Well, on the subject of failures, I mean...Shigeru Miyamoto has had his failures in the past. Or at least, he's pushed certain ideas that haven't worked. Yet Nintendo know he's too much of an asset to simply fire him. I suspect that the same is true of Yokoi, particularly given Yokoi's senior status in the company for so many years. Either way, Yokoi is one interesting man. It's funny how the Virtual Boy crashed so badly, yet most of Yokoi's other innovations were stunning successes. Yokoi was really like "the Miyamoto of hardware", I guess.

I'm not sure that the failure of the Virtual Boy resulted in Yokoi being fired from Nintendo. From what I remember, he willingly left Nintendo to start his own development firm, Vic Tokai (which produced Dark Rift on the N64). As well all know, Yokoi died before the game was released. V_V; In my view, one of Nintendo's biggest mistakes is its inability to effectively communicate with the market. Games like Grand Theft Auto do not sell based on their quality. They sell based on their image and hype. I'm not saying that these games can't sell based on their quality, but there can be no question that hype and PR play 90% of the role when it comes to shifting these games off the shelves. During the GameCube's lifespan, for instance, Nintendo has certainly had plenty of material to work with. Games like Metroid Prime were indeed marketed more effectively than games like Pikmin or Mario Sunshine...but when you compare these efforts to those during the early days of the N64 (most noteably, games like Mario 64), the effort is really lackluster. Considering that Nintendo is the most profitable video game company in the world, and considering that it runs on no debt and on a massive cash surplus...you'd think that it would invest more energy in its public relations efforts. But not so. Still, Nintendo is learning. Things are starting to turn around. Nintendo will be in a much better position with its next generation game console, which it's already been working on for some time.

Actually, I like the idea of collapsing all gaming discussion (console gaming, anyway) into one forum. It would encourage a broader view of threads and I think it'd foster a greater sense of community there. I mean, with everything together, Nintendo players are discussing Sony, Sony players are discussing Microsoft and so on. I like the idea.

To coincide with the launch of theOtaku.com Version Next in early July, I am currently in the process of preparing the development of OtakuBoards v7. Right now, there's not too much to say about it. It will use an all-new Virtual Bulletin software (vB3). And no, none of you will need to sign up again or anything; your accounts, posts, threads, attachments and so on will be saved and ported over. However, OBv7 will be very new, in terms of its software and design. So, Justin Blessing and I will be developing a prototype board on another server, which we'll then use as a basis for OB itself. The reason I'm creating this thread is because I want to get everyone's ideas about what they'd like to see in v7. You might simply want to see a new forum...or you might have a really wacky idea for some new interactive feature. Either way, I want to hear what you've got to say. Suggestions made in this thread could contribute to OBv7 -- to making it even more streamlined and suitable for all members. If there are any questions, you can also ask them here.

I think SoaD is pretty talented in some respects, and some of their songs have a pretty catchy melody to them. But generally, I don't like a lot of their "fight the power" type songs. Those songs are too preachy and factually inaccurate for me to enjoy. I just don't like the attitude that permeates those particular tracks. On the whole though, I guess I'm pretty indifferent. That is, I don't mind one way or the other. I'm not a fan of the band -- I'd never buy their music. But by the same token, I don't actually hate them as passionately as some people do.

The journey toward Xen was relatively uneventful, at least compared to the experiences of recent days. Proteus made every effort to explain the situation to Havoc as best he could. But it wasn't easy; Proteus himself found it difficult to interpret recent events, as so much of it made no sense to him. But nonetheless, Havoc listened intently to his words while Iota and Demos continued to focus on piloting the enormous vehicle through busy desert roads. The Impact had now entered the outskirts of Xen, a city of damned souls, as some had called it. Sure, it was polluted and overcrowded, but the hunters were somewhat relieved to be here as opposed to Novus Concordia. For each of them, Xen represented something different. But fundamentally, it was a new experience - wholly different from the regemented lives that they were all so used to at Hunter HQ. Still, it wasn't an entirely relieving experience. Each of the reploids had a sense that something wasn't right in this place. It wasn't necessarily the crime, or the fact that both humans and reploids were sometimes seen settling their disputes with violence on the streets. It was something else. Demos interrupted the silence inside the Impact's cabin. "Hey guys, we're nearly at Warlock's garage. It's only about a block away," he said. But as the Impact ambled its way through the winding streets -- and was Warlock's home came into view -- no activity could be seen. The garage door was open, and Warlock's hovercar was visible inside. Proteus stood behind Demos. "Let's just park this thing on the street. It's too big for the garage. Nobody can steal it, thanks to the retina locks," he said. Demos nodded and steered the massive vehicle into a nearby sidelane. The vehicle's engines were humming a little more quietly now and they slowly reduced their chatter as the Impact settled itself down on the road's surface. The heavy rear hatch opened slowly and the four hunters exited, each holding a couple of loads of firearms. They crossed the street and Proteus knocked on Warlock's front door. As he did so, the door swung open slightly. Proteus briefly looked back at his comrades, who all looked a little confused. "I wonder where he is," mumbled Proteus quietly. He pushed the door open and walked inside, followed by the others. Various vehicle parts were sitting up against the walls, some of them looked as though they were in the middle of being cleaned. And, further down the hall, Proteus could see various firearms, which Warlock appeared to be restoring himself. Iota lay her firearms down on the floor. "Well, wherever he is, I'm sure he'll return soon," she said. The others nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we better get this stuff put away somewhere," said Demos. "We'll talk to him about it when he gets back." The hunters picked up their firearms once more and wandered upstairs, where they organized their cache in a spare room. Proteus sat down next to Havoc, who was resting on a spare mattress. "Feeling alright?" he asked. Havoc groaned a little and turned his head to look at Proteus. "Yeah...I guess you could say that," he replied groggily. Proteus smiled. "I'm glad. You know, your brother cares about you..." At first, there was no reply. And then, Havoc nodded slowly. "Yeah..." he muttered. Proteus was about to continue the discussion, when Iota suddenly burst into the room. Havoc sat up almost instantly and Proteus jumped to his feet. "Ugh! Don't do that!" cried Proteus. "It's not like this is a nice neighbourhood; we never know who is hanging around!" "I'm sorry," breathed Iota, "but we have a situation." "What situation?" queried Havoc, as he rose to his feet carefully. "I'm receiving a strange energy signature," Iota began," and...it's not machine, nor human." "Then what is it?" said Proteus, with a tone of urgency in his voice. "Cyborg," replied Iota. "&$#@!" cried Demos from somewhere downstairs. "Something is coming! Arm yourselves!" "Quick!" said Proteus, "let's get up on the roof for a better view!" Iota nodded and followed Proteus out the door and up onto the roof, via a nearby fire exit. Proteus stood on the roof's edge and squinted slightly. The lenses in his eyes rotated backwards, and were replaced with a second set, which were slightly larger. Telescopic lenses. Proteus squinted once more and zoomed his viewpoint forward by several hundred fold. And there it was, a large figure, dashing through the crowded streets by foot, knocking people over as it went. "Can you see what it is?" asked Iota. Proteus zoomed further and concentrated. "Oh! Yes..." he stuttered. "Well? What is it?!" cried Iota. Proteus zoomed out and turned to face her. "It's Massacre. He must have followed us. I don't know how we can have any chance of beating him!" "I'll tell Demos!" cried Iota, as she began pushed past the door and leapt down the stairs. Proteus swallowed hard. He remembered their last encounter with Massacre all too well. Was Massacre here for him? To bring him back to Red Alert 05? Or worse...to kill him?
Originally posted by r-studios Being us vegeterians n all we wanted to save it from being hit by a car. Most likely it was trying to learn to fly.
Yeah, us omnivores would probably have speared it and eaten it instead! :drunk: Ahem, anyway. I have a similar story. My family and I were holidaying at Phillip Island one year (an island near Melbourne) and we came across a seagull on the beach...its wing was broken. And it was kind of being "harassed" by other birds and stuff. Clearly, if we'd left it, it would have died. At the very least, the tide would have come in and drowned it. So, I took a tea towel and carefully covered it...and put it in a cardboard box with a soft lining. We had actually planned to visit the Penguin Parade that night (which takes place on a beach with a wildlife center nearby). So, we took the box with the seagull in it...and when we bought tickets, we went to the wildlife hospital there and handed over the seagull to them. I'm guessing they probably put it down, because I doubt that they'd invest their time and money healing a seagull (considering that they're a dime a dozen at Phillip Island...as opposed to being endangered or something). But anyway, at the very least...we knew that they'd put it down peacefully. So I was comforted by the fact that, rather than being drowned...or eaten alive by something on the beach, the bird was at least in a quiet, warm place where it could die peacefully.

Oh yeah, I'm sure that you're right. EGM's always been a well-respected magazine. I suppose it's just that they've printed a few really anti-Nintendo things in recent months, which even most gaming sites have disregarded. So perhaps this is where I get my impression from. But yeah, I haven't read the magazine in a while, so I really haven't kept up to speed on the way they deal with things in totality. Still, reading EGM is a whole lot better than reading Nintendo Power or Official Xbox Magazine. At least you're getting something independent with EGM.

Anime My theory of every unanswered question on this show....
James replied to OtakuSennen's topic in Otaku Central
Well, we have to bear in mind that not everyone has seen the series. The fact that this thread tries to explain a theory about what has already happened suggests that the member who created it hasn't seen the event unfold. So, all I'm asking for is common sense. Of course, if you're in a thread where you're discussing a particular spoiler...that's fine. But as you know, we are always encouraging liberal use of spoiler tags when discussing any series. Even in anime lounge, when discussing older series, most people use spoiler tags as is appropriate. Anyway, the question is answered now (by virtue of both spoiler free posts and the fact that the episode in question has now aired). -
Yeah, but let's not get into semantics here. You're talking about something like Perfect Dark's multiplayer. I mean, at least let's have some consistency. lol

Ohh and EGM didnt say anything about them dieing but they did say Going down hill.
Sorry, I meant to say Perfect Dark 2. You can't criticise Nintendo for making sequels and then talk about how much you want a sequel. It doesn't gel. lol And EGM...they're known for being a bit anti-Nintendo. Though I haven't read them in a while, so I don't know how true that is.

EA is making a Goldeneye 2, apparently. Probably for all consoles, I'd say. Funny how you said you're sick of the remakes, but you're asking for a sequel to Goldeneye. ~_^ I think you'd really love Metroid Prime. It's wonderful. ^_^
Originally posted by Majin Buu Is Nintendo going to die out like Sega did.. I read in EGM that they thought thats what it was looking like.. If the case what will you guys to then?
Well, Sega hasn't really "died out". The opposite is true, if anything. The company is slowly improving its financial position, by way of software publishing only. Nintendo is unlikely to follow that route for a great variety of reasons. Not the least of which being the fact that the company's hardware business is profitable, unlike that of Sega. The GameCube is a profitable venture; Nintendo makes software profits on first/second/third party software, and it is also apparently making profits on hardware units now as well (as is Sony - the only company still making hardware losses is Microsoft at this stage). So, Nintendo won't be going the way of Sega anytime soon.
-
Well, believe me, the credit is due. It's nice to see discussion that moves away from the traditional "is this game worth buying?" to a slightly deeper analysis of the industry. Of course, there's room for the former...but it's nice to get a bit more of the latter. ~_^

The Wind Waker implies (and pretty much states directly) that a new hero is reincarnated at certain intervals. So this seems to be the message that Nintendo is sending about the entire series, even though it's something that is probably a "newer idea", so to speak. EDIT: Yeah, sorry about that 'breko. I got what you said mixed up somewhere there. o_O Maybe I was thinking of all those people who try to claim that the Link is the same one throughout the entire series. Chalk it up to my Phazon cookie addiction. Anyway. I don't see the complaints here as valid. And there's one main complaint I take issue with; the idea that Nintendo is making "remakes" of old games. What about Super Mario Sunshine is similar to Super Mario 64? Very little. If you go back and play SM64 right after SMS, you will find that not only are SMS's controls vastly superior, but the majority of the game's challenges are entirely unique. FLUDD adds so much to gameplay and it's more of a fundamental element than you might think. And then there's Metroid Prime. I'm not very experienced with the older Metroids, but I've certainly experienced them to a degree. The idea that MP is a "remake" is simply ignoring the artistry involved. Metroid Prime is one of the most innovative games of this generation. I get frustrated when people talk about Nintendo making countless sequels. That's not what Nintendo does. Nintendo takes new gameplay concepts and uses familiar characters to allow players to warm to new concepts. Luigi's Mansion is a prime example. Strip away Luigi and what do you have? Something completely different to anything else. From the controls, to the theme, to the actual progression of gameplay and the challenges...you have something very original and unique there. But people say "Oh it's just another Mario game or whatever" simply because it includes Luigi. When Super Mario Kart first came out, people weren't saying "It's yet another Mario sequel" just because it included Mario. Mario was used to introduce something new...to add familiarity to it. The same can be said about games like Mario Party and Mario Golf. Also, you're asking what did the Nintendo GameCube come with? Well, granted, I can see why you'd buy PS2 for its DVD player as an addition. And that's fine. But honestly, why do you buy a game machine in the first place? You buy it to play games. And GameCube is just as worthy as any other system in this regard, if not moreso. I mean, your choice is your own. And you're not wrong for choosing PlayStation 2. I own a PlayStation 2 and I love it; I've had many fantastic gaming experiences with it. And I'll probably be one of the first inline to buy PS3. So, no, it doesn't mean that I'm a "Nintendo hater". Quite the contrary. And so, I think we're all pretty open minded here...we're not going to accuse you of hating Nintendo. But, I think that your reasons for rejecting GameCube aren't educated reasons. You know? You're kind of ignoring the wonderful things that it has to offer. Dismissing The Wind Waker merely due to its "kiddy" graphics is, put simply, immature. Even if you dislike the style, you owe it to yourself to play this game...if you liked Ocarina of Time, I guarantee that you'll like TWW. You might not like the visual style, but you'll find the game itself enjoyable.

My feeling is basically that every person has the freedom to make choices about issues like this. If you are with someone who you love and you're not married, but you want to have sex, nobody has the right to tell you that you can't. Even if you're not in love -- if you want to have sex, it's nobody else's business. Of course, everybody applies different rules to their own lives. Some people like to wait, others just wait until love (regardless of marriage) and others don't take the subject so seriously, and they might end up having sex with someone they care about...but don't necessarily love. My feeling is that love isn't necessarily easy to come by. In our lives, we might go out with ten different people and we may not truly love any of them. So many married people are not truly, deeply in love, either. Look at the divorce rates as an example. So, I think that sex is to be enjoyed. I don't mean to say that it's necessarily right to have sex with every single person you meet or something, but at the same time, sex needs to be put into perspective. It's likely, for many of us, that we will meet someone who we "like" well before we are married (if we ever get married, that is). And so, if you're having sex with someone you trust...someone you have feelings for...and someone who you enjoy having sex with, I personally don't see any issue there. But by the same token, I think that sex becomes devalued if you just go around and do it with anyone you meet. So there's a fine line. Basically though, the bottom line is that sex is a very personal thing. Nobody ever has the right to look at you and tell you that your sex life is "disguting" or "wrong" (unless you're actually breaking the law or something, perhaps). But generally, everybody has different ideas about sex...different ideas about their own sex lives, and so on. Telling someone that their sex life is wrong is very rude, basically. As long as you're making decisions that you are comfortable with in your life, I don't think you have a reason to worry. Anyway, that's longer than I intended. lol
