Frankly, I've noticed that it's becoming far more of an insult to be referred to as a "jock" or "prep" than it is to be called "nerd," "dork," or "geek."

Your posts in this thread are bordering on the incoherent, and if you don't adjust, you may be banned. Kagomefruitcup, please make use of end punctuation. (Periods, exclamation points, etc.) Capitalise your I's, and try to minimise the netspeak (ppl, dis, 2, etc.) While I understand that this style can be common in chat rooms, the beauty of a message board is that speed of typing is not an issue. Narutobleachfan, your posts would be wonderful if you used more punctuation. As it is, what I've quoted is one big run-on sentence. It gets hard to follow, and leaves the reader short of breath. Please consider integrating some commas or periods into your paragraphs. I think everyone involved would be pleased.

40 pages? I don't think I've seen many threads with 40 pages, even in the AL. ...and as I typed that, I realised why. I have my viewing set to something like "50 posts per page." It actually makers things very pleasant in my opinion, since I spend that much less time waiting for things to load. (It also makes long threads much less intimidating.) Anyway, I'm sorry you've had a bad experience with that. Hopefully it doesn't put you off OB too much.

Funny and/or meaningful Quotes lines and sayings
I was just responding to all the good things that the US sterotypically does with all the bad things that it... well, actualy has done.
Ah, but they're not just stereotypical. That was my point--everything I listed is a very big part of my childhood, my life, and who I am. I do understand where you are coming from. I just wanted to clarify that I wasn't just sounding off about the American Dream (I loved the "everyone else is awake" quote, by the way); those things are all very real to me. One funny quote that I keep in mind is something that I saw posted on Threadless quite some time ago: Ninjas don't use arial. It was a shirt listing all the attributes of ninja(s) in arial font. While it was just funny the first time I saw it, I keep it in mind for other things, as well. Most closely related is for my art/design work: use a font that fits, heh. But it also reminds me of people and they way they act/what they do. Drive up and Hang: I saw this on a blank card: the front had a car driving up the street, and on the street was painted "Hang up and drive." The words were written so that a driver would read them in the correct order (from bottom to top). I'm sure it wasn't intended, but the first thing I read was "Drive up and hang." The image that came to mind was a drive-through gallows, heh. It reminds me that there's a different perspective on anything, and to keep that in mind. Keep an open (and possibly intentionally skewed) perspective on life. :) "I enjoy being "Facebook Friends" with people that I never talked to in high school. And I'm glad we still don't talk. Love you guys!!!!!" This was a quote on the facebook (a college mySpace, basically) page of a girl I knew a very long time ago. I thought it was hilarious, and very true. People who don't care about you will often pretend to, or make gestures that only really aid themselves. (Even if it's a result as lame as having more facebook friends than someone else.) They aren't trying to make amends, just increase their status. Plus, all philosophising aside, at the time I was having a lot of annoyance with people who didn't like me trying to get me to be their 'facebook friend.' I am glad we still don't talk. :) Finally, The man who goes alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready. Henry David Thoreau. I love this quote, because it's very true, and very applicable to my life. I can be a very impatient person, and I hate waiting for other people to get their butts out to the car so I can go somewhere. I have this quote pinned to the sunvisor in front of the driver's seat of my car. It reminds me to be patient... and that if I can't be patient, next time I should go by myself. -
Heh, I always had this thing when I was younger that I thought it was bad luck to not be in your bed when the lights go out. Of course, the problem arises that I was the one who turned the lights off, and my bed was on the other side of the room. So, when I went to bed, I would always close my eyes, hold my breath, turn off the light, run blindly to my bed and curl up under the covers. Only then did I feel free to open my eyes and breathe again.

When I'd go to the loo at night, I'd run as fast as I could to get into bed before it stopped flushing, I thought that a whirlpool of water was coming after me to suck me in should I fail to reach my bed before the flushing stopped.
I did both of those things! Running to my bed with the light off didn't work very well when I was on the top bunk, though. I used to throw stuffed animals at the light switch, hoping that one of them would hit it and turn the light off without my having to get out of bed. (Their sacrifice was never final, happily. They were always okay in the morning.) And my room was around several corners and up a flight of stairs from the bathroom... but I always ran as soon as I flushed the toilet, and had to be out off the kitchen (and hopefully up the stairs) before it finished. I don't remember thinking that the whirlpool would get me, but the sound of the tank refilling after being flushed used to freak me out, and I wanted to be as far away as possible when it began.

Like I said, it takes some getting used to. Newer members, especially, tend not to bother looking at long threads. However, you don't need to read through the entire thing, lol. When you get into it, you just automatically check the last page of the threads you're interested in. OB was originally set up with seperate forums (and as many threads as you'd like) for several different anime, but as more and more anime became popular, it just wasn't a feasible option. (Can you imagine having as many forums as theOtaku has hubs? No, thanks!) So the current one-thread-per-show system was set up some time ago. It works fairly well, I think.
[b']I think many Americans are in love with a country that only exists in their heads. ~ Ramanan Sivaranjan
I think that's true, but it's also very sweet. And isn't it true of any sort of love, really? When I think of America, I don't think of George Bush, or Iraq, or terror. I think of playing in the sprinkler in my backyard, and helping paint the honest-to-gosh white picket fence that seperated our front lawn from the back. I remember watermelon juice dribbling down my chin at 4th of July picnics; I remember walking down to the beach to watch the fireworks at night when I was young, and I remember driving my little brother to watch the fireworks last summer. I think of how I learned the Pledge of Allegiance when I was 5 and would say "...under God, invisible" at the end. I think of almost 20 years of Thanksgiving dinners at my Grandparents' farm, and learning about Pilgrims when I was in kindergarten, and the public school I went to for the first three years of my education. So help me, I do think of ice cream and apple pie, and it's good stuff. I think of Trick-or-Treating, and bobbing for apples, and the crisp, new smell of spring after a long muddy winter. This is my America. I don't understand how anyone could hate it. -
Cruel Robbers Take Items From Cemetery
I'd rather hear about all the Aide workers being kidnapped in Iraq than about some stuffed animals being stolen.
No one's stopping you. There was an article similar to this in the Milwaukee paper a bit back. People were removing things from shrines (e.g., crash sites, etc.) It's really a heartbreaking lack of respect for people and their feelings. -
Honestly I'm suprised that there isn't a thread on this subject already...
I'm not. You're the only person who makes threads of this sort. CNN: Update, with comments on her love life. To be frank, I don't have an opinion on this whole thing either way. I do, however, think it's unnecessary to bring the status of her marriage into the public eye. -
I understand your confusion and frustration here. When threads say "Poll" in front of them, that doesn't mean that the entire thread is devoted to the poll. Especially in the cases of merged threads, the poll often has nothing to do with the eventual topic of discussion. ("Poll" is automatically added to the subject line when there is a poll attached. Actually "Poll" isn't part of the thread title, but something that comes before it. Rather like "Sticky" or "Moved.") The system in the Anime Lounge is to have one main thread per anime, so that all discussion pertaining to that anime can be found in a single thread. If you have something about Gundam that you want to post, you can post it in the midst of whatever current Gundam conversation is going on. It takes some getting used to.
Well, to fix that, don't put in really ugly smilies :p
It's not really my use of ugly smilies that I'm concerned about. Other people use them, too, you know. :p I think that a
option wouldn't be too bad. Obviously, there's potential for abuse, but that's the same as with the text color itself. Anyway, it's not needed, but it could be a fun toy.
Let's try and keep the discussion civil, [/b']please. I don't want two potentially interesting threads closed in the same day because of flaming.
I am going to add that personal attacks are ban-worthy offenses. So watch it.
You misunderstood what I said. When a gay couple gets together what else can you have besides having sinful pleasures for one another?
*raises hand* Would you say the same thing for an unmarried heterosexual couple? Because I totally get together with my boyfriend all the time without any sinful pleasures going on. I mean, gosh. It's not all about sex, lol. Oh, and sin didn't create homosexuals. They're people, for crying out loud. Not embodiments of evil. Sheesh. I can't believe you said that.

Yo. Anyamae, do not double-post. That is not allowed here. If you discover that there is some key element missing from one of your previous posts, use the button to change it. If you wish to post fanfiction, this forum is not the place for it. You may post about stories and poetry in the Anthology forum. Before you post there, however, be sure to read the stickies in that forum. If you don't follow the rules laid out in them, your thread will be closed. Little Slugger, "backseat modding" is not allowed. If you simply must add your input on whether or not a thread will be closed, fee free to use the report post button.
first off, i would like to say, your going to get busted by the mods for posting a thread about animes that already have threads about them.
You're going to get busted by the mods for backseat modding. There's no need to warn people about their infractions. That's our job, and I'd like to delude myself that we handle it pretty well. On a related note, your post quality isn't so hot yourself. You might want to work on that. I think I am going to close this, although if Dagger feels otherwise, she can certainly supercede me here. I'm not intimately familiar with AL and its single-thread policy. It does seem like r2vq would like some company in the Naruto thread, though, so I invite you to post there. :)

This looks more like an RPG sign-up than a thread for the AL. However, any given thread in the Adventure Inn has a higher level of quality than this. If you're interested in portraying yourself anime fashion, there are threads in the Art Studio where you can post drawings of yourself, anime style. If you want to sign up for an RPG, there are myriad possibilities in the Adventure Inn, but I suggest that you acquaint yourself with its rules prior to posting. Little Slugger, it is imperative that when you start new threads that you maintain an exceptionally high level of post quality. Your post sets the standard for the people who follow you. If your post is shoddy, sloppy, or otherwise sub-par, you have a very slim chance of the thread remaining open. Improve your post quality. This is your last warning. While I admire your enthusiasm, I'm tired of cleaning up after you.
Oh, well, #### you! You ####ing ####er! You just have no taste, you know that?! T_T *Azure's sky-blue suggestion shattered* Hey, why don't we just have both and people can pick their flavor? SPOILER tag and SPOILER2 tag? That way we don't have to look at the good and bad of either of them and just let the poster choose.
Something like [Spoiler2=skyblue]Vegeta!!!!112[/spoiler2] would make me grin. ...I must say. That sounds like it could be pretty snazzy. I'm envisioning veritable rainbows. Huzzah! Would something like that be possible? But yeah. Personally, I don't mind the spoiler tags at all. I remember they took some tweaking to get to the point where they are now, but they've worked pretty well. The only thing that bugs me about them, aesthetically, is something like this:
I like pie. I also like pi :genius: I like pie and pi. Hurray for pi(e). Pi in the sky. Two are pie! I am a cutie pi. :catgirl: Pie are circular, unless you eat some. If you take a piece of pie, and measure how long it is, and then multiply it by two pi, you will have the pie's circumference. Magpi. Pumpkin pi. Pie pie pi.
The gap!! The gap!! It slays me.
I just think most adults feel that they need to be grown up and stuff like that.
Many adults have the need to be grown up and stuff like that. It happens to be what keeps them (and you) fed, clothed, and housed.

Well, it rather seems that this is a rhetorical question, but I'll answer it anyway. Find out if your school has specific rules for starting official (school-sanctioned) clubs. If so, follow them. You'd probably need a certain number of interested people and a teacher or other adult who's willing to be a club adviser (the adult in charge). If your school doesn't have rules like that, just do it. Get some interested people and a willing adult (teacher, parent, whatever), and find a meeting place. If you can have access to a classroom with a TV right after school, that's probably your best shot (although you would need to get permission.) Put up flyers around school (check if you need permission for this: some places require it) with the location and meeting time. And make sure you have snacks and something to watch.
-
I can't give you a great answer on the comics thing, either, but on a related note: I remember thinking how cute (for lack of a better term) it was that one of my foreign exchange student friends referred to manga as "comic books." Because, well, that's what they are, heh. She asked me if I read comic books, and started listing off things like One Piece. I was so confused at first, because I really don't equate the two. But of course, that was the English word that she'd learned for them.
Oh, and alert[/B']. He's trying that same trick as that other guy from a few months ago - he isn't actually banned, thats just his Custom Title.
It's okay, he's been taken care of.
Heh I almost fear responding to this because my list is a bit um, odd. But hey, I never claimed to have good taste, I just like what I like XD Will Smith- Meh don't hate me for him. I love watching him get pissed off at aliens/robots/eggplants/cats. Plus the movies he's in aren't really that bad.
I like Will Smith. He cracks me up. I really don't know much about actors and actresses, so I guess I can't really answer well. I still like Robin Williams. And while it's not quite the question, I'll gamely watch any old movie with Dick van Dyke in it. (Several years ago, my mom rented a movie from the video store. I asked what it was. "I don't know, but it's got Dick van Dyke in it. It'll be good.") I do remember girls in my class being utterly enthralled with everything Jonathan Taylor Thomas did, years back. Come to think of it, I haven't heard anything about him since Titanic thrust Leo DeCaprio into the hearts of middle-schoolers everywhere. Whatever happened to him?

Anime If you could have any anime characters in your family who would it be?
Sara replied to a topic in Otaku Central
As it stands, I'm very wary about this thread. In your posts, be sure to explain why you would those characters as your family members. It would also be nice if you'd space things out so that they're legible.
Dad: Prof. Kusokabe from My Neighbor Totoro. He's the perfect father to Satsuki and Mei. He's kinda, laughs easily, keeps his head in a crisis, and really loves his daughters. Big sisters: Sumika from Haibane Renmei. (She's the woman who works with Nemu in the library.) She seems very lighthearted and friendly, but also caring. I can imagine calling her up for advice on dating or help with my homework. Plus, I'd love to go over to her house and spend time playing with her baby. Lin from Spirited Away. She's sassy and spirited. She doesn't let on right away, either, but she does care about Sen. I think she's the perfect mix of sarcastic exterior and kind heart. If she were a candy, she'd be a sweettart, heh. I think she plays a great big sis figure to Chihiro. Boyfriend: Seiji from If you listen closely (Whisper of the heart). If you've seen that movie, you know just what I mean. He's the perfect childhood sweetheart. Teasing but repentant, secretly sweet... a very "best friend goes boyfriend" kind of character.
-
In response to a point you raised in your original post, Little Slugger, I would argue that rather than trying to get more adults or people from any other demographic into anime, it would be best to start convincing more of the current fans to actually spend money on it.
Oh! Can I get you some silver sulfadine? Because you just got burned! ...Yeah, no one take offense to that. Anyway, I'm in college, and most of my friends are technically adults. Do we consider ourselve such? Well, no. But the fact remains that we are. I realise that by "adult" you mean "a generation up," but there are a lot of factors why most parent-figure people don't watch anime. For one, they simply don't have time. People with full time jobs aren't likely to stay up late watching Adult swim (or whatever). An 8-hour job doesn't mean you work 8 hours a day. It means you're out of the house for nine or ten hours a day, and you still need to run a household on top of that. Frankly, I'm amazed that anyone lives past the age of 40. And anime was around when they were younger, as well... But it wasn't as popular, and it was a lot harder to access. (To put it another way, the "anime sub-culture" used to be a lot more "sub.") First impressions, and all that.
