DOES IT REALLY MATTER IF PEOPLE USE COMMON WORDS DOES IT EVEN EFFECT US?
Well if you're not going to shut up, YES, it "effects" me because it pisses me off when I hear them and people don't even understand what they're saying. Therefore I am affected.

I guess I should've made this a bit clearer in my original post... This thread wasn't about just words that are overused, because there are plenty of those. I was thinking more along the lines of "buzzwords", you know? "Conformist" was a good one I didn't think of. Basically, just words that lots of people are using lately because they're "in" or something. Like with the example of "insecure". This gets tossed around between people who think they're psychology majors. So you know, without really knowing what peoples' problems are, they're quick to slap this "insecure" label on them because it makes them look smart and they've been hearing it lately. Does that make more sense? You can apply similar examples to my other words and some of the others already suggested here.

Lately I've noticed a few words that are commonly spewed forth from the mouths of those who don't really understand them. It's mostly dumbasses who use these words in order to appear intelligent, when usually it has just the opposite effect. Here they are. close-minded Boy does this get tossed around like a cheap whore during debates. You have to wonder if people even realize what it means anymore. Any disagreement on the internet is undoubtedly due to one person being "close-minded". Liberals are particularly fond of this word, since we all know every conservative is close-minded. mature This one is used mostly amongst high/middle schoolers. Because in this time, these people actually are in the process of maturation. However some of them are in absolute denial, and believe they matured sometime around the age of 5, so they must be like a 40 year old now that they're 12. As shown by several threads around here, most people believe they act like 18 year olds, who, contrary to popular belief, usually act like 10 year olds. Let's face reality here: we're all acting our age. insecure Every bully in the world is insecure. If you've been paying attention, you know this is most likely due to their "immaturity". Anyone who has ever made fun of anyone else is simply insecure. That's all that come to mind currently, there are plenty more I haven't thought of.
But where Gibson seemed to fail is with the story. People can flame me all they want, lol, but there really is no story to Passion. It's really just two straight hours of violence, right?
Two straight hours of violence? Neither of us have seen it, so I wouldn't jump to such a conclusion yet. I would have went today but it was sold out. Gibson didn't write the story and therefore he doesn't fail with it. These events occured thousands of years ago (2004 to be precise). So everyone knows what's going to happen. There's no need to build suspense or anything; we KNOW He's going to be crucified. The story has already been told millions of times. But now it's in visual form. The movie is based on a historical account and from what I have heard, Gibson is sticking to what actually happened. He's not going to add things in that would make it more entertaining if they didn't happen. If characters are undeveloped, maybe it's because there isn't a lot of actual historical information on them. He could fill in the blanks with his imagination I'm sure, but then that wouldn't be historically correct. That's what he's going for (from a religious perspective).

Ganging up on one person bites.
wrist cutter replied to Farto the Magic's topic in General Discussion
Good thing this is a message board on the internet. If for some reason we were all in the same place talking instead, I'd be afraid to be around some of you. It seems like some of you have some anger problems, judging by the fact you're getting violent over NAME-CALLING. Seriously. In my entire school career, I've never gotten in any sort of fight (verbal or physical), I've never been "picked on", I've never been the target of a bully, I've never been a bully, or any of that stuff. It makes me wonder just what you people are doing that YOU are being singled out and getting your ***** kicked. -
Ganging up on one person bites.
You call them one back
Before I read any more of your senseless whining, exactly WHY do you call them names back? Really. Stop and think about this. What are your words going to do to him? Does it actually hurt when someone calls you a name? I sincerely hope not, because if it does you're taking things way too personally. The solution: stop being so stupid and going along with their little mind games. People like you are very entertaining, since it's very easy to get a rise out you. -
Well, what if a non-Christian wants to know more? I see your point, however, I do not think Mel Gibson wants it to just be seen by Christians. Apparently he's a christian, and believes in the events in this movie. If that is true, he then should want other people (non-christians) to know about it also. A non-Christian may not fully understand it, but if it gets them to ask question, and search it out, I think Mel Gibson's got his point across.
That's a good point, and I agree. If someone is seriously considering learning more about Christianity, then this is a fine movie I'm sure. But I doubt many people are really considering that when they go to watch it. But really, my point was that this isn't Star Wars or something. It's not really about entertainment, or a movie you go to just to watch a movie. I think you'd be disappointed with it in that way anyway.
My teacher completely avoided Vietnam and Korea.
I'm always surprised when I hear this, as it isn't the first time. During my sophomore year, we spent a LOT of time covering Vietnam. As in, 6+ weeks. We studied Korea as well, but not near to the extent of Vietnam.
Unless one has prior knowledge to this material, they're just not getting the full symbolism or the attachment of the characters. Going into a movie, I expect the introduction of characters, I expect them to be developed and I should see their stories pay off by the end of the film. None of these expectations are met here. Hell, many of the supporting characters felt out of place and irrelevant to me.
No wonder you didn't enjoy the movie. If you haven't figured it out already this isn't a typical movie. It's plot was given away thousands of years ago, and people have been caring about the characters for an equal amount of time. It's not trying to be a movie for everyone - it's not going to have little "side plots" to bring out the characters or whatever. It would be completely irrelevant to anyone who has already read the Bible. That being said I really don't see why non-Christians are going to see this movie. It's not meant to "entertain" you. It's not meant to just give you something to do for a few hours. It's to help you better understand what really happened to Jesus and what He went through for us, by providing a visual aid. It's meant to hit you hard, because sometimes the text just isn't enough to fully understand. So don't expect it to be a sound "movie" because it really isn't. Side characters may seem irrelevant, but they're in the Bible and that's what matters. This isn't going to create some fictional account to make it more entertaining. I'll add in that I haven't seen this movie yet. But I will have as of this Saturday.
She's been signed to Def Jam records for... probably well over a year now. She was suppsoed to make her American debut a while ago but apparently it never flew.
Actually, she has an American site now and her debut is said to be set for sometime this Spring. Her site is here: http://www.utada.com/ She's just going by UTADA in the states apparently. Anyway, Transtic makes an excellent point. Utada can't just quit... if she did there would be a huge outcry and the news would be inescapable.
While I was surfing the net, I heard that Utada Hikaru was gonna quit her singing career this year. I am unsure about this information, so if anyone can tell me something, please tell me. Thank-you.
Quite the opposite. I know she has a "best-of" type album coming out in Japan and she's about to make her American debut sometime eventually as well.

Gay Marriage, PLease, let's be mature
wrist cutter replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in General Discussion
Marriage is supposed to be sacred.
Yes. It's supposed to be. But the fact is, it isn't. Remember that whole Britney Spears thing awhile back? She got married ON A DARE. She was probably drunk at the time and so was her husband. There's no sanctity in that. Then they got divorced the next day or something. As I recall the marriage vows including something along the lines of taking each other in sickness and health yadda yadda FOREVER. The whole fact we allow divorce pretty much blows that vow out the window. Let's face it - marriage isn't in a beautiful state right now, gays or no gays. It's still possible to have a "sacred" marriage, I'm sure they happen every so often. But the whole idea has become so bastardized that I really can't see how allowing gays to get married as well is going to make it any less sacred than it currently is. Whether gays are ever allowed to marry or not, marriage is no longer a sacred thing. Unless you're going to protest rednecks and drunks and a whole gaggle of other people getting married, there's very little reason to oppose gays in this situation. -
-Nike (this is pronounced Nee-kee--that's right: the shoe company got it wrong)
It would only be wrong if English had any sort of rules as to how to pronounce any given word. Unfortunately it doesn't. Tomato, tomato. How else would you spell "nike", as the shoe company pronounces it? What magical spelling is the "correct" way? As far as I can tell, they spelled the word as they wanted it and that's how it is.

Keep in mind the Republicans were pretty much doing the same thing to Clinton the first time he tried to get elected. They spent the majority of their campaign nitpicking his flaws, and as it turned out, he won. Twice. I'm not saying Clinton didn't have flaws, but the "bash the other party" technique doesn't seem to work to well honestly. It just makes Bush supporters more fervent if anything, because they can see that the liberals really don't have much of their own to stand on.

Gay Marriage, PLease, let's be mature
wrist cutter replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in General Discussion
I thought Bush had a very smart response to this. He opened the doors a little, but without just outright saying, "Welp, I give up. You guys win. Let's let gays get married all throughout America." I'm sure all you hip youngsters realize that there are people who oppose gay marriage, and that they make up quite a bit of Bush's support. He has to keep these people in mind; but at the same time I think most of America is in support of legalized gay marriage. So he's in a very difficult position currently and I think he's handling it quite well. He's trying to accomodate both sides, which in the end won't work, but in the meantime serves as a temporary solution until he can come up with a final verdict. It's really only a matter of time before it becomes legal throughout America. It's inevitable really. Bush knows this and he's just trying to play his cards right. He can't abandon the majority of his supporters, nor can he give up on the majority of America. He's making an effort to balance the two and I hope it helps his approval rating. -
I don't know if this is really deserving of an entirely new thread, since this seems sort of like a general "***** about the new forums" type thread. I noticed that links are basically indistinguishable from regular text. For example, did you notice that the word indistinguishable links to my website? Oftentimes, I link stuff in my posts rather discreetly... so this might be a problem for me. I guess I could change my font color. But it's just something I thought I'd point out, or if you already knew and planned on it being that way.

It seems a little squished but I'm sure we'll all manage. But what I'd like to point out to you is that not everybody is running at 1024x768. For people whose monitors are set at a resolution of 800x600, this page fills their screen. If they were to make Otakuboards any wider, all of their 800x600 users would complain that they have to deal with sidebar scrolling and whatnot. Unfortunately there are still a lot of people running at 800x600, and so in designing a layout they must bear that in mind. You're probably thinking, "but didn't the old version fill my screen? wouldn't that be too big?". Nope. I'm guessing the old OB used percentages for widths instead of specific pixels, so the width of the table would depend entirely on which resolution you were on would therefore span the width of your screen no matter if you used 800x600 or 1024x768. So why didn't they do that here? Well I'm not entirely sure as I had no part in designing this OB, but it probably had something to do with keeping images aligned properly.
Originally posted by Sara Is there (or could there be) a way to edit the color of certain un-editable sidebar text? (Date registered, Male/Female, etc.)
Yes, but it's not through myOtaku. You can create a *.css file and adjust the text color of the whole site. In the *.css file I used for my site, I made the text color white, so it's white everywhere. I have to add a font color="000000" tag to all my posts so they show up against the white background now.
