1. It's basically a cosplayer who wears a full body suit and mask with a webcam. Nothing particularly astounding about it. I think anime characters should stay animated. Dressing up in their clothes is okay, but those huge plastic face masks are pretty disturbing. Even little art statues can be pretty weird-looking at times, and they don't even move.
2.
Perhaps if you made the PM more eye catching with a bold, colourful banner...
On a similar note, do you think it would be possible to have the individual forum rule Stickies (e.g., Anime Lounge, Adventure Arena/Inn/Underground) made permanently bold or at least highlighted in some way so that they stand out when first coming into a forum? I think the reason they get missed so much is because they can be easily looked over as being read, even though the 'Important' or 'Sticky' heads the title.
3. I think this idea's interesting- provisionally I'd say it's decent: 25 posts isn't anything special, but it won't much change the fact that if a new member still doesn't read the rules when they sign up anyway, their post quality may be just as bad and their posts are only going to cause disruption in existing threads rather than clean, new ones. I find that can be more frustrating personally, because as they aren't able to start a new thread to ask a question you're risking a whole string of unrelated replies that have to be deleted individually (especially if it's a seven-page thread- even the 'Delete Posts' option means ages of trawling through to get to the right ones). It seems sound enough, but the problem's always going to be there if the rules aren't adhered to.
4. Welcome to OtakuBoards, Sepiroth. The first thing I'd suggest doing would be to take a look at OB's Rules- it's required for all members to be familiar with them, and there are several things that need to be addressed here in relation to them. Threads to do with animes should go in the Anime Lounge rather than the Otaku Lounge- generally it's advised to keep one subject per thread- there's already a Samurai Champloo thread open in there which you can find in the Official Threads Directory Sticky near the top of the forum display. Please try and check your spelling before submitting a post. While we don't expect everyone to have perfect English, abbreviations are against the Rules, and it looks far nicer to type things out correctly and in full anyway. If you have any questions, feel free to send a PM. Thread closed.
5. What is it? Dagger IX1 Why is it nifty? Ever since Dagger joind the boards, she's been adding consistently decent discussion to the Anime Lounge. I've never seen someone with such a vast library of anime knowledge yet still remain impartial to Japanese or English dubs, heh. Not only has she seen more than I ever will in my entire lifetime, she knows and understands pretty much all of them in their entirety, and if she doesn't she's always willing to go further to find out more. On top of that, as a Moderator she's taken a more professional attitude to her job than I can even confess to have- always polite but firm, still remaining friendly and not trying to compromise the discussions in the forum itself. She is most definitely nifty. What is it? James Why is it nifty? Simply saying 'because he's James' both would and wouldn't be enough at the same time, heh. Knowing who he is it's incredibly hard not to go gushing over him about everything he does, how good he is and how friendly he remains throughout. He's done enormous amounts for OB and its community. I have always looked up to him as a role-model for many things and I'm sure I will do for ages to come yet. What is it? Arena Underground Why is it nifty? Firstly, it helps get rid of all those annoying OOC posts in the Adventure Inn and Arena. Secondly, it helps focus energy into actually putting on an RPG and everything about it. You can solve arisen problems or help add depth to a storyline, gain ideas as to where to go next and all sorts. Granted, my RPGs have still been failing even with Underground threads, but it doesn't excuse the fact that AU is a breakthrough in OB Adventuring. What is it? Shy Why is it nifty? Ever since I joined the Boards way back in 2002, I could tell there was something really special about him. I'd looked up to him as one of the three great Digimon Moderators of the time, heh, and I've never been able to find him anything less than cool. I've been very sad that his acivity isn't what it was when he first joined- he's incredibly intelligent and sensitive, but I guess when you've been around for so long you've seen almost every discussion there is to be had. His writing retains a great charm about it, and even when it seems he's not doing anything he'll come back and surprise you. I don't feel he's appreciated enough, and he should be. What is it? AzureWolf Why is it nifty? He's cynical, oft mistaken as being female and has a grudge against OBv7, but Azure still remains one of the most charming members of the board. I enjoy reading his posts, especially as he's one of the few people I know who'll make full use of the 'Reason for Editing Post' feature. What is it? OB Anthology Why is it nifty? I could name individual threads to go in here, but there've been so many ones of worth I'd lose out on my other selections, heh. It's a great place full of great stories, poems, epic adventures: Dragon Warrior's Otaku Hollow, Noob Hunter, The Reanimatrix to name but three. What seems more surprising is that even though it's getting more activity, it's remaining as high quality as it was before. The amount of imagination flying about in there is astounding. EDIT: Ah, seeing as this is the last day I'd best try and get my last four in before it's too late, heh ^_^; What is it? Lore Why is it nifty? Because she's Lore. Well, I guess I'll always know her as Sara, but however you do know her she's ultimately one of the coolest people alive. Not to get too personal about it, but I've always marvelled at her good tastes and intelligence both in debate and creative stylings- writing and art. She's incredibly talented and does an excellent job moderating the Prefecture. What is it? Panda Why is it nifty? I don't think I've ever known anyone with such a kindness as Panda. Even when she's moderating she remains fair despite the firmness she has to weild to keep things in order. Her charming personality is even more aparrent on her MyOtaku, where her posts gain the most responses I've ever seen. On top of that, she's always ready to lend her voice if you're feeling unhappy or unwell. Definitely nifty ^_^ What is it? OtakuBoards' Rules Why is it nifty? Scourge of n00bs, were it not for the rules in place at OB I don't think even half of the oldest members would have stayed around for as long as they have. I'm grateful that pretty much everyone here's devoted to quality of posts and discussion rather than posting for posting's sake. It's so refreshing to read through posts that actually make sense and aren't flames or packed full of so many abbreviations it looks like alphabetti spaghetti. What is it? The OtakuBoards Nifty Fifty Why is it nifty? I love being able to explain why I like things, and being able to do so while nominatiing things for an award is even nicer, heh. Lovely, innovative idea that I hope we'll see more of in future, hehe.
6. Welcome to OtakuBoards, takayo ^_^. If you're unsure as to what to do I'd suggest looking at other people's posts and threads before starting new ones; to help you along we have FAQ and Rules pages, both of which are essential reading. And in each individual forum there may be additional rules threads to adhere to, which should be read properly. If you have any further questions or problems, feel free to send a PM this way, heh. Thread closed.
7.
I'm not really sure what to make of it, honestly... because I've been watching Cardcaptor Sakura lately, seeing this is really jarring. And I can't help thinking that Sakura looks rather like Margaret from Madlax.
I think they look okay, alhough personally I prefer Shaoran's look in the Tsubasa manga than anywhere else. I guess there's always going to be a kind of change when it changes to animation but I think he doesn't look as mature as he should. He always reminded me a little of Kaoru from Evangelion... With regards to Sakura, I think she looks nice. Certainly different to her original look in CCS but I don't think it's a bad change. She looks to have lost some of her innocence from the manga, though. I hope that won't be the case when it's actually shown.
8.
The best way to study biases and prejudices isn't to flash images in front of them and have them press buttons, it's to see how they react when actually placed in a stiuation with old people or black people. If they treat them differently, they're biased. If someone walks into a room with a white guy and a black guy he doesn't know, look at who he talks to. It's that sort of "real-life" test that would produce the most accurate information, but that's just my opinion.
I completely agree. While experiments like this may have significance in a laboratory-style setting, trying to determine their ecological validity in real-life scenarios is somewhat different. I'm incredibly sceptical about all these results. To be blunt, it seems far too simple a test to derive complicated theories of prejudice from. A society that tries to enforce political correctness into every aspect of every life is inherently flawed, because not everyone is the same. That's not to say any type of person is necessarily worse than anyone else, but it's true. There was a debate a few years ago about how it was much harder for women to become firefighters and army cadets than men, and it's because the requirements of physical strength needed to do the job can't be reached by a lot of women because most of them aren't as strong as they should be. In a similar way, there is always going to be a difference in the way people react to others of different race/gender, etc. A study some years ago into recalling identities showed that people were more likely to remember and identify emotion in a face of their own origin than another (in criminal trials, white people quite frequently mis-identified black or oriental suspects). I don't believe it shows implicit bias if these kinds of reaction are generally instinctive anyway. Reading the FAQ, one of the things that sprung immediately to mind was that it assumes the biases you develop are formed upon no basis of physical events:
An inclination to believe that the company is guiltless could be a reflection of your positive attitude toward your spouse -- your positive attitude toward the company provides an indirect (implicit) indicator of the positive attitude toward your spouse. (If you believe the company guilty, the marriage may be in difficulty!)
The belief of whether the company is innocent or guilty would be more likely to spring from the judgement of the events in question, regardless of the emotional position of the husband to the wife. The concept's been over-simplified.
Try answering this question: Is John Walters the name of a famous person?[/i'] If you suspect yes, and especially if you were more likely to think yes than if the question had been about Jane Walters, you might be indirectly expressing a stereotype that associates the category of male (more than that of female) with fame-deserving achievement.
Another thing I'm always careful of in studies like this is the researcher's own bias being drawn into the experiment. The quote I took above shows a really decent example of a leading question, phrased in a particular way that will be likely evoke a specific answer. Something like 'Pick out names from the list that you think are famous celebrities' and then have them displayed underneath would be a better way of testing implicit bias than anything else. It's posible that unconsciously, Banaji has designed the test to bring about these results; it's quite common, especially if they're finded by biased benefactors or have a significant personal motive attached to them. I'm not necessarily implying that she's fixed the results (I don't know enough details of the experiment to know anything conclusively), but these things can have an impact on how results show through. But that's my two years of Psychology A-Level talking- I've not taken the test myself. And if I did and disagreed with the results, the majority of psychologists would immediately say that I'm in denial. Freud's theories were so revolutionary simply because there was no way of scientifically refuting them, and that's a problem that occurs with a lot of mental science. Since the brain and its activity isn't something you can measure quantitavely, drawing any kind of conclusive result is next to impossible. We can get ideas of how things work, but it's not always the case that it's true for everyone. EDIT: One final flaw in Banaji's theory.
"If Europeans had been carted to Africa as slaces, blacks would have the same beliefs about whites as whites now have about blacks."
But they were. Around 5 million Britons and Irish were taken off to the North coast of Africa. They'd sail over in tiremes and literally decimate villages, taking everyone they could get their hands on prisoner. For whatever reason, that bit of the slave trade goes completely unnoticed. And the problem with a lot of these racial studies is that the theories of who hates who is decided by the white majority, assuming that it's pretty much everyone against the whites. But what is often ignored is the racial tensions between different ethnic minorities: the black tribes in Africa have a much deeper and far more violent hatred towards each other than against whites; in the UK most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Indians, West and East Pakistanis but in their own countries they hate each other. The design and basis of experiments on theories not properly understood, whether the results can be rightfully applied or not, is flawed.
9. There's a thread already open where you can discuss Vampire Hunter D here. Please be sure to check for existing threads before starting a new one, either by running a direct search of the forum or by looking through the Official Threads Directory Sticky. Thanks to everyone for answering the questions. Thread closed.
10.
Fox: "Don't do this to me! I said go! Go on! Go! I don't like you anymore! *Sob* Go away you... why am I breaking down over a prehistoric creature. I must be on crack."
Zidargh takes it, hehe. This was not entirely off-the-wall, but far enough away to make it crazily entartaining. Have fun.
11. I'm willing to keep this discussion open so long as it remains sensible- no short, spammy replies and spoiler tags must be used if the moment you're describing includes an important spoiler to a series. In future shamanluver, please try and add more to a discussion when starting a thread; perhaps explaining what you found a particularly emotional section in an anime series and why it affected you so much. Try and refrain from using abbreviations in posts and thread titles as well, please.
12. Kudos to me for spotting the obvious, heh ^_^; Have fun.
13. George Lucas' idea for revamping the classic film E.T. didn't go down well with the critics...
14. Welcome to OtakuBoards, kinshin1. Please be aware that we have very strict policies on thread and post qualities at OtakuBoards; the rules can be found here. Please try and add more detail to your posts in future, and when creating a thread please try and be as specific but elaborative on the subject as much as possible so a decent idea of what you want to talk about is presented. Anything that is too short, undetailed or of too poor a quality will be deleted as spam. Thread closed.
15. Sith Education: This is the size of your aura before abusing the Dark Side of the Force...
16. I'm sorry it's taken so long for me to get back to this thread; I've been really busy lately- as soon as I got back from Sweden on Monday I went straight to bed and then went to college first thing Tuesday and have only really had enough time to sit at the computer now. Of course, having to choose between three incredibly good captions doesn't make things any easier, hehe ^_~ In particular I loved Boba, StrikeGundam and Who?'s contributions. But overall...
[/font']"And of course, one of the biggest problems the Wachowskis encountered when speculating the casting of pokemon in The Matrix was the undoubtable awkwardness it induced upon any flight scenes in the film."
This was the one that made it for me, heh. Nice one ^_^
17. Threads created solely for the purposes of advertisement or business soliciting are against the rules at OtakuBoards- any further threads or posts created specifically for these purposes will leave you liable for a ban. Please don't do it. Thread closed.
18. Welcome to OtakuBoards, Yume Tenshi. Generally, threads about 'favourite' or 'hottest' characters tend to lead to short, spammy replies, which is really not the type of standard we're aiming for at OB, as can be seen in the Rules page. In future when starting a thread like this, it's alwas best to get people to at least explain why they like that particular character. All of the replies here need work. Please be sure to use correct spelling, punctuation and grammar where appropriate and be sure to add as much detail as possible. Thread closed.
19.
You ran out of characters. The character limit is 1500 and basically, the end of it just got cut off, and it happened to be in the middle of a linking code. Since the character limit is inclusive to both coding and noncoding text, there's nothing that can be done except shortening your intro, heh. (funny)
The point is that I can't do that: the options and 'Submit Changes' button have all disappeared from underneath the intro text box in my 'Edit Profile' page. So even if I do edit the text, there's nothing I can do to save it. That's the problem.
20. I recently added in some paragraphs of text into my introduction. Upon checking my site to see if it had worked okay, I noticed that things weren't quite right with the end of it- the date had become part of a broken link that I used to have displayed. I wondered if I'd just lumped in too much text or something but when I went back to 'Edit Profile', I found that all of the individual options underneath the introduction box had disappeared and had been tacked onto the bottom of the intro text as HTML; favourite animes, hobbies, achievements, everything. I know it's something I've done to it; would someone mind giving me a hand to sort it out, please? Sorry to be a problem, heh.
21. The information's much appreciated, but unfortunately, as per OB's Site Rules any threads created solely for the purpose of advertisement will be closed as spam. But I'm sure people will know where to go if they're interested, heh. Thread closed.
22. Welcome to OtakuBoards, Sea of Chaos. I understand that you're new, but please be aware that we generally only have one thread per specific anime series, as stated in the 'How to Post in the Anime Lounge' Sticky thread. There's a Hellsing thread here where you can discuss the series and the answer to your question may already be there, heh. Thread closed. if you have any further questions, feel free to send a PM.
23. Morpheus, don't play mod. If you see a post that needs to be dealt with, use the exclamation point sign at the top of the post to report it and it will be handled as soon as possible. Playing mod is incredibly rude, not only to the members involved but also to the moderators. All that aside, welcome to OtakuBoards, icexfire. If you need help, there are comprehensive Rules and FAQ sections in the blue menu bar to the left, and if you need any more help feel free to PM a Moderator of your choice. Thread closed.
24. Welcome to OtakuBoards, Eternal Snow. I really hate to break up something which has been created with the best intentions of having fun, but unfortunately threads such as this can only go so far, and the length of the replies are always less than what we'd expect of OtakuBoards' standards. So I'm going to have to close it, sorry. Games like this are fun to play, but not in threads here unless you know you can make something really worthwhile of the discussion. Thread closed. Sorry ^_^;
25. Welcome to OtakuBoards, Isamu Daison. Please try and be a little more coherent when starting a topic in future; it's difficult to understand what it is you're trying to say or to gain a general point from the entire thing. Be sure to add as much detail to a post as you can so no misunderstandings can be drawn and also to make it more interesting for everyone else to read, heh. Thread closed. If you have any questions, you can check the Rules and FAQ sections in the blue menu bar to the left, or feel free to PM a Moderator.
