to reaching those difficult places on plumbing jobs. Yeah, I think I can speak for everyone when I say that My Persona was a very well written chapter. Seeing Persona's development as a character actually makes him a lot more frightening in my mind. When I think about previous RPGs that I've been in - ones without a chapter system - I realize that there is rarely a great opportunity to actually stop for a moment and delve into a character's past. You can obviously write a post with a flashback and stuff...and that's what a lot of people do. But segmenting everything seems to make it a lot clearer, at least, in my mind. In terms of getting the RPG moving forward...I'm actually starting to think forward a bit more myself. As in, I'm starting to layout some chapter ideas earlier than usual and I'm also starting to write certain sections a bit earlier as well. I was considering an idea where I actually use this thread to post two chapters. As in, the current chapter and the next chapter. This way, the writers involved can begin drafting ideas and stuff for the upcoming chapter, well before it arrives. This is a bit difficult in the case of the current chapter though, because of the sequential posting. I mean, you could forseeably write a whole post that becomes irrelevant because the post before yours contradicts it. In that sense, it's really tough -- and in that sense, I prefer to keep things more traditional, by allowing people to write the post after they've seen what the previous post contains. Also, just as a footnote for the current chapter...you guys don't have to write large posts in this chapter if you don't want to. Considering the amount of people posting, it's only necessary to make each post a "segment" or section of the overall chapter. Of course, I want you to include what you feel you must. But please don't feel that you need to write something enormous just to keep the quality up or something. I'm really happy with everything so far and above all else, I want it to be fun for you. ^_^

I feel like I have answered this question many times before, but I might as well have another go. ~_^ I personally find it really difficult to choose a "favourite" Final Fantasy title. Looking back, I'm not even sure which versions I've played. I've played the original and I think I played IV...but I tend to get pretty confused about the way the naming/numbers break down. There are a few important factors with the whole series though, I think. I tend to find that people have a sense of nostalgia about their first Final Fantasy -- whether it's a pre-VII title or a post-VII title (or in most cases, VII itself). But looking back over the series, I can honestly say that I've enjoyed every single one of the games I've played, on some level. In regard to the PSX versions, I enjoyed FFVII for so many reasons -- its strong story, great characters, moody and emotional atmosphere and strong battle system. I enjoyed VIII primarily as a result of its story, I think. It wasn't particularly a groundbreaking story, but VIII had a unique atmosphere that I still enjoy. The battle system was okay, but I was let down by it. It was somewhat disappointing - Junctioning was needlessly complex and frustrating at times. In my opinion, IX was the biggest letdown, for one major reason -- the story was awful. IX had many great ingredients. It had a beautiful art design, it had a strong soundtrack and it had cool and unique characters (Quina Quen is still an enigma to me ~_^). But the story was so predictable. The whole Garland/Kuja thing was like something you'd find in a "Famous RPG Cliches" book. So that disappointed me. Otherwise, I enjoyed IX; the battle system seemed like a more refined version of what VII had. Then there was X. X was gorgeous and it has my favourite RPG battle system, at least, from what I've played of RPGs in general. I really enjoyed it. I'm almost disappointed to hear that they're changing it in future. I say "almost", because the replacement seems pretty interesting. But at the same time, I really did not get into the story. It just seemed very flat and uninteresting to me. Some of the puzzles annoyed me (those sphere puzzles -- you know the ones -- I thought they were the most annoying part of the game). I didn't find them fun on any level and to me, it was a case of saying "phew, now that's over, I can actually have fun again." Games just shouldn't be like that. lol And then there's the pretty lousy voice acting and the kinda-hard-to-believe love story. I just couldn't connect with X's characters like I could with the characters in previous games (especially VII). I can't comment on XI, as I haven't played it...I can only say that I probably wouldn't be too interested in it, based on all the comments I have read. And I have yet to play X-2. Overall, it's very hard for me to decide. I enjoyed all of the Final Fantasy games I've played. Final Fantasy is often criticized for being too stagnant and so on...but really, if you throw away those criticisms and just sit and play it, I think you can come away feeling very satisfied with your experience. I'm sure there are better RPGs out there (I know I've definitely played plenty of games that seriously challenge Final Fantasy), but by the same token, there is something truly unique about Final Fantasy. You know you're playing a FF game, in the same way that you know you're playing Mario or Zelda. And I think that's probably a good thing. If I really had to choose, I'd probably go for Final Fantasy VII. It's easy, given the passage of time, to dismiss that game. But I think it's probably possible to do that with Super Mario 64 as well -- a game which had a tremendous impact during the time of its launch. While I wouldn't say that VII is the RPG of all RPGs...it's certainly one of the biggest titles in the genre and for good reason.

Yup, I've added a few more colours up there now...right now there are ten colours. So, presuming that ten people are ultimately accepted, we should be able to get a colour for everyone. I can also make more colours in future, so that's always an option.

Okay, I've completed the post backgrounds/HTML for this thing. Simply save/open it, copy the HTML and paste it into the post...then you're set. However, if you want to change text colour or post background colour, you'll have to do the following. First, visit this page: www.killing-bill.com/pbi You can see a list of the colours there. Click on the one you want just to see how it looks and stuff. Then, in the HTML, simply change the image filename to the one that you want (ie: substitute "pbi_yellow.jpg" for pbi_grey.jpg". After that, you're going to need to change the font colour to suit the background. You can do this with HTML (#FFFFFF is white, #000000 is black -- I imagine that these will be the primary colours to use for text). You can also use vB code within the table, should you feel more comfortable with it. So that's about it, really. Oh, and...remember to switch to the standard or enhanced post editor -- but not the WYSIWYG editor. The WYSIWYG editor will totally kill the HTML in your posts, because of the way it interprets spacing and stuff. If you have any questions, you can use this thread to ask. ^_^
Thanks for responding, James. ^_^ Now, by "cut" I assume you mean edited for television. When a cartoon or video game is banned, does that mean banned from TV and possibly brick-and-mortar stores, or banned from the country altogether? Would importing the show in question (from, say, America or the United Kingdom) be illegal?
When I say "cut", I mean that an anime is "killed off" or removed from the air. I might have missed the boat on what was being said originally, but I thought that this is what had been mentioned. So I think that may help to clarify some of the things I said earlier. Heh In terms of banning, generally speaking this means that the product is banned from the country entirely. If you import it...I'm not certain if that is legal or not. To my knowledge, if something is banned, this means that it cannot be classified under the ratings systems (ie: it's too violent/sexual/etc to carry even an R-rating). In this case, businesses are not allowed to sell the unclassified product in the country. But I'm sure you probably can privately import it. I'm really not certain about that though.

Desbreko, I imagine that GBA games would be fine. When Zidargh and I talked about this idea, we both seemed to feel that 2D characters would be necessary. So anything that is 8-bit, 16-bit is fine. Obviously you'd class GBA games in the same category as a result of the sprite-based graphics that we're kinda going for. And I think, based on our discussion, we wouldn't want to inject characters like, say, Tommy Vercetti from GTA. The main reason was because there are too many questions about that. I mean, would Tommy swear at Mario or something? How would Mario react? It just kinda makes no sense at all to combine them. lol So yeah, I hope that helps in terms of deciding on your character. Hopefully I'll have the post background work done soon. It may be possible to make varying colours and stuff too. We'll see how that goes.

I understand that Australia and New Zealand are not the same, but I think that some similarities can be drawn on this issue. I think you'll find that in many cases, New Zealand gets ignored simply because it can't support a vibrant anime industry. I mean, even in the United States - a country with a huge population - there are some products that just aren't considered, because the potential market is just too small. Anime is a niche product, there's no question about that. In Australia, we have access to a wide array of anime and I think there are a few reasons for that. In Melbourne especially, there are multitudes of anime stores. There's one store that comes to mind (Minotaur, in the inner city, if you're ever visiting), which contains wall upon wall of anime DVDs. However, our population is a lot smaller than the United States. So the only way that many of these distribution centers survive (and choose to import/produce so much material) must be because the actual market (per capita) is larger. I'm getting off track a bit there though. There's one overriding point that I want to drive home. Australia has a population of just over 20 million nationally. Melbourne's population is about 3.2 million or something. New Zealand's entire national population is about the same as Melbourne. Given that situation, you can't really expect that there is an enormous anime industry in the country. There just isn't the population to support it. I would say that many companies might be cutting programs not because of ratings issues or violence concerns, but because they aren't getting enough of a return on their investment. I'm not saying that this is definitely the case, but I think it's a major consideration in this overall discussion. In other countries, some distributors possibly feel that they can take more of a risk, because there is a larger base of people to draw from; a larger market. It's something to consider.

Well, as you know, I'm very interested in this idea. We've had several discussions about it on AIM and I'm behind it all the way. I love the idea of a Paper Mario-esque RPG (2D characters in 3D worlds), as I think it could raise a lot of cool situations and funny moments. Also, the idea of throwing together a few 8/16-bit characters into their own business is just too awesome to pass up. I can imagine them going on some crazy jobs -- and I can imagine the competition being hilarious. Sounds like a truly fun, light-hearted and colourful RPG to me. Just what I'm interested in right now. I'm behind it 100%.
Your main source of alarm seems to be a news show. The media absolutely loves the whole "[insert form of entertainment here] makes killers out of children" shtick. Simply because they ran a feature on violent cartoons doesn't mean the actual government will get involved. Has NZ's current administration taken action against video games, anime, or whatnot in the past? Have they offered any official indication that they're seriously considering banning certain cartoons? What exactly would a ban constitute, anyway? I'd still appreciate more clarification.
New Zealand does have a history of banning certain materials (including video games). Australia is the same way, although it's kind of odd that both countries ban different things. lol Having said that, the problem can and is overstated at times. In the case of Australia (just for a moment), people get this idea that because maybe one game is banned within five years, that Australia is some police state or something. The truth is, Australia is actually more liberal with its media content laws than the United States. I'd wager that New Zealand is similar. However, there are some areas where inappropriate laws exist. To be more clear and to give you an example, in Australia, we have no R-rating for video games. This means that if a game deserves an R-rating, it will either be modified to suit a lower rating (M15+), or it will be banned outright, because it doesn't fit within OFCL classifications. I would say that New Zealand is similar, at least in the sense that their classification systems aren't always capable of dealing with certain types of media. Granted, banning something like Yu-Gi-Oh (which is basically a children's cartoon) on the grounds that it is "violent" is utterly absurd. In that case, we might as well ban X-Men and Superman as well. In my estimation, there are two important distinctions to make here. 1) A show being "cut" is different from a show being "banned". Shows are cut for many different reasons -- not necessarily because someone wakes up one day and decides that they are violent or inappropriate. It could simply be that the audience in New Zealand isn't large enough to justify some series. I would say that this probably contributes to some series being relatively limited in terms of accessibility. 2) As you correctly pointed out, Dagger, this whole issue was raised because of some morning TV show/news program. It seems to me like this is simply a discussion that is taking place right now. Although it's worthy of discussion, it might be inappropriate to automatically assume that this will happen. So yeah. That's my four cents, or something.

Okay, I finally got around to making this thread. Basically, Kill Adam Underground is going to be an area for the participants (and any readers) to discuss the RPG itself. But before I say anything else, I want to mention that this thread isn't for spoilers and stuff. That is, I don't want to actually discuss what happens next in the RPG's story. Instead, I want to focus on the mechanics (if you're having trouble or you don't understand something that's already been written, it can be discussed/answered here). So again, this isn't for the purpose of revealing future stuff...it's for the purpose of discussing existing stuff. One of the first things I'm doing to do here, is actually post a full listing of the existing chapters, in chronological order (or at least, in linear order from 1 to whatever we're at now). Volume 1 Chapter 1: Diaz and the Autostrada Chapter 2: Gakuya Abazure Chapter 3: Porn Superstar Chapter 4: Adam's Switch Chapter 5: Two Sides of the Coin Chapter 6: Trailer Park Wars Chapter 7: Adam Talks Revenge Chapter 8: Lelia, Meet Arianna Chapter 9: Osaka Underground Chapter 10: Bath House Reflections Chapter 11: One Last Conversation Chapter 12: Meet Me at the Astro Lanes Volume 2 Chapter 13: Goodnight, Mr. Hanzo Chapter 14: My Persona Chapter 15: Osaka Invasion Chapter 16: Behind Bars Chapter 17: Birth of the Midnight Butterfly Chapter 18: The Shotgun Stiletto Some people have requested this, so yeah. I'm going to keep it updated all the time. I'll also use this thread to mention who is next in line to post, just to keep everyone updated. Also, before I finish up this initial post, I want to ask all participants to save the stuff that you don't post. So if you have any rough ideas or elements that you've removed from your final posts in the RPG, please keep them around. If there's enough stuff, I'm going to be making a Deleted Scenes thread, which may include not only Deleted Scenes...but also Director's Cut material (ie: the original versions of stuff that has since been edited). I encourage you to play around with multiple ideas before posting, both because it'll give us material for this new thread, but also because it will hopefully help you in your writing. So...if anyone wants to get the ball rolling on anything, I'm ready. ~_^

In terms of dimensions, the original concept DS was pretty darn small. I don't know if you guys actually saw anyone playing with it, but its width would probably be comparable to an N64 controller or something. The updated model is even smaller/thinner/lighter and features larger buttons. So it should be fine. Although to my knowledge, nobody has seen the shoulder buttons yet.
-
Hehe, actually, "aboriginal" is an incorrect word. "Aborigine" is the right term. ~_^ Although in recent years, the political correctness surrounding the use of both terms seems to have almost totally disappeared. Today, people tend to use both terms. The only real issue I have with the Australia reference is the natural resources question. Australia is rich in natural resources. Other than that, there are no big issues. You mentioned that there was never a British Empire, which cancels out a lot of civilizations (including the United States of America and many others). So obviously that radically changes things.

Yeah, what he said. I think that I should probably bring out the lock at this point...
-
This is an interesting question. When I think about the RPGs I've been in, I really have no idea what genres I truly prefer. But I can say that I generally don't go for the typical anime-style RPGs. I tend to try and go for things with a unique twist (Anime Stereotype Highschool is a cool example). I also like to generally go for things that are a bit different in concept. It's very hard to narrow that down into something specific though. I think these days, I tend to want to go for something a little more bizarre and colourful...but I have no idea what that is, exactly. (Most rambly post ever.)

Can you remove them for me? I'll PM the people the links to the images instead.
That's okay. They don't need to be removed. As the rules say, attachments must relate to the thread -- that's fine. If they are too big, OtakuBoards simply won't let you upload them. So yeah, they're fine. I just wanted to be sure.

I think that this question really depends on one thing; do you want the RPG to end? Most RPGs -- probably a good 95% of them -- never actually "finish". Nobody writes what could be considered a final post in the story. And I personally think that this is due in part to the dynamic nature of RPGs. When one story arc finishes, the next begins. And, more often than not, there are multiple side stories going on all at once. I think that if you want to end your RPG and have some kind of beginning, middle and end, you're going to need to have more creator involvement. The creator might be able to provide some basic direction/guideline for the overall story. But that doesn't mean that there can't be plenty of flexibility when it comes to giving each person a major role in the story. There are plenty of RPGs starting up at the moment, which are trying to strike that balance.

Silent Angel, what do the attachments in your first post relate to?

Is this the sincerest form of flattery? Hehe. Hm...well, I don't know if I'm a fence sitter any longer. I think I'm leading toward the PiroMunkie side here. I mean, this is one sexy animation, whichever way you look at it. It's very clean and the Kill Bill references only serve to make it cooler. Kill Bill is the way to my heart, yep.

I don't think there is really any solid, concrete way to tell. It's different for everyone. Sometimes very traditionally active members will quit an RPG or become bored of it. And sometimes people who generally aren't very active in RPGs will follow something through until the very end. I mean, when I look at Maverick Hunters: Personification, which is an RPG that primarily involved Flash, Warlock and myself, we all posted pretty regularly up until "the end". Of course, the story is only halfway through. But now, Flash and Warlock don't post anymore. I'm kinda the only one who has the desire to continue. lol This is despite the fact that both Flash and Warlock were really passionate about it at the beginning. So, I don't mean to actually criticise them or anything, I just mean to say that for whatever reason, their interest has declined, whereas mine hasn't. But sometimes, on other occasions, my interest declines. Case in point; Project Gamer. That RPG really started to become unfocused and spammy toward the end, which drove a few people out of it. And that's a shame, because it was a truly awesome RPG with huge potential. So really, it's very hard to predict these things.
