  1. I'd like to make a request in this thread as well. No one has to do it, but it would definitely be appreciated. I've been linking to random myOtaku's and other OB related member sites for awhile now from WIP. However, I prefer to use 88x31 sized buttons... If anyone I know decently would like me to link to their sites, I'd really prefer you made one that size as well. Otherwise I'm stuck with the 100x35 buttons lol. Apparently Konami was rather stringent about how the game should flow and what could and couldn't be changed. I don't know how true that is, but it wouldn't surprise me.
  4. Pictures aren't showing up for me. Pending good reviews, though, I plan on picking this up. I really enjoyed the third one on the Playstation. It's quite a bit of fun and one of Square's better properties. It's a shame not more people play it.
  5. You're downright insane, James. Ducktales on the NES rocks heh. I do know Silius. Let's see what I can come up with for this... Atari 2600: Journey. This was a game based on a band that some might know of... Journey. I have no idea what is going on in this game whatsoever. I cannot figure out how to play it in any sense. I pop it in, stare at colored blocks and just wonder what the hell is going on. NES: Super Pitfall. Apparently this was called something else in Japan and had Pitfall applied to it in the US. The game is terrible. You look like Super Mario in a blue suit. Your gun shoots the equivlent of three feet before the bullet just disappears. Some monsters are completely invulnerable, but you don't know which ones. The goals to the game are completely unclear and there's almost no way you'd know what to do because all of the items you need to collect are totally invisible until you happen to jump into their vicinity. At the same time, the game is so lame that I find myself playing it from time to time. SNES: Bubsy. This game was somewhat popular when it came out and I just can't figure out why. It wound up getting a sequel as well as a 3D counterpart on the PSX that was awful. The original game looked decent, but it played like crap. A cross between Sonic and Mario. If you held down a way d-padyou just ran faster and faster in that direction like in Sonic... but there were tons of platforms and other things like in Super Mario. Just bad design all around. Playstation: Fox Hunt. I like this in some bizarre way. It's one of those FMV games where you have to press buttons at the right time to advance. It's so corny that it's lovable, but it's honestly just a pretty bad game. You even fight lol. There are worse games though. I think Darkstone is probably the worst one I've bothered to pick up. N64: DK64. This was the height of every single problem Rare ever had. Stupid new characters, lame levels and marathon collecting. Everything in this game was collectable and almost everything had to be to make any real progress. It even put the collecting in the Banjo Kazooie games to shame. I had fun with it for awhile, until I got about two hours in any realized how lame it was. Dreamcast: Soul Fighter. It was a budget game and somehow I got a copy from someone I knew. Awful in every sense. Looked like high res Playstation graphics. World design was atrocious. Enemies were ugly, stupid and simple. Picking a character to play as mostly just involved picking the one that was least ugly. Playstation 2: I traded in all my bad games... I can't think of anything for this. GameCube: Star Fox Adventures. Super high production values, I'll give it that. It's still one of the best looking console games I've yet to play. The music was orchestrated and well done. The whole thing was just really polished in that regard. The gameplay just sucked though. More and more collecting. Running from place to place to bring some guy some pointless item so you could finally advance. The fighting was terrible. Only one guy would attack you at a time and it was all so simple that you never even risked getting hurt. Puzzles and such were tedious most of the time and cared more about beating a clock than anything else. The flight sections were awful and too easy. The boss battles were mostly okay, but the ending sections really ruined it for me. [spoiler]The guy who is your main enemy in the entire game gets killed seconds before you actually get to fight him. And then suddenly Andross appears and you have to fight him in space. And I mean SUDDENLY. The game gives absolutely no clues of his involvement whatosever. It's like it was rammed in to complete the Star Fox license.[/spoiler] Xbox: I've not honestly played a bad game on this yet... but I don't own many as it is. I only buy stuff like Halo and KotOR, and they can't count for this lol.
  6. The X-Men comparisons seem strange to me... but then again I read and enjoy comic books. When you have people who don't know much beyond the basics of the more popular superhero movies out there, I can't expect them to know much about something like Hellboy. So I can't say I'm surprised by most reactions to this movie lol. The "corks" on his head are where his horns used to be. They were removed. It's shown in the new commercials. As for the corny-ness... I think it's intentional. It's a comic book movie. I expect a certain amount of dorkyness and lame one liners, especially when the comic contains that in the first place.
  7. It takes one shot to kill the world because it's all in your head. Basically, when I die, the world as I know it will end. Therefore, I don't really concern myself with whether or not some random crazy man will launch a million bombs or if zombies will rise from the ground and kill us all or if a virus will wipe out all life or a meteor will hit the earth. Most of it is unavoidable from where I stand. When it's gone, it's gone. It's not as if I'd still be alive to see it.
  8. Personally I prefer it without your name in it. Really, I don't see the point of having names in banners if the person who made it is using it... Your name is above your post. That's just what I think about that in general though, not just with this banner lol. In terms of the actual effect of the work, I think the words just take away from it, to be honset.

  10. While I admit I barely remember the movie now, I did enjoy it. At the time it seemed like a lot of people were complaining about how poor the film was and I just never understood it.
  11. I used to have this tendency to basically blow through any RPG I had. I would play them quickly, but the problem was that I'd not level up much. I'd get to the last areas and be totally screwed because my character was too weak to advance or back track to get more supplies. This happened to me in both FFVII and FFVI. So I just play through them again. I like playing this way because I seem to notice a lot more small details the second time through... so while it's frustrating at first, I don't mind it in the end.

    Plenty of hard rock and metal bands manage to get to the number one spot. The main problem is that a lot of metal just isn't all that accessible to the general public. I can't forsee a band that does nothing but scream jumping up to the #1 on the charts... but that's the plain old Billboard charts. There's subsections of Billboard that they might do well on and various other ones from different companies.
  15. I wound up renting this game just to see how it was. It's been getting decent reviews and people who have played it have enjoyed it. I've played an hour and a half or so and I'm really surprised. This is a really good game. This has been said already... but I just wanted to add some more detail to it...You play as Torque (just his nickname, thank god lol), a guy sent to prison for the murder of his wife and two kids... one he can't even remember commiting. Apparently Torque has blackouts. Once you get to the prison some crazy stuff happens and the place is just overrun with monsters. It's not the most amazing set-up, but so far the story has been surprisingly interesting and well told. Once you escape your cell, the game does a good job of conveying the atmosphere. Everything is really dark and you're lucky to find a room with some lights in it. Luckily it's not hard to find your way around and your character finds maps of the place every so often. You eventually get a flashlight too. I think this heightens the creepiness even more because 1.) you can't use it all the time because it sucks batteries (you can find them littered around the prison though) and 2.) it really doesn't light up things that far (comparable to maybe 8 feet, I'd guess). The game is really creepy. More than most games I've played in the "horror" genre. Everything is just soaked in blood, but I don't think it's overdone considering what is going on. The opening area in the game really does a nice job of setting the mood. You'll come across dead bodies and see people getting ripped apart by the monsters too quickly for your character to react. It reminds me of Half Life in that sense. There's other scenes so far that do these sorts of things. I notice in many games of this type they put all the smarter scares at the start and just get lazy with it. That's not happened so far. There's been a lot of random things going on. [spoiler]After I accidentally gassed a cop in the gas chamber, I entered the room. Across the way was a thick glass window that seperated the chamber from the viewing room. I heard these loud thumps and I saw that one of the blade monsters (a Slayer, I talk about them further down) was trying to get into the room. He kept cracking the window more and more until it busted (which was no easy feat, the class looks like 6 inches thick). The thing disappeared, only to attack me in the next room heh.[/spoiler] I've not seen too many types of monsters yet, but they're weird enough that I don't mind that. The main one so far is some weird Voldo looking creature called a Slayer. Instead of arms and legs it just has stumps with swords in them. The things are really quick and lunge at you. There's been several times when I didn't even realize they were anywhere near me and they just fly across the screen. It can be rather startling. The game also just makes such cool use of them. There's a good scare at the start of the game where [spoiler]one of them walks past your cell and he drags his blade across the barsl... sparks flying all over the place while it clangs against them. I've had times where they come at me slowly dragging their blades against the walls too. Plus they can climb walls and ceilings like a spider. Going into a room and seeing them for split second and then disappearing up on the ceiling... just hearing them clank around on the pipes up there until they jump back down and try to kill you. Some of the larger ones actually can block your shots and attacks as well. They don't seem too stupid either, as I've noticed them retreat when they've been shot several times. There are a decent amount of death animations just for these guys too. I saw a cool one where if you shoot the Slayer when it's on the ceiling, it's whole body goes limp and all but one of its limbs come loose from it. It dangles for a few seconds from the one limb and then falls to the ground and sprawls across the floor.[/spoiler] There's also a great use of the dead in this game. I've come across a few guys that seem to act as tour guides. Going into various rooms, you'll sometimes hear the voices of dead inmates telling you freaky things... some of which are actually hints on what to do to progress. Thanfully, none of these are really obvious. In one of the solitary confinement rooms [spoiler]a voice said "I found a way out..." and I eventually came back there when I was stuck on what to do. When I looked up, I realized there was a way out through the ceiling. I pushed a crate into the room and climbed up it to make my escape.[/spoiler] All of the more puzzle-like things have been something to that effect so far. Logical, not Resident Evil types. You also come across people who you can choose to help or dispose of. The cool thing about this is that there are actually three voices going on at once. You have the character talking... but you also have the voice of your dead wife telling you to help and some evil sounding voice that generally tells you to kill the guy because he's in your way. It's suitably creepy and just a really cool touch. If you do help these people, they run around the prison with you and show you different ways to go. Some help with the fighting, some don't. However, they all do add to the story. I helped some inmate named Byron and whenever he comes across certain things, he gives you a bit more background on them. Nothing in this game feels like a lecture of information though... just informative dialogue. I managed to get Byron to a gateway out of the prison, but it only stays open long enough for one person to get out (the switch is on the other side of the area). Of course, he left saying he'd send help and the gate closed and exploded, so I can't go out that way. There's also an insanity meter. When it gets full you can use a special ability... the monster referred to in the first post. It's pretty cool and is good at slicing things up. IT even can bust through doors, from what I've seen. Controls took some getting used to, but once I did I've had no problems. Took about 15 minutes to get it all down and customize it to my tastes. You can go into first person mode at any time as well. Unlike most games with this feature, it actually puts you into a FPS looking mode that plays surprisingly well. To answer the question before, it's more of a splatterfest. You blow things up constantly, but at the same time you tend to be careful and slow about things because you never know when something is going to jump out at you or not. I was kind of surprised by how much swearing there is in this game too. Nothing is censored, it's all out there... and everything they could possibly say, well, someone in the game says it lol. Anyway, I'm impressed so far and I totally recommend at least giving this a rent. I have it on Xbox, by the way.
  16. If you consider things like Metropolis one of the worst anime films you've ever seen, you must have not seen many bad ones lol. I think the film is slightly boring, but it's hardly that bad. There was one I saw that had a name something like Gryzor's Wing. The dubbing on it is quite possibly the worst I've ever come across in my life. In addition to this, the animation was dull, the charcters sucked and the story was mind numbingly stupid. Awful all around. I've never liked Miyuki-Chan in Wonderland either. It was only $10 on DVD, but I feel like I could have better spent that money on a shiny new ice pick. Stabbing my brain with that a few times would have been more enjoyable. It's random to the point of stupidity. I also didn't like what I saw of Kiddie Grade. Just remarkably dull. I don't know how else to describe it. Appleseed is also a pretty horrible anime, especially in comparison to the manga. The manga is incredibly detailed and interesting... whereas the anime changes characters around, adds new ones, totally rearranges the story. And then it doesn't even bother to do a good job at it. It also has some really horrible and cheesy 80s music for a soundtrack.
  17. To be quite honest, I can't see a point to this. Sure, it's a neat idea, but would any of these really need more than one thread dedicated to them? The RPG Maker thread isn't exactly setting the game section here on fire or anything. If people had enough of their own stuff going to make their own game and post it up, I wouldn't have any issues with that personally. I'd say there was more of a reason to make the Web Design forum and even that's a bit slow. I'd think dedicating an entire forum to game making would barely crawl along enough to justify its own existance.

I was mostly concerned something I said would be read differently than I meant it, since that happens a lot lately. And truth be told, I write too much as it is heh :D. In any case, for me, if I think of a hardcore gamer and ignore all of the things people say about the subject on the internet and magazines... I'd say my definition of it would fall somewhere between yours and James's. I agree with parts of both of your opinions on it.

Things get loaded up and alignments get thrown out of whack until everything is in its correct place. That isn't really a problem. The problem I am having is something that is present on every thread page after it completely loads.
  20. Comparisons to a mechanic don't really work. You'd be crazy to think that most of them don't keep up on new and upcoming cars, parts and accessories. They don't just magically know what is best just because they work on a lot of cars. They know about upcoming things because they keep up on the news and keep themselves informed as to studies into how well the parts actually work and what their specs are. With games, I don't think the so-called "hardcore" gamer can just walk up to the store, see a game and know what looks good and be 100% right. Same with how a mechanic can't just blindly order parts just because of some random intuition. They have information behind what they say, and every last bit of it is not just from them and their own experience. They keep up on the industry in some fashion. I remember you making a comment that you thought RPGs dried up by FF3 on the SNES. If you actually kept up on RPG news you would know that there were countless other ones that had original things to offer between that game and the release of Suikoden II years later. I think any gamer who keeps up on upcoming games, reviews and impressions would know this. Of course, if you did all of this and still nothing appealed to you, that's another matter... but I don't feel you can just randomly show up at a shop and decide what is good and what is not. It seems the idea has become that casual gamers are people who go out and buy a game with "Dragon Ball" or "The Matrix" in the title with no thought behid it other than the license. People who buy a violent game just because it is violent. Whereas, hardcore gamers often play enough games that they wind up keeping up on future releases and previews to realize what is best for them. I think the average gamer (who isn't necessarily hardcore or casual, in terms of how people use the words in the gaming world) might keep up with things just enough that they can still make informed purchases. However, would these people be likely to by a niche game that's getting good reviews over a big name game getting sub-par reviews? I don't know. As for your Game of the Year comment, I see no reason why the average gamer wouldn't know such things anyway. You don't have to be hardcore to know that considering that most GOTYs are all over the place, get advertising and even have GOTY printed on new copies. I've been playing games since I was 5 and buy them constantly. Even I don't automatically just know a game will be amazing. I don't do blind purchases. You can get burned by them, regardless of the company involved. Even major publishers like Nintendo or Square don't get everything right... but that's not always obvious if you just go by box arts and impulse buying. When I think of hardcore, I don't think of someone who just buys games and is good at them (I'd just consider that a normal gamer... when people use the term "casual" in terms of gaming, it often means even less than that, as I've stated more or less). I think of someone who actively keeps up with the industry, games around the world, news as well as playing a decent amount of games across many different genres. Thanks to these things, I've been able to know what's coming, why companies do what they do with these games and I've also been able to keep my eye on smaller budget niche games that many other people might otherwise ignore. I wouldn't automatically just know that Gitaroo Man was a good game, for example. How many people would even know about that if it wasn't for good reviews and word of mouth among the online gaming community? Not many. Anyway, I'm stopping here because I'm not getting everything worded the way I wanted to... but basically I don't think you two are approaching the terms hardcore and casual from the same angles lol.
  21. I know this is rather old at this point, but I thought I posted in here and tonight I realized I actually didn't. I wanted to just say that I really enjoyed the application. I wonder if anyone else even bothered to send one in to Shinmaru lol.
  22. I don't think the Lethal Weapon reference is even a good comparison. While they obviously have questional subject matter, he didn't direct them. Nothing he has directed would seriously make me question why he has bothered with something like the Passion or his interest in the religion. Yet he's apparently involved in another Mad Max movie, so I don't know lol.
  23. If you like Deja Vu, you might like The Uninvited and Shadowgate. They play the same, but with different locales and stories. Game Boy Color also got a game with Deja Vu and Deja Vu 2 in it... I don't think 2 was ever released here. Dragon Warrior III - Dragon Warrior was my first RPG. DWII was good, but not what I expected. It was too vague, among other things. III, however, rocks. There's not as much character development as in some of the others, mostly because you create the three other members of your team. The game is huge. You have a massive overworld, which alone is several times larger than the world in the original. Once you get past that, you wind up in the underworld... which is also pretty damn big as well. The cool thing about the underworld in III is that it's actual the main world in the first game in the series. This is because III is a prequel. Great game and even better in the Game Boy Color version. Little Nemo the Dream Master - What an awesome game. You play as Nemo, a child in pajamas that has to defeat the evil in the dream world. It's made even better by your ability to get animals around the stages to join your cause. The weird thing about this is that you don't ride the animals, you actually go inside of them heh.   24. Hmm allright. Goonies II - I've always loved this game. It was rather revolutionary for its time. A weird combination of action and adventure and it even has some RPG-esque elements. By today's standards it's incredibly vague and you get lost rather easily... but if you keep trying, you'll make it. Thankfully it has a password screen so you don't have to do it all at once. Basically the Fratelli's somehow get out of prison again. They kidnap and hide all of your friends and for an unexplainable reason, a mermaid. You play as Mikey. You go out with your yo-yo and try to save them and finally the mermaid. Obviously it has little to do with the movie in any remote sense. It's set up rather strange. There are areas that you go between. Towns, caves, basements, etc. You travel between areas mostly via doors and there's a bizarre variety of characters to meet. Clash at Demonhead - This is my favorite NES game. It's another action adventure. This time you play as a secret agent known as Bang who is on a quest to rescue Professor Plum and stop the Doomsday Bomb. You run around a very large map fighting monstes, meeting some friends and learning new abilities. I think it's as fun now as when I first played it. Battle of Olympus - This is, for all intents and purposes, a Zelda II clone. However, in many ways it is quite a bit better. In a few other ways, it's not quite as good (insane amounts of monsters that have projectiles you can't dodge, for example). The game follows Roman/Greek mythology. It's quite a bit of fun. You can actually name your character and the girl you're trying to same in the story as well. Gameplay is a lot like Zelda, but with money and a lot more abilities to learn. Jackal - Awesome army game from Konami. You drive around in a jeep and blow stuff up. Tanks, helicopters, trucks, etc. It's a lot of fun. That's all I feel like mentioning for now heh.
  25. If someone posted an attachment and wound up using that as their banner... it's the only way it'd even be hosted by OB in the first place. It wouldn't show up if you were logged out... But as for any other situation, I have no answer.
