Is life really like a box of chocolates?
OlgaTheDwarf replied to Ashley_the_blr's topic in General Discussion
If life was a box of chocolates, there wouldn't be world hunger. Anyway, I'm not quite sure how long this thread can go on for, as it seems we've milked that philosiphy for all it's worth, and when people start getting into brand comparison it just starts to get silly. Life is like... life. Simple as that. It's a journey that really can't be compared to anything else, with too many uknown things to be likened to a box of chocolates. Such as, death; you know what you're going to get when you finish a box of chocaltes, an empty box. But no one can really ever tell what exactly happens when you die. -

Um, I'm not going to go in any particular order, nor am I going to fill all them out, just the ones that strike me! ----------------------- Funniest Member: wristcutter. Why not, he spends his entire life on knowing this stuff he should at least get some credit. Honorable Mention: He does exist, but for the sake of not being called "tasteless" I won't say. Gaming The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
OlgaTheDwarf replied to ThePikasElbow's topic in Noosphere
Originally posted by kenshinsbabe 1.Is Zelda Windwaker really that good?
No... ...That is, unless you like watching you own crap float around in a toilet. If that's the case, then you'll love it. I mean sure, TWW is fun to play for the first, lets say five minutes, but I don't think I'm the only one that takes a look at my crap right after I unload. Simply put, yes it's fun to see how long it is, or in TWW's case, it's fun to see how it's going to be, but in the end, crap is crap. Note: No, I really don't think it's that bad, but I didn't particularly enjoy it either. You really have to play it for yourself. -
Originally posted by Shaun She is pretty nice looking...but her personality sucks...
What's wrong with her personality? I haven't actually ever heard her talk, but she has one thing over about 90% of the pop-stars (Note: the 90% doesn't include my wife, Mandy Moore), she doesn't walk around like a prostitute. So at least she has has respect for herself in that way, which in my opinion, is a good personality trait. But, like I said, I really haven't heard her talk (or really even seen her for the past year), so i wouldn't completely know.
-
Now that would be really odd. Especially since she really wasn't any different from most of the other "girl-pop" acts out there. But, I think everyone should be able to change music styles if they want to. Especially if they are as good looking as Vanessa Carlton. :-)

WTF, I'm not sure what "?" you're talking about, but I think you didn't quiote get what I was talking about. Anyway, I'm so proud of you Desbreko, you finally posted a question that I can't be a "smartass" to, therefore beating me. Plus, you were such a good sport! :-) Thanks for the fun run.

I am currentely listening to one of the most underrated band in the past decade, Sunny Day Real Estate. They, very arguably, are just as influencial a band as Nirvana. But, do to lazy fans, since there break up in 2001, no one ever talks about them. Anyhoo, I am listening to there last CD the Rising Tide. The song is Killed by an Angel, the greatest song about substance abuse, ever made.
Originally posted by CompletelyRando With rock I like hard core stuff like AFI and System of a Down.
Wow, my favourite hardcore band is Nickelback. They're so brutal. On a serious not, I find it quite ammusing that when one person forms an opinion in music, they think they are god. Saying what's good and what isn't, for other people. They will even criticize other peoples (legitimate) opinions of music. Yes, I know I have probably done this in the past, but I usually mean it in jest, and try not to anymore. With all this said I pretty much agree with James (as hard as it may be to believe), that music is a personal thing. No one person will ever have exactly(loose definition) the same liking as another person. That is, unless that person only listens to music to be part of a certain crowd. Now, that is not a bad thing altogether, I believe that most people's musical tastes are definitely influenced in some way or another, by who they have as friends. But, if your are not keeping an objective mind to your tastes, and only listen to music so you can be part of a crowd , then it can be a bad thing. Then again I could be wrong, if it's your tastes to listen to whatever the crap the "popular" people are listening to, then by all means, listen to it. Music is an amazing thing that everyone should experience. Wether they want to experience it through rap, pop, classical, techno. I may not like rap, but that doesn't make it less of a form of music; or someone who does like rap less of a music connoisseur than I. So my tastes... Well, I pretty much stick with rock. As I stated before I don't care for rap (for me that includes, R&B, Hip-Hop, and the rest of that stuff.) I just have never been able to get into it, and at this point in time I could care less if I ever do. There's more than enough rock for me to fill my boring days with, well, at least right now. Now, some might consider me to have A "closed mind", with only listening to rock, so I would like to state that I also enjoy classical/symphonic, a tiny bit of techno, folk music, and Johnny Cash (I frankly don't find any other country music worth my time). Going back to rock... I basically will give almost anything a chance. Though I hold my opinions, I like just about all forms of rock, ranging from pop, to hardcore/metal. I don't listen to mainstream music all to much, but I don't have a problem with it. I very much enjoy The White Stripes, and Sunny Day Real Estate (are they comsidered mainstream?) is one of my all time favourite bands. The fact that a band is mainstream does not automatically make them bad, the problem seems to come when they are willing to do anything to be mainstream. So all in all, you might make the conclusion that I have a pretty closed music mind, but frankly, I don't care. It's my mind and I'll close it if I want (but that doesn't make me right, does it now.)
Originally posted by Semjaza Azazel Well, first kisses, from what I can tell are rarely exciting... Well, maybe not copletely useless, I can still add wht I expect of it. I'm not quite sure what to expect, seeing as I have never been apart of any (romantic) kissing activity. I guess, I expect her (the other half of the kiss) lips to be on mine. Maybe I'm asking too much but you never know...
Originally posted by Semjaza Azazel What is your thoughts on the two singers then...? I'm not quite sure what angle you were going after with that comment lol.
I not a fan of the two lead singer stuff, and if The Blood Brothers weren't as good as they are I probably would hold it against them. At least they aren't like From Autumn to Ashes, who, by the way, put out another disappointing CD of 2003. They have a double lead singer thing going and suck at it.
-
Originally posted by Semjaza Azazel The Blood Brothers - ...Burn, Piano Island, Burn Sometimes I wonder what exactly I see in this release. It's not exactly a marvel of musicality (is that a word?), it's not accomplishing anything new. It just manages to work a lot of energy into a nice punk/hardcore release that pushes a lot of the boring mall punk ******** that permeates popular music out of the way. Plus they get bonus points for being one of the few bands that put something out in the past couple years with two singers that doesn't include some white kid trying to rap. Instead you get some scream-y, punk-ish vocals (which aren't unlistenable, I actually like them) and another guy who does a little more subdued stuff. It's a nice combination and I think it is pulled off well. Instrument-work is nice. Nothing out of the ordinary, but it remains fresh and interesting. Plus they have some cool synth worked in from time to time, which ups the fun for me :D I'm not big on hardcore, but this is some really solid stuff.
I agree with you on this band (except for the two singer nonsense), though I, for the life of me cannot find this CD anywhere. mewithoutYOU: A-->B Life I know, you're probably think to yourself, "WTF, mate! This album cameout last year." Well, your probably not thinking that but just go with it. Anyways, despite this being released last year, it's still my favourite album this year (a guess because I did not obtain it until this year.) Musically, It's a post-punk album, bordering on hardcore that doesn't sound like anything else (which seems to me to be the in-thing to do these days). One of my favourite things about this band is the lead- singers vocals. He's got one of those love, it hated it, voices that can ultimately decide your opinnion on this band. Despite the few that hate his voice, I love it. He's almost screaming but not, sounds like he is going through biological changes but is to old to be, and through all this he still has time to sing a beautiful acoustic hidden track. Still worth $15. Coheed and Cambria: In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3 Their first was great but this one really sets the bar, that is their music, higher than many thought was possible. It's tough enough to be an "emo" band and come up with original stuff, but these guys do an amazing job of it. Not only do their songs defy time (by going on 8 min.+), but in one song they'll go from rock, into a hardcore breakdown, back to rock, on to pop, throw in a few 80's metal riffs, and have time a polka baseline in all of this. Note: To any of you who think this sounds like another Mike Patton side-project (which thinking about it myself, it might). Don't worry, they sound nothing like Mike Patton (Thankfully!). Still worth $14.50. I'll add more to this list when I have time to think of it more... On to the dissappointments! (lol) The Fire Theft: S/T Being the Sunny Day Real Estate fan I am, I was really looking foreward to this CD. But alas, the three SDRE members of this band decided to change SDRE's sound, into something a bit more classic rock oriented. Now, don't get me wrong, I have no problems with classic rock, but SDRE was really good the way the were. Their old sound really complimented, lead singer, Jeremy Enigk's vocal, their new sound, not as much. Still, the high point of the CD is Jeremy's amazingly high pitched vocals. I think many SDRE fans will still get into TFT's sound but as for me I didn't. (I will occupy this space with more later.)

Pro-life Pro choice. Let's be mature, kay?
OlgaTheDwarf replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in General Discussion
Okay, for starters I would like to firmly state that I am Pro-life. To all of you effers who seem to be taking this the wrong way, I would like to explain that what I mean by it is simply, that I believe abortion should never be a choice, nor should it ever be done. What I do not believe in is forcing people ( dictatortor-ish laws, physical harm, ect...) in to believing the same as me. THat doesn't mean that I'm not going to explain to people how abortion is wrong, but that I would never kill, or even wish harm on someone who wants an abortion. I just clearing that up for all those who think that Pro-lifers are crazy rightiwing nazis... Why? because I can!
Originally posted by Baron Samedi Afterall, it is her body.
(Okay, I realize that I am only quoting and replying to part of your post, which is something I dislike very much because people seem to misuse that power by mis-quoting the meaning. Just know that I am replying more to the "her body, her choice" arguement then to your post.) I really cannot say how much I hate this arguement. Okay, I would like to direct everyone to Drix's first post in this thread. In it he (Dirx) goes into deep detail on how the embryo/fetus/HUMAN BABY is more than just another "part" of the mother's body. Thinking any other way is a dangerously unproven way of thinking thats sole intention is to make people feel OK, about their decision to be alright with abortion. It's not proven that a baby in the womb (at anystage, from conception to birthing) is any less human than us. Jee, we have a hard enough time as it is deciding what it is to be "human", yet when it comes to a womens "right" to disqualify her own child from the human race, we know that the "fetus surely can't be human... right?" Wrong! there is NO evidence supporting that, that doesn't add up to a flimsy, easily dismantled argument. Drix's post alone shows that. Now, being that now we see it's more than just excess of the mothers body, it can be clearly seen that a choice made for an abortion does not solely involve the mother. In fact, though the mother's body is involved, the choice effects the baby a whole h_ll of a lot more.
Originally posted by Drix D'Zanth It can't reproduce? Eventually it can. By your logic, that's saying every person under the age of 11 or so isn't a person. As i've stated in my previous post, this supports infanticide and child homocide. Beautiful. Wrong again.
I would also like to add hermaphrodites (well, maybe not all of them, but I do know that many of them are born with completely screwed up genitalia, so they can't reproduce), and men and women who are just sterile. They can't reproduce, but they are still human. So it supports more than infantacide and child homocide, it supports any type of homocide as long as the victim fits in the shoe.
Originally posted by Break Jesus... if people want abortions, they should be allowed them. It is not murder (up to a certain time), because the fetus is not living. It doesn't move, it doesn't reproduce, it doesn't excrete, it doesn't respire. The only thing it does do is feed and grow. Just like a plant but a lot simpler, even plants are more living than 1 month old fetuses (or is it feti?). If my mother chose to have an abortion when I didn't exist as a human being, then that would have been fine. I wouldn't have done anything special when I was growing and eating anyway and I probably would have existed as something else in another place. Anyway, should we really be worrying about killing "humans" that aren't actually alive yet? We're overpopulating the planet anyway, but that doesn't mean that people don't have a choice to have a baby or have an abortion. I don't see the problem with it. We should be worrying more about German perverts who fantacise about eating people (actually do eat people) and cut their penises off and then eat them. I think the real killers are the ones who do it for fun and people who kill in wars. Stop banging on about abortion, it fucks me off.
Okay, since you seem to be the expert on when it's not okay to kill a "fetus", when is that time exactly? You said yourself it's okay "up to a certain time", so that implies that you know when it becomes a "real boy" (or girl). If all you can say is "how can a few cells be a person" then don't bother replying. Who the heck do people think they are labeling what is life or what isn't? It seem that they just pick on the weak little guys, simply for convenience. Plus, this is a thread about were one stands on abortion of so course we are going "bang on" about it, that's its purpose, no need to get your panties all bunched up (sorry I usually don't say lines like this, but I've been playing a lot of Evil Dead: Fistful of Boomstick lately so they're fresh in my mind.). Well, all in all I think that I only repackaged many older posts, so I appologize for not beiong strikingly original but this is my oppinion. Though I have many more thoughts on this issue I really need to go so... I'll Be Back!!! (Hopefully!) -
Originally posted by Transtic Nerve Where do STRAIGHT people get off telling people how to define marriage. Your own argument can be just as easily used against you. Its worthless. If you don't want gay people to be married, then give us civil unions... you're not even allowing that. We don't want to get married for religious reasons, we want it because marriage is a way to show how much two people love each other and we want the things that come with marriage. Tax exemptions, the ability to leave property and money to loved ones, etc etc etc. Did you know that if I was with another man and he died, that anything heleft to me in his will could be taken away by his family if they chose to do so? If I co-owned a house with him, they could take that away, they could take the car away.... I could be left with absolutely nothing... it's happened, look it up. By denying the right for two men or two women to marry or have the rights of marriage through civil union, you are denying that love between two people of the same sex exists, which is simply not true. I wouldn't expect you to know, you're straight. Whats the harm in letting two gay people get married? I still cannot find any logical reason that should disallow two gay people from marrying.... beside religious reasons, but thats out of the question, cause as I stated, gay people don't want to be married for religious purposes. Put yourself in our shoes for once.... how would you feel? That last comment was rather immature... wasn't really funny at all. Maybe you should work on your humour, cause you're not very funny.
Well, I don't follow everybody to the polling booths (neither do you, hopefully) but I didn't just say it was STRAIGHT people definition, I said it was the majority of people in the state of California. You assumed that it's just straight people. If my memory serves me correctly Proposition 22 passed with flying colors (something like, 68% to 32%). Which means that if it was straight or not, it's still a crap-load of people (who you still cannot force your beliefs on) who believe marriage is a "union between a man and a woman" not a "union between to lovers". My point is whether you like it or not, you cannot become a dictator, and force things on people who don't want it, at least not if you are trying to do things the right way. Like I said before, if the majority of people said "yay" to marriage being a deffinition of "union between two lovers", then, even if I don't agree with it, I really can't stop it. I would just expect that the "gay community" would have as much common sense as to respect that majority of peoples decisions, whether they like it or not. TN and Sadclown, you guy's can sit here and bring to the table your deffinitions of what marriage is, all you want. But, the most you can do is let your oppinions be heard. So until the day the majority of people vote to ban state bans on gay marriage, I will defend their bans on it.
-
Okay, I have said my oppinions before and I really don't want to get into it. So please don't yell at me for being against homosexuality and don't send me hatemail for my oppionion. You aren't going to change my mind, especially over the internet. Get over it. So anyway, suprisingly, because of how I believe government should be run (though I am against "gay marriage"), if the majority of people want it, then they can have it. "For all I care; set this world all ablaze..."-Quote (Norma Jean). I may think it's wrong, but if people want to screw themselves, they can. The problem I have is how many in the "gay community" are going about it. For the rest of my post I will use California (the state I live in) as example. A few years ago (I believe 2000) there was a proposition (22) before the California voters called the "Sanctity of Marriage Act" (or something like that). This proposition was voted in and basically, in a way just solidifies the definition of Marriage by how the majority of people in California see it (and just to let you know, that's how our government should be run.) It basically defined it as "a union between a man and a woman," all it is, is a definition of how marriage should be. This simply means that most people of the state of California think that marriage doesn't mean "a union between two lovers", and I don't care who the F you are (or think you are) you can't tell people what to think. That is exactly how some of the "gay community" are going about changing this in California. A few years after the people of California voted Prop. 22 in, some openly gay state assebly-member wanted to change it, without the voters. So as you might have guessed I am very against this. At least have the boldness to try and educate people on what you want, then try and get the majority of people to okay it, instead of acting all "suedo-dictator" and going against the people, whether they like it or not. Why the heck is the "gay community" so bent over telling people how they should define "marriage". I personally think that for them it would be a heck of a lot easier (and controversial) to somehow get another governmaent recognized union, maybe "garriage" (please don't crucify me for my humor). Even though I wouldn't be for it, it still seems more logical then forcing people to change they're mind. I wouldn't try to get into an african-american club, because I'm an american from africa. I'm white, so it would be dumb, I would try to start my own club, maybe the white guys club (no I'm not racist, it's just an example, you idiots). There's my oppinion. Even though I hate to be the black-sheep of the bunch (not really), I feel very strongly for what I believe. So, even though as if almost everyone on thread sees thing differently, please do me the courtesy I gave you and try to be intelligent. In a way, I am again asking for no hateful replies, after a while those get pretty "gay" (again, don't crucify me for humor).

Girl's should not front metal bands. Now, I know you all are probably thinking I'm sexist, but I have my reasons. For, one all girl fronted metal bands I have heard suck terribly. For two, the most unatractive thing a girl can do is act tough, and so far I have not heard any girl fronted metal band that hasn't done that. For three, (and probably most important), their metal vocals are terrible, especially when compared to the pretty (singing) voices that women can posses. So, that's pretty much my oppinion, I think women should stop trying to front metal bands (unless maybe a girl fronted Blind Guardian-esque band, with all clean pretty vocals came on the scene. That might be alright...) Well, if you still think I'm sexist than that's your problem.

Okay, this may not have anything to do with what you guys are talking about. But I just bought the LORT: TT extended edition. It's great, but about 15 of the 43 extra minutes is this crappy LOTR fan club credits. WTF! Why does Peter Jackson think I'd want to watch that. He did it with the Fellowship extended edition too. All it is, is a novelty for people in the fan club; "OMG, I was mentioned in the LOTR movie." Now, yes I would probably enjoy it if I was part of the club, but I'm not, so I'm going to complain instead. Bleh, waste of 15 minutes!
