1. I know I've already named this song, but I'm adding the lyrics. It's so cool (I can't believe I said that). The whole CD (of the same name) has so many gospel background vocals and I love them. So yeah, Young Americans: They pulled in just behind the bridge He lays her down, he frowns "Gee my life's a funny thing, am I still too young?" He kissed her then and there She took his ring, took his babies It took him minutes, took her nowhere Heaven knows, she'd have taken anything, but All night She wants the young American Young American, young American, she wants the young American All right She wants the young American Scanning life through the picture window She finds the slinky vagabond He coughs as he passes her Ford Mustang, but Heaven forbid, she'll take anything But the freak, and his type, all for nothing He misses a step and cuts his hand, but Showing nothing, he swoops like a song She cries "Where have all Papa's heroes gone?" All night She wants the young American Young American, young American, she wants the young American All right She wants the young American All the way from Washington Her bread-winner begs off the bathroom floor "We live for just these twenty years Do we have to die for the fifty more?" All night He wants the young American Young American, young American, he wants the young American All right He wants the young American Do you remember, your President Nixon? Do you remember, the bills you have to pay Or even yesterday? Have you have been an un-American? Just you and your idol singing falsetto 'bout Leather, leather everywhere, and Not a myth left from the ghetto Well, well, well, would you carry a razor In case, just in case of depression? Sit on your hands on a bus of survivors Blushing at all the afro-Sheeners Ain't that close to love? Well, ain't that poster love? Well, it ain't that Barbie doll Her heart's been broken just like you have All night You want the young American Young American, young American, you want the young American All right You want the young American You ain't a pimp and you ain't a hustler A pimp's got a Cadi and a lady got a Chrysler Black's got respect, and white's got his soul train Mama's got cramps, and look at your hands ache (I heard the news today, oh boy) I got a suite and you got defeat Ain't there a man you can say no more? And, ain't there a woman I can sock on the jaw? And, ain't there a child I can hold without judging? Ain't there a pen that will write before they die? Ain't you proud that you've still got faces? Ain't there one damn song that can make me break down and cry? All night I want the young American Young American, young American, I want the young American All right I want the young American ----------------- I love this lyric -- "We live for just these twenty years Do we have to die for the fifty more?" And many others. There are some really great parts in this song.
2. I have no already standing bias against Orland Bloom, but I honestly just was not impressed by him in this movie. He, as a character, is rather dull in my opinion. His acting is tolerable, but a lot of it just seems to be stilted. I understand the fact that his character is obviously not confident of himself in general, but I just don't think the character was pulled off that well. I didn't care about him. It didn't help that he, and basically everyone besides Rush, was so easy to ignore in Depp's prescence. People always ignore Rush (Barbossa) in these threads. He was one of the best aspects of the movie.
3.
Originally posted by maladjusted Anyways...it doesn't bother me when people ask me to say something in Korean. They're not purposely trying to annoy you, they're just curious.
Exactly. I don't know how many people here appreciate the level of logic you always seem to add to these threads, but I sure as hell do. I am glad it doesn't bother anatema. I think she'd hurt me otherwise heh. I took Latin for three years, I sure as hell cannot speak it... so I don't have another usable language I can play around with. Thus I just find it cool that others can. That's about all there is to it.
4. I think the main point is that this could all be posted in the Literature forum with ease. It's basically making a whole other section for more books... and what if someone wants to talk about other manga? We have to tell them to go elsewhere because this is for Shonen Jump only? There'd basically be two manga forums in a sense, which just strikes me as odd. I see your point, but the idea of this forum seems redundant... but that's my opinion.
5. My only real issue with your layouts on myOtaku is really that they totally take over the page. It seems really strange to me to block out most everything signifying the site you're running this on. What's there looks good. I could do without the "You're not using IE!" popup on the one, but yeah heh. I like the designs and use of color. I'm really into the first one, particularly. Unfortunately a lot of the feel is lost because so much of myOtaku itself pops up below it. Nice job otherwise though.
6. I open doors for anyone. I don't care if it is some kid, a lady or an old man. I'm not in such a hurry that I'd ignore them and I don't see what could possibly be "outdated" when you're simply being nice. I'm not thinking "Hey, here's a simple minded female member of the human race. In order to show my obvious intelligence and superiority, I think I should open this door and hold it open for her to enter the building. That'll teach her her place." I just do it because it's nice when people do it for me, honestly.' Hell, I even have random people hold the door open for me, so I don't see how sexism can be added into the equation. Though I don't want a person not even attempting to hold the door for me when I'm two feet away, either. I try not to do it for others heh. What's next? People being annoyed if I give my seat on the train to an old woman or a pregnant lady?
7. Well, I meant more of a specific Manga section as that's what he seemed to be asking for heh.
8. I like this and I'm not going to sit and tell you what I think works or doesn't. I think people are being a bit too picky on the actual artwork in this case... I don't know how someone's personal style can be "wrong" in and of itself, but whatever. I will say, however, that the last thing I'd personally recommend with coloring in images via these programs is using the fill tool. The fill tool is not a good item in general. It's good for large fields and rare situations, but I wouldn't say it is good for most drawings. You managed to pull it off here well enough, but I wouldn't recommend it for anything you do that's more complex. You're best off creating an outline of the character using a selection tool and playing with that. Filling it in with whatever, mostly the brushes. I find this comes out the best in the end. However, I think the main issue is simply the outline of black around here. There's things you can play with in any image program to adjust this (levels is good in Photoshop, no clue in PSP) and help make it less of an issue. In some cases, you might just have to retrace that in the program by hand... The pen tool should become your best friend in terms of drawing lines, shapes and actual selections. Master that thing. Of course, these are just my suggestions and you're free to do as you like
9. I'd say that nearly every last thing I've ever designed as been at a really weird hour of the night. I very rarely work on anything during daylight hours, that's for sure. Usually very late at night until it's basically well into the next morning. Such is the case with Wrapped in Plastic, Slow Nerve Action and a few of my fanlistings. I think 1-Up Gaming was an exception though. Anything I basically can consider an "original" work of my own. Stuff like wallpapers I did for theOtaku (Dragon Ball Z, Outlaw Star and Yu-Gi-Oh) can really be done at any time, although they took me several hours each to do heh. So yeah, timing is crucial for me. Other than that, little affects me.
10. I don't see why this would be created especially since a general "manga" forum would make much more sense and most obviously would be far more active. Whether or not that will be done, however, I have no idea.
11. Edward Scissorhands is my second favorite movie ever made. I love it for so many reasons. Burton's directing was simply awesome in it. The use of color, timed events and so forth really add to its impact. The music by Elfman is among some of his most memorable too. They use several of the songs from this film in commercials around the holidays all the time. All of the important actors in this film were excellent. Winona and Deep in particular... although obviously Depp even more so. Depp is, in my opinion, the best actor there currently is. He doesn't even need to speak in this movie to give a better performance than most any actor I can think of. He's just amazing. I think I have a non-sexual crush on him (and David Bowie heh). This movie always gets to me a little bit too. The ending is really heartfelt I think, although in a simple way. The idea that
Edward gives off this feeling of finally being complete when she tells him she loves him. Like all of the hardships he went through in his life finally made sense, if only because they led him to this conclusion.
I really, really love this movie.
12. This happens mostly because once someone is banned, they create a new account nearly right after and try to come back. Some people are given that chance, some are not. In the case of SageBrushFire, it was Sixthcrusifix. This person was giving people a hard time in general, and thus Charles (I think) finally diposed of him. Sage had things in his profile that were obviously in reference to the person who banned him, so I think it's safe to say there was little reason to let him try again. There's a reason for everything. terra's reason is also surprisingly a common one.
13. Azure -- I'd say around $30 with tax. On average, at ANY store in Chicago any good anime sells for about $24.99. Every so often I see something for $19.99, but only things like Akira or Metropolis at Target or anime I'm not interested in. The bundle stuff with free gifts is generally well over $30, based on all I've seen. The only things I've ever seen for less than $20 include anime like Miyuki-chan in Wonderland and Magic Users Club, which aren't exactly great. I know a lot of people here buy from those cheap anime websites that sell HK versions, but I don't. I've rarely come across anime cheaper than these prices at normal stores unless it's some fluke. When I can go to the store and buy a brand new movie out of Hollywood for like $15 new, I think $25 is a bit much. I understand the reasoning for the prices, but I sure cannot afford as many.
14. The Gollum part was definitely the best heh. Nice job. I would really like to see those fights animated, although I know it'd probably be way to much to ask. It's very time consuming.
15. My girlfriend listens to them. She seems to listen to a lot of the groups you name here, although I can't really post in every thread and just be like "I know nothing about them, but she likes them!" heh. That said, I'm sure I'll be subjected to them at some point... Happens with all her other stuff.
16. IP bans on vB can be far more reaching than people realize. It depends how exact of an IP you ban. The problem with opening up the field is that you'll also wind up banning people you don't want to. It's not an easy decision. In any case, I even realized who you were. I'm almost definite that Charles knew and I am sure James might have (although it's been so long, they might not remember -- they have more important things to worry about. I think you're one of those people they wound up being lenient on. A lot of people like to say how strict this place is, but quite a few people get a several chances to make up for it. The fact that you're telling everyone that you have even more accounts is rather asinine. In any case, I'm closing this. It seems more fitting for a personal site... and it is already debasing into a discussion over the ideas of banning. If James or Charles want to add to this or pursue other actions, that's their decision.
17. I cannot even afford DVD series half the time. DVD prices on anime are still rather insane on average... and while I understand that they appeal to a still somewhat niche market and these prices are required to turn any decent profit and pay off licensing fees, I still wish they were lower. So as such, I wind up with the first DVD in a set and don't wind up watching the next one until I can actually convince myself that I should drop the $30 to buy it. So I basically watch all of my anime DVDs with large gaps between them. I wouldn't do a marathon, even if I could. I don't even bother with tapes anymore.

Hot Hot Heat

My girlfriend went on and on about them. I barely remember what they sound like anymore, but I think they had an offbeat post punk sound. I'm not really sure though... they weren't my thing.
19.
Originally posted by Dan L Maybe so, but believe me, "communist" is generally a very rare word to enter conversation, and Marxism and Karl Marx are not particularly common knowledge among those who took history at school for as long as they have to.
Well, I must say that communism isn't exactly a topic of discussion against most peopl of our age group in the US either. We don't have righteous debates on the various forms of good-in-theory, poor-in-reality governments heh. Maybe there are these peopel, but I've yet to meet them lol. But you know, I honestly can't say that a lot of schools here in Chicago cover these issues either. I barely remember this subject even being broached in my classes and considering the US's obsession with communism at certain points in its history... I can totally understand why a school elsewhere would barely bring it up. In any case, I'm vastly amused by this thread and the posts made by the people who were supposedly going to inform the rest of the board of how intelligent they are based on so much misinformation. Good points were brought up, sure, but I think it's safe to say that for the most part it didn't amount to much.
20. I never understood why people are suprised it's a Disney film. They've put out far worse than that through themselves and their various subdivisions.
21. The first time I saw this the theater was packed. We had to sit in the second row. I was so close that I literally had to move my entire head around to look at specific parts of the movie. Despite that, I enjoyed it. Johnny Depp is awesome, I think. Without him and Rush, I don't think I would have cared about this film very much. Depp can save the worst movies, although he seems to rarely pick poor projects as it is. That's not to say this is a bad movie, I just think he made it that much better. My main issue, for the most part, was simply that I found most of the other characters extremely dull. The action scenes made up for it at least.
22. I dated a girl who went to that university in Athens. Was rather hard considering I live way out in Chicago. It's not a bad school if you're stuck, honestly. I think you'd probably have a good time. That said, it can be hard leaving your friends. I originally went away for college my first semmester. About 7 hours away. I'd honestly say that I became even closer to my best friends back in Chicago simply because all we could actually do was talk. It was beneficial and helped me sort out who I should care about and who I shouldn't. In some ways, college is a way to move on. Some people will never mature past high school mindsets. It's nice to finally get a perspective on it all.
23. Yeah, I live in Chicago. In the actual city, though. It's nice when people mention that they're from around here. Seems very rare on OB heh. Those are both decent schools, from what I've seen. Hopefully you'll be able to get into one or the other no problem. Would be a nice career choice.
24.
Originally posted by wiccansamurai Meh, I want to be a manga artist, but my mom says no. So I'll go to Columbia or the Art institute in Chicago, probably do something with animation. It was my mom's ideas to go to these, but I'm still not mentioning animation for now.
Do you live in Chicago, then?

Big Fish

I've never heard a thing about Carrey being considered as Wonka. Not once. In fact, the only people who could have been casted that would have been taken seriously back when the casting rumors were around were Depp and Marilyn Manson. In fact, Depp even went so far as to say he'd skip the part if Manson could have it. They're good friends. I actually think Manson could have been fitting if they wanted to take a darker route, one Burton almost ensures as it is. Manson is a rather good actor (he's been in a few films and has a sizable part in the upcoming Party Monster). Depp is obviously the best choice in any circumstance though. The guy is almost a chameleon. He can play anything and look like nearly anyone. In any case, a lot of Burton movies have a massive reliance on color. Like mentioned, Edward Scissorhands. It contrasted the difference between Edward's dark, drab and depressing home and the pastel, utopian, Leave It to Beaver quality in the town surrounding him. Burton has pointed this out in the past. I think another thing they really rely on is timing. There are many instances where the people in the town in Edward Scissorhands did things in tandem. Such as pulling out of their driveways. This also comes up in Big Fish. Big Fish is worth seeing even for non-Burton fans. It really transcends the style you expect from him.
