Originally posted by DeathKnight Why? Most of them drink to get numb the pains of whatever they are dealing with. That's why I drink.... Moreover, it will potentially damage your life in the future (especially if you develop a dependancy/addiction). Drinking let's you escape for a mere moment in time. But overall, it makes you feel worse than you started off in the first place. :) It's not a solver of problems...it only makes that dark spiral darker and darker.

Kids who drink underage (as in, 13/14 or so) make me utterly sick. Frankly, when I was that age...and I saw one or two kids drinking...I thought that they were absolute losers. I wondered why any normal kid would want to get trashed and spend their money on something so destructive...I never understood it. I am of legal drinking age...yet I just don't have the urge to drink much at all. If I ever drink, it's pretty rare...I just don't see the point lol. I don't think that the idea of passing out in a total mess on the floor is my idea of a good time...

C'mon guys! Let's get this RPG going! ;) Karu and Calya spent the next few hours making their way down the Great Tree's trunk. It was time for Karu to leave. Just as they had reached the base and hopped off their Trunk Beetles, Mahl suddenly appeared infront of them. Karu: Whoa...what are you doing here, Mahl? Mahl: I'm here to give you your staff. :) Mahl reached into his robes and produced a small wooden staff. It resembled a small tree branch, yet it was smoothe and polished. At the top of the staff, there was a red jewel, held by carved-wood claws. It looked amazing and Karu was extremely excited. Karu: Thanks Mahl! How can I ever repay you? Mahl: Let me go with you. :) Karu: ?! Mahl: The Northern Continent is changing. My crystal ball has shown fields full of fog...something is wrong. The King ordered me to go there and find out what's happening. Karu: Oh. My friends are there in that fog... Mahl: Yes. Another good reason for going. The fog is artificial...and dangerous. And I suspect that it has something to do with the Metropods. Karu: The Metropods? What would they have to do with the fog? Mahl: I will explain in due course, my young friend. But first, we need to make our way north. Karu: How? :( Mahl smiled and waved his staff in the air. It glowed a bright orange colour. All of a sudden, Karu heard a familiar "Wark!". Standing infront of him was nothing less than a Golden Chocobo. It raised its head proudly, and ruffled its enormous golden feathers. Karu: Wow... Mahl: The Golden Chocobo is the only chocobo which can fly...this is what we shall need to find the North Continent. Karu: Okay...let's go. :) Calya: Will you come back one day? Karu: You can count on it. :) Bye, Calya! Calya: Bye bye Karu! Bye Mahl! Mahl: Bye, Calya. Come on Karu...all you need to do is put your foot up... Mahl helped Karu climb up onto the bird's back. Mahl sat behind him and held the reigns in his hands. The two turned and waved at Calya again, as the enormous bird lifted off from the ground and began soaring into the blue sky beyond the Great Tree of Ephra...

I don't agree with you. Sex education is actually a very important way of preventing STDs and even preventing kids having sex too early. I think that parents should sit down with their kids at a young age and explain frankly why sex at a young age is not appropriate. If you hide the truth from children, they will be more likely to go out and experiment. If you arm children with truth and knowledge, they will make their own judgements and be less likely to do something foolish. Unfortunately, many parents are too foolish themselves -- they are too afraid to discuss issues of sex and drugs and the result is often that one of their children -- lacking knowledge and wisdom on the subject -- end up getting pregnant at 13. It's to-the-point, but very true.

That night, Satoru was woken from his sleep. Denki was standing over him with a finger over his own lips. Denki: Sshh...quiet...now's the time to escape... Satoru: Now?! Denki: Yea...we're gonna pick the lock on the Chocobo Compound on the other side of the yard...and get us a couple of 'em. Satoru: Are you sure that'll work? Denki: Yea! I spent the last year training one of 'em chocobos...we wouldn't be able to do it without that. Satoru: Okay...I got nothing to lose. Satoru quietly sat up and followed Denki out of the building. To Satoru's surprise, there weren't many guards. He assumed that this was because even if someone did escape, they would probably perish in the desert, regardless. Satoru and Denki slipped along the perimeter fence toward the Chocobo Compound. Just as they were only metres from the compound, one of the Corel Prison Guards stepped out and bumped right into Denki. Guard: HEY!! GET BACK TO YOUR CELL IMMEDIATELY!! Denki: SSh!! Quiet! Guard: NO, YOU BE QUIET! GET BACK TO YOUR CELL BEFORE YOU GET IN TROUBLE!!!! EVERYONE, WAKE UP!! THEY'RE TRYING TO ESCAPE!! Denki quickly lunged forward and punched the guard in the face. He immediately fell to the ground and dropped his rifle. But his yelling had awoken several other guards, who were running across the sand towards Satoru and Denki. Denki: Hurry! We ain't got much time!! Denki reached into his pocket and pulled out a lockpick (which as basically nothing more than an old nail). He fiddled with the lock until it popped open. Denki pushed the enormous doors of the cage open and reached into his pocket again. Satoru: What are you doing?! They're getting closer!! Denki: Heheh...dun worry, I got a plan! :D Denki pulled out some greens which he had saved. He threw them towards the oncoming guards. All at once, the Chocobos within the compound scrambled out to get at the greens. At least thirty yellow chocobos were racing towards the greens -- knocking the guards over as they ran. Two chocobos stood still, however. Satoru presumed that these two were the ones Denki had personally trained -- and his presumption was confirmed when Denki said hello to the birds, only to be greeted by an enthusiastic "Kweh!". Satoru awkwardly climbed up on the slightly smaller chocobo, while Denki sat on the larger one. He held out some greens infront of him (and gave some to Satoru for the same purpose) and the two birds began to run from the compound. Satoru held onto his chocob's neck tightly as it ran. Even though he'd never ridden a chocobo before in his life, the feeling was exhilirating. Despite the fact that this was merely a yellow chocobo, he was amazed at how fast it could run. Just as they reached the chickenwire fence, Satoru heard Denki yell out at the top of his lungs "DUCK!"... Satoru did so, and heard a thunderous CRAAASH!! at the same time. Satoru opened one eye and looked back. He realized that the pair had crashed through the fence -- the chocobo-shaped cut-outs (one bigger and one smaller) were a dead giveaway. The two rode off into the cool desert night. Satoru felt free -- even more free than he had felt as the President of Shinra, Inc.

I think it's a shame that younger kids are starting to have sex and experiment with alcohol. On the other hand, I am a big advocate of drug awareness. And I think that we should be teaching kids about drugs during late elementary (or primary) school. Education is really the key when it comes to deterrance -- and if you teach kids what is wrong at a young age, that tends to stick with them.
Originally posted by D. Dark You've missed the point. It is obvious that not all news stories can be covered, since there is not enough manpower or resources. But that is not what I said, as I meant that in a news story some angles might not be told, even though they are all researched. However, I retract my statement that most stories are biased, as they are not. There are many examples of this.
I understand that. And that is why the viewing of multiple media sources is important -- so that any untold aspects of news stories can be read/viewed. This is particularly why the Internet can be such an important tool.
The smartest of us, like you, James, know when news is biased, because you just know.
But you see...that's just not good enough. You can't say "because you just know". You have to provide me with evidence of that. Of course, in each specific case, you can often tell (especially if you have some forethought about that particular media) that it is biased or not. However, media bias isn't always media bias. Media bias is sometimes viewer bias. What do I mean by that? Take Fox News for example, once again. I often hear them talking about the "left-wing, liberal media". Where is this left wing media? So much media today is actually very conservative. This "left wing mass media" just doesn't exist. Thus, on the one hand, they are trying to say that the media is biased to the left...whereas it is actually they who are biased to the right. See what I mean? Viewer bias plays a huge role -- media isn't nearly as biased as many think, rather, people often view media as biased because it might be saying something that they personally disagree with. Thus, that is a case of viewer bias.
But sometimes it can be made so subtle that only the sharpest minds will notice biasim. Many lazy people who do not do a lot of thinking will except the story, as it is easier than concentrating.
I agree -- once again, with Fox News. But frankly, only an idiot will sit there and totally accept everything they are told without question. This is not what I am asking for at all though -- I am saying that an objective viewer should make it their business to make decisions about the news that they see. This is the only way to minimize media bias effectively.
Take for example the film, "Wag the dog". Tell me if you have or have not seen it. If not, I'll explain it to you.
I haven't seen the film, but I'm totally aware of its premise. I'm sorry, but do you take me for an utter moron? lol I'm actually in the media myself, and you're kind of sitting there trying to explain media bias to me as though I'm five years old. lol My answer is yes, I totally understand what you're saying. I am merely pointing out that it is the responsibility of the viewer to ensure that they remain objective and that they make decisions about what they view. A large part of that is reading/viewing media from as many different sources as possible. Anyone with at least half a brain won't be fooled -- bias in media is often pretty easy to detect. I think that to suggest otherwise greatly insults the intelligence of most media viewers. When the media screws up, you can bet that there are always a lot of people there to pick them up on it. So in a way, the media is actually quite a bit more transparent than you might think.
Originally posted by Crazy White Boy I don't know exactly how to interpret this. Does this mean that the affiliation will result in ported classics to the GameBoy Advance rather than new games for the GameCube?
The affiliation will mean a combination of things. Ported classics are probably a given, but there is significant information to suggest that Final Fantasy Unlimited will become available for GameCube/GBA. Remember, even though this deal is focused on GBA, Nintendo have made it very clear that there will be no deal unless GCN is somehow involved. Thus, Square really don't have much of a choice. lol
Originally posted by Jabroni3:16 It's quite obvious that you have not played extended rounds of Halo, if even at all. Once you have you will have a clearer understanding of the superiority of the the X-Box controller.
I've actually had quite a significant level of experience with the Xbox controller (this is the benefit of being involved in gaming media). But moreover, it is important to read articles and analysis so that I can make a well-formed view. I would not judge the controller specifically on my own personal account. Rather, I judge the controller as the general populace judges it. This provides a more accurate view of the objective nature of the hardware.
I do agree with you on the D-Pad, along with the controlls for DOA3, i couldn't get a hold of that controlling style. I must say that the notches in the joy stick do help but they aren't a selling point, when you are into a game you don't care if it is notched or not.
It's not a selling point, but when you're in a game, you certainly do care if it's notched. It is something which will affect gameplay and which will become noticeable (particularly in FPS style games).
After i looked at the Japanese controller, i was in awe of the American version.
Uh...that line alone will cause you to lose a lot of credibility in this discussion lol. I will say, based on that...that you are probably in the 5% minority who actually prefer the Xbox controller to other controllers. It also suggests that you haven't used the Japanese controller ;) And I think it's worth nothing that my comment isn't designed as anything negative, but rather, I'm stating what appears to be a fact. If you actually do prefer the Xbox controller...good for you. ;)
As for placement on the controller, the C-Stick basically refutes your whole opinion. If Retro wants to make Controlls for MP any good at all they are going to have to optimise the C-Stick, Halo controlls come to mind.
The placement of the C-Stick is actually something which the Xbox mimmicks. It's all well and good to say "they're going to have to optimise the control stick"....but how should it be optimised? And what are you referring to when you say "optimised"? You can't just say "they gotta make it better" without telling me specifically what's wrong with it in the first place. Thus, my opinion stands.
In no way do i feel that the buttons on the X-Box controller were placed wrong, that is except for the white and black buttons but i have no idea where they could have been put instead "without the player needing to take his/her thumb off the right stick to press a face button."
Umm...I wasn't talking about the white and black buttons when I said that. But I am saying that the addition of the Z Button at the top of the controller was of benefit to the GameCube. Perhaps Microsoft should have done something similar with the B&W buttons (perhaps one on either side or something *shrug*).
That's right they only have to look for the Z button while a friend fires a rocket up your a**. After reading your message, i realize that you haven't had much experiance with the X-Box controlls, and have been going off of what has been played at stores, read in magazines, and/or played at a friends house who imported one.
Hm, that's totally wrong for a number of reasons. 1) When you are playing the GameCube, your finger only has to move forward slightly to touch the Z-Button. In the case of the Xbox controller, you are often required to "feel around" to find the Black and White buttons. So in actual fact, it is the Xbox where the player will be fumbling around trying to find the right button, while getting a rocket fired up his or her ***. As for the second point, you shouldn't make observations like that without knowing the facts. You're only saying that because my arguments are valid. Read above for my response to it -- I've actually had a broad range of experience and moreover, I do find it important to evaluate a product based on others opinions as well as my own. As I said, this is what will truly provide a well-rounded view. I think it's certainly acceptable that you prefer the Xbox controller, but your somewhat clumsy attempts at putting down the GameCube controller don't really work -- and I think anyone else who reads this topic will be able to see that. I think the real question is, you shouldn't pretend to be objective. Rather, you should just say "this is why I personally think the Xbox controller feels nicer", rather than trying to say that I'm wrong or something like that. Anyway...at the end of the day, there are two real issues here. I think that anyone would say that at least in a design sense (and a conceptual sense) the GameCube controller is far superior. Whilst the Xbox controller is kind of a cliched mess of plastic. However, I would also say that everyone is different and everyone has different tastes (as well as different sized/shaped hands). Thus, prefering one controller over the other won't make that controller objectively better, as it will be more about personal comfort (or staunch hardheadedness).
Originally posted by Raiha Well, in my book...it's not like a RPG at all. It's way too detailed, and the style of writing is very different. So I think it should stay here.
Yeah, I know what you mean. However, you'll notice that a similar topic was closed when this forum was first opened. The general idea is that the Games/RPGs forum is an area where group stories/RPGs and interactive games can be played. You will notice in the Meteo City 2 topic, that Cera often posted in a similar narrative style to the style used in this particular topic. However, this topic was intended for the purpose of static fanstories which could be discussed by other members (either that, or the posting of other stories/poetry which can be discussed). So it's not so much that this is or isn't an RPG -- it's more a matter of the purpose that both forums serve. I'd personally love to see more topics like this in Games/RPGs, as I feel that they lend themselves to better expression than standard RPGs.
Originally posted by Kristoff119 The gba could never handle anything like mario 64 or a 3d zelda because of the ai, the capacity of the cartridges is so small, and those games produce more than a few thousand polygons per second. They would have to have the games span over many cartridges, although mario 64 was only a 64 megabit game, there is still the issue of polygons. I remember telling my friend that they could make a 3d resident evil for the gba almost a year ago, and him saying that it would never be possible.
The GBA could handle either of those games with this engine. Look at that survival horror demo -- it is more detailed than Mario 64 ever was. You could easily port Mario 64 to GBA using this engine...and you could probably even include nicer visuals. Zelda is a different matter -- but mainly due to the controls (it'd be tough to make a 3D Zelda with the GBA controls). But still...it could be done. And it could be great. :)

Um, people...bear in mind that your awaken date can be no later than 04.30.2180. This is the date of the original transmission. Thus, if your awaken date is after this date, you would be awakening after the RPG is finished. lol So please make it sometime before 2180 (in accordance with your character's age, etc)...so if you are 20, you wouldn't have woken at 2130. lol Also please note, the ten items you select are items which will stay with you during the entire RPG. Thus, choose wisely...as they are pretty much all you'll be able to use. ;)

I don't think anyone would deny (anyone who has used both controllers) that the GameCube's controller is superior. I mean let's face it, controller design is really Nintendo's forte in the hardware department. The GameCube controller is ergonomic and can be used for any style of game. I personally feel that it can be used for 2D/3D fighters if the developer chooses an appropriate control method. I mean, though the D-Pad is smaller than that of the Xbox, the Xbox D-Pad is absolutely terrible. Such a fundamental part of 2D fighting games is important. So the D-Pad is one area, but also there is the question of the face buttons. No contest here. The GameCube's face buttons are spaced out and are all different shapes (which means that you never need to look down). Moreover, they are organized in a left/top/right position and angled gently, so as to match the angle of the right thumb. I lay my thumb over the A and Y buttons, I notice that the face buttons are angled exactly for the angle of my hand. Therefore, not only do I not need to look down, but I never confuse one button with another. In the case of Xbox, the buttons are so close together and are at such an awkward angle, that playing a 2D fighter would be an utter nightmare. You'd be constantly slipping and pressing the wrong button. Hyper Magazine even said that the Xbox controller wasn't very suitable for Dead or Alive 3, particularly due to the poor D-Pad and face buttons. In terms of First Person Shooters, I have to say that I think it's probably a tie. Although, I believe that the GameCube controller is ideal for this genre. Why? Simple. If you look at the control sticks, you notice that the plastic hubs which they sit in are grooved so as to provide for an 8-way digital-style direction. Thus, in FPS games (or any games where some level of precise coordination is used), they make it easier for direct movement. Furthermore, the placement of the sticks (as well as their sheer comfrot) mean that movement would be pretty painless. I think that also you have to remember that there are three buttons on top of the GameCube controller, including the L, R and Z buttons. The Z button is less than ideal, but the fact that there are three buttons means that there are more options for the player, without the player needing to take his/her thumb off the right stick to press a face button. I must say though, my judgement of the two controllers isn't necessarily a judgement of the consoles themselves. While I feel that the Xbox controller is possibly the worst controller design of the current generation of consoles, it's certainly not so bad that it's intolerable. Once you get used to it, it is tolerable for most styles of games -- it's just not optimal, that's all. Having said that, Microsoft are planning to release a new optional controller for the American (and let's hope Australian) market. The new controller is more like the Japanese controller, but won't be packaged in with the Xbox console. Microsoft say it is an alternative for those who don't like the main controller. So therefore, if this controller arrives down here...I certainly think that it has the potential to make the Xbox a much more playable and well-rounded console.

As for the WTC documentary...I only saw a little bit of it, as I do'nt know if it was shown here or not...I think it was, but I think I missed it. In any case...when I first saw the WTC being hit (I saw it live), I was in total shock. I continued watching...and when the first tower came down, I was just staring with a tear running down my cheek. It totally flawed me. I've never had such a strong reaction to anything in my life. The idea that someone can be so cruel as to kill so many people like that...and the thought of the pain and sheer terror that those people went through is just impossible to imagine. It definitely demonstrated how brave the firefighters were. Under the circumstances...they knew that the building was on the verge of collapsing (how could you not have known, given the sounds and sights?)...and thus, that is why I assume they went no further. Still, for them to even go into the building when all that debris was falling...it's something that would absolutely terrify me. I don't know how I'd have felt if I were actually there...but I think I'd probably need counseling for a long time after something like that. :(

Now, let's get on with the RPG, shall we? :) Satoru stood up and was about to walk outside when Don stopped him. Don: What'r ya doin'? Satoru: I was going to go outside...I need fresh air... Don: Nuh uh. You gotta change outta that suit first. Do you think you'll last long wearin' those threads out there? Nope. They'll eat ya alive! Satoru: Oh. Okay...where do I get a prison uniform? Don: There's some in the closet over here...lemme get one for ya. Satoru: Okay, thanks. Don walked over to the closet and pulled out a uniform. He handed it to Satoru, who began to change clothes on the spot. Satoru: Why are you looking out for me so much? Don: Well ah...you're new 'ere. And I guess you must be a pretty important prisoner, otherwise they wouldn't 'ave chucked you in 'ere without a trial. People like you get picked on a lot in 'ere...and sometimes it goes further than that... Satoru: Oh. Well...I'm grateful. Don: Heh, 's ok. :) Don led Satoru out of the room and into the large open area of the prison. It was a poor sight -- large fences surrounding a fairly arbitrary plot of land in the middle of the desert. In one corner was a caravan -- the HQ of the Prison Governor...and floating above was the legendary Golden Saucer. Satoru thought it mildly amusing that the Golden Saucer was located above such a pathetic place. Every few hours, the Golden Saucer would dump rubbish over the prison yard, at which point some of the inmates would scramble over the trash and pick out what they could -- basically, anything that was edible, could be used as a weapon, or looked otherwise valuable. Satoru and Don sat down at the edge of the fence. Satoru gripped the fence with his hand, as he looked out hopelessly across the desert. Don put his hand on Satoru's back. Don: 's ok. I know it's hard...but you'll get over it in time... Satoru: Yeah I know. I'm just not used to this... Don: Yea, you seem different. I gotta tell ya somethin'... Satoru: Oh? Don: Yea...ma name isn't Don. It's Denki. Satoru: Denki?! Er...that's totally different from "Don". Why'd you tell me your name was Don? Denki: Well...see, I'm a big guy. And erm...people laugh at my real name if they hear it. :( Satoru: Why do they laugh? Denki: Because back where I come from, Denki is a girl's name. :( Satoru (muffled giggle): Ohh. Well...yeah, I see your point. How come you decided to tell me your real name though? Denki: Well, I like ya. :) Unlike a lot of the scum in 'ere...you seem trustworthy... Satoru: Thanks, Denki. Satoru picked up a nearby stick and began to draw shapes in the sand. He'd never felt more hopeless in his entire life. Denki: So uh, are ya interested in ah...maybe...escapin'? Satoru: Er, didn't you say escape was pointless? Denki: Well yea. But see...I have an escape plan that I been workin' on for a while. Problem is, it's a two man plan...and I haven't found anyone trustworthy enough 'till now. :) Satoru: Oh. Well...okay. It's a deal. I guess I can't get in much more trouble than I'm in now. Denki: Ok. But firs' you gotta tell me somethin'... Satoru: Yeah? Denki: Who are ya really? I know ya didn't wanna really talk 'bout yourself...I could tell that. But I wanna know who ya really are... Satoru: *sigh* I don't know if it's something you can handle...it might make you think differently about me. Denki: Nah. I dun care...I seen every kinda scum you can imagine 'round here...anythin' you say isn't really gonna affect me that much. Satoru: I am Satoru Shinra. Denki: Satoru...Shinra? Satoru nodded and looked at Denki. Satoru: Yes. I am the President of Shinra...or at least...I was, before I was arrested... Denki: Whoa. Satoru: Heh, I thought your reaction would be like that. Denki: So...why would ya be framed if you're the Prez of Shinra? Satoru: I have no idea. I think I know who framed me...but I have no idea how I can clear myself. Denki: Well, how 'bout I help ya...since you agreed to escape 'ere with me... Satoru: Really? You'd do that? Denki: Yah...sure would. :) Satoru: Thanks, Denki. I really appreciate it. Denki: No problem! :D
Originally posted by Voodookanaka i cant really explain, ill just have to hope u can make some sense out of my ramlings.
Okay, yeah...I see your point. But my contention still stands. Certainly, media will always aim its reporting to certain groups of society. Rupert Murdoch owns Fox News -- and he apparently approved the whole "right wing perspective" idea. That is why, when watching Fox News, you see nothing but Democrat/Clinton bashing and very little substantial news. This doesn't mean I'm a huge Clinton supporter, but it does mean that there is a very obvious bias going on there. But having said that, as I stated earlier, it's important to look at multiple news sources if you can. If I watch Fox News and I know that they are biased in favor of Republicans...I can watch their reports and know how seriously to take some of their statements. Also, news is news. The news you get is usually not doctored or changed...but rather, it's more a case of what specific news items are shown or not shown. News is an area where editorializing isn't acceptable. That's why I talk about Fox News -- as they often editorialize their news. I guess what I'm saying is...news itself is often non-biased. It is the editorializing surrounding that news...and the news items that are presented as "important" news items that really make the difference. I see what you're saying, Voodoo...and I agree. But also, I would say that if you are wary of such media bias...it is definitely wise to read as much media as you can, so that you can get a 360 degree view of the news.
Originally posted by D. Dark What I'm getting at, is that usually in important news, the whole tale isn't told by the media, to their own gain...
To some extent that is true. But people are far too negative about the media. Bear in mind also that it is physically impossible to cover all news stories. That is why it is very important for any informed viewer/reader to make sure that they focus on multiple news sources. It's the only way that people can form a truly informed view. Voodoo - I don't think I missed the point at all. Based on what you had said, I was merely saying that it is wrong to be so cynical about the media. It's a damaging state of mind. The media shouldn't necessarily be the "be all and end all" of people's sources for information. Whether or not media is biased isn't the point -- the point is, do you absorb a wide enough range of media and then make your own decisions and form your own thoughts about issues discussed in the news? To imply that we're all sheep who are lead by the TV news or whatever other news is a drastic oversimplification. If that isn't what you were saying, then please explain what you are saying more clearly. :)
