1. I was at the top of my class last year.... 4.28 GPA, on a 4.0 scale... I don't know, I guess school is just easy for me... I don't study a lot, I just do (most) of my homework.... I'm a good test-taker....::shrugs::
2.
Originally posted by Anna A'ight look, where does it say anywhere that God's 'day' is 24 hours? He is the very creator of our time, and 6 days could be anything; 6 minutes, 6 years, 600,000 years, etc. A day to us could be a blink of His eye. So if one day is one blink or whatever, imagine how long a day would be 'His' time. All in all, the universe etc etc. probably was created in millions and millions of years- to us. Time has no meaning when you're immortal, think about it. The whole 6 days thing was probably given for a small analogy of what really was, like after a couple-thousand-years segment He created this one thing; or one 'day'. And so on.
Yeh, but everywhere in Genesis, when it talks about a 'day' it is referring to a standard day, not several hundred thousand years. "It was evening, and it was morning, the first day..." Not, "It was evening and morning and evening and morning, and evening and morning again, and what do you know, that durn morning kept coming, and after a while, a day had passed..." Now, sometimes a bad day at school feels like several hundred years, but that's got nothing to do with this....
3. Well, this is something we've discussed during Theology Class..... God created the world in six days. But he created it with the illusion of age. If everything had been spiffy and new, no one would have been able to survive. So he created fully-grown trees, adult animals, fertile soil, etc. You see the same thing when he created Adam and Eve as adults.... Note to AJ2K1 4 Life: We believe that God rested on the seventh day--not because HE needed to, but because he knew WE did. Considerate of Him, ne?
4. Darth Vader....Just...because... He would, that's all....
5. I was curious as to whether or not any of my answers were correct...
6. Yeeps! Sorry, Zero! I've just been kinda worn out, what with school and all....
7. And I can tell you with 100% confidence that I have not. It's just who I am.
8. Go to profile, then edit options...it's toward the bottom...
9. I have neither a pic, nor a scanner...
10.
Originally posted by James Cera: Thanks for your latest reply. I'm glad that you didn't flame me, as I thought that my statement would have been very contentious. Your response proves to me that you can think with an open mind...and that you are really a reasonable person. I haven't spoken to you much on these boards...even though we've both been here for a long time. But in a way, this religion thread has allowed me to notice yet another great member of the boards. :)
It's done more than that.... I was a little surprised when I first saw this thread. I didn't expect it to go very far. But the truth is, we've been able to have an intelligent conversation/debate about a slightly uncomfortable subject without anyone getting too upset, or going off topic. It's good to know that people here respect each other enough to say they disagree with someone, and explain why in a mature way. And James: I would never flame someone simply because of a difference of opinion or belief. As for the rest...I'm flattered.
11.
Originally posted by James I don't necessarily agree with the Big Bang Theory. However, it is the most logical explanation thusfar. Oh and as a side note to Cera: I will call creationism rubbish, because that's what it is. It has been disproven many, many times throughout history. Even mainstream religions no longer hold to the belief of creationism. You should definitely read "Telling Lies for God". It actually goes through the history of creationism and why it has been drisproven and subsequently dumped by most large churches.
James, you are one terrific debator... My school team could use someone like you....;) I shall be sure to look for that book on my next visit to the library. Although I'd better tell you that I'm not much for nonfiction... I'll make a point of reading it. Again, I'm going to ask.... Has anyone read the Ishmael books? They aren't a Christian series--in fact, they could almost be considered anti-Christian-- but I found them very thought-provoking.... I urge anyone with the slightest bit of interest to read them...
12.
Originally posted by Desert Shadow Umm.. I'm afraid to show off 'em all, cuz peeps will jes' think i've got a big ego. But if you request i can show a few new ones...
I'm requesting....does that count...?
13. The truth is.... I don't swear. (Midwesterner here...LoL) I'm a pretty naive little kid, sometimes.... I didn't even KNOW most of the swear words till about seventh or eighth grade... What can I say, I live a sheltered life... I don't feel comfortable using curse words. I find them rude, and unnecessary. One of my favorite quotes: "The frequent use of swear words is a sure sign of a small vocabulary." One of my very good friends used to say that. I don't know where he got it from originally. I use other words... scorch...("Scorch it!"), chocolate...(many thanks to Ginny... --"What the chocolate?")..crum, and a few others...
14.
Originally posted by zanza But that really serves no purpose. Here's a more in-depth analogy, perhaps you'll understand this one - A person is standing behind you. You do not know he is there, completely unaware of his existance - you do not "believe" he is there because you don't know of it. (This is the equivalent of being alive. The person whom you don't know behind you is the equivalent of hell) Now let's say that person reaches out and punches you. This is the equivalent of dying and going to hell. You never believed the person (hell) was there, but it still got you in the end. If you'd like to debate that one be my guest, but I don't think it can be done. Just because you don't believe something doesn't mean it doesn't exist - I don't believe in aliens, but that doesn't mean they don't exist at all. I just don't believe they do. When they beam me up and probe me, well, I'll be darned.
You know, that actually makes sense to me.
15. Forget the theory part...it's just something I threw in there because of the definition my current science teacher is making us learn... I know they aren't the same... Just forget the theory part.... You're confusing me, now, too....
16. Welcome back. Erm...enjoy the new boards, I guess....
17.
Originally posted by Transtic Nerve Perhaps you should look up the meaning of the word theory... A theory cannot be duplicated because it's a THEORY! A mere opinion.... not a fact, there is no experimenting before theory. The Scientific Method states that one has a theory, one observes, one then acts on that and experiments... A theory is just a thought and the Big Band Theory is just that.... The same goes for evolution :) It's all theorys.... in fact one can say religion is a theory, cause technically it is... it hasn't been prooven, and it's just basically an opinion of someone or a group of people.... so technically it does fall into the category of theory, but more so in the category of belief... which are fairly similar.
Yeh, my science teacher has a different definition for it, and I gotta learn it or I'm gonna fail. ;) As for the rest, isn't that what I just said? Evolution, Big Bang Theory, Special creation...all beliefs that can't be proven. Ya gotta have a heck of a lot of faith to believe any of them.
18.
Originally posted by James Yes, but you can't compare the two. "Hell" is something created by religion -- it is simply not a proven fact of life. Whereas ice cream is a proven fact. Religion, for the most part, isn't about fact (especially if you look at creationism, which is just plain rubbish). It's more about a frame of mind.
Point One: I believe in that rubbish. I respect your views, please refrain from calling mine garbage.... Point Two: Whatever your belief as to the beginning of the world, it is a "religion." Don't tell me that evolution and the Big Bang theory are scientific. Scientific theories and laws must be able to be duplicated and observed. You cannot observe the Big Bang Theory in a lab, it cannot be duplicated and tested. The same goes for evolution, and special creation. Point Three: The words "ice cream is a proven fact" sound bloody funny when taken out of context. ;)
19. 1. one chace out of twelve, so....February? 2. IM_GENGAR...? 3. No clue.... 4. Lord Hyraken? Or am I thinking of someone else? 5. little 't'

21.
Originally posted by Alexander The answer should be obvious.
Should be. But the truth is.....::shrugs::
22. Well, I've not really read Mere Christianity... I mean to... it's on a bookshelf somewhere.... But I really do love The Chronicles of Narnia and the Space Trilogy. (Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, That Hideous Strength.) They are all very good books--regardless of your views on religion--and I urge anyone who hasn't to read them. On another note, Has anyone here read the Ishmael saga, by...uh...Daniel Quinn? Very interesting....
23.
Originally posted by Desert Shadow Ooo, thats right, i had fergot... This is one of my favorites.. :D http://www.desertshadow.homestead.com/files/CriticGRAY.jpg
heh...I love it...
24. Eh....I can hold grudges for a long time. It's not something I'm necessrily proud of... I can forgive some things immediately, but people have done things to me that I don't think I'll ever truly forgive them for....
