Anime Studios [Gainax, GONZO, Madhouse, etc.]
Semjaza replied to 0ber0n the Neko's topic in Otaku Central
Well I have a small question... How many other animes from other studios have you seen? (not to be rude or anything, but if you had little experience in other studios, that MIGHT be the cause of you unimpressment...ing...) Miyazaki is very good, borderline genius, but i find some of his titles a little TOO heartwarming :rotflmao: *pops*... Although so many of his are so good, its hard to tell what his potential for storywriting is... With other studios, you get a few kinda stupid and pointless animes -_- , and then you get blasted with an amazing and immersive story :excited: ! You ought to try some of the titles mentioned here! I know i will! :D
I've been consciously watching anime for about 15 years now. There's too many to count and I honestly don't feel like listing a million and one names that I really couldn't even remember without hunting through my tapes and DVDs (most of which I've already sold) heh. It's not as if I've not given these things a chance. I've seen some anime by each of these companies and they're all familiar to me, outside of one that Dagger mentioned. In any case, I'm not a big fan of anime anymore and 95% of what I bother to watch doesn't appeal to me at all for whatever reason. Ghibli stuff is pretty much the only thing that has remained a constant interest for me, most likely because of its similiarites to Disney-style work rather than most popular anime lately. -
I wonder if Hollywood would ever consider doing a movie about the burning times. They could bring up Pope Innocent( I think it was X, but I could be wrong), The Witches Hammer and the fact that many of the persecuted weren't actual witches, but more of the type of people who were either feared, someone had a grudge against, or who the church wanted to get rid of.
There are tons of movies that have to do with witch hunts... I don't know if they have to do with "burning times" as you put it, but many have the same story structure as you're suggesting here. I was born and raised Catholic. I went to Catholic schools up until I graduated High School. I was pretty well secured in my faith, I suppose, but somewhere in the early years of High School, things changed. I don't even really recall what they were exactly anymore, but I found myself questioning a lot of my thoughts and what I had been taught for so many years. I flopped around between different religions and philosophies. I never settled on one, it was just really a search for knowledge on the subject, I guess. Trying to find some sort of place. The OTO, La Vey's Satanism, other Christian denominations, Buddhism, etc. I had a brief time where I was basically atheist, but it passed quickly. At this point, I just have my own beliefs that I'm very secure in at this point. Whether or not that anyone else agrees with them doesn't matter to me and I don't generally take the time to explain them. At the core if it, though, I'm mostly just against organized religion in general.

In general, I think what results in these situations is that the woman is emotionally broken to the point that they somehow feel they need this man, no matter how abusive he is. They're more or less given the impression that they can't do any better and this is what they're stuck with. Time and time again, women in these situations go back to these guys. It's not exactly rational, but I doubt anyone in that situation would still be thinking rationally in the first place. Somehow she has to get past some sort of breaking point where she realizes how bad this is for her. In my experience, no one else can really do this but herself. You can tell her how ridiculous she is being a million times over and with any attitude or tone and it will most likely have no effect. Getting her to realize it for herself is always a big ordeal, though.

I saw this when it first hit theaters months back. I'm not a Jack Black fan by any means, but I like his musical taste. The bands referred to in this movie for the most part are awesome. Hell, it even had a Bowie song playing during a key point in the movie... that doesn't happen much. I think what really made this movie was the kids, though. They did a really excellent job. I'm happy they tried to find kids that could actually play and act. Some of them are very talented. I didn't find it all that hilarious, but it was a cute movie. The best scene was when
Jack says "Those kids have touched me and I'm pretty sure I touched them." (or whatever) and all the parents gasp because they think he means sexually.
What made it so funny, though, was that a random little kid in the theater blurted out "Mommy, what does touched mean?" Classic lol.

It's Diamonds and Guns by The Transplants. The album it's on is self titled. There's a sample of it here

I'm not really sure what point you're trying to make, but I'm speaking from my own perspective. It doesn't really matter to me who likes what. The only studio that puts out anime I'm consistently impressed with is Ghibli. I wasn't trying to say that others shouldn't bother naming other companies they feel the same about. -
Ok I watch both of these shows. I find that I enjoy Family Guy better than South Park. My friends and I watch them after we watch my episodes of Smallville. Anywho. Stewie makes me laugh as does Cartman. But the last episode I watched of Family Guy was the one where Stewie and Brian end up glued together. That was kinda funny.
Wow. You're still alive? I've not seen you in forever. Anyway, I don't really care for South Park. I have one DVD of it and that's plenty for me. I used to watch Family Guy all the time on Fox, despite them constantly switching the day and time everytime I got used to it. I don't get Cartoon Network in my room, sadly. I was at my girlfriend's dorm the other day and watched it for the first time in about a year now. It's the episode where Peter finds out about his black ancestors. My favorite part was the Pee-wee's Playhouse parody. At that point I realized how much I missed this show. Thankfully they're making new episodes. No matter what happens, they'll wind up on CN. Even if Fox decides not to air them, which I severely doubt considering the DVD sets have sold something like 2 million copies total.

Anime Studios [Gainax, GONZO, Madhouse, etc.]
Semjaza replied to 0ber0n the Neko's topic in Otaku Central
I don't feel it's worth naming studios to some large number, mostly because I don't think any of them are consistent. The only one I blindly buy anime from is Studio Ghibli and that is it. I've been let down or disappointed too many other times from other companies. -
Well, New Order is mostly known for their fusion of post-punk and dance floor sounds. There's quite a bit of electronic work in their songs, although I'd guess most of it is keyboard based. They were, afterall, a primarily 80s band by most standards. It's probably worth a shot, as you never know heh. And with that, I think I've made too many posts in this thread already lol.
-
They're from Britain, so maybe you'd actually want to give them a chance heh.
-
I believe some of the books you've mentioned (To Kill a Mockingbird in particular) have been brought up in censoring crusades as well. They've not been ignored heh. In any case, these movements can't really prohibit people from buying books themselves. They usually seem to target what is available for reading in public schools. I really don't think it should be an issue, but I can't speak for everyone obviously.
-
Well, I knew them, but perhaps I am a special case? I don't know lol. Anyway, yeah New Order originally did Blue Monday. They're a pretty good post-rock 80s/90s band. Worth checking out beyond Blue Monday. They have a greatest hits CD about that I recommend getting. The European version has better tracks, though.

I wouldn't call anything I've had unusual... but the thing I love that most other people apparently haven't even tried is alligator tail. It's quite honestly the best meat I've ever eaten. It's a shame most places try to give you such tiny pieces that all you can taste is the breading. Good seafood places do it right, though. I've also had buffalo burgers. Much better than cow ones.
-
You're thinking of Orgy. They covered Blue Monday and pretty much stripped it of any of its original meaning and feelings thanks to their sound and attiude. Blue Monday was originally by New Order and so covers really have no bearing on this thread. Also, Alien Ant Farm has had other hits. I'd say just as big as Smooth Criminal. I suppose that depends on where you live and how much one of their particular songs might have been overplayed, though.

Well, I'm not here to defend or attack anyone... nor do I know the circumstances of your issues here (I've never even heard of the usernames brought up - I know I've not banned them, personally). However, I've searched quite a few of the examples listed here as well as in Domon's thread and not one of them has even come up on those forums. I don't really know what can be done when there is no apparent proof on the site you're saying this was taken from. I can't really go after anyone based simply on what you or Domon want to claim about the subject. More proof is needed, honestly. You say that the forums were "just made up" (I am not sure what that means exactly heh), but there are plenty of older posts on there and I find it odd that I'm not finding matches to simple things like "genocide solider" and such that you say were ripped off. In any case, I'm not really defending anything that may or may not have occurred, as I don't know the full story. However, if you could actually cite some of the threads on that Yu-Gi-Oh forum that have these same card descriptions, it would be appreciated. I found some Fantasy League sticky, but it's completely empty... so I can't really base much on it.
-
Well, I know nothing about this... but I'm curious. Are these cards you've come up with yourself or ones that officially exist in Yu-Gi-Oh?
-
What the hell does Meguzi mean anyway? Sounds like some whimpy form of an Uzi, but I'm assuming it's yet another lame use of some Japanese word. At least TMNT is good. I quite like the new series.

I attached an image I saw at IGN earlier today. I'm really impressed by the lighting showed off in this picture. Not to mention the nice laser sight on Leon's gun and the awesome fire effects. Edit -- Added Capcom's pic without the stupid IGN logo.
James makes a good point...I know that the way I speak and the way I type/write are vastly different from each other. My writing style is definitely much wordier than my speaking style lol. I'm far more casual when I'm speaking compared to when I'm typing. It's a rather large difference, I think.
I feel that my typing always comes off too seriously. I type in sentence form on AIM even, something I know most people don't do... although a good amount of OB people do heh. Plus, I just write rather formally. I even type out numbers as words instead of just shortcutting it and avoid contractions. The main reason I do this really stemmed from an attempt to increase my typing speed. I figured the more I did it, the better I'd get. I wind up sticking in a lot of "lol"s just so people don't think I'm serious all the time heh.

The Final Word...should parents have it?
Semjaza replied to Godelsensei's topic in General Discussion
Show Girls was an NC-17 (which really shouldn't have been) rated movie which did fairly well. Well enough considering its rating. Thats the only commercial movie I can think of with that rating.
The production budget (I assume including advertising) for Showgirls was somehow 45 million dollars. It only brought in like 28 million for the US and Canadian markets. I don't know that is doing "fairly well" lol. It is, however, the highest grossing NC-17 movie so far though... which I feel really just further proves my point. All the people who have heard of that movie and it really didn't do well at all. NC-17 is a sales disaster for film companies. -
The Final Word...should parents have it?
In the UK, the Passion of the Christ has an "18" certificate. Meaning that only 18 year olds and over can see it. Regardless of who else is with them. It simplifies things like this a little more..
Movie companies in the US try very hard to avoid getting above a R rating. The next highest is NC-17, which requires you to be at least 17 years old to enter no matter who you are with. The problem with NC-17 is that it significantly prohibits many movies from being commercial successes, so producers and large film companies want nothing to do with it on average. I can't think of many movies offhand that have gotten the rating, let alone any that did well. I can think of several movies (horror in particular) that were held back to edit enough content to avoid the NC-17 rating, though. In Kill Bill, from what I've read, that one fight scene was shown in black and white in the US to avoid the NC-17 rating. In many other countries that was in full color. It's certainly not the most gruesome movie I've seen, but apparently there was an issue with the liberal spilling of gallons of blood and the eye gouging section. I believe it was also an issue with House of 1,000 Corpses. I honestly think your child be at least at a certain level of knowledge on the subject before you send them off to see The Passion. There really is no other reason to see it. -
The Final Word...should parents have it?
Semjaza replied to Godelsensei's topic in General Discussion
In the end, it's really up to the parent, I suppose. I can't tell people what to do with their kids. At the same time, I have to wonder what people are thinking when they bring their toddlers and babies to movies like Starship Troopers, Freddy Vs. Jason and so forth. I suppose they want their children to have nightmares. Something like The Passion is more subjective because, to some people, the message is important to their lives in some sort of faith-based way. Crap like Jeepers Creepers 2 has no message. It has no value. You're bringing your children to see gore and listen to horribly loud noise. I know for some of the more relentless horror films, many theaters require an ID for each ticket. When I saw TCM, they only allowed people over 17 in to see it... despite it being R and not NC-17. Obviously this occurs on a per theater basis considering anyone can get into a R rated film normally as long as they were with someone else who was old enough. I bring these movies up because in each case, other than The Passion, there were a few little kids. I just cannot fathom bringing them to these sorts of movies. If you can't get a babysitter, then see something else or don't go. It also brings up the issue of me having to listen to babies scream and giggle throughout the entirety of a movie I paid $9.50 to see, although that has no bearing on your topic, really. Damn yuppies. -
A SNES emultator would not run a GBA game heh. In any case, OtakuBoards tries to avoid emulation and ROMs in general, so as long as you keep away from giving links and such, we're good. Obviously just plain old discussion isn't a problem lol Sword of Mana is a remake of Seiken Densetsu, a Game Boy game. It was originally released as Final Fantasy Adventure in the US to help its sales numbers. Seiken Densetsu 2 was on SNES and renamed Secret of Mana elsewhere. Seiken Densetsu 3 never officially made it out of Japan. Legend of Mana is of course on the Playstation. I'm not really sure what point you're trying to make other than that people should download games instead of buying them... cmac24, there's honestly some great GBA games out there, so a SP is still worth it in the long run. Just not if you're only interested in Sword of Mana heh. I play my SP more than anything else I own.

Macross Plus comes in a few parts. I don't think you could call it a stand alone movie. Macross II is another case, though. I enjoy that, but it really is the worst of the Macross titles I've seen. If you can get your hands on Macross the Movie: Do You Remember Love? I recommend seeing it. It kind of compresses a good deal of the Macross series into movie form, basically. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is a personal favorite of mine. It improves on the original in basically every department. Grave of the Fireflies is probably my favorite anime film. I recommend everyone see it at some point. It deals with two children who can only rely on eachother during a war. Roujin Z is one I saw a long time ago and finally bought last year. It's about an old man and a machine that takes care of him. The machine gets possessed by the spirit of his dead wife, more or less. I think it's interesting and fun. It's really hectic heh. The Ranma 1/2 movies were my first exposure to Ranma. I've not seen them in years, but you might like to check them out. I've always loved the old man who is obsessed with panties and bras lol. Then you have all the Ghibli movies (which includes Grave of the Fireflies, but that's not from Miyazaki). Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, etc. All awesome. That's all that comes to mind right now.
