Oh man, you guys! Just wait till you hear all this good stuff! I'm from Wisconsin, which is clearly the Coolest State Ever. Not only is it America's Dairyland (our license plates say so! And there are many people bitter about the fact that--shush!--California is actually the leader in dairy production. Ahem.) but it's also a leader in canning peas. This does not sound impressive, but it is true (or at least, true enough to be included in the anthem that won some "Write a Wisconsin Anthem!" contest: Wisconsin is a leader in canning peas; it invented malted milk and types of cheese..) Speaking of cheese! Despite the fact that the Green Bay really seems to be the only thing that anyone outside the Midwest knows about Wisconsin, not everyone here follows football or is a fan of the Green Bay Packers. And I resent being called a "Cheesehead." However, even though I, personally, do not follow football, many people here do. On Packer Game Days, not only does my city's emergency room stay empty (at least, until after the game :)), but if you turn on the radio, it is possible that you will hear one of several songs written about the Packers. These songs include (but are not limited to!) The Packerena, the Packer Polka (they take the op-po-si-tion, and crunch 'em up like crackers...that's why I love the Green bay Packers) and The Bears Still Suck. Goin back up to the Wisconsin Anthem I cited earlier, what about Malted Milk?! You're going to love this: Malted Milk was invented in Racine, Wisconsin. That's where I live! In fact, it was invented by a guy named William Horlick. We have a high school named after William Horlick. Is that awesome, or what? On a quieter note, Laurel Clark, aboard the last mission of the space shuttle Columbia was from Racine. Racine is also the home to S. C. Johnson Wax (A Family Company). Johnson Wax was founded by Mr. Sam Johnson, and is probably the reason my city actually exists today. For those of you not 'in the know,' Johnson Wax is the company that produces OFF!, Raid, Ziploc, Saran (cling wrap), Edge and Skintimate (shaving creams/gels, heh), Windex, Shout, Pledge, Scrubbing Bubbles, Glade (air freshener) and Drano (drain cleanser). Stores here have entire aisles devoted to S.C.J items. Half the city works for the company. Sam Johnson died last spring, and the entire city mourned. Sure, it's a little creepy, but yeah. The best-known aspect of Racine, however ("Racine: Belle City on the Lake") has to do with a pastry. It's called Kringle, and apparently no one else (outside of, say, Denmark) knows what it is. Or rather, if they do know what it is, it's only because they've been to Racine. I cannot count the number of time I have said to someone, "I am from Racine," and they have replied, "Oh! Kringle, right?" If you Google 'Kringle' at least three of the top ten results (and two of the top three) are sites based on companies from my city. For example (there's a picture). It's really good stuff, and people have it all the time at meetings, church functions, pot-lucks, or even breakfast. It never occured to me that other places would not have kringle (it's sorta ingrained into my soul after have grown up in Racine). I've spent the last several months trying to find someone up here (again, I'm currently a a few hours norwest of home) who knows what Kringle is. I have found one person who knows what it is....but only because her grandparents live in Racine! And finally, because as much as I love pretending to be a brochure, there's only so much perkiness I can dole out at once, I am going to leave you with a conversation I had a couple months ago with a coworker. He asked where I lived; I told him. Racine is between Milwaukee and Chicago, and he'd driven through there several times on I-94. "Yeah," he said, "I know where that is." He paused.
"Nothing but cheese shops and porn stores."
And that, my friends, is funny because it's true. (Hopefully Corey can back me up on this, so I don't sound like a moron for finding this hilarious.) Speaking of Corey, I didn't even touch on all the awesome things about Milwaukee! ,,,,Perhaps a nother time. ^_~ where's the bubbler? Sara
And we say "pop" in Illinois, but to me, soda sounds better in print.[/SIZE']
I've always called it "soda," but since moving slightly norwest to Minnesota, I've found that there is a very vocal anti-soda movement here. People have "It's Pop, not Soda!" clubs (of course, there are "Soda, not Pop!" clubs formed in opposition to these.) The whole thing is just really cool to me, but I'm not going to get into the other dialectal differences here, heh. For the interested, though, here's a fun little U.S. map of the commonly used terms for carbonated beverages: Pop. vs. Soda (dot com) just for the taste of it, Sara

Now I totally agree with what many of you have stated in this thread already about some people seeing the Mod position as being oh-so powerful. It is easy to over look the negatives. The angry people PMing you or trying to flame you in the forums for some decision you made concerning their post or thread. At times it is very difficult not to let it get under your skin. There is also the repetition of having to close, in the case of the OL, all the "Hi, I am new here!" threads. It is totally understandable where the burn out comes from.
Not to crush anyone's dreams, or anything. *laughs softly* Don't misunderstand any of the staff or former staff who are saying things like this. We do enjoy it (at least on some level :p) or we wouldn't do it. But it can be frustrating, and every once in a while, there will be a member who takes up a personal crusade against some particular staff member (or who will start threads complaining about you in the Suggestions forum). It doesn't happen often, but I know both Shy and I had issues with a member or two. You might think it wouldn't bother anyone, but it can actually be pretty hurtful. You're trying to do something (that you are supposed to be doing, heh) and people actually attack you for it. (I'm not even going to get into all the Nazi accusations, heh.) Granted, this is all taking place on a message-board scenario, so don't distort what I'm saying. But still.
I think alot of members who think that they want to be mdoerators don't look at the difficulties and such. They also don't look at the fact that they are RESPONSIBLE for working on a board. Most of those members who say they want to be a moderator would crumble the first few days. To be a succesful moderator you have to be a succesful member. You have to understand all aspects the board. Even what it's like to be an admin and the way things work.
At the same time, I think most of the regular posters here know enough about how the Boards work to be able to easily moderate them. *shrugs* There are good moderators and bad moderators, we've had both here. (We've had moderators whose regular post style would get them ban warnings today.) For some people, becoming a moderator would be as little a step as actually being able to enforce all the things they already post.
Also, I'm not allowed to leave for good until Sara does. She really enjoys the place too much right now for that to happen anytime soon. -Shy
*tacklehugs* so wrapped up in layers, Onion Boy, Sara
One of my friends is really into going to buy food at the co-op and living all natural. I saw it there while shopping with her. I remember thinking that the flavors sounded interesting. A nice change from all the heavy sugar generic sodas out there. I should have bought a few to try out. Maybe I will next time I go to the co-op.
Actually, that's a great idea. There's a co-op behind my dorm, and I went there for the first time this weekend. (It was so fun--I felt healty and eclectic just being in there!) They have a ton of awesome (and often weird, but I like weird) things there. I'll have to go check out the soda possibilities, heh. well, can I hum? Sara
I think it kind of kills off a lot of the possible higher up "favorites" stuff.
Yes, thank goodness. (On the upside: I haven't been called a Nazi for months. :) ) I'm grinning at the fact that some of the threads are well over a year old and have made it into such an event more than once, but that's fun, too. I think this turned out great. Scanning down the list, everything seems to mesh perfectly. Even the things I didn't participate in, or the members I don't really know, I've been aware of hearing about and seeing around. The elimination of actual votes and categories did wonders for the "Year in Review" feel of things.
Heaven?s Cloud "Because I rule. Two Girls Sued for Baking Cookies/Problems with U.S. Justice System
Sara replied to Tigervx's topic in General Discussion
Morpheus, I am going to merge this with the other thread started tonight about the justice system, if you don't mind. ^_~ I like to believe that people are all relatively sane, agreeable, and at least able to be reasoned with. Things like this just bother me. I don't understand how these things even happen. Are people really that petty? That she refused to settle the situation outside of court boggles my mind. And the other situations are also...meh. The case about the burglar who sued has come up in conversation around here a few times in the last week. I've actually heard a few slightly different versions--if anyone is aware of where I can find the actual story, I'd like to be informed. gerund-loving, Sara -

I started modding here way back in the day. Summer 2001, some time before the whole v2 EOST (Elite Otaku Spamming Team, heh)/ hacker "scandal." I was a Digimod, and absolutely loved it. Digimon was something I liked, and I spent a ton of time in the OB Digimon forum (requiescat in pace), so it was something that was really the perfect "post" for me. I stepped down in the autumn of 2002; I was no longer interested in moderating that section. I stuck around as a member, of course (otherwise, would I be here now?) and some time later, James asked me to come back on staff as a Supermod (I still love that title. Makes me feel like an action hero). I agreed. That was perhaps a year and a half ago. And interestingly enough, I am still around. Personal history aside, let's look at the topic at hand. If I could drop my current post and have someone else take over, would I? Yep. "Team Leader" isn't a position that holds my heart, heh. Would I return to my old position? Digimod? Nah. It was great while it lasted, but I stepped down for a reason. And the Digimon forum hardly even exists in the archives anymore. // What other position would I like? If I were to step down from Team Leader of the Prefecture, I'd gladly stick around to kick some butt in the O. Lounge. Otherwise, I think I'd be able to make myself at home in the Arena. So there you go! internet killed the video star, Sara

Well, I went to United Noodle today, and saw Ramune there. So I thought, sure, why not? I bought some. And while it's far from being my favorite soda ever (I got the Lynchee (Lychee?) flavor and it's...different. Also, I guess I don't like fruit-flavored sodas as much in general), all I really have to say is: OMG COOLEST BOTTLE EVER!!!!!!11!!!!2 ...ahem. Thank you.
My riddle: Alice is walking throught the forest of forgetfulness. She wants to know what day of the week it is. She stops and asks a lion and a unicorn. Now the lion lies all of the time on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The unicorn always lies on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
I never understood the point of these lie-truth riddles. They're always presented with some story, but the story almost never makes sense. There's an island where half the people always tell the truth, and half always lie. Now, who came up with that idea? The island just sit down to a council meeting one day and decide half of them were never going to tell the truth again? The story usually qualifies that it's exactly half and half--well for goodness sake, who keeps tabs on that? You can't tell the two groups apart, for goodness sake--half the time, the entire riddle is simply to find out who is who. Of course, sometimes we up the stakes a bit--Sarah comes across a pair of doors in the Labyrinth and is told (of course!) that one always lies, and one always tells the truth. Well, she needs to go through one off the doors, of course, but--gasp!--one leads to certain doom, or some such thing. Alice is wandering in the forest and wants to know what day it is. Okay...she comes across a Lion and a Unicorn. Check. Now, how on earth does she know that each of them lies on certain days of the week? And how on earth does she know which days? That's three riddles right there, for goodness sake. Not only that, but this never even specifies that on the days that on animal always lies, the other always tells the truth. Suppose the unicorn has to lie, but the lion's feeling like a bit of a bastard and wants to get in on the action as well? What happens on Sundays? Do they both tell the truth? Do they both lie? Do they both do whatever the heck they feel like? Perhaps they turn into doves and fly away. Maybe there are no Sundays in the Forest of Forgetfulness. (For that matter, how do they remember which days are their lying days?) if you must erase, erase completely, Sara

I do believe that kids--yeah, even the twelve and thirteen-year-olds who come to OB desperately asking for advice--know what love is. Let me qualify--they know what love is to them, at that point in their lives. It's a dynamic concept. It changes as you grow up, as you mature, as you fall in and out of it, as you watch others and their experiences, as you live your own experiences. Can an 18-year-old possibly comprehend a 40-year-old's definition of love? Of course not. Can even a 20-year-old capture the thrill and innocence of being in love for the first time at age 13? Nope. As several have pointed (and repointed) out, there are dozens of reasons why this thread is subjective. What Jun-Woo just said: "All of your answers, indeed, are correct. But they also prove my point as to say that you can't boil it down to just one thing. Love is one of those exceptions that cannot be "truely defined". And so each individual has their own meaning." is true. You shouldn't tell someone that they aren't really in love. Don't tell someone they don't know what "real love" is. If someone says he is in love, at that moment, at that point in his life, he is in love. He may look back in six months and wonder what on earth he was thinking. He may not. But...it's not your place to contradict him. I wonder if that came out right at all. make your mark heavy and dark, Sara

My friend has introduced me to a couple of songs ("The Spirit Carries On" and "Wait For Sleep") and I love both of them. So I obviously haven't heard many songs by them, but they're two for two in the "I can (and have) listened to this song for hours on end" category. so quietly she lays, Sara
And he was fair too. SOme kid threw a piece of perch into my bookbag during lab (and screwed up my Neptune Picture) and he wouldn't let anyone go to their locker between lab and class because he wouldn't confess to it.
Oddly, that sounds like many a situation I have heard described as "unfair." I had two good years of high school, and two not-so-great years of high school. It wasn't a matter of classes (they were all pretty easy) or teachers (I had the same ones every year) or classmates (some were okay, but it was a small school, and you just get sick of seeing the same people every school day for ten years). The best advice I can give is this: First, join drama. All the coolest people are in drama. Second, be yourself. It sounds lame, sure, but if I had to redo high school, I would take it far less seriously. I don't mean that I would be apathetic--that won't help you. But be yourself--don't worry about the opinions of others. I know that whatever personal hell I went through was, in retrospect, worth it (for me). The things I would have done differently in high school are easy to spot and point out:

I would have joined drama my freshmen (not sophomore) year.
I would have been honest, not coy, when a certain person wanted to go out with me.
I would have done a lot more crazy, funny stuff with my assignments. (Teachers appreciate a sense of humor, and it makes your five page essays a lot more bearable.)
I would have taken a slightly less hectic course schedule my senior year and instead enrolled in some college course at the local Uni.
Nothing world-shattering, heh. I didn't have friends my freshman year. There was a gal I talked with during Study Hall (and PE), but other than that, nothing. It was okay. I wasn't really happy, but I was content. Honestly. You don't need to "fight the system," or anything crazy like that. In college, there will still be people (far more people, actually) who will smoke, drink, have sex, and talk about nothing else. The thing is, there's a larger gorup of people in general, and you have a good chance of finding those who you are comfortable hanging out with. I don't know, you guys. Maybe I was just ridiculously lucky with my high school experience--but I doubt it. There are those among my high school friends who hated the whole ordeal as much or more than many of the people who posted here. Maybe it's just my dorky outlook on life. But I honestly don't think it was that bad. Especially at the time, there was a lot of redeeming stuff about it. Granted, most of those things had to do with the great group of people I hung out with. (On the other hand, a lot of the hellish moments stemmed from the same group of people.) I guess I'm just going to say this again: things are what you make of them.

[/bad joke]
Bad joke aside, I still have no idea what you meant. //
I thought you were making a general observation at first. I didn't think you were making a conclusion from it. But I have to ask, what about Rakka? O_o
Whoops! When I wrote "Reki" there, it should have read "Rakka." Now, what about her? Rakka was older than Kuu, but still a kid, really. So under this theory, she would have still be under the AoA when
she died.
. I'm not sure what you're asking for. (And...I was making a general observation at first. I just sorta kept going with it, heh.)
Boy, that puts a whole damper on the
Original Sin
thing, doesn't it? I think this AoA (I can do abbreviations too :p) is an interesting idea. What's your opinion about it? (again, all irrelevant questions, just for my edification)
*massages temples* I don't really know. Catch me on AIM some time.
what does the definition mean when it says "
departing this life in God's grace[/SPOILER']"? Does that part work with or against the AoA thing?

I don't know why I'm spoilering this... I think that refers to having faith in Christ. The idea is that Purgatory is for Christians who still have sin "debt" to work off.
At least, that's what I was taught...It isn't something my church believes in, so I may be misinformed. Obviously in Haibane Renmei, we aren't dealing with a
Christian
environment in the firt place. But as far as parallels go, I don't think anything is disrupted too much. (As we haven't worked much out yet anyway. :p) Christian Theories: On Restrictions Placed on the Haibane
But as for your explanation for that
(used stuff) rule
, I don't know. Why would it be vital that they ONLY
use things that have been used by humans[/SPOILER']? Could you kind of build on what you said already, because I'm kind of getting what you are saying, but not quite. You know, bring more of those Christian examples and stuff.
It's not relevant in and of itself, but as a restriction placed on the Haibane, it's interesting.
Purgatory is a "place" (or state...or...something) between life and some 'after' life, where sins from life #1 are worked off, in order to be pure enough to move on.
Now, considering the town as a type of
purgatory
, we come to the conclusion that the Haibane, for some reason, have
some sin to work off, or some other obstacle that prevents them from...whatever normally happens after death.
How do they do this? Let's look at how the Haibane live:
They must work. (In order to become "fully fledged" Haibane. Ha ha, that gets me every time.) They cannot use money. They may only wear things that have been used by humans.
These things are all (as someone, I don't remember who, says)
part of the arrangement (between whom and whom else? Who made these rules?) that allow the Haibane to live there.
Now, why? Why would all these restrictions be placed on them? What have they done? They arrive as Haibane and learn, despite the fact that everyone treats them kindly, that they practically have
no rights
. Now, there's got to be a reason for this. It's not discrimination by the townspeople--as I said, they have no ill will toward the Haibane. But there's this
"arrangement."
I think (only from following all our previous assumptions on the matter, mind) that it's reasonable to conclude that the Haibane's way of life in the town allows them to
pay off whatever debt they have
. Nature of Haibane and The Sin-Bound. Now, we look at things again. And this is all musing at this point, I don't have any more theories at the moment.
What debt are they paying off?
We see that they each arrive
as children. What sins do children have?
Important point:
Not all Haibane are sin-bound.
In fact, it seems quite rare. So what makes a Haibane
sin-bound
? We have a good idea with Reki, but what about Rakka? Okay. My thoughts (which I believe you have heard before) on the topic of
sin-bound Haibane
:
It involves guilt. My original thought (which unfortunately was shattered *shakes fist at Official*) was that Haibane unable to forgive themselves became sin-bound. However, the Official flatly said that you cannot forgive yourself, you must receive forgiveness. This is tentative: Reki, for some reason (a carry over from her dream) has always felt a deep sense of guilt. She cannot remember her dream, and she is supposed to. This leads to further problems--her whole saga. She feels guilty, and seeking relief from that, gets into more and more trouble, burying herself under more and more guilt. Rakka also becomes sin-bound. When does this happen? After Kuu leaves. She's hearbroken about the loss of her friend, first of all. And (this is the bit where I start getting all philosophical) She remembers thinking how she thought no one would miss her if she were gone. (Am I correct in thinking this is a throwback/piece of memory from her former life?) Experiencing her own sorrow at the loss of someone dear, she now realizes that this was very wrong (and even selfish) for her to think. She realizes that she had hurt someone, and feels guilty. (This is also why I originally thought Rakka, too, had committed suicide.) This is the point when her wings begin turning black.
Aaaaand...I have more to say, but I'm nearly going to be late to class as it is, so further ramblings shall have to wait. integrate THIS, Sara -
(Man, I love that movie)
So, yeah, Manic is a dork. :) Honestly, I can't fathom what I'd do with that much money. I don't really need anything right now. If it were just the sort of wonderful hypothetical situation where the sum just magically (and legally) apears....hm. I'd probably end up giving huge amounts of money away to my friends. The vast majority would go in the bank, just because I wouldn't know what else to do with it. I would not spend it to see Paris Hilton attacked by rabid animals. Some day, I would like to go on some sort of grand trip with a friend or two and do the tourist bit. That would be something to do with a lot of money that was just sitting around for some reason. Actually, that's probably it. I'd like to travel around a bit. With company, though, because it's pretty lonely being far from home without any friends. Other things I'd like to own some day (when I have some money) are the volumes of the SANDMAN anthology, maybe a nice set of markers. Some bookshelves. I'd buy a new computer at some point, but I don't need one right now. If it were a few years later in my life and I were interested in starting a business, I'd use the money as capital. If I were still in college, some of it would be used for textbooks and whatever other fees they tack on to my student account. Do I sound horribly mundane here? very cherry, Sara

Different staff members may have different opinions on what, exactly, is the line between being helpful and playing mod. I guess I'm on the more lenient side these days. I'm kinda pressed for time just now, so I'll just hit a couple things: First, as long as you are polite and contribute to the discussion at hand, I (personally) do not usually have a problem with any post, including those. Even when I post to merge, move, or prune a thread, I usually try to post something relevant to the topic (although sometimes not, as 'official' things can get lost in the midst of a post...it's a fine line, I guess.) There's an old (but very interesting) thread here about "Playing Mod" and what it includes. My opinions in there are still relevant. One of the problems with members giving advice or explaining things is that they may not always get things right. Even when trying to be (or even being helpful) there's a risk run of confusing the issue. New members may be misinformed, and when things are said without 'authority' they are someetimes ignored (even when a mod does step in). Finally, (to bring something else up) there's a funny mutation of playing mod that annoys me far more than any trying-to-be-helpful post, and that is when people post in a thread, but casually remark, "Well this is pointless," or "*waits for mods to close this*" or "**waits for Mods to spray this thread down with a hose*" It's rude and unnecessary. Sorry for skipping around, and I know I missed some things I wanted to hit on, but I need to run off to class. hickory dickory DOCK, Sara
EDIT: I almost forgot! Valentines day is a GREAT holiday! Why? You get those awesome little heart candies that have the funny little sayings on them. The white and yellow ones are best, IMHO. Yay for little heart candies. Love is all you need, James Bierly
You rock. My feelings on this holiday change a lot, heh. I've never been in any sort of relationship around St. Valentine's Day, but I've never felt bitter or lonely about it, heh. It's never something I've been looking for. I'm okay with that. I love making little cards for my friends, and I love getting reminders that people are thinking of me. Sure, it's commercialized, but almost everything is. Sure, you shouldn't need a specific day to do nice things for the people you care about--but having such a day isn't a bad thing. all I care about is love :p, Sara
But you can still love something unequivocally even if it's not fully requited. I guess a love for something can't be properly expressed in its entirety unless there's something going to be given in return and you certainly need that in order for it to actualy succeed, but the feelings could still be there.
Yes, I amended what I had orignally said before I posted. That the feeling is returned is part of a relationship, which...is closely tied with love, but not the same thing. (Well, they are hopefully simultaneous, heh.) Mmm. Love. What a crazy thing to ask teenagers to define, eh? just a soul whose intentions are good, Sara
