1. This doesn't really talk about the type of multiple personalities I expected to read about. Obviously one will act differently depending on what environment they're in at the current time. Most people I know are far more outgoing with their friends than at home... that's why people go out in the first place. I don't find people being more negative and drawn-in at home to be all that surprising considering how many people (mostly teenagers) feel about their home life in the first place, regardless of how it is in reality.
2.
Well, Bad Brains are Hardcore. I mean, Emo is "emotional harcore" in actuality, but I don't really put them in the same boat that much these days. And Hardcore and Punk are pretty different. But Bad Brains is a great band. And so is The Mars Volta.
Emo isn't just "emotional hardcore". That's just a sect of it. They're all related, and thus should all be mentioned, in my opinion. Hardcore wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for punk. I don't want to relegate this to bands to just one section of the sound possible heh. Otherwise we'd be stuck to some of the more popular stuff and this thread would definitely not be as interesting. Besides, people were mentioning hardcore-ish stuff well before I brought up Bad Brains in here. Of course, I've also tried to avoid naming weird stuff that most people in here woudln't even bother to listen to -- especially given the initial post. And in repsonse to your Sex Pistols comment, no one here (that I noticed) said the Sex Pistols invented punk anyway... so why would anyone bother saying it to the contrary? lol Punk evolved from so many other previous rock bands anyway. And since a couple people mentioned them... I really don't think The Mars Volta is all that impressive. They're living off the remnants of At the Drive-In, which I thought was far more talented and had far more potential. I can't see them ever surpassing In Casino Out with what they showed on Deloused in the Crematorium. All good things come to an end, I guess. I don't know that I'd really even consider them (or even At the Drive-In) entirely within any of the genres mentioned here anyway... but that's me. Even the band has called themselves emotional hardcore at times, so what do I know lol.
3. I got that Magic Online starter kit for Christmas and just finally set it up online last night. Basically all the cards you get in the box, you can also use online by entering a code. The $10 joining fee is also waived. The program is pretty nice. It seems to run exactly the same as the stanard single player game which I bought years back (but without the walking sections). The only issue is that the cards they give you for free make it nearly impossible to make a decent 60 card deck... unless you want to use three land types at once. I'll probably buy another pack online just so I can play a little better, but I doubt I'll get that into it. It seems like a fun waste of time, though and I like how you can redeem your online cards for real ones.
4. Yeah, Sirens is the one. They're definitely not trying to be all-hardcore, as you said. There's a few songs where I believe they don't even scream or anything else I equate with the genre lol. I posted in your Fall of Troy thread, by the way. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with Bad Brains. They were one of the inventors of hardcore (if not THE inventors, but it depends on what I read lol -- Black Flag was starting up at around the same time). The story is that these four black jazz players listened to the Ramones, named themselves after one of the songs on it and became what everyone knows them as today. They were basically the fastest and hardest punk band of their time (this was like early 80s, late 70s). Later on they kind of absorbed metal influences among other sounds. What's cool about their style is that they don't really sing about all the angry stuff current hardcore bands do. They actually have positive messages at times. It's all kept together by reggae styles and smooth bits that intersperse themselves into the hardcore sound (there's a long story for all that too, but I won't get into it). Really cool band. I'd recommend them to anyone. They're incredibly important and no one really talks about them anymore, sadly. A band defines hardcore and breaks race barriers (I mean really, who thinks of black men when they think of most punk bands?) and I don't even know anyone else that knows them lol. You think they'd be a bit more on people's minds.
5. The one you picked is from Jin-Roh. I really think that's a nice picture and it works pretty well once it's in use. Looking at them all listed in a post isn't quite the same lol.
6. There's really not too much to get confused about. I've not seen it in quite some time, but the difference between Pai and the Sangeant is made very obvious. You don't really have the issue of random conflicting personalities and it happens at very key moments. I can't really remember how it was broken up, as I can only go by the DVD set I picked up way back. 3x3 Eyes was on the first DVD and the sequel to it was on the second disc. I had already seen the original, which I loved. It's why I bought the DVD set in the first place. I think it was just a couple OVAs, but I'm not positive. It definitely wasn't a long series by any means. You could watch most of it in one sitting. The main issue was the second DVD. It was very obviously done by a different team of animators and the attitude was completely different. I didn't enjoy that anywhere near as much.
7. I figured I'd reply in here instead of in that scary punk/emo thread. I had meant to go download their stuff last week when you first mentioned it and put it in your sig, but this week has been rather hellish. Two of the links there don't work... but I tried the Ghostship demo and the two Live tracks. The first thing I noticed was how incredibly long the titles of the songs were heh. The live tracks were rather surprising because they seemed to be really well recorded and performed despite being live. "The Circus..." has some really nice guitar and drum work. I'm still trying to get used to the screaming, but I have to admit it's not as grating as with most bands of this type. I'm still not sure why heh. I liked Ghostship quite a bit too. The keyboard/organ works really well with the song. I love how the whole thing would get really chaotic and then disolve down into something more mellow. I'd have to say F.C.P.S.I.T.S.G.E.P.G.E.P.G.E.P. is the best of the tracks they had available though. I'll probably get around to buying their CD when I get some cash heh.
8. HIM rocks. I like the wallpaper and think it's rather sucessful. The only thing I would change is a minor one, but I think it kind of affects the composition. I think the wallpaper might look a lot nicer if you used different typefaces for the title and the actual lyrics. Keeping them the same kind of throws it off for me. Nice job.
9. Parents should take a more active role in their children's lives. Fine enough. As people who grew up rather recently, can you honestly tell me that your parents are around you 24/7 and understand what you listen to, read and watch on a constant basis? Of course not. To expect parents to pry that much into their kids' lives is unfeasible and impossible and everyone knows it. As has been stated, popular music already is censored on radio stations. Curses are edited out, some songs are rewritten, some are ignored entirely. However, innuendo often remains. I fail to see how innuendo and implications are worse than the straight foward manner that Stern and his ilk take, however. No small child is going to get most of the innuendo in a song until they reach a certain level of knowledge and at that point they're probably ready to deal with it. Yet everyone can understand the basic, crude nonsense that Stern spits out freely on a very constant basis. Asking to see some girls boobs every few minutes during a few hour show is not really adding to anything. There's no song I've heard that is as straightforward as what Howard Stern or Mancow talk about. It's not really comparable and, in my opinion, the argument doesn't work considering that the music is already censored before it can even hit the air waves. It's already gone through what the FCC expects. Live shows are another story and have to be held on their own accord. It's not as if there are different standards in place for either of them. It's not as if a song can say one thing and Stern cannot get away with saying the same. The fines were for very specific actions Stern had taken; actions that wouldn't have even been in place in a song the FCC allowed on the radio in the first place. People have to remember something imporant here. These rules were already in place. Stern and others chose to break them on a regular basis and now that the FCC is finally cracking down, they have absolutely nothing to ***** about. It doesn't matter what you think of the FCC and their practices at this point -- this is a law matter and that's the law. Stern and others knew this getting into it. In fact, it seems like him and the other DJs that could be at risk are complaining about it less than random people. I think they knew what the consequences are and I can't really feel bad about Stern being fined for things he knows he shouldn't be doing in the first place. A tear for Stern, who makes gobs of money per year doing things he knows he shouldn't technically be getting away with. Anyone in his position is, at the very least, familiar with what goes beyond the line... regardless of how clear the line is in the first place. I'm sure Stern has obliterated it on numerous ocassions. Now, in the aftermath, you can say that these ideas are unfair in the first place. However, when someone willingly and knowingly does this, they can't just ignore the consequences. How someone can attack the FCC for finally doing something that it's supposed to do makes little sense to me... I think it's a different matter entirely to challenge their very existence, but they were in the right in this case. People might as well just get satellite radio... it's free from all this nonsense.
10. Am I the only one that thinks this game looks really damn good? It's certainly not the best looking game ever, but it's far above average. If it were going for the realistic look, I see no reason why it couldn't keep up with the PS2 FF games.
11. I agree and disagree. The market is oversaturated with variations of a singular series. When I go to the local shop, I'm overwhelmed with what seems like a dozen different Spider-Man comics and their various relations. It's hard to sort out which is worth getting and which isn't. Which is the main line and which ones aren't. At the same time, there's a few X-Men lines and they're pretty damn different from one another. Ultimate X-Men has pretty much fallen apart, X-treme X-Men is terrible... The only one worth the time is New X-Men, really. In some ways it makes me glad that there are a few lines, because otherwise I'd miss the awesomeness that is New X-Men... and at the same time, some other random person might prefer the approach of Ultimate X-Men. The problem with the Ultimates line is really that it's just adding to the confusion. The idea of them is to inject some more modern ideas into their respective series, but when there's already several Spider-Man alternatives, for example, adding another one to the mix is simply not going to help matters. What I really disagree with, however, is that there isn't diversity. There may not be enough of it from the major publishers, but it is definitely there. There are comics readily available on every subject I've ever seen a manga try to show. You have to look beyond Marvel and DC in particular... even to the smaller companies under them sometimes. Not every comic is even remotely about a superhero. Some of my favorites have nothing to do with them whatsoever. Manga is popular for several reasons, I suppose. If manga was the only major comic-style here for decades, I'm sure it would be just as tired. Manga is something new for most people and Japanese stuff is simply cool to people. I'm not trying to downplay manga, however, as much of it is rather excellent. However, there is definitely an equal ratio of garbage in the manga market based on my experience. I think one of the major things in manga's favor is its price and distribution model. Most manga comes in small trade paperbacks and with the advent of Tokyo Pop, you're only spending maybe $10 on them total. Most manga sales come from book stores... many book stores don't even sell individual issues of comics at all. So you have $15+ comic compilations selling against cheaper manga that is currently riding a good wave of buzz. I think, despite their smaller size dimensions on average, most manga seem like a better value because their thickness makes up for it. Thicker books always seem larger than taller wider ones, for some reason. I believe it was Marvel that had plans to start putting out books in the size of Tokyo Pop and market them in the same manner. Whether or not this will help, I don't really know. In the end, I think the misconception that Western comics don't go beyond the superhero side of things is what is hurting them though. Superman, Spider-Man and Batman have become such a large part of culture here that that's all people think there is that's being offered anymore... And, really, going to your comic shop and seeing rows of Superman, Spider-Man and Batman comments really do not help kill that stereotype at all. All a comic fan can do, I suppose, is try and get the word out on their favorite titles and make people realize that that is not all Western comics have to offer. That, in fact, there are comics about daily life, comedy, romance, etc. It's what I do, anyway.
12. Screw Twin Snakes, Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life comes out mid-March. I'm not worried about some of the average scores as many magazines never give the series good ones. I still can't figure out why, but I love the games heh. IGN and Gamespot apparently love NG as well. Gamespot in particular gushed all over it. I'm surprised by how long it's supposedly going to last (20+ hours), so I might actually bother renting it. Much better than my indifference before, I suppose lol.
13. Out of extreme boredom, I've made a bunch of avatars for this site. I don't plan on using any of them because I'm quite happy with my current, albeit weird, one. Anyway, here they are. Just a bunch of pictures I plopped into 150x80 spaces and added borders to. Some were cleaned up, some weren't. I guess I'm just putting them here in case someone would like to use one. Please save them and upload them as your avatar if you'd like to use one. If you direct link these, I WILL know... so don't be a jerk. 14.
I was thinking more along the lines of mirroring the Anime Archives. You can't post in closed threads anyway (except for mods), which is what the forum would consist of.[/color']
I knew exactly what you meant, personally... I feel it's a waste of space. I don't think there is a need for a forum of posts showing people what not to do. That's what the rules are for.
15. Cool. I'm glad someone took advantage of me streaming their release off of my site. It let's me avoid just handing out MP3s, which is always a good thing heh. Scarling needs all the sales it can get. I think the only real parallel between JOJ and Scarling is really just Jessicka. Her vocals were really the center point of JOJ and they continue to be now. She has a very distinctive voice. Obviously, as I said, the screaming was cut down substantially... which is better for this band. The writing seems to be just as dark and morbid though heh.

Error

I usually avoid bands with vocals like these, mostly because it's just grating usually. I prefer something a bit more smooth, I guess you can say... but I also like it when the vocalist fits in with what the band is trying to do. Gregg and his angry screaming almost mimics the anger and noise of the music. Musically it's definitely not for everyone. It reminds me of Ministry's harder stuff in some ways, but it goes in another direction. I think after a few listens the beat and stuff start to make a bit more sense... but I suppose some people will never really get into it.
17. I've personally just been deleting threads in my sections that were worthy of being closed. If I feel something needs to be said so that the original poster knows why it was removed, then I PM them. People seem to get the point though. I do agree with you, however, because I think there a bit of it clogging up the anime section in particular heh. I don't think a seperate forum is required though... as people are supposed to read the rules when they register anyway.
18.
Oh and Nintendo Power is a horrible gaming magazine, and is completely biased because the company that reviews the games owns the console and wants to see them sell.
You'd think so, but they consistently give lower scores to games (including their own) than most non-official magazines and sites. There's exceptions, but review wise, I don't think bias plays much of a part in it at all.
19. 1. What was the first anime movie, series or OVA you ever watched? The first was a very long time ago; Robotech. I also saw Macross: Do You Believe in Love? and Vampire Hunter D soon after. This was before my teenage years. 2. Do you feel that time has made you more picky about the titles which you like and/or choose to buy? Time and experience jades pretty much anything. I don't have the same interest in anime that I used to. For the most part, my interest is pretty much dead. There are random exceptions, but classes are still classics. I don't think I'll ever grow tired of Robotech/Macross or other older series like Nadia: Secret of Blue Water. 3. If you had watched some of your current favorite shows when you first got into anime, would you have been able to appreciate them as much as you do now? My current favorite show has actually always been my favorite heh. So I guess I can't really answer this question from that angle. However, current anime overall just really doesn't seem to have the same quality some of the older series exhibited. This isn't nostalgia talking considering I watch these all on a regular basis to this day. I don't really know what that quality is exactly, but it just doesn't seem the same. I guess a portion of it could be attiributed to my general lack of interest in it lately, but there are still exceptions that break through and make me take notice. Hale Nochi Guu is a good example of that.
20. Olga, are you familiar with a band called On the Might of Princes? I don't think they'd really be considered 'hardcore" overall, but there is definitely an influence of it in their music. It's rather aggressive at times and there's certainly enough yelling heh. I'm just curious if I'm the only one here that knows them.

Full House

The worst part about Full House is that it somehow made TV executives think that people actually liked Bob Saget and thought he was funny. It seems like that guy will never go away, but at least he's not on America's Funniest Home Videos doing his lame voice-overs that all sound exactly the same.
22. Appleseed. Again. I own the four collections released as well as the Databook. The Databook is pretty amazing in and of itself because it explains so much about the universe that the manga takes place in. Government, weapons, characters and a detailed timeline. It is incredibly indepth, but I don't expect any less from Masamune Shirow. If you've only seen the anime... please don't ignore the manga because of it. They're incredibly different. The anime, while having a decent main point, is really just not very good at all. The manga has so much more going for it and is really fleshed out. Much more enjoyable.
23.
did u c Nintendao power magazine???[/COLOR']
Whoa there, buddy. You're going to have to improve your post quality by a massive amount if you ever hope to stay around here. Even a little more detail as to why you're asking about NP would be helpful... this isn't a chat room, more words are needed. Thanks.
24. Not to mention the rules and FAQ. Please read them. If you have any other issues with getting that to work, just PM me and I'll help you out.
25. Seems more like a super short synopsis and a general "people may think this about it" article than a review heh. Sounds interesting. I had to read that a few times to even understand what he was trying to say. He crams a lot of information in there and the names sure don't help matters. Might be the first anime DVD I bother to buy since Laputa was released.
