School keeps me busy. I don't think I ever really studied consistantly for any class until Algebra II/Trig in high school, and since then the only class I consistantly studied for was Short Calculus in college. All the liberal arts type classes (art, writing, English, languages, history, etc.) have always been very easy for me. (Well, that's not entirely true. I didn't understand the difference between adjectives and adverbs until I was in seventh grade, but other than that I was good.) I've never considered school a place to be "challenged," and maybe that makes me a little spoiled. But I didn't realise until I was in eleventh grade that classes might be consistantly difficult, and that I might enjoy that. All of my high school classes (save the Trig class I already mentioned) were tailored for the lowest common denominator. Class, for me, has rarely been something that I go to and pay attention in. Generally, it's somewhere I go to take up space, and I spend the time drawing, writing letters or stories, or daydreaming. My high school was very small, and there was very little variation you could have in your schedule. Freshman year was almost identical to sophmore year. Junior and Senior year weren't much different. There were two AP options (Junior year History, and Senior year English), and there was a little variety in the classes that fulfilled the science requirement. You could choose between Spanish and German for a language class. What did I think about school? It was just a system that I had to get through, and I knew how to do it. College is a bit different, but mostly because the classes I'm taking require a lot of participation (skits, presentations, etc.) I don't hate it or anything.

Me mum's a nurse in the local ER... and Drix is right, you would not believe the morons who think they have an "emergency" and show up, wasting everyone's time (and space). I laugh when she tells us about the latest (nameless, faceless) woman who came in because her child had a cold, but inside I'm seething. Don't these people have anything better to do? Don't they watch television? If your otherwise healthy child has a cough and a runny nose, you go to the store and buy a bottle of cherry Robitussin. You do not go to the emergency room. Of course, my mom didn't take me to see a doctor until I'd had pneumonia for a month, so perhaps my family is the one with a skewed perspective. =] I don't have anything against hospitals. I've never been to one for an extended length of time... for myself, anyway. (I did get stitches when I was very small, but I barely remember that.) Funnily enough, my time at hospitals mostly has to do with my sister--she broke her leg up pretty good one year, shattered her femur in a bicycle crash. She was ambulanced in, but my two brothers and I (19 mo, 8 yrs, and 12 yrs, respectively) had to wait in the waiting room forever--eventually my dad took us home, but I think he went back to the hospital after we were sleeping. Anyway, the sister unit wound up in traction for a long time (and in a full lower-body cast for even longer), so I spent a lot of time visiting her at the hospital that year. I think she missed the first quarter of school. That bike crash was quite the landmark even for her.

About a month ago, Studio Ghibli announced its next film, which is to be based off of Ursula K. LeGuin's Earthsea books. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=8021 http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/earthsea/ Is anyone here a fan of the series?
i cant even find inking pens by my house :(
I find that hard to believe. Any art store or office supply store will have at least some variety of pen that can be used for "inking." The silver pen there can be found anywhere--even Target and Walmart, and probably Walgreens, as well--that sells office supplies, and it works just fine for inking. Ballpoint, good feel, nice wet ink that dries matte black. They come in different widths (and colors, for that matter), and they work just fine.
Ummm...lots of replies...^^ Well anyways, I ink on the exact same paper I drew on. And I actuallypress kinda hard using my pens :animesigh 'Cause when I used to ink with ballpoint pens or gel pens (which was up until like.......last year...) I used to press really hard, same thing for drawing in pencil. Guess I better loosen up on that and practice, I usually only ink the drawings I have that takes up a whole page with scenary and everything. I hardly ever use .005, since I press so hard, the ink doesn't come out too good... does everyone else ink their drawings on another piece of paper?? I have a lightbox, so I guess I can try it out,but like...I'm not sure, since I'm not posting this from my house right now, doesn't sakura pens go through the paper??
Just practice drawing more lightly. =] And as for what I ink on... Usually, I will draw a picture, scan it, mess with the options until I have a very light version of what I scanned, and then print off a couple copies. I ink/color those. It works great. You still have your original sketch intact, and you have three or four "ghost" copies (on fresh, unpenciled paper) that you can use if you want to try a couple different coloring styles for the same image. Sojio, you need to read our rules before you continue posting. Double-posting is not allowed here. You can edit a previous post if you wish to add more. When you start a thread, you need to put careful effort into setting a good example for the following posts. This means that you need to being your threads with exceptional post quality. I think I'm going to close this, because each Ghibli film has its own thread (you may check the official Thread Directory Sticky at the top of this forum to find it), and of the Ghibli threads I've seen, this has the least potential. There are other general threads about Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, although they are not listed in the thread directory. Please use the search function to find them. Thread closed.
So do you have to watch it in japanese to be a real fan?
Only if you're annoying and elitist or feel like sitting through a series listening to high-pitched, whiny Japanese females is a mark of honor. =]
I have been wanting to take part in the whole cosplay thing for quite some time now, but it just hasn't been in my budget. However, Lately I have had some money left over and wish to take part in an upcoming event dressed as the oh-so-popular Kakashi. I currently have the entire outfit, as well as a Sharingan Eye contact, but there is a snag. I can't seem to make a realistic looking scar. I have heard of a few differant things to try, but it makes my eye burn even when I don't get anything in it and it's not up to my standards. Does anyone have any advice on a few things I could try?
Most places sell some kind of 'scar putty' around halloween, although in my experience it's nothing but a pain. (Not to mention that it's not exactly mid October.) I suppose if it comes right down to it, you could always just slice yourself... but I don't particularly recommend that. =] There's certainly no shame in just using face paint, either (or even normal makeup). If you've got a friend who's willing to draw on your face (and really, what good friend wouldn't jump at the opportunity to put make up on you?), he or she could probably pull off a nice looking 2D scar with some lip pencils and eyeliner. (You might want an artistically-inclined person for that, of course.) If you want 3D, you're going to want to look into putty (or an online recipe like this).

Tsurigane, you are only allowed to have one non-smiley image in your signature, and it may not exceed the 500 pixels across or 100 pixels in height. Please remove one of your images or find a way to combine the two that is within our rules. I'm not sure why you feel the need to maim cuddly animals. I'd offer some criticism (why is the top half of the bunny's head missing, when only the ears are lying on the ground next to it?), but I think it's pretty clear that you only intend these to be doodles. So, um... have fun.

Dream Hunters was beautiful. I have been meaning to look into Amano more after reading that at the bookstore last year, but I have yet to do so. This thread may be just the spur I need.

I have to say that Milly from Trigun is adorable. She's not physically pretty, or even very cute, but it's her nature that makes her so likeable. She's sweet, innocent, loyal, and completely unsubtle. It cracks me up every time she whips out that ginormus gun, and she seems completely unfazed by everything that happens to her and Meryl. She's just as happy washing windows or digging a well as she is flirting with Wolfwood or dining out with Meryl. She's almost painfully (and often annoyingly) optimistic, but she's so genuine that I can't help but like her.

Anime If you could be in any anime or manga what would it be?
Sara replied to HeartStopper's topic in Otaku Central
When posting in this thread, please remember to give reasons for your answers! Not everyone will be familiar with the anime you choose, for example. And even two fans of the same anime may have completely different reasons for choosing it. Let us know why you choose the anime you do. A couple sentences would be wonderful. As it is, this thread is on the edge of acceptability. I think it could be very interesting, but there are two problems. 1.) Right now it is not interesting, because too many reasons given are so simple and bland. 2.) If the average post length becomes any shorter, the thread will need to be closed. There are some wonderful examples of posts in this thread. Stark's and Ikillion's posts come to mind. As always, whether or not this thread remains open is up to you. -
I think I am going to have to comply with Avenged666fold's wishes. While I think this could be a very interesting thread, the post quality is painful, the opening question doesn't make any sense, and editing everything to make sure this is up to scratch is too much effort for the end result. If someone would like to recreate this thread, they may do so. However, if it starts out anything like this one did, I'm going to delete it on the spot. It's imperative that the first post in any thread sets a good example for the posts to come.

My favorite anime series are Haibane Renmei and Trigun. (The fact that these are two of the extremely few anime that I have watched in entirety may have something to do with that.) They are completely unlike each other, but I enjoy them both. Haibane Renmei starts out as something of a "slice of life" show. It takes place in a walled town, which no one is allowed to leave. A girl named Rakka arrives there, and learns that she is a "Haibane," a youth with wings and a halo. The series follows her as she slowly settles in to her new life. It's very slow-paced, particularly during the first six episodes. Many, many things are left unexplained, and by episode seven the dark undertone of the series is plainly evident. It's very thought-provoking, and it's a wonderful thing to watch if you like theorising. There's no action, unless you count a scene or two in the very last episode. Trigun, of course, is the same Trigun that everyone is already familiar with. It's action-packed, it's funny, and by the second half of the series, it even has a plot! Very exciting. Vash is endearing. I know Dags has said she doesn't care for the archetype ("awesome warrior/assassin goes hippie and won't kill anyone"), but I just finished watching the series with my friend and I quite enjoyed it. I guess the only similarity the two shows have is that they both take a darker turn about halfway in. Anyway, I enjoyed them both. Further posts that do not provide reasons for the choices will be deleted. -Lore

Nope. But then, I've only seen one episode. There's already a thread about Inuyasha. If you go to the stickied Thread Directory, you should be able to find like-minded people. And a word to the wise--"I love inuyasha, don't you?" is not generally the level of post quality that we look for in a normal post. The first post in a thread is held to even higher standards of quality, because subsequent posts tend to go downhill from the original. Please read our rules. Enjoy your stay at OtakuBoards.

Anime The perfect date with an anime character
Sara replied to cruxisseraphim's topic in Otaku Central
Right now, this thread is not about "The perfect date with an anime character." It is one-line, embarrassed admissions of animated crushes, with little or no explanation for the choice. This is not the type of thread that we encourage on OtakuBoards. I am deleting the offending posts, and hopefully this thread will start afresh. Don't be offending if your post is deleted, and please feel free to repost a more detailed answer to the original question. -Lore -
A valiant effort, Stuart, but I'd say the personal attack was his last strike. Thread closed. And good riddance.

I feel that the older I get, the less age difference will matter to me. Having said that, I'm in my first "dating relationship" right now. My boyfriend is two years older than me, but that hardly ever occurs to me. I think right now I would be uncomfortable dating someone who was a.) still in high school, or b.) no longer in college. When I say this, I am talking about both age and situation. I suppose the age wouldn't bother me so much as the difference in worlds. That would put a strain on the relationship quite apart from any difference in birth years.
Correction, anime is japanese animation and only japanese animation. The animation in russia or korea or america is not called anime. Anime only mean japanese cartoons, so your statement is incorrect and it is incorrect to say japanese anime, it doesnt make any sense, anime is japanese and only japanese.
Begging your pardon, but you can't "correct" my opinion. It doesn't work that way.
I would be perfectly comfortable (at some point in the future, assuming that it's necessary) qualifying a show as "Japanese Anime," "Korean Anime," "American Anime," or, I dunno, "Italian Anime."[/font']
It seems to me that as anime grows in popularity outside of Japan, more studios will begin to emulate the styles and themes that we associate with anime. Regardless of the origins of the word, I believe that it will (and indeed, has already) taken on meanings outside of strictly "Japanese animation." Thus, as I said, I would be fine specifying that something were "Japanese anime" or "French anime," should two such categories arise.

I don't know a thing about this kind of stuff, but it looks great to me. The only thing I can think of is to make more of a cheekbone (not necessarily very pronounced, but just so that we can see the way it effects the rest of the face--maybe make the eyes deeper set (the bottom left one, for instance, would benefit from that, I think), for instance? Of course, I have no idea what that entails, heh. Sorry I can't help more.

The post quality in this thread sucks. I'm sorry to say it, but it does. I'm going to give it one chance to improve. Read carefully. If you are going to post in this thread, you need to elaborate on your decision or the lack thereof. Hyper one and two line posts are not acceptable. Not even on Christmas. Sorry, guys.

If anyone even thinks the words "comic sans," I will personally hunt him down and castrate him with a spoon. I don't know what I would do to a female, but believe me, it will be unpleasant.

Right now, anime is that which is animated and originates from Japan. A lot of people are also fine with throwing in American shows (a la Teen Titans) that they think show enough Japanese characteristics. I think I consider it to be both a style and a source. At the moment, when I refer to anime, I mean Japanese animation. However, I would be perfectly comfortable (at some point in the future, assuming that it's necessary) qualifying a show as "Japanese Anime," "Korean Anime," "American Anime," or, I dunno, "Italian Anime." What qualifies something as "anime style" is a good question, and JaredThaJa is right that you can't definitively talk about "anime style" until you've decided what, exactly, it is.
