My god, how can some of you choose Super Monkey Ball as being worse than Simpsons Road Rage?! SMB is a hard game...sure, but it's very awesome...lots of challenge. Squashed Snail, you wouldn't have played it yet would you? You shoulda voted for Simpsons Road Rage instead. Once you try SMB...I'm sure you'd like it ;)
Originally posted by Crazy White Boy I Just thought I'd clear up what I meant in change of art style. I was referring to the fact that Akira Toriyama was no longer doing character designs. Although the new character drawings were pretty bad, they did not affect my opinion of the game. However, be it on message boards or what not, there were many people(nit pickers) who would constantly bring this up.
I know what you mean, but I didn't find the new designs bad at all. It's obviously difficult to compare old 2D sprites to modern 3D renderings, though. In terms of style, there isn't a huge difference. The newer designs weren't so suddenly terrible that they warranted a lot of complaint...I really do agree that you would be nit picking to include this as any major point.

Hey, great pic, Dragon Warrior! :) It's awesome to see so many budding artists here at OtakuBoards.com. Adam and I are always really keen on seeing people's work. We'll soon have somewhere for everyone to submit all their art (even if it's not game or anime related). So sit tight and keep all those drawings. :)
Originally posted by DuoGod of Death ....Well yeah I suppose you are right...hm...Its just it seems like lately a TON of threads have been closing...all tho that may be a good thing...*shrugs* Well I guess you are right James...You win again...Heh...
That's only because there's been a ton of crappy topics in GD lately. But I'm quite happy with G&S actually, the topics themselves are rarely spam...but often, people create a really awesome topic only to have some idiot spam it up for 'em. So we try really hard not to close whole topics, it's preferable to delete specific posts than whole topics if possible.
Originally posted by Crazy White Boy However, Chrono Trigger actually scored higher on EGM's top 100 games by exactly ten spots. I feel that most Chrono Trigger purists were so disappointed by the change in art design, central characters, and dimensional travel, that they dismissed it. There is no doubt that Chrono Cross will forever be the more forgettable game and that's because of change. Even if it's combat system was superb, it's endings numerous, it's vast set of characters brilliant, and its secrets plentiful. As for FFX, the sphere grid is awesome, and I really do like the change. As I said, Tomb Raider is a prime example of what a lack of change will do. However, you must even be concerned over the stronger emphasis on cinematic approach. I have a feeling that the replay value will plummit.
I doubt that cinematics will lower play value, given that Final Fantasy X has more real-time cinema than any of the previous "modern" games. I think a lot of people unfairly bash FMV. Final Fantasy's FMV enabled the creators to accurately depict epic situations...and to tell stories with great emotion. I think that FFVIII would have been a LOT worse without FMV, because the FMV provided the kind of freedom to allow for creative storytelling sequences. I've always thought of Final Fantasy as a kind of "interactive novel". Even in the old games, there was technically no more interaction than there is now. Even then, you still had characters standing around talking for ages... So really, I think that Square is finding ways to improve interactivity (ie: Blitzball). As for the CC/CT thing, I have no doubt that CC was actually the better game. However, despite what people will tell you, the only reason that CC was more forgettable, was because it was the newer game. CT has a certain level of nostalgia attatched to it (especially since it was on a Nintendo console). And I think that people have fond memories of older games...but sometimes they forget that objectively speaking, the newer game might actually be better. And the change in art style...well...there really was no change as such. The game moved into 3D...but it wasn't a dramatic change in style. In fact, many of the locales in CC are very reflective of CT environments. So I actually felt quite a strong design correlation between the two.
Originally posted by DuoGod of Death James, just a thought...Not attacking you or anything...so please don't get mad...Well 1) Something such as Otaku Social can be considered an RPG if played right...If someonee posted..."I am hungry" thats not an RPG, but if say someone said" George: *walks into a bar* Hey bartender gimme a martini! *grabs the martini and walks to Susie* Hey Susie how ya doing...wanna dance?" That would be considered RPG...2) We don't really have an idle chat in G/D it seems that alot of them are deleted saying they are not coherent....Well where do we talk about our normal lives if they are not bad situations?? I don't know..just a thought...I mean no disrespect... Granted all those threads were taking up space..And thats why I think Otaku Social is such a great idea...We have our own tiny little world..I mean there is even a map...If you think about it, it is just like an RPG... And since it is a sticky...we won't have people keep making them...Like "Dating Game CONT." Or something..because the first one was deleted...
My primary problem with these threads is that they get so large that it becomes difficult to control spamming (which is also annoying for people who post legitimately in those threads). However, I am confident that the moderators of this forum will follow the topic page by page to make sure that it remains relevant. As for your comment about GD, I disagree with you there. We don't close idle chat topics, rather, we close topics which have either no point, which repeat things that are constantly talked about over and over...or which are offensive/inappropriate. Thus, there is more than enough room for all kinds of chat in GD. It just requires a little thought when posting. :)

I personally think that a "Social Otaku" thread is kind of contradicting what we're trying to achieve here. I mean, we're talking about deleting the pointless stuff. The bar topics, the dating topics...topics where people are just talking or posting pointless rubbish. General Discussion is the place for idle chat...not Games & Stories. In the forum description, it is specifically stated: a place for you to share your fan stories or to play games. Now for the most part, the RPGs in here are excellent...and I'm very proud of the overall quality of many of the RPGs in this forum when compared to other sites. But those topics such as the Padded Room Party are just garbage. They are nothing but pointless, mindless crap posted again and again...and really, that kind of thing can be done away from the boards. But with stories and RPGs, there's a chance to really have something which at least has a point lol. Anyway...we'll see how it goes. I don't see that we need a "crack down" on spam as such, as the moderators in this forum should technically have been "cracking down" on spam from the very beginning. I'd like to see that attitude continuing on a constant basis. :)
Originally posted by kizu Hey Rico the Panasonic Q thing is what I have. And what do I need then for it to play my American Software if I don't need a mod chip. And I already have it so I can't just order one that has been fixed. So what do I do. Just wait until they come out with mod chips or another kind of chip that will translate it???
Okay, Kizu. Here are your options: 1. Try to get your Q modified (chipped) by someone in America. You'd probably have to go to some backyard, underground dude tho lol...I don't know if you can send your Q in to an actual company or anything. 2. Sell your Q on Ebay and use the money to buy an American GameCube. 3. Import Japanese games for the rest of your life. That's just about all you can do, really. I suggest that you sell your Q on Ebay or privately...you may even receive enough money to buy an American GCN and a game as well :)
Originally posted by Crazy White Boy I don't know. A lot of you rpg fans say you'd stick with Final Fantasy despite the changes, but there's something in the back of my mind that challenges this. I remember a game(you might have heard of it) called Chrono Cross. You know, sequel to the hit rpg Chrono Trigger? Well, the gameplay, artistic style, and main characters were changed, and it never received the same high accolades as Chrono Trigger.
Actually, Chrono Cross received just as much praise (if not more) as Chrono Trigger. IGN, for one, scored it a perfect 10. And IGN don't score on a whim. Having played both Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, I can safely say that CC was much better than CT. In many ways, it continued some of the core elements of the original, at the same time, it was far more unique than the Final Fantasy series. I think that it was a great way for Square to experiment with different concepts. The only reason it didn't sell very well was, simply, it wasn't one of those publicly recognized games. But neither was Chrono Trigger, in a sense. Final Fantasy has a huge name...huge advertising. The Chrono series really never had that. Chrono Cross was really far more innovative/beautiful/creative than Final Fantasy...and in particular, I loved the soundtrack. As for changes in FF...I think that Square hasn't changed enough. I'm glad that FFX contains more fundamental changes than has been seen in previous games. Final Fantasy VII was really my favourite. It's combination of awesome plot and memorable characters made it better overall than FFVIII or FFIX. FFIX was, in terms of story and characters, the weakest in the modern series. It's visual style however, was awesome. As was it's translation. Final Fantasy needs to undergo change in order to prevent it from being stagnant. I'm not worried about change -- I welcome it, provided that it's warranted. I mean, it's useless to change something good and put something bad in it's place...but it's important to improve on as many areas as possible. As I mentioned in my thread, FFX is Hironobu Sakaguchi's (the FF creator) last Final Fantasy game. But even FFX includes much new talent (particularly in the area of music), and I feel that this fresh talent, combined with the staples of great game design, will make Final Fantasy XI and XII very memorable games. I don't think anyone needs to be worried about Final Fantasy changing though, it's for the better. Anyway...just wanted to throw my thoughts out there. By the way, what would you guys think if Otaku Media made a Final Fantasy site? Do you think it'd be worth making? :)

Actually, it would have been smarter to import a pre-modded Japanese GameCube. Pre-modded Japanese machines can play North American games as well as Japanese ones. :) It's very unadvisable to import a game console unless it's modded, or unless you plan to purchase Japanese games for the rest of your life.
Originally posted by Will2x okay since you need everything to be perfect to answer something then here. 1.Let's face it, Xbox (and even PS2 to some extent), are not game machines. Response:{actually they are, do they not play games, were they not built for hardcore gaming?}
They play games, but that doesn't make them purebred gaming machines. If you were to ask Sony or Microsoft about their systems, they'd tell you that their machines are "Computer Entertainment Systems", thus, they are designed to bring together a broader range of entertainment. Based on this definition, they are not "hardcore" gaming machines, as they are not soley focused on gaming.
2.Do I want to rip CDs to make MP3? Sure, I'll use my PC. Response:{not everyone has a pc or mp3 player, or probly cannot afford a pc or something and this is why this is good.}
That's a good point, but once again, it gets back to my original issue. The question is, are you using your Xbox for PC-related purposes, or for gaming?
3.Do I want to surf the 'net? Sure, I'll use my PC. Response:{ not everyone has a pc}
That's true, but there are a few problems here. Firstly, studies have shown (as has corporate experience), that people generally don't want to surf the 'net on their TV. Why? Because a TV cannot support the kind of high resolutions that a PC monitor can and thus, TV's are inferior for 'net surfing. You also have to consider the Xbox's target market. Most Xbox users (I'd say over 90%) will own a PC as well.
4.Do I want to watch DVD movies? Sure, I'll use my DVD player. Response:{before ps2 i didnt have a dvd player of my own, thanks to sonys bright idea i now have one}
Yes once again, that's true. But as I've said before...from Sony's standpoint, this means a dilution of their market for software. It means that the PlayStation 2, rather than competing with games only, is now also competing with DVD movies. Also, by cramming DVD player functions into PS2, Sony has to some extent glossed over what it could truly have done with the gaming portion of the PS2's hardware. For example, take a look at the difficulty of programming, or the many hardware bottlenecks. Had Sony not included a DVD movie option, they could have spent more time and money improving the gaming hardware (which is better for so-called "hardcore" gamers).
5.My point is, moving into this cloudy area of product positioning is very dangerous for Microsoft and also for Sony(!!). Response:{it only gets better, not dangerous, they are making lots of money}
That comment shows your complete lack of understanding of the videogame industry. Don't make comments if you don't understand what you're saying. In truth, it doesn't get better. It will be especially dangerous for Microsoft, as MS doesn't even publish DVD movies, while Sony is to some extent involved in movie publishing. Microsoft is opening up the Xbox to outside competition, competition which would otherwise not be there. Thus, it doesn't equal more money, it equals less money.
6.Moreover, if a particular product can perform a number of functions at once, it is most likely, by very definition, that it will do all of those functions very well...but not as well as a machine which is designed specifically for one function (ie: GameCube and game playing). Response:{that is not true, it actually depends on the power of the system to do this functions, for example dreamcast doesnt have anything other than cd and ps2 has cd and dvd but ps2 is better. just because gamecube only plays game doesnt mean thats the best thing it can do, it just means its the only thing it can do}
Once again, completely incorrect. It has nothing to do with power. Each game console was designed for specific purposes. You have to understand the design philosophy that's gone into GameCube, as opposed to Xbox and PS2. The two latter consoles were designed as "home entertainment centers", while the GameCube was designed from the ground up as a gaming-only device. The inclusion of proprietary storage media (the GCN optical disc format), means that Nintendo will also not suffer from piracy as Microsoft and Sony will. Thus, the GameCube is undoubtedly superior in terms of sheer gaming. Sure, GameCube won't have 'net functionality for a while, and it isn't for people who want their consoles to play movies and music. But if you're buying a game system to play movies, you're not a hardcore gamer. Gamers themselves (the hardcore variety), will appreciate the fact that the GameCube is built soley for games, meaning that it is also best suited for gaming.
7.Every one of the next gen consoles can produce beautiful graphics which are very comparable to each other. Graphics simply isn't part of the argument. Response:{if your saying graphics do not matter than you are wrong, it makes up into a complete system, graphics have a very important role. games like ff7- wouldnt be able to do alot of things if it had gameboy graphics}
 You're right, but you're missing my point. Firstly, the difference in terms of graphics between the three next gen systems is VERY small. Thus, only those with technical knowledge, or those with good eye for detail will notice any differences. Those who I would consider fanboys (or even the "casual gamer"), are people who would worry about graphics. As a game player, I'm sure you know that great graphics don't make a great game. But this argument is irrelevant, because as I said, the difference in visual performance between the three next gen consoles is absolutely tiny. Thus, graphics doesn't come into the argument at all.
im the kind of person that doesnt jus sit back and belive whatever someone has to say is true, so this is why i responded. oh and if that definition is true then i am defently not a fanboy, now if you actually read what i said in the post before i said i learned up on xbox and im not buying it because its made by microsoft.
 No, I never said that you want an Xbox because it's made by Microsoft. It's fine to want an Xbox over a GameCube or PlayStation 2, I am merely saying that you should never try to say that one system is better than another when you have no facts or proof. Instead, you've thrown out a lot of fanboy-based tripe. If you don't want me to think of you as a fanboy, you are advised not to make fanboyish arguments.
i may not work for a magazine, or stalk nintendo/microsoft workers but i know enough about xbox and gamecube to know which is better. now if you knew as much about xbox as you know about gamecube then you would know the true victor....
How very clever of you. :rolleyes: In all truth, from what you've said, you actually know very little about either Xbox or GameCube. I know a great deal about Xbox -- far more than you. Thus, I am in a better position to know which is better. However, I'm not trying to argue which is better or worse. I will most likely buy an Xbox AND a GameCube in future. The whole reason I'm bothering to discuss this with you, is because I am sick and tired of seeing people spit out absolute garbage to argue for their system of choice. No one system is the best, and if you're going to try and argue that one is better than another, at least use relevant, intelligent arguments which are based on real information and facts. I don't think I need to waste my time arguing with you when you clearly know very little about the next gen consoles. You're free to talk about gaming -- just don't engage in a debate like this when you have nothing relevant to say, because you know I'll catch you out.

When you first came here, I liked you...I thought you were a cool guy. But now all you do is complain like an old woman. lol I mean, in that announcement thread for Absolute Zelda...your post was totally worthless...it's like, if you haven't got anything good to say...don't say it at all. If you hate these boards so much (as you seem to), then why are you still here? *sigh* ok, this is relatively off topic...but I'm sick and tired of seeing your posts get more and more stupid as time goes on. All you do is alienate the people who like you...people like me who thought you were okay once, but now I'm so used to reading sarcastic/stupid posts that I just don't know anymore... Anyway, that aside... I think it's been a pretty good year. I'm glad that those "hackers" decided to go after OtakuBoards 2.0...it motivated us to move to 3.0, which is far better.
What makes a fanboy? A fanboy is someone who blindly follows a product without having any facts to back up their belief. That makes you a fanboy. I couldn't answer all of your comments simply because you didn't make out a seperate post...instead, you edited a quote. I didn't have the time to go through and pick out little parts. If you want to restate your opinions in a post though, I'd be more than happy to respond. Your post indicated that Microsoft was making lots of money with Xbox. You said nothing specific of PlayStation. I write for a gaming magazine. It's my job to know the industry. What I say may not be to your tastes, but it's the truth. I am speaking totally objectively: I am quite prepared to point out the faults of any company, whether it be Microsoft with its philosophies behind Xbox, or Nintendo with its constant unwillingness to embrace the third party scene. Take your pick. I can comment objectively about anything related to gaming. The fact is, I'm not scared of answering anything you have to say because I know that I can be 100% objective. But you, like many on these boards (Nintendo and MS fans alike), are unable to accept objective facts. Aside from that, I don't care which console you prefer. It's totally fine to prefer Xbox to GameCube, however, when you go around stating facts which you claim are objective...make SURE that they are correct. If I am stating my opinion, I will say so. But if I'm stating an objective fact, I gurantee that I can back it up with information every single time. I urge you to do the same, otherwise it's totally pointless to debate if you either can't be objective or can't face facts.

I don't think I'd support attacking him...but I know how you feel. Have you sat down quietly with your mother and discussed it? I guess...even though he's cheated on her, she still loves him...and that's why she stays with him. It's a tough situation...if I were ever cheated on...I'd like to say that I'd dump the person straight away, but it may be harder to do that than I can even imagine. I don't think anything any of us says will really help you...but I think that you have to try as best you can not to make it harder on your mother. If he comes over and you fight or argue...that'd make it more difficult for her to cope with. You have to respect the fact that your mother can make her own choices...and try your very best to avoid her partner if you can when he's over (which I know is very difficult anyway). But other than that, I think all you can really do is talk to her about it...and explain your feelings...and see what she does. In the meantime, we're all here for you if you ever need to talk. :)

Noryko: I see your point about camera, but remember...nobody has ever really tried to create a living-breathing city on this scale before. It may seem easy to make a gun point out of a window and shoot...but to design an accurate/acceptable camera mechanic, as well as creating the sheer physics, is incredibly difficult. I'm surprised that DMA Design managed to pull off the game without too many major problems. Hopefully this means that other developers can look at their work and take the "real living city" idea a step further in future, especially with the more capable GameCube and Xbox.
Originally posted by Will2x ok i fixed your post! read it
I'd have preferred if you'd answered each quote seperately, rather than editing a quote. This makes it difficult for me to reply to specific points. But most of the edits you made were totally incorrect. The Xbox games shown thusfar feature exactly zero innovation. This doesn't mean that they never will -- there are quite a few games on the horizon which I'm looking foward to. I was just talking specifically about the current situation. As for all the other stuff, you were very wrong there. Microsoft is making no money from Xbox right now. So I don't know how you can say that they're making a lot of money. Infact, Microsoft will be making losses on Xbox until around 2004/2005. Will, if you want to have a serious discussion, you need to do two things. 1. Reply to each paragraph or each point seperately, rather than editing an entire quote. This makes it incredibly difficult to accurately reply. 2. Get your facts right. I'm sick of fanboys like you making up facts and throwing them out on the table. Nothing about my post was fanboyish -- I was stating cold, hard facts. Those facts might be negative, but as I said, I was talking about the current situation. People defend the Xbox (or GameCube or PS2) simply because they own them. But in actual fact, they aren't necessarily qualified to argue certain points. Either they don't know the facts, or they hide the facts to further their own viewpoint. I will not tolerate this fanboy crap. If you want to debate the issue, please make it easier for a discussion to be made.
Yasumi Matsuno's takeover of executive production is a mild concern. I could compare disasterous turns for series' when others take over, such as in the Twisted Metal series and Crash Bandicoot. However, I don't think it's all that drastic. Final Fantasy has always been a huge team effort, and the same company will still be making it. I'm sure that Matsuno will do Sakaguchi proud. Well, that's it for my tangant.
Well, there are considerable differences between Final Fantasy and Twisted Metal, in the sense that Twisted Metal went to an entirely different development studio. Final Fantasy X is still being produced by Square's internal studios and many of FFX's designers were responsible for programming and various other aspects of older games. Matsuno-san's expertise should really help the Final Fantasy series in the future, as he has been responsible for some of Square's most unique games in the past. Final Fantasy XI is already looking stunning. It's design is similar in many respects to the earlier FF games on the SNES console, but in 3D. I'm looking forward to seeing this game and in particular, I'm looking forward to seeing how Square will implement storytelling with an online "real" world. (Sorry for deleting your post, CWB. I accidently clicked "edit" rather than "quote" and thus, it screwed up. You can repost your original post if you want to).
Originally posted by Sephiroth strong news leaked out of square about them re-making ff7/8 and possibly 9 on the ps2, yes, I did get this from a reliable source, and so far they have never let me down....
Yes, Square confirmed this information some months ago. Although I don't believe that they stated exactly what they were doing with these games... however, I've heard rumors which suggest that they would be putting FFVII, VIII and IX on one single DVD and that they'd ship with enhanced visuals and extra secrets. Talk about the ultimate Final Fantasy collector's item ;)
