Anime Charcoal Feathers Federation [Haibane Renmei]
Sara replied to outlawstar69's topic in Otaku Central
Does anyone have any info on this show? I know its about Angel like creatures or something and i'm thinking about getting it. i just wanna know if it has any action or what? and if the animation is good and all. And does anyone know what year it was made? thanks
There's no action. At all. If you like faintly creepy shows with religious symbolic overtones and fodder for thousands of interpretation theories, though, this is for you. If not...I'd look to hit up something else. The animation is beautiful. It's really more a 'slice of life' show than one that actually tells a story. The first several episodes are just a new Haibane (the angel-like creature) learning about her environment and getting to know people. That's about a third of the show. The rest raises a lot of questions, but very few of them are actually answered. It was made fairly recently. I'm not sure exactly when, but I'm sure a quick look on Google would help you out. -
I haven't had much free time this semester, but I do have a science fiction/linguistics class (it is wonderful) that thankfully requires the reading of short stories and novels. Last night I read a short story called "Speech Sounds." It is by Octavia Butler. I cannot say how much I enjoyed it. The title doesn't do it justice (I take linguistic classes, and even I thought it was going to be boring), but I thought it was a really beautiful story. It takes place in California, some time after an illness swept the country and killed many people. In those it did not kill, it destroyed/impaired people's ability to process language. Everyone was affected--people cannot read, write, speak, or comprehend spoken language (or some combination of the above.) Society degenerated, people are intensely jealous of those who are not as impaired as they, and the only common means of communication is a new kind of sign language. There are endless possibilities for contemplation here (especially for a lame language buff like myself) but the story is not very long. It doesn't explain the illness or tell the story of how things began to fall apart. It follows a few hours of the life of a woman named Rye. It was really the attention to detail that got me. In a world without written or spoken communication, nuances of body language are everything. It's a very striking, moving story. The last time I fell so in love with a short story was Ray Bradbury's "Usher II," and my AIM handle is still based off that. (Considering how often I used to change AIM names, that's impressive, okay? :p) One particular thing from this story that really caught me was the naming of people. Without words, you cannot tell someone your name. Isstead, everyone has a name...token, I guess. Rye's is a pin shaped like a stalk of wheat. She asknowledges that "people who had not known her before [the illness struck] probably thought of her as Wheat." In the story she meets a man whose name symbol is a "smooth, glassy, black rock." Rye considers that his name could be almost anything--Peter, Black, Rock--but decides to think of him as Obsidian. Almost more than anything else, I guess, that struck something in me. The story is apparently available in the volume of short stories Bloodchild and other stories (which I will be seeking out shortly); I also have the story in PDF form. If anyone is interested in reading it, please let me know.

From Godel's postAlice reached out her hand and tentatively touched the book. Nothing spectacular happend, and she realised, feeling silly, that she had been holding her breath (well, sort of) as she had touched it. She looked up at the pale man once more; he was staring impassively. Her friend the Fish seemed to nod to her. Heart beating fast, Alice closed her eyes for a moment, then quickly flipped the cover open. It landed softly on the table with a fudgy thud. She opened her eyes.
I am still working at my first job and it's pretty nice because it's at a dining hall on campus and so all of my coworkers are also college students whose parents don't give them everything they want and need a few extra bucks. I enjoy it alot. And I get to pick my own schedule. And such. Yes. I love it. [/color']
I'm totally with you there, babe. Like Tori, I work at a campus dining hall. I'm actually barely working at all this semester (every other weekend, basically), because school does come first--and holy cow, do my classes keep me busy during the week. Working at UDS (University Dining Services) isn't exactly glamorous, but it's an okay job. There are full-time workers and student workers, everyone's pretty friendly (except those NUTTy students who simply must have their ranch dressing *rolls eyes*), and the pay is lovely. My boss is a great guy, and I get along with all my coworkers. The shifts are only four hours at a stretch, and while they're at set times, you completely set your own schedule, choosing which days you can work. It's probably the best "first job" experience I could possibly have. Plus, I eat free whenever I work. (Granted, after spending four hours working in the cafeteria, the food isn't really all that appealing, but still.) My dorm actually has pretty good food, though (others have worse), so it's a pretty good deal. off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of UDS, Sara
I hate liberal use of the flaming smiley, but hey, that's me. Oh, and tomatoes. I think they're the worst food on this entire planet. I feel sick just looking at or smelling the things raw. I don't mind tomato byproducts.
I hate it when Tony is wittier than I. Which, unfortunately, is often. Interestingly enough, I love tomatoes. It makes me sad that the Brontosaurus isn't real. I don't like MSN messenger. I really dislike being cold. One thing that really, really drives me nuts, though, is when people start talking about dental hygeine and orthodontics while I'm at the dinner table. I'm sure there are other things in life I could do without, but that's a big one. :flaming: :flaming: :flaming: :flaming: :flaming:, Sara

I was definitely a cowgirl. Of course, I was also an artist, an astronaut, a cat, an indian princess, an explorer, a scientist, a ninja turtle, a "lost boy," a mermaid, a sphinx, a lion cub (Lion King! Juu, rock on!), a Power Ranger, a dinosaur (triceratops, stegasauri, and brontosauri--may their memory rest in peace :(), and dozens of other things, I'm suure. Pirates never really came into things--well, actually, that's untrue. One of the most enduring "Pretend" games of my childhood was playing Neverland. Years, I played that game. YEARS, I SAY! Peter Pan, Wendy, Smee, Tiger Lily...oh, the memories! Pirates were definitely the bad guys of my childhood years. (Although there were one or two occasions when some convoluted plots necessitated cooperation with the scurvy dogs.) I had white cowbow boots when I was in second grade. They were awesome. i'm yer huckleberry, Sara

All About CROWS!!! Okay, let's see. I've really lost my train of thought, so...Hm. Crows. The crows are another thing I've sort of avoided thinking about, to be honest. I do feel that I need to watch the series again, maybe even just paying specific attention to references to some of the things we've been talking about. Augh, I wish I had the dvds, heh. Crows: The Facts. Hm. Alright: the facts (?) Crows are the only things
allowed to pass freely over the walls.
Legend has it that
they bring the Haibane things that were forgotten on the other side. Memories?
Something like that? Do you remember--I don't, what the wording actually was. Kana always
sent the crows flying. She called them lazy scavengers, or something like that. However, she later said that she feels sorry for the. If they become lazy and dependant on food insidde the town, they'll never leave again.
Kuu
liked the crows.
I don't remember anything she said about them. Rakka always
felt a connection with the crows--or at least, one of them. It's hard to tell whether the connection was friendship or fear
--I remember seeing both expressions on her face at different times. There was a crow
in Rakka's dream. It tried to save her from falling. She knew it couldn't help her, but thanked it.
I remember thinking that Rakka
could not remember that part of her dream until the event in the well: She follows crows to the woods, and falls down the well. There, she finds the skeleton of a crow. She relives her cocoon dream. She receives forgiveness. She emerges guilt/sin-free.
Is it true that she could not remember it earlier? If so, this is another parallel between the two
sin-bound Haibane
that we know of. ------- Crows: The Theories. As for theories...I don't have (m)any about the crows. They were one of the things I didn't understand much at all. I think it's obvious that they do
have some connection to the real world
, but I don't know exactly what it is.
It alsmost seems as though they are a sort of bidge arcross the wall---between the town and the Haibane's past lives.
They're seen as scavengers by most of the town, but Kuu (and later, Rakka) see things diferently. Actually, interesting--the crows and the Haibane
have a couple things in common: they are 'scavengers' and have to make do with what others have already finished with. They both cross over the wall (albeit the Haibane's experiences are very narrow, almost restricted).
I had something else, too, but I don't remember it. But, yeah. I did some quick research on crows in mythology. The belief that they're intelligent is pretty much universal (because, well, they are.) They're scavengers/carrion eaters, so there's some symbolism with death. In Haibane Renmei, at least, the idea that they can fly
(unlike the Haibane, who even have wings, but can only fly once, on the DoF) carries some overtones of...I don't know, freedom or something.
Crows: The Not Exactly Credible, But Certainly A Good Jumping Point In The Search For More Information Webpage. This site isn't exactly the most coherent piece of literature I've ever seen, but it touches on a lot of differen things that are actually correct (if you go through the bother of spelling the names correctly and looking them up.) So that's really interesting. Sorry about all the typos, my keyboard's been hiccoughing recently. :p heck yes I did, Sara -
Actually, something else occured to me while reading about Quincy's collections. Though I haven't boughten any recently, I cringe to think how much money I have spent on books throughout my life. I have no idea how many books I have (and many, thankfully were bough seconhand on on discount from a school book order), but they fill several rubbermaid boxes, not to mention the ones I actually have on bookshelves. They make me happy, though. inside a dog, Sara
P.S. I do like plant food
That just came out funny. :) I am not a vegetarian. However, my mom is. It was a choice she made when I was younger, so after the initial weirdness (what's left for you to eat?!), it's always been very normal to me. I think that you need to be careful when talking about this topic. Perhaps it's just me and the way I was raised, but personal lifestyle choices (such as the decision not to eat meat for the rest of your life) become a big part of who you are. Bumpersticker sayings like "If we weren't supposed to eat animals, why are they made out of meat?" have always made me a little angry. While funny in an isolated setting, they're often said in context (or intonation) of condemnation. Not in every context (and I'm not chiding CHW), but they are generally used by 'omnivores' in blind defense of the fact they do eat meat, and often, as an attack on vegetarians. I somehow expected people to be more mature about the topic as I got older. But, no, I still get the same knee-jerk reactions from people that I did in middle school. It's not always a bright world. I occasionally go for a week or so while making an effort not to eat meat. I never try for longer than that, as I'm not sure that I'm eating healthily enough, and I realise that I'm not necessarily informed enough about my dietary needs to be sure I'm getting what I need. That's actually the primary reasonable argument I've heard against vegetarianism (and it always amuses me that people, unattacked, feel the need to defend that they are omnivorous--clearly, that is the norm; you don't need to explain yourself). Simply that the human body is designed to eat both meat and vegetables, and many people (including, but not limited to, teenage girls who want to lose weight), when "going veg" don't know enough to eat healthily when avoiding meat products. That's true. However, there are--and this has changed dramatically even over the last few years--an increasing number of vegetarian options available. I could get into them, but I won't, unless someone asks my opionion on vegetarian hot dogs. ;) And if you're aware of what you are doing, you can be perfectly healthy living on a meat-free diet. I believe my mom is a testament to this. carrot juice is murder, Sara

I don't really spend a lot of money. I guess the thing that I buy most regularly would be stickers. I love stickers. I've been collecting them for about a year now, and I just have the most ridiculous amount of them. But they're so much fun. They're small, and colorful--annd they stick to things! i guess you could say things are getting pretty serious, Sara
You just admitted that you knew you're hurting yourself. If you know you're hurting yourself, then why do you still do it? Hey there, CowboyRocker. You probably don't need to start two different threads about (basically) the same thing in the space of two days. In fact, there was already a 'Top 5' favorite thread. I merged your other thread with that one, but I'm going to close this. Feel free to talk about Atreyu all you want in the existing 'Fav Band' thread. Thanks! the original gourmet jellybean, Sara

I have actually eaten cats and dogs while abroad, not too bad to be honest, human's however I would never eat regardless of the situation, it's just plain wrong[/font']
You fail to explain why it's wrong. Why would eating a human be anymore wrong than eating an animal that many consider to be a part of the family, such as a cat or dog?
We need to explain why the concept of eating a human is "wrong"? Tough crowd. In the case of cats and dogs, I think it's a matter of familiarity. Western culture sees these not only as pets but often as equals, members of the family. Even the concept of eating a "pet" animal (even if it is, in fact, no one's pet) turns a lot of stomaches. I don't think anyone's really keen on the idea of eating something with a name. I've eaten beef from cattle that I'd named (although I didn't realize it at the time, heh). When I did make the connection a couple years ago, it kinda took me off guard. I'm all about having 7up when I'm sick. heh, when I was little, that was like thhe only time Mom ever bought soda--when we had the flu. Kinda sad, but funny at the same time.
I have a really stupid British question:- Is 'Kool-Aid' alcoholic? Because all I see in random cartoons and animations on newgrounds, are people knocked out from Kool-Aid.
Heh. Nah, Kool-Aid is completely innocent...unless you mix it with something nasty. I haven't seen any of the animations you speak of, but there was a cult-movement (led by Jim Jones)...it started out as a religious/Christian thing, and got more and more extreme. They eventually all moved to Guyana (in S. America) to a place that ended up being called "Jonestown" or "Jonesville" or something. Anyway, very long story short, they commited suicide (and slash or were killed) by drinking poisoned Kool-aid. Which might be what that's referring to--I don't know how well-known it is outside my community (everyone in my high school watches a film about it their Junior year.) But anyway, yeah. "Don't drink the Kool-Aid." Personally, I loved the stuff. Been collecting the points for years. ^_~ any excuse for an ice pick is a GOOD excuse for an icepick, Sara

Well, I was listening to Clay Aiken singing Invisible: Whatcha doin' tonight? I wish I could be a fly on your wall ...What would it take to make you see that I'm alive? If I was invisible I could just watch you in your room If I was invincible, I'd make you mine tonight If hearts were unbreakable, Then I could just tell you where I stand I would be the smartest man If I was invisible Wait, I already am. So anyway, I'm sure you're familar with the lyrics. My point was, I decided that I wanted to make a playlist of Stalker Songs on iTunes. So far I have Every Breath You Take by the Police, and Celine Dion, by the Arrogant Worms. I know there are more 'stalker' type songs out there (they don't have to be that blatant, heh), but anyway, I was hoping for some recommendations. Lyrics: Every Breath You Take: Every breath you take Every move you make Every bond you break Every step you take I'll be watching you Every single day Every word you say Every game you play Every night you say I'll be watching you O can't you see You belong to me How my poor heart aches With every step you take Every move you make Every vow you break Every smile you fake Every claim you stake I'll be watching you Celine Dion: I think I've got a crush on Celine Dion The way she beats her chest when she sings a love song There's something about her makes me want to feed her And I'd love to be Mister Celine Dion She'll sing a song in English, and she'll sing en francais Both the songs will suck, but I love her anyway She's full of emotion, I'm full of devotion For Celine and I'll be hers someday Oh Celine Dion, you soft-rock my world Won't you please be mine Celine I would do anything, if you'd be my girl Oh, be my girl Celine I sent you cards and letters, but you don't respond You play hard to get, but my heart goes on and on (and on and on, etc...) I just wanna say, je aimerez And I can see your house from my van Oh Celine Dion, you soft-rock my world Won't you please be mine Celine I would do anything, if you'd be my girl Oh, be my girl Celine Celine Celine Her skin's so soft and clean Just like porcelain I wish she'd slather me With a tub of vaseline...
