It's so odd the bands people here think aren't well known.

Anime What was the first anime that you watched?
Semjaza replied to Krillen's topic in Otaku Central
Voltron or Robotech. One of those two. Macross: Do You Remember Love? and Vampire Hunter D are the first films I remember watching. -
Lenny. What was the name of the SUV Krusty endorsed?
-
By the way, the first in the series is only going to be $10 at Electronics Boutique next week.

Yep. Go ahead with your question.

People think too highly of anime here. Honestly, there is just as much bad anime as there are bad cartoons. There are plenty of anime with simple titles, although I admit the name of this show isn't exactly thought provoking. In fact, it's right out stupid. The characters I remember from the show are based on established comic book heroes (regardless of the Teen Titans comic and whatever the hell it was originally about... they are from elsewhere and not creations made to cash in on some anime phenomenon). It's not as if their entire personality could possibly be stolen from some random anime... especially considering the examples listed here so far are so general they could apply to 300 other anime, cartoons, TV sitcoms and people around the world. They are obviously thieves though. I've never met a teenager that tries to act dark and cool. Oh wait. I have! There's about 3 million of you. How could that have slipped my mind? Lord knows anime invented klutzes and wallflowers and perverts and magic users and dark brooding types. Come on. Do the Japanese own the rights to every character attitude there is outside of old 60s Hanna Barbara cartoons? People need to broaden their horizons more. I read so much either saying or right out implying (even if the poster doesn't realize he/she is doing it) that they know so much about anime... but people seem to know so little about what goes on here. Hell, I don't even like anime much and I seemingly know about more random series than most people here do. How much am I going to hear about the same few anime and dozen or so characters? Gah. This place drives me nuts lol. I am being overly sarcastic and such, but it's 3 AM and it all gets the best of me. Hopefully no one will take that personally, because I don't feel like dealing with it :D

I have a quite a bit now that I think about it... None really involve actual gamplay though. - The day I got my NES. It was for Christmas from my Great Grandmother. I remember the card and everything. I really didn't even know what the thing was at the time heh. This was like when I was 6. - The day I got my SNES. My mother gave it to me for my birthday. It had already been out for quite some time, and mine was packed with Link to the Past. I remember setting it up and just being blown away. The sound on it simply owned any other videogame system up to that point. To this day, I've never been as impressed by a single game as much as I was by that. - The day I bought FF3. The game had just come out. This was a time when RPG carts were expensive as hell. People seem to think that started with N64, but it definitely didn't. I paid $65 or so for it with tax and was really excited. The game was really hard to find at that point. - The day I got Dragon Warrior. I was about 6 when I got this game, the first real RPG on the NES. The first real RPG in the US. It came free with a subscription to Nintendo Power. My mom was nice enough to renew my subscription and not tell me. It came in the mail randomly one day. I still have a HUGE attachment to the series that is obvious to anyone that talks to me about RPGs. - The day I bought Earthbound for my SNES. I went with my mom and used a $5 off coupon. Man that box was massive. Still my favorite SNES game. That's enough for now.

People apparently feel certain styles of animation are only allowed to be used officially by the Japanese. Who knows. I don't really think the series looks any more anime than most other cartoons on the station. Anyway, I only saw some of it... but I didn't like it. It just seemed incredibly stupid in general. Little kid superheroes with attitude! Blah.

It's called Compu-Global-Hyper-Mega-Net or something like that heh. I tend to remember stupid random things that catch my attention like that. Here's a related one... Hopefully someone will get it. What is Homer's AOL email address? You don't need the numbers and such, just give me the main word. Shouldn't be as hard lol. Fill in the blank.

I don't know if anyone noticed... but there was more after the credits. It basically paves the way for another movie, but I hope they go somewhere else with it. What they had at the end would kind of make the sequel about the same damn stuff. For anyone that didn't see it...
Basically the monkey is the only one still alive and he takes a piece of gold out of the chest. He runs through the moonlight and you see him as a zombie again, obviously re-affected by the curse.
Ozma is a band I found out about thanks to my interest in The Vandals and their label, Kung Fu Records. Ozma started out as a Weezer cover band, and there are still many similiarities. The main one being the use of keyboards. However, I do think Ozma really has their own style and I personally prefer them to Weezer for whatever reason. The members of the band are surprisingly young (some younger than I am), but they are incredibly talented. They really pull off some excellent guitar work and it's obvious that they know quite a bit of styles. There are quite a bit of guitar solos because of this, along with the various keyboard parts. The percussion is solid and well placed. The highlight is probably the lyrics though. I've listened to most of what Ozma has done, and the writing is just excellent. I don't know how they can't appeal to anyone really. I must say that most of their songs involve love in some way, but it doesn't even bother me. There are references to videogames, the 80s and so many other things I have grown up with (hell they do a cover of the Tetris theme and sing about Link from Zelda and Legos). So to put it bluntly, they rock. I only own their two main releases on Kung Fu -- The Doubble Donkey Disc and Rock and Roll Part Three. Both are excellent. They both have their own strengths... The Doubble Donkey Disc is particularly cool because of its Russian theme. They recently released another CD I didn't get yet. I've heard it's not as good as they apparently tried too hard to mature or something. Shy owns it though, and he seems happy with it. Anyway, my personal favorite songs are Baseball, Landing of Yuri Gagarin, Shootingstars, Battlescars and The Ups and Downs. So anyone else?

He'll lose very few fans to this, I think. There are so many examples of sports, political or entertainment figures doing things like this or worse... and people just get over it. The big Kobe fans are all sticking up for him, general people don't even know what's going on... I don't think anyone really thinks he did this, and everything I've read and heard so far makes a lot of the case sound totally baseless. Especially reports from the police station around that area. I think the strangest thing to come out of this is that I've learned that Kobe's middle name is Bean. It was on the lawsuit heh.

Why is there this sudden influx of strange news reports here? lol
-
It's strange that so many people get them in at a younger age. I'm turning 21 in like 3 weeks and they're just barely coming in now...
-
I'm willing to keep this open, as there really needs to be some non-.hack discussion in here heh... However, everyone is going to have to give a bit of reasoning why they hate or love these characters. Simply naming them won't do. So the future of this is up to you guys really.

My wisdom teeth are coming in now and they don't hurt whatsoever. I'm in no rush to get them taken out.

Location, location, location--Where are you from?
Semjaza replied to Baron Samedi's topic in General Discussion
It seems like everyone here is either from California, Texas or Australia. I still can't believe I'm the only Chicago kid here. I've seen a couple others come and go (such as Mist, I think that was her name... where the heck is she??), but only I seem to stick around. It's really weird considering how huge Chicago is. I don't even know if there are any other people from Illinois here. -
Had they been broken up long? I downloaded some songs when you mentioned them in another thread way, way back... but I don't know much about their history. This is pretty strange... Just the other day, Frank Black (aka Black Francis of the Pixies) basically said there is a good chance for a Pixies reunion and possibly even a new album. Apparently him and his old bandmates are playing together regularly and getting along great... which is a big deal because the band basically broke up because of problems between him and Kim Deal, the bassist. I felt like I won 10 million dollars when I heard this. They're simply my favorite band ever and nothing can compare... And they're not even for sure yet like Zao seems to be, which probably means you're even more excited heh. I decided a while back that the one thing I really wanted in life was to get to attend a Pixies concert... something I never thought possible, especially since they broke up in like 1993 lol. So yeah, I can really relate right now. It's a great feeling isn't it? :D And congrats on the job heh.

No, it's not. I agree with you, and actually you're correct. The problem is that certain mods got overzealous with the outside linking rule and went out of control. I've talked with James in the past, as I disagreed with many link deletions... and he said that shouldn't have happened. For example, someone made a thread about a band and left a link to their website. A mod went in and removed it. James told me there was nothing wrong with that link. This is totally different from making a thread or a post for nothing more than advertising... especially something that is your own personal work. That's where that signature stuff comes into play.

The pockets of a pocket fox that only existed for like 4 weeks or something. What type of motorhome did Homer buy for his family in an early episode?
-
Heh. I couldn't tell from what you said if you had it or not. No worries. So yeah, you'll probably have the the same problems... assuming you thought the manga was a great as I did. I still think it's worth a purchase though, and I am sure you'll enjoy it.

I'd suggest you come up with an odd number of judges rather than an even number. Totally kills of the chance of a tie heh. -
It's Ghost in the Shell... not Ghost in a Shell or Ghost is a Shell :p I liked the film. I had a lot of problems with it, but I liked it. I think if you appreciated movies like Akira, you will appreciate this one. GitS is arguably the better movie of the two. My main problems exist because of my familiarity with the manga. The film takes parts of the manga, but doesn't really deal at all with the main idea. Many things are changed as well, particularly the ending (into something I personally think was almost fan service). So... I'm guessing you haven't read the manga, which means most of what I'm going to say won't matter to you. It's a good film, and worth seeing in any case. I'd have to say the same about the cloaking systems in the film as well. The manga and the film both deal with various agencies and governments all aligned against eachother, so there are some assassinations and spying points in both. So, of course, cloaking systems are needed. In the manga, Motoko Kusanagi (the main character) can cloak anytime as long as she has the equipment. In the film, for some reason, she has to be completely naked. While the reasoning for it makes sense, it just seems like a reason for fans of the comic to see Motoko bouncing around naked and kicking ***. The manga had nudity as well, but it was a bit more tasteful (if you want to call it that). The character designs are different from the manga too... The Chief and Motoko in particular. I was also very unhappy with the english dub, which made cyborgs such as Motoko sound a hell of a lot more robotic than I imagined them to be (I've not heard the original Japanese as of yet, so I can't compare). So yeah, I could go on some more with some of the plot flaws... but that would be more information than you need heh. It's a good movie, and I'd have to say anyone that thinks it is "bad" just doesn't like these kinds of stories. It has nothing on the manga, but is still quite good. In any case, the whole franchise did well enough to spawn a TV series (Stand Alone Complex -- which personally I found rather dull) and another set of manga called Man-Machine Interface... which is beautiful, but boring even to those who loved the detail of the original manga. If you're looking for good anime DVDs there's always the Cowboy Bebop Movie and Grave of the Fireflies... not to mention a few other Ghibli DVDs.
