Art Un-Official Otaku Boards Art Championships Sign-ups!
Semjaza replied to a topic in Creative Works
Heh. Figures something like this would come along. I am supposed to get an actual official art contest going at some point in time, but no one has really talked with me about it since it was first decided upon. It worked very similiarly to this... no writing though. I'm willing to sign up for judging on the art side of things, if that's alright with you. Edit - By the way, I do NOT give number ratings. I write out why or why I don't like something. If you want number ratings, then count me out. That's my only condition lol. -
Heh. I had named John as my pick for best guitarist in that guitar duel thread. No one mentioned him other than myself, so I don't know if anyone else here is familiar with him. I'm sure more people here know Dream Theater than is obvious, but they're not really the type of metal that seems to be popular around here with most people... Basically not noise for the sake of noise and tons of anger or whatever else. They're more of a technical metal group. If anyone here is familiar with Castlevania music (especially the guitar versions on Symphony of the Night), that's the kind of sound they go for. Lots of orchestration as well. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance takes up the entire second CD of the album (a 2 disc set, which is also called Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance). They have it split up into eight different tracks so you can skip around, but they aren't exactly segmented well. You really have to listen to the whole thing to get the full effect. I think Goodnight Kiss (part 5 of the song) is my favorite section of the track. You should really check out Liquid Tension Experiment if you like Dream Theater. PS - Dream Street disgusts me. I hope they are long dead heh.

Tonight? I thought this happened like three months ago. I think people should take responsibility for their own actions. McDonalds didn't drive the guy to their restaurant and buy the food for him every day. He did that on his own.

Drums aren't easy if you actually hold yourself to some sort of regiment and don't just play randomly for the hell of it. Same with anything else. In fact, I'd say drums are one of the hardest to play in situations where you have to not play for certain beats or periods of time. I find most people instinctively just want to hit the drums on a constant basis lol. In any case, Shippo said a small wind instrument which makes me think of three particular instruments: flutes, soprano saxophones and clarinets. Alto saxophones could possibly fit, but I guess it depends what your definition of small is. I've played saxophones for years -- soprano, alto, tenor and baritone -- and I would normally recommend that. I personally prefered tenor. If it were me, I'd probably go with flute though. Flute can be an amazing instrument if you learn to play it well, and is easily capable of pretty much anything you want. The only problem is that is probably the hardest of those I've mentioned so far... so I'd probably say saxophone or clarinet. I personally think recorder is a waste of time and is only useful if you want to learn basic music reading and tones. If you're interested enough to get a real instrument... just get one. However, it's hard to just jump in on one. There are a lot of stores and rental places you could work through before you make up your mind. Edit for below -- Well, if you don't explain yourself... I don't know how you could expect anyone to just know what you mean. The word "drums" implies a lot more than the thing you're talking about.
-
Well, at this point... the only ones you'll probably find at most places are 2,000 Years of Human Error and Evolver (and possibly Power Tool Stigmata). I've not heard enough of Evolver to recommend it... so I'd grab 2,000 Years. Eleanor Rigby was on a couple albums, but the better version is on 2,000 Years. I believe Break You Down is on the Blair Witch 2 soundtrack. I never saw the film, but there were some decent tracks on the CD. Notably a cover of the MASH film theme song, Suicide is Painless, by Manson (the lyrical version). If you're looking for other new bands and you like this sort of sound... I'd also recommend Curve. You can't really go wrong with any of their albums.

I don't know how anyone would know that unless they sat and found that specific episode and started at the images anyway. That's like asking what type of pills Grandpa Simpson had in his cabinet when he made his sex potion for Homer (Asbestos Pills, by the way). I'm fresh out of questions though.
-
It's fine as if people say this is what I believe... but a lot of people imply that no you're wrong, this is it. I've seen it in here a few times as it is. And unless you have god answering you and telling you exactly how afterlife works and you're the only one that's right, no. I think you took everything I said far too literally.
-
I always find it amusing when people present their beliefs on the afterlife as fact. Have you met god? Do you know anyone that has visited Heaven? Of course not. In any case, I can't trust anyone's beliefs here if they can't even spell Heaven correctly. I don't even think about this stuff. I'm alive. We're all alive. Why not be concerned with your life, then? That's what supposedly gets you into these places in the first place. If I die, I die. I had a good run. If I go to Heaven, great. If I go to Hell, that's not so great, but I have no control over that once my life is over. And if there is simply nothing? Well, I'd simply cease to exist anyway, so how would I ever know? I wouldn't.

I'd imagine he let them use a lot of the recording equipment Marilyn Manson itself uses. I've seen videos of their offices, and it wasn't exactly a totally small time operation. What I've heard about Priority is basically a lot of word of mouth. I'm not sure what happened to Priority itself... but however it all went down, some of the smaller labels at Priority were removed after the acquisition. Priority is still obviously around though. Manson, godhead and everyone inbetween don't seem to ever talk about it... so it's hard to just give hard facts heh. The label hadn't done all that much anyway... All I can think of is the Blair Witch 2 soundtrack and 2,000 Years.
-
Heh. I look forward to hearing it... if possible. I've still not heard any of your stuff lol. The older records are still very good, but it's kind of a mixture of studio problems and a lack of focus on the music side. Many of the songs really have some useless sounds to them that detract from the overall composition. The recording quality was never bad, but I'd assume that Posthuman had to have had a better studio and equipment... it just sounds quite a bit better. So really, I think they just matured a lot between those records. It had been years, they finally were on a bigger label and apparently Manson had a decent influence on the sound.
-
I remember you mentioning them in the past... I figured you'd post in here, if anyone heh. Yeah. I didn't even know until a couple months ago. Came as a bit of a surprise. That's about the same time I found out that Posthuman Records was gone. I've always liked godhead... I don't know if you've heard their previous two CDs, but 2000 Years was a massive step up in quality. There are a few songs on there I still listen to constantly (I Sell Society, etc). I figure this album will be pretty cheap. I picked up the last one for $5.99 at Best Buy. Hope it turned out, but I admit, what I've heard so far didn't really win me over.

Rocko's Modern Life was great. I was always upset when they changed the theme song. The original was great, and it was changed into this awful mess... I don't even know if I'd call it music. Spunky was just odd. I'll never forget the episode where he kept trying to have sex with the mop. I'm still surprised that Nick showed that, as it was really obvious and a rather old episode.
-
I don't mind heh. I just noticed that someone mentioned that sig, which surprised me. My sigs are rarely ever funny, so eh.
Originally posted by Lan21013 I have to go with Queen Asuka's old sig. I don't think that was entirely it, but it got me laughing so hard!
It wasn't Ryan... It was Tony, which is me. Otherwise, that's pretty exact heh.

Writing Ultimates (Pseudo-Official Comics in General Thread!)
Semjaza replied to Semjaza's topic in Creative Works
I'd also have to add... Comics don't cover just "action". I've read manga to death before I got tired of it and started reading comics. If you get a good comic like The Ultimates, there really is little comparison at times. There are plenty of random genres... I was at the store and I found a large amount of love/comedy comics that manga seems to specialize in, comics just about people's random lives and everything else. You just have to look around and realize that not every comic is about an unbeatable superhero. -
godhead is an industrial group basically. They've been around for years, but did their best saleswise with their last CD, 2000 Years of Human Error. The CD was put out on Marilyn Manson's Posthuman Records label (which was under Priority... which was since bought out, so Posthuman is now defunct). They got some exposure thanks to a lot of Manson's influence on their tour as well as putting their songs in various soundtracks along with some larger, similiar bands (Blair Witch 2, Queen of the Damned, etc). Anyway, I felt it was a really great CD... Some excellent writing and good beats. They really had moved on from Power Tool Stigmata, their previous disc. This was especially obvious in Eleanor Rigby (yes, a Beatles cover) and Penetrate, which were both redone on 2000 Years of Human Error to much, much better effect. Anyway, I love the band if you can't tell. Their new CD, Evolver, came out this past Tuesday. I've not gotten it yet, but I've heard a bit. It seems a lot more guitar based than their previous efforts, with heavier emphasis on vocal distortions. I'm not sure if I liked what I heard yet, but the quality was horrible... so who knows. So any other fans here? And if so, any plans to get Evolver?

My favorite threads are all the ones I make that no one posts in... or the ones I think about, but never post because I know beforehand that no one will post in them. Yay for me.

Well, I was given a NES when I was like five, so Nintendo was always my thing. When you're used to something, I think you don't really want to give the newcomers a chance. Sega wasn't really a newcomer when the Genesis came along, as they had the Master System (and had been around for decades at that point)... but in the US, the SMS wasn't exactly a hit. When the Genesis came out, a friend of my dad's let me borrow his along with a few games. I played Sonic and Batman (some import game, but it worked fine) constantly and I really liked them. My sister and I saved up for a Genesis and my mom said we could buy it... but for some reason my dad was an *** and said no. I still don't know why. I wound up getting an SNES for my birthday years later. Link to the Past was packed in with it. To this day, I don't think a single game had blown me away as much as LttP. The sound alone was way better than anything the NES or Genesis ever provided. So I basically became a huge Nintendo fan, and was one of those dorks that defended everything they did. Bought an N64 eventually. I borrowed someone's PSX and loved Resident Evil on it... so I got one of those as well. Around this time I stopped really being loyal to any one company. I ordered a Dreamcast from Sega and got it on 9-9-99, and was very happy with that. Got it along with Sonic and Soul Calibur. I picked up a Saturn a bit later. So I was kind of into everything at that point, although when the Xbox hit I admit I wasn't exactly big about MS getting in on gaming. I still am not, honestly. I'm not exactly going nuts about it though. Now, I just like games. I don't care what they are on. A good game is a good game, no matter what it is made for. I wish more people realized it. So in answer to your question, in a short form, I was a Nintendo fan. I still respect them more than most other companies. They are still the only developer where I can blindly buy one of their games and know I'll like it on some level that would make the purchase worth it. I think the only other company I know that I trust like that is tri-Ace.

As far as I know, Iwata was only involved with HAL and was their president before moving over to NCL.

The Ramones are and were a pop punk band. I don't know why so many people classify them as otherwise, but that's what they were. That's why I find it odd what groups people call pop punk now. I'd stick half of them in the pop rock category, if that. The Sex Pistols are goofy and just as manufactured as many boy bands today. I enjoy their music, but they definitely aren't what people who consider themsevles well versed in such music would call true punk... whatever the hell people might consider that to be this month (seems to change constantly depending on who I talk to and what's popular at the time). To me it doesn't even matter. I listen to what I want to listen to. I'm not overly fond of genre nitpicking either. Anyway, Kazaa doesn't allow you to look up specific usernames for some odd reason. They have to be one of the people that shows up in your file searches first.

Writing Ultimates (Pseudo-Official Comics in General Thread!)
Semjaza replied to Semjaza's topic in Creative Works
I went to Graham Crackers yesterday... which is the name of the shop downtown for some odd reason. Anyway, I kept looking and looking. I picked up Captain America, but when I flipped through the pages... I just wasn't impressed with the writing. I put that back on the shelf. I checked out Wolverine DOOP, but the $2.99 price on it wasn't exactly nice... so I put that back too. Same with X-Statix, although I plan to go back and buy that since I'm hearing so many good things. I'm hearing the newest Runaways is quite nice too, so I might give that another shot. I wound up walking out with Ultimates #6. I plan on collecting all of the series anyway, so it seemed worth the $4. -
That's amusing to me heh. Way back, most sites on the internet made use of black backgrounds with white text. I was around these a lot, and I know a majority of people simply got tired of it. They were incredibly trying on the eyes. Many sites went to white backgrounds because of it (IGN for example). So I'd prefer no black, honestly. However, darker shades of other colors wouldn't be so bad. It kind of depends what people wind up making, I guess.

Tons of posts does not equal a successful thread in my mind. Two pages of it (and I'm at 70 views a page) are nothing but infighting between a few people taking this far too seriously. So, I stand by what I said before.

I'd echo what she just said... Also, maybe you should use a ruler along with the tablet? The desk looks slightly odd because there aren't really any straight lines on it. I'm glad to see you seemed to have gotten over that whole leather style you were having problems with before. As for the other one, you just need to copy and paste the link into your address bar. Geocities doesn't allow direct image links.
