1.
"Editing" during the making of a show is something completely and utterly separate from cuts being imposed upon the final product by a different agency. As editing is a word with several shades of meaning, trying substituting in "censorship" or "censoring."
Heh, I was hoping I'd get away with that ^_^;
Common sense or not anime shouldn't be edited. Children read the Holy Bible everyday and it contains massive amounts of violence that it would be any anime to shame. What if someone edited the Holy Bible by altering God's words? Surely, God would cast a hellfire. It's like replacing a cop's 9mm bullets with pellets to shoot down the criminal. Altering a manga or anime in any kind of form is absurd and uncalled or.
I can see your point- in effect it'd be like trying to find every Greek or Roman statue in a building and covering up the naughty bits just because children are going to go into the museum. But fine and classical art is widely accepted for what it is, whareas anime isn't, and if you're broadcasting to such a wide audience the chances are at some point you're going to come across someone who'll be offended by what they see and kick up a fuss. As I've already said, I don't like editing. But at least it helps save a little of anime's reputation when it's actually broadcast. Yeah, the people who count (i.e. the anime fans) can spot the good edits from the bad ones, but at least if it helps build it up towards a wider audience, then there's a greater possibility that more animes will be broadcast and hence, more will be available on DVD. That's something I'm really after, certainy on the UK market. As long as the uncut versions are available for me to buy somewhere they can show what they like on TV- I quite like spotting what they've omitted, anyway. But considering there's little to no anime shown in the UK anyway, it doesn't make a great deal of difference to me right now. Although, this reminds me of a show I used to watch- Beast Wars. I bought the DVD set of Season 3 recently and I compared it to the shows I recorded from GMTV when it was being shown. The differences between them were enormous- I couldn't believe how much they'd censored. And even though there are some quite adult references in there I couldn't believe how sensitive they were being. I mean, they were cutting out stuff that would be acceptable even to kid's programmes being shown beforehand. That annoyed me, because at that point I didn't have access to the whole thing if I wanted it. So yeah. I think this'll be my closing post. My arguments will get too confused if I try again, heh.
 2.
I highly disagree. Just because someone smokes a cigarette in an anime doesn't mean the tobacco company is behind it. If you see an anime like One Piece and a pirate is using a gun, doesn't mean it promotes guns in some way. It's the viewer who is responsible for what he does. It doesn't matter if a person is sensible or not, humans aren't perfect and it doesn't matter if you know that. The simple point is, if a child chooses to smoke because one of his favorite anime/cartoon character does it, his the one at fault. Therefore, editing is just a disgrace to the original creator's intent.
I never said anything about corporate sponsorship o_o; I mean 'promote' in an artistic sense. And it's all very well saying that the viewer has responsibility, but that doesn't mean to say that the choices he or she makes won't be affected by what they see. There's a case in point in the UK at the moment- the live-action soap operas which contain a lot of violence and nasty behavious have been getting more and more extreme lately to try and re-attract viewers. It's almost to the point where it should be shown after the watershed, but it still has a prime-time viewing place where kids can see it, and the consequences of actions aren't always portrayed sensibly. Since it's been getting worse, there's been a much greater increase in things like underage pregnancies, rapes, beatings, 'yob culture' and all sorts of things. Now, I'm not saying that that's the sole cause of rises in crime, but the thing is that if children are seeing things that they're not supposed to without the consequences being explained, they aren't going to know whether something is right to do or not. Characters, likeable or not are portrayed as idols to which fans will adhere to, consciously or unconsciously. There've been times where I myself have imagined shooting someone in the same way that I've seen done in dramatic anime moments. i could argue that it's because I have an active imagination and daydream a lot for dramatic tension, but the fact is that I am still thinking about it. I've not carried it out, but people with less rational thought aren't going to be as careful. I'm not an advocate of non-violence and I don't believe that violent TV programmes/video games are the root of all of society's evils. I don't even like edited anime, really. But to argue that things have no effect whatsoever is wrong. Everything will have an effect, but the extent of that effect is down to the individual and it's not always a conscious response.
Editing as a whole sucks for the entire manga/anime industry. It's the creator's ambition to get his vision out and to have a distribution company edit something in it is like having someone spit in your face.
There's editing all the way through the creation process- what comes out on screen is often far from how the creatpr originally planned things, simply because the act of putting it into physical terms potentially changes the effect a certain idea has. And even hentai, which seems to be the most blatantly graphic form of anime there is in terms of explicit content, often blanks out certain areas not because it's the law (the law prohibiting them from showing everything was lifted a while ago), but because it's now a tradition. I don't think editing is like 'spitting in someone's face'. Like I said in a later post; trying to market something for kids that needs such heavy editing seems stupid, which was why I was objecting to the cigarettes in the first place. Had they chosen a different anime series to distribute instead of One Piece that didn't contain so much 'offensive' material in the first place, it wouldn't matter. Like Saito's toothpick cigarette, it's just a case of common sense with knowing which bits to edit to make the anime seamless and not-too-obviously chopped up.
 3. The best place I can advise you to start is this thread, which is the Anime Lounge's Paranoia Agent topic. Please make sure that you're starting threads in the correct forum, and to check for existing ones first once you know where they're supposed to go. To look for anime threads, you can either run a search or look through the Official Thread Directory, which contains a very comprehensive list of the animes already being discussed. As this post was, I had to delete it as spam because it was so short. I'd suggest taking a look at the Rules when you next can.
 5. This thread ties in almost exactly with this one: At what age did you start watching anime?- I really don't think there's a need for another thread which is essentially exactly the same question (if people are answering it correctly), heh ^_~ Thread closed.
 6.
Somehow the past has placed a sixty billion double dollar bounty on Vash's head, and the gunslinging pacifist can't seem to get away from money grubbing, itchy-trigger-finger citizenry. Find out why Vash is worth so much money dead! Feel the clumsy worry of the unfortunate citizens of the pulverous planet! Follow the follies of an unlikely hero in a forbidding world! Join Vash the Stampede -with his troubled past and an uncanny ability to dodge a gazillion bullets- and a cavalcade of unlucky characters on a dusty, desert planet in the distant future.
The story's quite similar to the anime, at least for the two biggest Trigun manga volumes released by Dark horse comics. The Trigun Maximum mangas, on the other hand, are very different. I won't post up the summary for that series though, as it contains mild spoilers for the first two volumes. What does everyone think of these mangas? I was first attracted to them because I was on a Trigun high and wanted to know more about the specific characters and their backgrounds; specifically Vash, Legato, Knives and the plants. The Trigun mangas I thought were great, and really spurred me on to get the Maximum mangas. But... ...so far I've found them rather disappointing. Perhaps I was expecting something a little more like the anime- Trigun Maximum is incredibly dark in comparison. but even so I don't normally mind darkness, but generally I've found it rather too far drawn out for my tastes. I haven't picked up Volume 5 yet, as I'm still deciding whether I want to continue with it or not. I'm finding it quite difficult to follow the action a lot of the time; perhaps that's why. But I was also wondering if anyone else felt the same or if I'm just inept at manga-reading ^_^; Anyway: thoughts, questions and comments to do with this series are all to be directed here, heh.
 7. Threads about games belong in the Play It! forum, even if they're to do with an anime. There's a thread about this game located here already. Even though it doesn't answer your question, I'm sure a quick Google search would be all you need, to be honest. Although having just had a look myself, it doesn't appear that any websites have an official 'list' of characters, as such. My guess is that it contains most of those already featured in the anime. EDIT: There's a list on Square Enix's game page. 8. Trace wiped the sweat from his brow, having successfully parked the Heavy Loader back in its place. The dragon's body had been disposed of and last rites taken place. He guessed something that big would be incinerated and then held in the Memoriam chamber for a while. Or used for testing. Either way, it had been a while since he'd been down to Memoriam. He had some good friends down there... A shrill beeping on his phone prompted a dull groan from his throat. "I knew I should have put this thing on silent," he sighed. "Hello?" "Vanguard, this is Agent Carrs." Hearing his callsign made him tense immediately- it was urgent if they called him personally. "Yes, sir?" "We need you for a special mission briefing in Operations. Can you comply?" "I'll be there as soon as I can, sir." "Good." * * * It wasn't often Trace had to use the service corridors to get through to Operations, but when you were over the other side of the base and had an emergency call, you didn't dawdle your way through the busy transport systems and waltz in any time you felt like it. They could track your position from anywhere in the base and a severe reprimand was in order for anyone who was thought to be slacking at the wrong time. He burst through a heavy security door from the dimly-lit maintainance corridors and into the plush, well-decorated section that was Operations. Ahead of him was the room the meeting had been assigned to- a subsequent message on his phone directed him to where he needed to be. Slamming his hand onto the palm scanner and throwing himself into the room, he didn't stop to observe the rather startled faces that watched him fall inside so ungracefully. Grunting something rude under his breath, he grabbed a chair and planted himself firmly in it, doing his best to subdue his heavy, exhausted breathing. "Ah good, everyone's here." Agent Superior Carrs said dryly, a smile gently flowing across his lips. "At last we can begin." A jug of water and several glasses had been placed on the table, courtesy of an Operations Assistant. Trace nodded thankfully and filled his to the brim, chucking it down his throat in the blink of an eye. "Thank God for that," he smiled, looking to Xander. Agent Superior Carrs slid several folders into the middle of the long black table for the congregation to look through. "Clandestine have been investigating a region of the Xi'an province in Shaanxi, China for some years now. We believe that there is an artifact of great interest located near the statues of the Terracotta Army. Until recently our searches to find anything have been in vain, but last month a team of Chinese archeologists happened upon a burial mound which is believed to be a further extension of Qin Shi Huang's tomb, but no records of its existence have ever been noted." Trace quickly glanced at the others inside the room. This wasn't a usual task force assembly... "We sent one of our disguise operatives to investigate the tomb and write a full report on her findings, but before the report could be sent to us her helicopter was destroyed and the wreckage taken away by the Chinese government. This is a highly sensitive operation- we need to find out what she was investigating, return her report and remove whatever artifact it is from Chinese territory and into Clandestine's hands. I'm sure I don't need to tell you what repercussions we could experience if we were discovered by such a potentially dangerous nation." A male Field Agent, the same sort of age as Trace, raised his hand in question. "Sir, is it right to assume this is purely a search and rescue mission?" Katz asked curtly. "There are two sections to this mission," Carrs continued. "The first is the location and infiltration of the Chinese military base where the wreckage is being kept, led by the hackers. You are to hack into their defence network and find records of any unusual activity in their military bases, and also to help the Agents, Imprint and Mirage into the base itself. Once there, you will retrieve what remains of the report, while Imprint establishes the cause of the helicopter crash. Then, you are to completely destroy whatever's left of the evidence. We expect the base ot be heavily guarded, which is why we have assembled a powerful force of Agents to bring back our information. A covert operative by themselves is only likely to be caught and tortured, and we cannot afford to lose any more Clandestine members to this." Carrs stared intently at each of the people sat before him, and they stared back; some worried, some with a sense of determination. "Once that part of the mission is completed, you will move onto the next section of the mission, which is to open the newly-located tomb and take control of the artifact inside." A tense silence descended over the room while each of the operatives considered the plans laid out in front of them. "This is a huge mission, sir. What kind of equipment will we recieve?" Laqara asked, rather militantly. This must be the young prodigy that Branit had told Trace about. "Standard covert insertion equipment, plus a few additional materials. We have no concrete information as to where the base is, but some of the folders in front of you show satellite photographs of a large bulk being transported by train to the north of the Gansu area." "When are we due to leave, sir?" the female Gaurda asked tentatively. "Your plane departs in two hours. If you have any questions, now is the time to ask."
 9. Welcome to OtakuBoards, StarKagome. Feel free to browse the boards and post as you like (within the Rules, of course). Introductory threads aren't allowed on OB, since they tend to generate rather large amounts of poor quality replies. Also, be sure to check for existing threads abut specific animes before starting new ones, either by checking the Official Threads Directory or by running a direct search. We only have one thread per specific anime because otherwise the forum becomes impossible to look through. Thread closed. If you've any questions, feel free to send a PM.
 10. I'm going to have to close this thread, I'm afraid. OtakuBoards does not support illegal downloads in the slightest, and threads created for this kind of thing will be closed immediately. Any links to illegal downloads or their host sites will also be removed- it's all in the Rules. Sorry, heh. Thread closed.
 11. Perhaps I shoud reiterate, heh: we only have one thread per specific anime in the Anime Lounge, which means any Saiyuki discussion belongs in the original Saiyuki thread, located here. This is because if we had multiple threads for every anime around, the forum would become impossible to navigate and moderate. If this was a forum dedicated to Saiyuki it wouldn't be a problem. But as it stands, we can only allow one thread for anything to to with it, along with every other series. Thread closed. If you've any questions, feel free to send a PM.

 13.
You can't slice out an aspect of someone else's creation and act as if the resulting product will be better for everyone[/i'], no matter how much more you may like it--or, in the case of 4Kids and One Piece, how much better it might sell. That's the essential problem I have with how they're treating One Piece; what they're doing to the broadcast version is honestly very silly (in rushing to alter anything which might be even minutely edgy, they've pretty much ruined whatever appeal the show could hold for kids and people of any age group, as is evidenced by its dismal ratings). But I wouldn't care much if I were able to choose between edited & unedited DVDs. Unfortunately, it looks as though I won't have that choice.
That wasn't what I was intending to say- I've a great respect for people's creative purpose. But that doesn't mean that I can't be objective about plot and character elements that are thrown into a story. I guess I'm just being pedantic- people smoke just for the sake of smoking and it's hardly an aspect of real life you can pretend doesn't exist. But I don't even know how many characters in the anime do smoke- I'm just reacting to what I've heard, which I know is incredibly naive of me. This is where your knowledge of the show comes in- I don't know anything about One Piece or its original intended audience; I've never watched an episode all the way through nor have I ever read the manga. I can only assume now that it's aimed at a region between kids and adults that can accept both styles of animation and humour. I have a strong objection to Yu-Gi-Oh's 4Kids dub. Yeah, paint in bikinis where you need to, but airbrushing out guns to leave people holding out empty hands is just pointless. It's not as if you can pretend violence doesn't exist, either.
I sort of went off on a tangent here. To clarify: I do understand why they edited One Piece, at least in regards to the smoking (which continues to be a hot-button issue here in the States). But I felt that you were saying you didn't have a problem with cigarettes being edited out because you personally dislike them. I'm sure I'd be tempted to edit Ayeka out of Tenchi (yeah, I know that's an awfully silly parallel to draw--just bear with me) if I were given the option. That doesn't make it right. CMX's version of Tenjho Tenge may be somewhat less likely to corrupt the youth of America, but that doesn't make editing the manga acceptable.
Yeah, I completely agree. Trying to market something for kids that needs such heavy editing seems stupid, which was why I was objecting to the cigarettes in the first place. Had they chosen a different anime series to distribute instead of One Piece that didn't contain so much 'offensive' material in the first place, it wouldn't matter. And I do personally dislike cigarettes. But I also said that they can be a very effective dramatic tool, and not that I disagree with having them in anything. I just don't think they're appropriate for a series that's being marketed at kids. But if that wasn't the intended audience in the first place then it doesn't matter either way- 4Kids just have incredibly poor judgement.
 14.
um my faves are Inuyasha Nene from bubblegum crisi tokyo 2040 :catgirl:
This is this thread's final warning. If the post quality here isn't brought back up to what it should be and if reasons are not given for your choices of favourite character, this thread will be closed. Kirawolfgirl, please try and add more detail to your posts- this is so incredibly close to being spam because it's so short and undetailed. Tigerfantasy17, heavy use of abbreviations are against the rules; you and cyberphenix need to try and make good use of proper punctuation when you can in your posts as well- anything that's too poor a quality will be deleted as spam. I'd like to direct everyone's attention to the Rules, and also to the fact that I never like sounding as mean as I sometimes might do.
 15.
I like the way OtakuBoards is run. ^^ Though sometimes I wish there were more moderators.
You and me both >.>; Anyway, I don't think it's really fair to scrutinise the threads that are created. Yes, the favourites threads tend to be very simplistic in what they ask and there are only so many times that you really want to read the same replies over and over again. But it's still a thread that people are welcome to create providing the correct amount of effort is put into maintaining its quality. In the end, they're simple and let people say what they want to say. There are times when I've enjoyed writing out posts in these threads more than others; explaining which of my soundtracks I like the best, for example, or which anime song particularly interests me can be really satisfying. I don't object to the ones that are detailed and have intelligent discussion in them. It's stuff like 'omg i luv trunks hes so cool an i lik his hair' that isn't what anyone really wants to read. But anyway, there are so many different favourites that can spring up that to ban them all would greatly reduce the forum's activities. I understand that most of them get closed within the first ten or so posts (and if it's a duplicate thread then it'll probably be merged or closed), but then it's up to the better members to try setting an example of what should or shouldn't be done. But if you don't like them, don't read or post in them and the moderators will deal with anything that goes against the Rules. You're not obliged to look at anything you don't want to, heh.
 16. That's fine, but a lot of the threads that have been created in the Manga Workshop don't even say what the plot's about, so it's very hard for people who want to read new manga to find out what might actually interest them. So I'm just trying to make sure that the main details are put down so that people know what's being talked about, heh. It's not a rule as such, but it's just nice for everyone else. Anyway, back to the topic.
 17. Kai, I'll give you the same response I did in the thread you created in the Manga Workshop. Please don't create threads or posts just to put up pictures of Roy unless they're ones that you've drawn yourself; in which case they belong in the Art Studio. Individual character threads can't be allowed because they'd make the forums far too cluttered and impossible to navigate. 24.
I disagree slightly. I loathe smoking. My parents have smoked since I was a child and I still find it sickening. I see smoking in the theaters all the time, and it still makes me cough when I smell somebody's smoke. Whenever I go to see a movie there's an advertisement that tries to stop smoking in all movies. They say "The more smoking teens see in movies, the more likely they'll start to smoke." I hate that advertisement as much as the anti-pirating advertisements. Seeing more smoking isn't going to make me want to smoke. It never has, and I've seen a lot more smoking than I should have in my life. I say education is the key. It's the only way children can truly understand the repercussions and risks. Sheltering is just not the answer. -ArV
Yes, but you're sensible. I'm not saying that seeing smokers on screen always promotes people to smoke, but it certainly doesn't help when kids are presented with an image of a character who they're made to identify with who smokes. It reinforces the positive associations with smoking itself. I can't remember who said it, but an old prestigious actor said something along the lines of "Cigarettes are tools for bad actors"- to put across disdain, disgust or other fairly complex emotions they'd use the smoke from the cigarette to convey the emotions their face should be able to display. They can be a very effective dramatic tool if used properly, but otherwise having them in just for the sake of it isn't something I agree with. I didn't mind them in Trigun, but to me it seemed in context with the rest of the show and it fitted with his character. Admittedly I've never seen One Piece, but if it was actually intended to be a mainly kid-orientated show then there shouldn't have been a real need to have the cigarettes put there in the first place. I highly agree that education is possibly the most important factor in deciding matters like this. But that doesn't mean I have to like what often appears to me as a vague glorification of cigarettes.
