Originally posted by Sephiroth his avatar is the japanese logo for jet grind radio future, a game coming out on the xbox....
Ahh! No, actually, it's the logo for Jet Set Radio on Dreamcast. Heheh. The JSRF logo will be my next avatar...though it has no Japanese text in it (even the Japanese logo). It's pretty funky though, it looks like a barcode.
Originally posted by DuoGod of Death I myself am against it tho. The halogen lights flickered on quietly. Lynd's bed, which was attached to a hydraulic arm, raised up into the air slowly and rotated so that his head was facing the small window, which had been on the right hand side of his bed. The arm slowly lowered and the bed moved back toward the window; the sound of the hydraulic motors quietly humming was the only sound to be heard in the room. The bed stopped and the head rose up higher than the end. Lynd stirred and blinked. He looked around the now brightly lit room. The room was just as he'd remembered it before, only now, the jars with floating organs and the various folders and files had apparently been removed. Opposite to his bed, Lynd could see a white cloth laid out on a counter against the wall. On the cloth, he could see about sixteen or twenty medical instruments. They looked nasty; one instrument consisted of a small tube with three long, tapering blades on the end; another instrument resembled a spoon, but with a vary large, sharp head; the largest instrument on the counter looked like a corkscrew with a small glass bottle attached to the end of the handle. The sight of these cold, metallic objects made Lynd feel sick. Just as he was thinking about what might happen to him, the door opened and a man in a white coat walked in. He made sure to close the door behind him; he pressed his thumb to a plate on the door and it locked with a click. The man walked over to the counter and put down his clipboard and pen; Lynd could hear him scribbling notes on the clipboard. Lynd: What am I doing here? The doctor didn't turn around. He continued scribbling on the clipboard. Lynd: Please...tell me... The doctor turned around and smiled. He walked closer to Lynd's upturned bed. Doctor: You, my dear boy, are part of the Health & Human Services Department's latest experiment. It's all very exciting! Lynd: Exciting? You call abducting an innocent civilian exciting? The doctor grinned and sat down on a nearby chair. He adjusted his glasses, which had slipped down his nose a little. Doctor: Well, you're not exactly innocent, are you? Lynd: What?! Doctor: You were caught stealing from a fruit shop. Dan's fruit shop. I know the owner; he was very pleased that you were caught. You've been stealing fruit from there for months. Lynd: So what? I stole some fruit...who cares? I'm homeless. You can thank your wonderful Government for that! Doctor (laughs): I hardly think that our Government is to blame for your incompetance and lack of morals. This is your own doing. Don't try to blame me. The doctor stood up and walked back over to the counter. He started examining the various medical tools carefully. Doctor: As I mentioned, you are part of one of our greatest experiments. Lynd: What experiment? Doctor: After the hybrid/human war, we were always told that we had to "live in peace" with the hybrids. But c'mon...what human in this would could live beside an animal? We were expected to treat you creatures as equals. It's all politically correct to be friendly and respectful to hybrids these days. Even our mayor is a hybrid! The doctor adjusted his glasses again, and continued speaking... Doctor: But I know that even here, in this very laboritory, our secretary was told to accept a hybrid applicant for a job. Of course, she didn't want to...what self-respecting human would? She was talking to me on the lunch break, telling me how the hybrid woman kept insisting on a job, and how she feared that she was going to be bashed if she didn't accept. The doctor put some of the medical tools in a sterilization bath as he talked... Doctor: These damn hybrids. We've had to live with them for far too long, in my opinion. And I know I'm not the only one who thinks it. Lynd: Then what are you going to do? Kill us all? Hah. Do you really think the public would stand for something like that? Doctor (laughs): No, of course not. We'd be stupid to outright kill the hybrids in the city, as much as I'm sure many of us would love to. Lynd: Then what? Doctor: You're here because you're a criminal. A common criminal. Nobody cares whether you live or die; nobody wants you. Therefore, we can use the hybrid criminals in the city to test our research on. If they die during testing...then so be it. At least that way, they're not a drain on the Meteo City economy. Lynd: You sick bastard... Doctor: Me? Sick? No, no. You're the one who's sick. You and your whole kind. I go out there and I see hybrids marrying humans...and having children of all things! It makes me want to vomit! The hybrids should be gone -- they only make our gene pool less pure...and more dirty. Lynd: No, it's attitudes like yours which make the human gene pool dirty! Doctor (laughs): You can complain all you want, animal. But it's not going to save you or any of your kind. The doctor took his clipboard and walked toward the door, pressing his thumb against the plate again to let himself out. He turned to face Lynd... Doctor: Make sure to get some good rest tonight. Tomorrow morning we'll be taking you to the operating theatre for your first few tests. Enjoy yourself while you can; tomorrow you'll be losing a lot of blood, and you'll be in a hell of a lot of pain. The doctor laughed to himself and closed the door. Lynd could hear it click, as the little light above the handle turned red, indicating that it had been locked. The scariest part was that Lynd didn't care as much now. While he didn't agree with the doctor's philosophies, he knew that the doctor was right in one area: he was a criminal. And he'd never have a bright future. He might as well just die right here in this building for all anyone cared... Lynd closed his eyes...and slowly drifted back to sleep. Almost as soon as his eyes closed, dreams of torture and and test tubes full of blood entered his mind. It seemed to be a taste of things to come.
Originally posted by Crazy White Boy I don't know. I remember reading, I think in the newest EGM(could be wrong) that the Saturn launch was a failure. By releasing it too early, it became totally botched. How would you say that Playstation was miserable at first? Saleswise, you could be right, but I'm referring to game quality rather than sales figures. Granted, it was a wild card system with no credibility, but the initial launch titles weren't so bad. Tekken was easily superior to Virtua Fighter(well, that's based on opinion) and Ridge Racer was more than a match for Virtua Racing Deluxe. I take that back if Daytona was already out at launch though.
Saleswise, the PSX launch wasn't a failure, but it was incredibly flat. And within the first year, the PSX didn't come close to Saturn in terms of sales. Remember -- Sega had just come down from the days of the Genesis, which were huge. The Saturn carried a lot of weight in terms of its branding (which later proved to go down the toilet). As for your game comparisons, I agree that Ridge Racer was better than Virtua Racing Deluxe (even though Daytona and Sega Rally were released soon after, if not on, launch). But in terms of general franchises, Sega had the right combination. At the time, Virtua Fighter 2 had a larger name in the industry. Tekken would, of course, become a bigger title in future years. But after that first year, things went in the opposite direction for both Sega and Sony. Sony started to get the great third party franchises, while Sega started retreating in the other direction. Oh well, as I said, it's a shame that the Saturn's failure tainted the Dreamcast in such a profound way.
Originally posted by felix As for the PSX how many of you remeber the first 6 months of the PSX it wasnt as good as it was once FF VII came out. Once it came out the whole world knew what a PSX was so just give the GBA some time and you will see some truely fun and graphic intensive games on it.
I agree. Although I'd say that the GBA has already hit its stride in a technical sense. It's a truly outstanding little system. I love Golden Sun and I personally think it's as good or better than the SNES Final Fantasy titles. The PSX had a crappy launch. The Saturn, in the first year, was the highest selling console at the time. In fact, in the first year of sales, I distinctly remember the PSX trailing the Saturn's huge sales lead. I remember reading the "top 10" consoles in magazines such as EGM and noticing that Saturn was on top month after month. But when Final Fantasy VII came out (and a few other select titles), the PSX started to leap ahead. Dying third party support (and probably lack of a good Sonic sequel) really screwed the Saturn badly. It's a shame too -- the Saturn's failure helped to kill the Dreamcast, which was actually a brilliant system. Oh well.
Originally posted by Crazy White Boy Yeah, the targeting system in Ocarina was masterful. Heck, even Grand Theft Auto 3 kind of benefited from it, although it still isn't quite up to par to Zelda's. However, I don't know if EGM is strictly bashing ALL high quality games. I think they're mainly biased against Nintendo. I mean, Shoe gave Luigi's Mansion a 5.5! He insinuated that Nintendo didn't concentrate on the gameplay-they concentrated on making it look adorable. Even the aformentioned Wave Race:Blue Strom recieved a 5.5 and 6.0. At least they didn't downplay Grand Theft Auto 3 to further promote Halo and MGS2: Sons of Liberty.
EGM has also bashed a number of non-Nintendo titles, but I do feel that some of their editors have been very anti-Nintendo. I mean, I felt that IGN was harsh in giving Luigi's Mansion a 7.5. I think it deserved around an 8. Although, they were spot on with their Wave Race and Smash Bros. Melee reviews. And when you compare IGN's scores to GameSpot (which are relatively similar), it makes you wonder exactly what EGM's problem is.
Originally posted by Crazy White Boy But people want to beat him up over saying SSBM and MGS2 sucks? Those are his opinions, it doesn't mean he should be beaten over them.
I agree with you there. People's opinions are just that; opinions. However, I also think that even objectively speaking, people can be wrong. I mean, when Ocarina of Time first came out, it was revolutionary in many ways. It redefined the way that 3D games were to be played. If someone had bashed the game at the time, then even objectively, they would have been wrong. Having said that, it's fine to point out small flaws (such as some of the extremely low-res textures on some of the walls), that's totally forgiveable. But EGM has been bashing a lot of high quality games in a very broad-based way lately. It's really made me lose a lot of respect for them.

Lynd pretended to be asleep. He could hear talking in the corridor outside his room. His ears twitched as he strained to hear the voices... ???: How is the patient, nurse? Nurse: He's doing just fine, doctor. Doctor: Good. We'll let him rest tonight. But tomorrow morning, I want you to prepare him for surgery. Nurse: Certainly, doctor. May I ask doctor...uhh, what you'll be doing with him? Doctor: Oh nothing major. We'll just be performing a number of tests on him, in order to determine exactly what percentage of him is animal. I'm sure it will be very beneficial research for the residents of Meteo City. Nurse: Oh. Okay then, doctor. See you tomorrow morning then. Doctor: Yes, see you tomorrow. The nurse clearly had no idea what the doctor's true plans were. Lynd knew that he had to find out what was going on, if he was to survive. He managed to use his claws to open the straps on his torso. He then leant down and opened the straps on his feet. Still rubbing his sore forehead, Lynd sat up on the hospital bed. He looked around the room and noticed a folder full of documents sitting on a desk nearby. Lynd carefully stood up, being careful not to fall over, and made his way to the desk. He sat down on the chair by the desk and opened the folder. Right away, these documents were worrying. The first document read: METEO CITY HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICE DEPARTMENT STUDY OF HYBRID GENES REPORT - 2010 EDITION Lynd flipped through the heavy document and noticed several disturbing lines... "Studies have demonstrated that hybrid genes lead to an increase in criminal activity and immoral behavior. Therefore, the Health & Human Services Department of Meteo City has undertaken a ten year plan to purify the gene pool of the city, thus reducing crime rates and improving the health and welfare of normal citizens." Normal citizens. Lynd had never thought of himself as normal -- always second class. Even hybrids which held high-ranking positions in the Meteo City Government didn't seem to know that this report existed, or that the Health & Human Services Department was undertaking measures which would threaten at least half of the city's population. But the mayor of Meteo City was himself, a hybrid. This didn't make any sense to Lynd. Why would the Government of Meteo City be trying to remove hybrid genes from the population? The report seemed to indicate that there was a plan to completely eradicate the "hybrid menace" within a ten year period. If that was the case, then why was Lynd here in this room? What were they going to do with him? And more importantly, was this actually a Government building he was in? If what Lynd suspected was true, then Meteo City's own Government was terribly corrupt. Lynd knew that he would have to do something to stop this situation from going any further. But Lynd didn't have the time to ponder the situation anymore -- he heard footsteps approaching. Lynd quickly got up from the desk and jumped back into bed, reattaching the straps and pretending to fall asleep. The door opened and the doctor who's voice Lynd had heard earlier walked in. He approached Lynd's bed and checked the various instruments which were laying on the table beside the bed. Doctor: Ahh, my specimen. You're going to do great things for me, Lynd. I can feel it. You and I are going to wipe out all the hybrid scum in the city and I will be in line for one hell of a promotion. The doctor leaned down over Lynd. Doctor (whispering): I can't wait 'till the day when I don't see anymore of your kind on the street. You...things sicken me to the core. I can't wait to operate on you and find out what makes you tick... The doctor laughed quietly and walked out of the room, closing the door on his way out. Lynd turned his head to one side, gazing out the window. He didn't know what would become of him, or of his beloved city. All he knew was that he would go down fighting -- they'd never take him alive.
Originally posted by Crazy White Boy Shenmue was the first game to create "the living world." That's how you can compare them. Halo, though is not just another first person shooter. Crank up the difficulty and prepare yourself for masterful A.I. It's the feel of that game that makes it so special.
lol, yes I realize that. I was merely pointing out that I can compare Halo to GTA3 as much as you can compare GTA3 to Shenmue. Halo is just another FPS. Granted, it has slightly improved A.I., but it demonstrates very little innovation. People put this game up on a high pedestal when it clearly doesn't deserve a perfect 10 (although scoring an 8 or 9 would be passable). I was merely saying that GTA3 demonstrates a broader scope in design. And it appears that most gaming publications would agree with me -- GTA3 has been rated more than once as "Game of the Year" for 2001. Doesn't mean Halo is bad as such, just means that GTA3 is more inventive.
-
Originally posted by Crazy White Boy I agree. Comparing Halo and GTA3 is like comparing apples and oranges. The closest you can come is to compare GTA3 to Shenmue. And the question begs to be asked, "Do you really want to talk about Shenmue?"
You can certainly compare these games, but it depends what you're comparing. I'm saying that GTA3 demonstrates far more innovation and creative vision, while Halo is "just another FPS". I don't think anyone would argue with that point. However, I don't think that you can compare GTA3 to Shenmue at all (at least, only as much as GTA3 to Halo). These are two very different games.

Lynd was a hybrid. While hybrids, for the most part, were able to live peacefully alongside humankind, there were a select few which were constantly getting into trouble with the law. Lynd was one of these hybrids. When he was only 10 years old, his mother had been killed by MCPD officers in cold blood. At the time, he was too young to understand why and now, at the age of 27, that memory seemed thousands of years old... Lynd had never known his father and thus, had lived on the streets of Meteo City since his mother died. But tonight was a very different night, a night which would change his life forever... Lynd flattened himself against the wall of the fruit shop. He looked nervously in both directions, his ears twitching. He was a strange hybrid, perhaps more animal than human. His long, reddish-brown ears twitched from side to side, preparing to alert him to the presence of danger... He carefully peered around the side of the wall and saw two MCPD officers talking by the fruit stand. One of them was tall and wiry looking, while the other was short and round. Short Cop: I'm amazed that we haven't had more trouble tonight...being New Year's and all. The tall cop patted his forehead with a handkerchief, he had spent the entire night confiscating liquor from underage drinkers and as a result, he smelled like he'd been drinking for weeks on end. Tall Cop: Speak for youself! Those damn kids...no respect for authority. *sigh* Oh well, it seems like the place is clearing up. Most of the kids have gone home... Short Cop: Yeah, you look pretty run down...how about a coffee? Tall Cop: Sure thing! But let me take this jacket off, it smells disgusting... The two cops laughed and walked down the street and around the corner, out of view. Now was his chance. Lynd reached down and puts his hands on either side of his sneakers. These sneakers had been given to him by a friend, and they had been invaluable to Lynd. He placed his index fingers up against the sides of the sneakers, and sat them inside shallow grooves. The grooves proceeded to glow bright green for just a moment and then they emitted a quiet "beep". Lynd stood up again and closed his eyes -- it was important to concentrate if the sneakers were to work properly. Within seconds, Lynd's body started to dissappear. He raised his right hand and saw only thin air -- the shoes had worked. Very slowy, Lynd crept past the front window of the fruit store. He bent down and opened his jacket. He then started scooping fruit from the stand into his jacket pocket -- quietly, so as not to alert suspicion. When he had finished stealing the fruit, Lynd slowly crept back to the dark alley to the side of the store. He reached down and tapped his sneakers once more, which flashed red momentarily. He was now visible again. But just as Lynd turned to walk down the alley from which he came, a dark figure stepped out infront of him. Dark Man: Ahh, so there you are Lynd. Lynd: What? Get out of my way! Lynd pushed at the dark figure, who didn't move at all. The dark figure reached into his pocket and pulled out a small tube of glowing purple liquid. Lynd: W-what's that? What are you doing?! Dark Man: Sshh, this might hurt a little... The dark figure popped the cap of the tube and squeezed it. The glowing purple liquid sprayed all over Lynd. Lynd: Agghh!!! Lynd howled in pain and dropped the fruit from his coat. He sunk to his knees on the ground, feeling around with his hands; he couldn't see. All Lynd could remember in the moments after the meeting with the stranger was the pain in his eyes and the cold, damp texture of the pavement in the alleyway... Slowly, the blurriness faded and Lynd could see. He was strapped down to a bed, at the end of a small, white room. All the curtains had been drawn except for those on the window closest to his bed. Red light streamed in through the glass from the security light on the building opposite. Lynd's head ached...he couldn't move or talk... He lifted his head weakly and peered around the room, squinting to get a better view of his dark surroundings. What he saw horrified him; diagrams of hybrids who's bodies had been taken apart for experimental surgery, photographs of young hybrid children wearing all sorts of harsh, metallic contraptions and perhaps most horrific of all, the head of a young hybrid boy sitting in a glass jar at the end of the room, preserved with a clear liquid. If Meteo City had a dark underbelly, this was certainly it. What had he stumbled upon? Who was doing this to the hybrids and what could they possibly hope to achieve? Lynd heard talking in the corridor next to his room. He pretended to be asleep as he heard the whole thing, in its gruesome entirety... (Uh, I got a bit carried away there lol. I hope that's not too long...someone can pick up from this if they want. Rico, if this doesn't fit in with the story at all...that's okay, I can edit it or something. Hopefully someone can continue this scene) :)
Originally posted by Crazy White Boy While Devil May Cry is a wonderful example of what the Playstation 2 can do technilogically when in the right hands, it is in no way innovative. I feel that that is the game's biggest flaw besides the sub par voice acting. Don't get me wrong, I think the game deserves accolade, and is brilliant in how it is brought together. However, I beat it in six hours and haven't played it since. I believe that something along the lines of Grand Theft Auto 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, or Final Fantasy X are superior products due to deeper gameplay.
I think that DMC is innovative in terms of its controls and movement systems...you can see that Capcom has focused the game on these areas -- in an effort to create a very arcade-style "twitch" video game. I'm happy about this return to old-school values in game design. Games like Super Monkey Ball, which only use the GCN's analog stick...yet are very deep and engaging, are absolutely brilliant. This is where games need to focus their energies -- fantastic control and addictive gameplay. I personally recommend DMC, but I agree with CWB in the sense that FFX and MGS2 are superior titles.

Anywho, I don't kno what ur reading, but the magazine (egm) that I am reading gives Metal gear solid 2 a higher rating than GTA3, which is why i hav mgs2 and are not so wild about gta3. Halo, then again, was rated a perfect 10 out of 10, beating mgs2's 9.5. I hear that Halo is an amazing game that never gets old, but that's an opinion. I really wish that i had gta3 and play halo so I could tell for myself. But as it goes, i m going off what other ppl rated it. Oh well.
God knows what EGM was smoking when it reviewed Halo. I'd be giving Halo around 7.5 out of 10. Although I know that a lot of gaming websites have been questioning the sanity of EGM's editors lately...they are giving the most bizarre scores. They came down heavily on Wave Race: Blue Storm because of its learning curve...but I consider a stronger learning curve to be a good thing, in today's world of rehashes and incredibly short games.
