1.
Originally posted by Mitch Jamesy, I'm not being harsh. But if anyone here really wants to be a writer, you have to outdo yourself and go the extra yard. The blank page won't get anywhere unless you take your hand and paint the picture. I can understand that people live busy lives. But this thing to me is dead serious. These people here joined because they have something with writing. They like it in one way or another. Thus, this is serious for me. If it is for them, they would've written something even if it was completely bad, heh. I didn't say they had to do some magic, awesome, witty tale. I'm just disappointed they didn't submit something. I'm not meaning to be harsh, but this thing is dead serious to me. Writing is dead serious to me. It's everything I am and more.
I understand where you're coming from. And I agree from my own perspective; when I start an RPG, I expect people to remain committed and dedicated. And I usually point that out before the RPG commences. In that regard, both you and Mnemolth are exactly right. Mnemolth did state what he expected to see initially -- so people were joining with knowledge of what was expected. However, we have to realize that this is a give and take situation. Not everyone, as I said, is as committed to writing as you are, Mitch. And not everyone necessarily has to be ultra-committed in order to have fun. And let's face it, that's what this forum is about; fun and creativity. It's worthless to scold people to get angry if they have other commitments. Often, that can't be helped. And as I said, no matter how much of a writer you think you are, you're not always going to have the creative juices flowing. Even the greatest writers come across stumbling blocks at some point. From my own experience, I know that it's no fun to write if there is pressure put on you. Sure, people have joined with an understanding (and an agreement) of what was required. But just as they are willing to invest their personal time to build the story, it's up to the membership at large to provide at least some leeway for the natural time consuming occurrances in people's lives. I know that I can't necessarily be sitting here all day dreaming up stories for RPGs -- it's unfortunate and sometimes annoying. But by the same token, you don't have to give up everything else in your life in order to be a great writer. I can tell you from experience (having already had articles regularly published in national magazines), that there are many other pressures that can take up your time. It's far less enjoyable to write when you have that pressure on you from your peers. But, certainly, I do accept your point of view on the issue. I'd feel the same if it were my RPG -- it's not nice to be "left out in the cold", so to speak. So I understand you and Mnemolth. You have very reasonable feelings. I guess I'm just emphasizing that we shouldn't take things too seriously with other members on issues like this. Everyone is different and everyone has different circumstances and passions. For you, it might be worthwhile to sit there all day and come up with stories etc... But for others, they might need to get all their homework out of the way before they can let go and be creative. It's all down to the individual. As a creative person, I'd have thought that you would understand that by default. ^_^
2. Sometimes you might find that people with tattooes and piercings are actually very quiet -- it's a way of expressing themselves without speech or whatever. In some cases, I think it's true. I've met people with both...and it doesn't really phase me. It's not something I'd do myself, but in my opinion, it's no different from having coloured hair. Of course, if your body is totally covered with tattooes...it probably shows a lack of taste and it most likely won't get you a good job. But you know, everyone is different. It just depends what your priorities are and how you want to express yourself. There are always generalizations about people's looks and stuff -- mostly, you can't assume something about someone based on how they look. I've found that out so many times with my own experiences. Although, I guess that if you're going to be covered in tattooes...well, you have to assume and expect that some people will react to you in a negative way (at least initially). It might not be right, but it's a natural reaction for some people. The only way that it stops is if those people actually get to know someone who looks like that. I don't think it's a deliberate discrimination as such, though. It's just a fear of the unknown or the different. Same as racism and homophobia, I guess, but on a much much lower level. If you aren't familiar with a certain thing, your primary reaction is mostly going to be reservation or awkwardness. So yeah, people who have the tattooes have to be aware of that (and I'm sure they are). And people who don't have them need to be a bit more aware of their own behavior in public, I'd say.

Very nice. I like it a lot. The character and background are really suited to one another. Excellent work. I'd give it a 7.5/10.
4.
Originally posted by Mitch Juu, you know, I got to school, too. lol. I have tests, homework, the whole platter. And just because you went on vacation is an excuse, but it doesn't work, heh. There's always time to write. Always. Heck, I write in my head all of the time. I go over what I feel like writing. Just write something, something, something. Something. Get it? I still find time to write. And you don't need a computer to write. Paper is better.
Don't be too harsh on people if they fail to participate. Juu is right; sometimes you don't have the time to write. You might have a mental block, or you might simply want to do something other than writing with your spare time. It's understandable. I always feel that if I'm pressured or forced to write something for an RPG, I'm not really enjoying it...and thus, the writing isn't really what I want it to be. It's fair that people only want to write if they are feeling passionate or if they have ideas. Not everyone is spending all their free time writing, so I don't think it's too unreasonable for people to have other commitments. ~_^
5. This is an interesting thread. ^_^ It's really hard to say what might happen in 500 years or so. The only thing you can do, I think, is look at current trends in society and amplify them. So, for instance... I think cloning will be commonplace in 500 years -- people will use it to have children, it'll be used to stop animals going extinct and it'll be used to clone replacement organs for transplants (thus, nobody will ever wait for a transplant. There won't be any pollution in 500 years, either. Even within this century, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will become common place. When you and I are 80 years old, everyone will have fuel cell cars -- nobody will be using internal combustion engines anymore. Industry will also find ways of manufacturing with less pollution. And, products like cars and computers will become bio-degradable in 500 years. Did you know that Nissan is developing a type of paint for their cars, which is a synthetic version of the colored dust found on butterfly's wings? It can be sprayed onto the car and it's 100% bio-degradable; no pollution or toxins. In 500 years, I think there will be a lot less war. Most of the world will be made up of democracies. There will be far fewer third world nations, also. In 500 years, space travel will have advanced exponentially. I'm sure that by then, we'll be travelling far beyond our own solar system. I'm also positive that things like anti-gravity may be engineered by that time; I was watching a documentary about inventions that are being developed at the moment...and apparently anti-gravity technology is possible. There are quite a few interesting things that are being worked on, that we currently aren't really aware of. In 500 years, there probably won't be any prejudice/racism/homophobia. That's just a natural progression of society; each generation is inherently less prejudiced. I also don't think that religion will have a large place in society in 500 years. I think that's also a kind of inevitable trend. But yeah, it's really hard to say what will happen. Just look at what's happened in the last 100 years. Man learned to fly and travel to the moon -- in 1900, most of that stuff was total science fiction. So who knows what we'll achieve in only another 100 years. I don't know if any of the above things are negative or positive, but those are the broader things that I think will probably happen. Of course, you never know what will happen...things might be totally different to what anyone assumes. EDIT: Oh, and on the ozone thing. Scientists have discovered that the hole in the ozone layer is actually shrinking. Cars have become far more efficient in the last three/four decades and as a result, pollution produced by them has decreased. So it's not all doom and gloom; pollution is actually being reduced all the time. And with the introduction of hydrogen cars over the next 20 years, it will drop even further. As for the nuke thing...I think the whole idea there is pretty ridiculous. Yes, if we set of dozens of nuclear blasts everywhere, we'd probably have a so-called nuclear winter. But it's not very realistic to suggest that this would happen anyway -- the world is always moving in a more peaceful and democratic direction. I don't think we'll ever be in a situation where we have two massive world wars within one century. The idea that we're always descending into darkness is popular among some -- but I don't think it's very accurate at all.
6. Tsukasa, you're clearly new here...so I'll inform you about how things work. It's important to check the first and second pages to see if there is a similar thread to the one you want to create -- if you look a short way back, you'll find a massive thread that is just like this. So, of course, I recommend reading our rules (all members are required to understand and accept them prior to registering).
7. Well, Saywha is really expressing a mainstream view here. Would you say that games like Killer 7 or The Wind Waker have no style? I wouldn't. GameCube's 2003 offerings are some of the most "stylish" you'll ever see. If anything, the GameCube's library will improve. Even though there are many great games available already, there's also a lot to look forward to. I think the key is just to be as informed as you can. I think Nintendo went downhill in some ways with Nintendo 64, but I think they're actually improving things with the GCN/GBA combination.
8. It's so interesting how people are now embracing the new design. Remember when Nintendo first revealed TWW and everyone in America was like "Ugh!"? It's the complete reverse now. And I think it's great -- people are starting to understand why the style was chosen and how integral it is to the entire game. The updated battle system is one of the best bits. There's one part where you
come across an enemy who is wearing a metal vest to protect himself. If you hit him, you won't do much damage. But, as he goes to swing at you, you press B (at the right time -- when it goes spikey on the screen) and Link flips over the creature's head and lands behind him. Then, you press B again at the right time to split open his armor at the back -- thus revealing his soft bits. (That sounded kind of weird...but anyway).
These timed battle elements will be a very interesting addition, I'm sure. I'm also glad that in Australia, we don't have to preorder to get the bonus disc. Preordering is usually painless, but it's nice to know that there won't be a shortage of Master Quest.
9. The thing I like most about my life is simply the people who are in it. People who I know professionally, who are in my family and who are friends...I've met a lot of really wonderful people in my lifetime. And when the chips are down, I can always tell who my true friends are; you know, the people who will always support me. It's comforting to be able to talk to people and it's always an honor to be able to give someone some good advice...or just to listen to them. Really, everything in my life that is good revolves around people. Whether it's a job or whether it's my home or my love life or whatever else; it all comes down to individual people who make it all possible.
10. Well, even when we did have this software-imposed limit, there were quite a few people who still had pretty massive signatures. For instance, I don't think Juuthena's buddy list would need to be shortened. It might be very long, but if there are no line breaks, it can continue pretty much forever (although of course, I hope that people will be sensible about signature length).
11. Ugh, there is no "virus debate". You will notice that I edited my post. I wasn't very clear about my contention. Originally, I was talking about the idea that viruses are involved in the process of evolution -- whether or not they are living organisms wasn't actually my contention. I was talking about them in the context of their existence inside animals/humans. But, yes...as I said to Cloricus, I wasn't very clear about that. So I apologize for that lack of clarity. As you can see, Chris, I edited the "debate" part out of my post so that I was sticking completely to the thread's closure. I would also point out that I wasn't actually wrong about viruses. I was as right as Mitch was; the classification of viruses is irrelevant. It's not an issue of classification, it's an issue of interaction with nature and the process of evolution. But once again, I didn't make that clear enough in my original post -- so Mitch obviously responded to the peripheral issue and not the actual contention. So, your own post even says that viruses can't necessarily be defined as either living or non living. It's highly questionable (and pretty silly) to suggest that I'm posting something "completely false"; if you are saying that to me, then you can say the very same thing to Mitch. Anyway, why is this thread continuing? lol. The only reason I'm even allowing your post to stand is the fact that I myself wasn't clear with my own words earlier -- but in the future, you, Mitch and all members are advised to take my warnings about such threads seriously. Staff in particular shouldn't be interjecting and circumventing my own decisions. I expect that I won't have to repeat that ever again. And I trust that there will be no further posts in this thread.
12. EDIT: For the sake of actually NOT continuing this discussion, I've edited out my response. I want to make it clear that this post is an explanation of my own decision making on this thread. Firstly, it's always important to read my posts thoroughly. I never blamed you for the direction of the thread. I simply said that it would be nice if we could avoid repetitive threads -- and this thread, whatever its intention, is principally a repetition of several threads already in existence. Obviously, I do allow some leeway for certain things. If people just talk about their opinions, that's fine. But I made it very clear that a debate was not to be repeated here. And what happened? The exact opposite of what I warned against. You yourself are not a contributor to that. However, other staff and members decided to completely disregard my warning about the thread's direction. And so, I made the decision to close the thread. Don't hate me; hold those who are responsible for the issue accountable. I'm not the one who took the thread to an irrelevant place -- I'm simply the one who made a judgement on where it was going. So, I'm as disappointed as you are. But I'm not going to sit here and micromanage every single thread just because a few people feel that it has merit -- if it's going way off course despite warnings, it will be closed or deleted. I don't make any apology for that decision. Whenever I do something, I'm always risking doing something that is unpopular. But that's what I'm here for; I bear the burden and the responsibility of that. I only ask that you remember what I've said and that you focus your attention on those who actually caused the thread's decline. Those are the people who need to consider their behavior in future.
13.
Originally posted by FlasherMXer Help People!
Er, Flasher...that's really not good enough. You know how this site works. Provide more specifics. "Help people!" just doesn't cut it. lol Please put more effort into your future posts. This is the last warning I'm going to give you; your post quality on OB has not been very good of late.
14. Geez, a trillion bucks? I don't think anyone could spend that kind of money. Hehe Though I'm sure I could find plenty of uses for it. ~_^ For starters, I'd give my family and friends money. And, I would put aside a few billion dollars for the homeless and such (to help them find work and to build high quality shelters). I'd also use the money to build drug rehabilitation clinics (there are never enough of those). Also, I'd spend a few billion on building modern hospitals in Africa...and I'd buy millions of doses of AIDS drugs and such -- so that people could get it for free. I'd put aside a couple of billion for charities and I'd spend a few billion on disease research institutes. What else...even spending all that, I'd still have billions and billions of dollars. lol I mean, a trillion is one thousand billion...that's just so much money. o_O I don't know if I can list everything here. I think, once I've spent a percentage of the money on worthy causes like those above...I might use some of the money to start my own company. I mean, I could invest $100 billion in capital or something...that would last forever. lol I'd also spend some of the money on "things I like"...like a house (or twenty lol) and cars and stuff like that. But really, even if you bought dozens of enormous mansions and hundreds of exotic sports cars...you wouldn't make a huge dent in a one trillion dollar fund. So I don't know. If I had enough money to support my company...and enough money to live as comfortably as I want...I'd still probably have hundreds of billions of dollars left. And I think I'd spend all of that on important causes that I want to address. I'd love to just give out money. Can you imagine going to the home of a REALLY desperately poor family, and signing a 1 million dollar cheque for them? I would love to do things like that. It would be so satisfying to help people who are down on their luck.
15. Oh yeah, I know how you feel. I mean, I'm still waiting for Metroid Prime to arrive! It comes out here in early April. Nintendo Australia REALLY dropped the ball on MP. I mean, with TWW...the delay between the United States and Australia is only a couple of months. Probably less, because it will launch near the start of the month. And that's okay; most Australian gamers can tolerate that. But Metroid Prime...it came out in the United States at the end of last year. And here we are, waiting until April for it. There's really no excuse; the translation was in place and everything...blah. Oh well. MP will tide me over until Zelda. So in a way, I'm glad MP hasn't come out 'till now -- I don't have the cash for too many games these days. lol The more I read about TWW though, the more I want it. For example, the US version (and all other versions by inference) have some MAJOR fixes in terms of certain puzzles that were a bit repetitive. It's fantastic that Nintendo is paying that much attention -- if they'd just left it alone, it'd still be a great game...but that would be really lazy on Nintendo's part. It's also a shame that University takes up so much of my time. Without Uni, I'd have had The Wind Waker skin done by now. But I guess this gives me more time to plan it out. Who knows; we might be able to get it up just as the game releases in the USA! ^_^
16. If you've been keeping up on the news, you'll probably have read that The Wind Waker has currently hit 560,000 preorders in the United States. Apparently, the number of preorders at Electronics Boutique is the largest ever for that retail outlet. In fact, EB has said that The Wind Waker currently has more preorders than GTA: Vice City, which surprised me greatly. So, who has actually preordered the game? It's only coming out in a couple of weeks in the USA...so maybe we can create an impressions thread for people to read. Australia won't be getting TWW until May (I hope they add some further fixes from the US version, although the US version fixed a few Japanese issues which is good), so I'd love to read what everyone thinks of it. ^_^
17. Once again, the term "evolution theory" is misunderstood. Gokents, it is common knowledge that evolution occurs. All you have to do is look at the publicly available fossil record and the various carbon and radioactive dating. And nobody can tell me that somehow scientists misinterpret fossils -- similar bone-study techniques are used in forensic science for identification and dating purposes. There's just TOO MUCH evidence to start doubting the truths of evolution in mankind. In addition, I would remind you once again about things like viruses. Viruses are living organisms who evolve over a period of generations -- once again, look at how the AIDS virus adapts to our anti-AIDS drugs with each passing generation. They build up a resistance through a process of evolution; just as human beings and other creatures evolve through each generation. The idea that monkeys morphed into humans is laughable. And using that as a way of arguing against evolution only PROVES a 0% understanding of even the most basic elements of biology and evolution. There are many unknowns about evolution; we don't fully know how it happens in all cases, although there are many cases where processes are documented and studied. But make no mistake, the term "evolution theory" doesn't mean that evolution is some airy fairy textbook idea. It's very much a proven scientific fact -- without knowledge of evolution, we'd have no doctors, we'd not be able to drill for oil and we certainly wouldn't be able to engineer certain anti-virus drugs. So simply saying that evolution doesn't exist is laughably ignorant. Now, we could sit here and debate this back and forth forever. But I'm not going to let that happen. We've ALREADY had a thread that was IDENTICAL do this; it was no different. And everyone says the same old stuff every single time. Yes, I do keep bringing up "Telling Lies for God", as Sara points out. But nobody who is a creationist has bothered to read the book. And thus, a debate can't progress -- there is no effort to actually learn about science and nature. And really, anyone who tries to explain evolution is only asking people to actually learn about nature. That's all. I really hope that we can start creating some new threads -- at least, something that isn't frequently identical. It's a self-defeating exercise and it only stagnates Otaku Lounge. It's always great when a fresh, new thread pops up and where we can really see people's views on a wider variety of topics. We're in danger of really limiting ourselves here, I think. As I always say, if anyone wants to sit there and debate evolution/religion any further, I'd ask you to do it on your own time and within your own space (maybe a Yahoo or MSN group). I want to try and avoid this kind of repetition in Otaku Lounge, where possible. The same goes for all the Iraq threads and stuff; one discussion is fine...maybe even two in a long period. But a handful in a matter of months is going a bit too far. Obviously, nobody (including Moderators) listened to my original post in regard to the course of this thread. And that fact in particular is what gives me far less hope that we can conduct serious conversations in the future.
18. Your signature was never edited. The "image not found" text appears when there's some sort of problem (sometimes it appears when the banner is too large). I have no idea what the problem could be though.
19.
Originally posted by GinnyLyn Gokents covered my bases pretty well on the theory of evolution. (That one joke about evolution: if we evolved from monkeys, then why are they still here? .:rotflmao:.)
And that, Ginny, only demonstrates that you don't know much about evolution. ~_^ Nobody says that monkeys turned into man. That's about as foolish as saying that woman derived from man's rib. Rather, scientific fact tells us that modern apes and man share a common ancestor in our species' collective history. The problem with evolution is that you have hardcore creationists who use faulty science to try and disprove evolution fact ("evolution theory", if you actually read about it, is a term that is not used to suggest that evolution is only an unproven theory -- many people misunderstand that). And, lay individuals who don't know any better (or who have never studied evolution in school) go along with it. It's easy. No effort required. But of course, with that lack of effort (and possibly the desire to learn some knowledge) comes a level of ignorance on the subject. Also, let's not forget that evolution and God do not have to be two seperate entities. Why not propose that God is responsible for the intelligent design of evolution? That is a proposition which sits very comfortably with many people -- including the Pope, who has already (as I say again and again) officially recognized evolution and made it inclusive of the Church. The biggest problem in these debates is that very few people really have a great deal of knowledge about evolution (at least, very few who are believers in creationism). And so, you're never going to get a debate that goes anywhere. It is just a circle that goes around and around -- and unfortunately, it becomes something that is ideologically driven. And so, if you are supporting the evidence and undeniable fact of evolution (and if you don't believe there are undeniable facts, just look at how the AIDS virus is adapting itself to be drug resistant -- yet another case of natural evolution), you are often going to be called "anti-God" or you're going to be painted as someone who hates religion/God. It's very difficult to have a debate under such circumstances. With that said, I'm going to make two points about this thread. Firstly, I urge everyone to read Mitch's original post. He did not ask for a debate on evolution; he asked for everyone to simply list their own beliefs. And that's fine. I would also make one other point. This thread should not become an evolution debate. It shouldn't become an evolution debate both for the reasons listed above, as well as the fact that we've had a myraid of such debates in the past -- and if anyone wants to know what OB members think on the subject, they only have to perform a quick search of the site. There is plenty of material on here relating to that subject. On a secondary note, I also want to encourage everyone to actually consider some new threads. When we have a "dry" period, we somehow inevitably come back to religion or abortion or something political. These threads have merit, but not when they are being repeated frequently. And I would submit that this type of thread (in its many guises) has been repeated on a frequent basis. That said, I encourage Charles and other Category Moderators to watch this thread closely. I will also be watching. If this thread digresses into the same old debate (which never brings anything fruitful, especially when we've already had intelligent debates on the same subject), it should be closed immediately. I'm a little bit disappointed that Mitch couldn't find something else to start a thread about, but I do accept the original intent of the thread...that it wasn't a flat out debate situation. I hope that it continues in an appropriate way.
20.
Originally posted by treton_noir no kidding. maybe you misunderstood my use of the term "limit". i meant "limit" as a "suggested limit", not as a "software imposed limit". is that better?
Actually, we had a software imposed limit of 8 lines. 8 lines is more than enough. I know it doesn't sound like much, but you might be misinterpreting what 8 lines actually means. For instance, if you keep writing in a single line without an actual line break...and due to text wrapping, you end up with a 100 line sig...OB software won't block it. So it's not just a black and white eight lines. And of course, you could have only five or six lines and have massive text and stuff...so it's not really a question of the lines being too many or too little.
21. We no longer have software-imposed signature limits. These were deleted when we moved server (all hacks were removed and had to be reinstalled). As it happens, I don't think that the signature limit was re-established. So it's something I'll talk to the tech staff about.
22. I'm sorry about these latest issues with theOtaku.com. I can assure you that Adam is constantly trying to solve these problems. The problems relate to server trouble which we've been having lately. We've also had some coding issues with our latest site, but it's nothing that can't be fixed in time. So, once again, on behalf of Adam and myself...we're sorry about the current downtime problems. We hope to have things running smoothly again very soon.
23. Name: Sabel Kahn Age: Unknown Race: Elf Weapons: Sabel carries a single sword, crafted from fine Mythril. Sabel was given the sword as part of his quest; it was produced within his own kingdom and awarded to him by the king himself. Bio: Sabel was born in the kindgom of Solstice, in the far east. Solstice is one of the few true Elven kingdoms left standing in the far east, after a brutal war ravaged those lands many generations ago. The war was started by two Elven kings, who had a personal feud between themselves. It is not known exactly what their resentment and hatred was based upon and even now, the residents of Solstice cannot provide a clear reason for the battles. In recent times, strange men have entered Solstice from the far west -- men corrupted by greed. These events have shaken the very foundations of Solstice and stories of a legendary fountain, once forgotten, have now resurfaced in the consciousness of all in the kingdom. In an effort to prevent further regional wars, the king has charged Sabel with the task of investigating the legend of the fountain on behalf of the royal family. Sabel was chosen because, for many years, he worked as a loyal bodyguard to the king. His sense of honor and duty is shadowed only by his prowess in battle. On his travels, Sabel encountered a mystical horse, which he named Esperna. The horse took an immediate liking to Sabel, transforming from a wild beast to a tame animal. However, the creature's alien body markings leave Sabel with some level of vague discomfort whenever he rides it.
