Writing Ultimates (Pseudo-Official Comics in General Thread!)
Semjaza replied to Semjaza's topic in Creative Works
Cool, cool. I'll have to look into some of it. Spider-Girl sounds most interesting to me. Do you know how Venom is? I've seen that a few times as well. I thought this week would be a boring comic day. Last week sure was, at least for me. It turned out that I found six comics I wanted, so I was happy. I of course picked up Runaways #5. I freaking love this series. Another great issue in every respect... action, surprises, character development. I was really looking foward to it and read the entire thing on the L (that's our electric train system here). I love the painted cover art they use. Every cover has been great. I was just going to walk out of there with that and the last issue of 100 Bullets... but then I saw it. A new issue of Outsiders!!! I didn't even know it was coming this week. I didn't see it on the shipping lists. I love this comic. I read it on the L as well, and the entire thing was just great. The whole ape storyline was rather stupid at first in #2 (I've yet to read the first issue that I assume explains it), but it tied together rather nicely in #3. More appearances by big name characters too. Great art (some complaints, but they're minor), great writing. I really like it. I only have one real gripe with it... The lettering. It just seems so damn sloppy. It randomly changes sizes and just doesn't look nice. Indigo's text is computer type, so that works fine. Everyone else's seems odd. I also saw a comic that caught my attention. It's called Possession. Seems to be about exorcisms and such with a superhero style vigilante twist. Issue #2 came out this week... but they also had #1. I bought both. I wasn't happy that they cost $2.99 apiece though. I just skimmed through them so far. Writing seems solid, and the art is very good. It's very outline heavy and makes use of a lot of crosshatching. Fits the comic's style. Still have yet to read the two 100 Bullets issues I bought. And Shy... they have about 15 copies of Ultimates #1. I have no idea if it was reprinted or what, but there are lots there. The also had a couple copies of #4, but I didn't bother to get it. I'm still looking for #8 and #9. If you still want #1, let me know. -
Judge: "Mr. Simpson, do you have anything to say for yourself?" Homer: "Yes, I do. I believe that famous people have a debt to everyone. If celebrities didn't want people pawing through their garbage and saying they're gay, they shouldn't have tried to express themselves creatively." I think that summarizes it all well. Really though, they need more limits on those things... but as long as people are interested in seeing fuzzy, far off pictures of celebrities with no make-up on, it's going to keep happening. I don't really get the appeal.

I won't even give people my e-mail in general unless they promise me they won't send me nonsensical forwards, surveys, petitions and chain letters. I spend long enough going through all the disgusting porn e-mails I somehow manage to get. On my last e-mail address I was getting like 15 a day. And it wasn't even good porn. It was gross stuff like animals... with pictures :(

What are you talking about? In the meantime I'm just going to assume you were banned and have returned. It's the only option that makes sense. That or your posts were deleted. In any case, if you want to stick around... please read the rules. Threads like this are specifically referred to in there.

I can't see why anyone that knew much about film would give an award to him for that of all things. It's the main thing any critic/whatever harps on as the biggest when they review or even just refer to his films. If anything, I'd assume he'd get something for the writing in general... He is also a good character director. He has defintitely done things to correct the camera stuff too, so I doubt it's completely his style... more of that mixed with his inexperience. In any case, I'm not overly fond of the style. It works for stuff like Mallrats and Clerks, but not for something like Dogma. Just opinions of course.
Originally posted by Raiha WOOHOO! I have that book and I read it at least once every couple of months. I read it outloud to some students...and around only half got it. :D
I think I'm in love with you Raiha. It's my favorite book ever to this day. So yes, read it! Even the movie is really cool.

Heh. I know what you're making fun of. I've seen plenty of it. Thanks. I'll have to look into it now that I know what is what. I assume they show them in order on Adult Swim, but I don't know. Guess I'll find out.
-
I've never understood why he doesn't just let the cinematographer take care of the camera angles, honestly. It would probably improve the effect of the film. Oh well.
-
How many episodes are there of this series then? I'm not sure how I'll ever catch the last half, but I guess I'll have to watch CN and hope I make it there in time. And what are you desperate for, amibasuki? lol
-
Kevin Smith is a good writer, but a very dull director, I think. I still think Dogma is overrated. Feels too much like some high school thesis on what's wrong with religion. I personally prefer Mallrats. I've never been able to figure out who one of the guys at the trial is. There's of course Spike Lee, Spielberg, Lucas... but who is the small guy with the brown hair? He doesn't look specifically like anyone I can think of. I thought it was Woody Allen at first, but he doesn't look like that. Any help?
Originally posted by Vertigo As good an argument both sides have, I have to admit that I really see no point in this post. If someone doesn't like something, they don't like it, and most of the time, no matter how much they see of it, it doesn't change. It just isn't their style. It seems a bit pointless to try and convince someone that Trigun is worth watching if, in their perception, it isn't. This could just go on forever.
The point was me seeing what is so great about it and why people feel the way they do. I'm not asking for anyone to convince me one way or the other. I want to know why, and I'm not going to get anywhere unless I ask, am I? I'd say not. It was also a question or whether or not it ever gets better, even in the opinion of those who love it. Even they have to have favorite episodes and opinions on whether or not the series improves. I said in my last post that I hadn't even made a final decision yet, and I would watch more of it. It's possible to change your mind on something when you see all sides of it, you know. Forgive me for wanting to be well rounded on the subject and hear other opinions lol. Anyway, I could ask what the point of posting a post that asks what the point is. It goes in a circle lol. It's just as rhetorical.

That's what everyone already does as it is. I've never met any other worker that actually tackled some kid for knocking a box over heh. I'm not exactly serious about wanting to do such things lol. I guess it went over some people's heads.
-
Thanks for enlightening me. I don't even know why you're going against what I am saying. Obviously I'm not referring to the kids who hide under clothing racks. How do you people define "total chaos" anyway? Obviously in a far different way than I do.
-
Logan always does that. Besides this isn't the music forum lol. Anyway... Yes. I can. I did. I will continue to do so. Almost everyone in any industrialized country is going to work retail sometime in their life. If not, it will be food service, or cleaning, or stocking or some other horrible, thankless, repetitive job you need because you need money. And then you can see how thoughtless and idiotic most people really are. It has nothing to do with what I, or most anyone, chose as a career. I'm not even done with school yet. I'm not sure what the relevence of that is. You go to stores to shop... maybe shopping helps your boredom too, who knows. There's no reason to act like an idiot and ruin stuff that workers spend hours and hours fixing up, among other things. Go outside and run around. Ride your bike. Play video games. Don't rip open boxes, knock **** over and throw balls around a store. Whenever I see kids doing that, I want to trip them so they fall on their faces. Of course, I don't, because I actually have some sort of sense of responsibility, unlike these people. I didn't even do that when I was that age. If you're like 12 and you're at a store doing this crap, I don't like you. I just don't. If your parents are there, that's even worse. If they're not, why are you even there? It's not as if any 12 year old goes there to buy things at this point, especially if they're just running around messing crap up. Age doesn't matter much... I see people my age acting like idiots in stores as well. Most of them seem to put stuff to the side when they're done at least. I don't even understand how anyone can even defend that, regardless of whether they do it or not. It's pure idiocy.

I don't read much anymore... but some books I like: Sphere by Crichton. The movie might be crap, but the book was great from what I remember. I read it Freshman year of High School and I read the whole thing through in a very short period of time. Worth checking out. Basically some scientists find a spaceship in the ocean. Wise Blood. I forget the author. I read this for Senior year in High School. It's basically about a guy's search for a purpose in really strange places. I thought it was excellent, although a bit weird. And of course, The Phantom Tollbooth. It's a kids' book, but it's so damn cool. Everyone owes it to themselves to read it.

He's not getting any deader. Don't bring back such old threads for such pointless reasons, please.

You're supposed to hold yourself back at 5 :p. It's hard though, that's why I've not bothered to post in here about it yet. I don't get why you guys are so surprised over people liking Linkin Park. There's only millions upon millions of you... as well as countless very successful threads at OB alone. It's not as if they're remotely underground. Anyway.... 1.) David Bowie - Life on Mars? David Bowie is basically my god, and defintely the god of rock in my opinon. I love this guy. My favorite thing about him is that all his songs tell such good stories. Life on Mars? in particular. It's just a beautiful song. 2.) David Bowie - Space Oddity Another freaking amazing song. The same deal as with Life on Mars?, great story. In case you don't know it... you might have seen Mr. Deeds. It's the song they all sing in the airplane. Great scene heh. The rest are near impossible. I can barely deside... 3.) Queen - Killer Queen Their best song in my opinion. Too bad no one seems to know it. I can recite the entire thing from memory, which trust me, is no easy task. Lots of odd words in it. Freddy Mercury is awesome. 4.) Marilyn Manson - Mechanical Animals I would vote for this entire CD if I could. It's amazing, and one of the top few LPs ever recorded in my opinion. Not overly fond of some of the played-out singles, but there is just some great work on it from the entire band. That song is just one of many that really stands out. The whole disc has a Bowie slant to it. 5.) Who freaking knows. I like too many. The first 4 were near impossible.

I used to work in retail. Kids like this are a big part of the reason we had to stay until 1 or 2 AM cleaning up (and this wasn't anywhere near Christmas) when the store closes at 10 PM. If I could, I'd murder ever last one of them. Painfully. Slowly. Pure enjoyment on my part. Working makes you a very jaded and mean person, I'd say. I can't wait until they are 45 and working at K-Mart (Lord knows they'll not make anything else of themselves) and I can tell my kids to purposely **** the place up. Go to a damn park.

As some of you may know, I spend most of my time on here making web sites. None of which ever get enough content to go anywhere... I mostly like just finishing the designs. Anyway, I know I'm not the only one here that makes sites. I'd like to see some others from various members here. Meaning, you had to have done it yourself... I'm not interested in seeing a blog made from some other designer's template or whatever. Preferably stuff heavy on design, but whatever. I have a few, I'll just start with the one I've been working on the past couple days. I wanted to make a comics based site originally... Just in terms of the graphics. I started off with X-Statix, but that never went through. Instead I looked into Golden Age crime comics... most of the images I used are at www.crimeboss.com. Golden Age crime comics (and even before that age) are generally really horrible in terms of content. They're not worth reading. What is cool about them though are the covers. They're often very detailed, and some are incredibly violent, especially considering many go back to the 40s and such. The site has plenty to check out, it's worth the time. I thought the name fit the comics idea... plus it just sounds rather weird. On top of that it's one of my Marilyn Manson songs. A triple threat! heh This is basically how it looks right now. The site itself is linked in my sig, if you want to check it out. I mostly made use of layers and iframes. I spent a good deal of time just removing various characters from their backgrounds. I played around with the halftone filter to make that comic ink looking effect, which did exactly what I wanted it to. Honestly, I hate Photoshop... but what can you do. The top banner is random, and I plan on making more. It's just various comic covers with stupid inside jokes I stuck in. Bonus points to anyone who knows where "Mmm... Pistol Whip" is from. The background is from a comic. I actually did quite a bit of editing to it that isn't obvious. The street curb had to be redone, I had to remove a signature and a few other things... then I blurred it out of focus so it looks like it is in the distance. I made some more side characters as well... I might stick them in from time to time. They all look a bit jagged because I had to make them into transparent GIFs so my layering idea would work. They basically go where the girl with the gun is now. Site logo thing: Again, slightly jagged because I wanted it transparent... it doesn't really let you easily do nice fadeouts through Photoshop unless you want to spend a long time (and I don't). --------------- So, all in all, about 4 days worth of work from start to finish. Most of it done in about 7 or 8 hours total, I'd estimate... that's counting graphics and coding. So yeah, any comments would be nice. I'll post some more older and newer sites eventually. I'd really like to see other people's sites too... so feel free to post yours in here. I was told this was the forum to do this thread in, so just go ahead. Edit - Oh yeah... It's basically a blog site. I'm restructuring Slow Nerve Action, and putting the blog on this page instead. Seems a bit more focused this way. I'll be moving over my posts later, and resuming new posts tonight (yay for all the people who complain I never update -- you won!).

I'm the oldest in my house, sibling wise. There is no "ALWAYS" anything, but it does seem rather common for brothers to do this. I used to be rather mean to my younger person, but it was mostly a result of how horrible a person she is. I'm being 100% serious too. I've not personally met someone as malicious as her in my lifetime. I think at some point you grow out of it. I stopped starting stuff with my sister a few years after I became a teenager. If she would start things, I'd argue back. Eventually it just got to the point where I was like "I don't have time for this ****. I'm not a little kid anymore." If she argues with me, I pay no attention. I don't get into things with her. It's not worth the time. I stick up for my little brothers and my mom, whom she is unnecessarily mean to, but that's about it. It's mostly just a phase. A really long phase. I found it was best just to be the better person and get past it.

Semjaza replied to lea's topic in Help & Feedback
I think a recipe topic would rock, quite honestly. This is going to repeat some things... Favorites topics in general are discouraged, but it depends on where they go. Things have to result in discussion and not just lists. If you ask for favorite recipes and someone just says "Chicken Pot Pie!", well then the topic is already on its way to sucking. Others just follow suit. Something where you actually say how to make it and so on, I don't see the problem. Anyway, I'd have no problem with it... I don't see why any other mod would. If it gets bad, it gets closed. Simple as that, I guess lol. -
(She said NFL - National Football League, as in US Football). Wait. You want to know if girls should be able to play in the NFL? I think school or even just organized sports are one thing, but not professional level. The size of those guys makes most girls (and even many, many men), even the ones who want to play football, look half the size. They'd get killed. Gradeschool, I don't see a problem. High school either really. I think by high school, though, you have to really keep them seperate or not bother. Doing a seperate female or co-ed team is cool by me, but I don't think it should interfere with the guys' team on top of that. Vice-versa with traditional girls' sports. Even on the college level, I think it's not something worth doing. Guys generally have years and years of experience. You can't just stick a girl in there that has been playing flag football with her friends or something. Even assuming she was a great player, how would it work? She'd have no real, official history on it since any highschool I can think of only allows boys on the teams. On top of that, being on a team in the past myself, the facilities aren't exactly accomodating for women. Sure schools have seperate locker rooms... but no NFL team does. They'd have to spend tons of money just redesigning the place in the vague hope that women would even want to do it. If for some bizarre reason there was enough interest in an all-female or co-ed official, national league... then I think they should be kept seperate from the NFL itself. I can't see there ever being interest on that level. Look at the "success" of the WNBA. Viewers aren't interested obviously. On top of that, I can't see enough women being interested in the first place...especially because schools don't offer it in the first place. How would they draft? Whoever just feels like showing up? We don't have to apply these ridiculous politically correct, equal opportunity, affirmative action ideas to every last thing on the planet. So yeah, seperate for NFL and graduate level stuff... otherwise, I don't see a problem.
