I think it's good to have a balance. Liking someone for what they are is far better than liking them purely for what they do, but as they're two halves of the same coin, you can't have one or the other- you have to have both, but in balance. Liking someone for what they do might be, say the admiration of a football player or an actor, whereas liking someone for what they are might be admiring someone like Princess Diana. Unless you know them personally and see both sides of the person then you'll always have a jilted image of who they are. I tend to focus more on what people are than what they do, but what they are will be reflected in what they do, so it's pretty hard. So, you gain a better interpretation of what someone is through what they do. It's quite hard to define. But basically, I look at and like people for what they are.

"Hey, what are you doing to him? Put him down!" Aidan said angrily. The man dropped DemiVeemon obediently and he scurried off, yelping in fright. "What did you do that for?" MetalArmadillomon growled. "You see how fragile this world has become?" the man said deeply. "The darkness has done this. You should know better than anyone what it does to digimon, MetalArmadillomon." MetalArmadillomon glared at the man coldly. "What do you want?" Aidan didn't like this man very much. He didn't trust him. "I want you to help me rid the Digital World of the evil influence that has it in a stranglehold. A group of evil humans and their digimon partners are trying to take over the Digital World. Their leader is called Teth." "And what's your name?" Aidan asked sternly. "Daleth Danaku. Don't you trust me, Aidan?" Aidan froze. How did he know his name? Slowly, he started to turn away. Daleth grabbed his shoulder roughly. "Be very careful who you align with. Aidan. There's a great evil in this world." Aidan stared at him hard in the eye and pulled Daleth's hand from his shoulder. "Thank you for your concern, Daleth, but I can make my decisions for myself over who to fight with." He and MetalArmadillomon strode off very quickly, leaving Daleth fuming on the beach. "Have it your way, Aidan..." He turned and disappeared into the nearby foliage, seething with anger and frustration.

Solo Tremaine replied to Boo's topic in General Discussion
Otaku Awards... That'd be fantastic... and expensive *Looks at wallet. Moths fly out*. But anywhere where an OB convention's going to be is good with me! I'd definately go. There are lots of people I'd like to meet in real life-

Shyguy to talk about Eva and lots of things,
Devidramon and shadowdramon to talk about Digimon and lots of things,
Digital_Monster to talk about Digimon and lots of things and duel at Yu-Gi-Oh,
Elite and Syk3 to talk about lots of things,
James, because he's great and said 'silly muffin' and to talk about lots of things,
Everyone who has Super Smash Bros Melee so I can challenge them,
The digi-peeps: sage, calumon_luver, clowmet, Mina Karusala, rokas and everyone else,
Lady Asphyxia to talk about and eat spaghetti carbonara,
genkai to fence him,
(Even though I don't know you that well, you all sound like nice people and you can never be friends with enough nice people) Ginny, Sara, Blanko, Juuthena, Semjaza Azazel, Break, Rain, Deus Ex Machina, Mitch, anyone else who's nice,
Possibly most importantly: Pyrophobic. She's been a great friend to me and I'd really like to meet up with her sometime soon, providing she doesn't mind, of course.
-
Aidan held his digivice to the computer screen and waited. "Are you sure this is how it works?" he asked. MetalArmadillomon looked slightly worried. "It did before. I hope we aren't too late." Suddenly, the monitor exploded with light. Before Aidan's eyes had time to adjust, he was sucked inside, MetalArmadillomon close behind him. * * * * * Aidan felt something soft underneath him. It was sand. Opening his eyes groggily, he could see a massive beach in front of him, the sea gently lapping at the shoreline. The sky was a reddish-blue, and fairly dark. Next to him, in a small crater, was MetalArmadillomon. "Did we make it?" he groaned. "If this is the Digital World, then yes." Aidan said, helping the digimon to his feet. "I'm glad it's still here." "It's very dark for a tropical beach, isn't it?" Aidan thought out loud, picking up his bag. MetalArmadillomon sighed. "That's the effect that the dark powers are having on the Digital World. It's not good. This is what we have to stop, Aidan. Aidan?" he turned round to see him staring fixatedly at something on his bag. It was a smallish, blue creature with two thick, horn-like appendages reaching from his head. A DemiVeemon. It smiled at them and ran off, whistling happily. "Cute." Aidan mumbled, slinging his bag over his shoulder. As they began to walk up the beach, they heard a strangled yelp from behind them. As they whirled around, they saw a man holding the DemiVeemon by the neck.

How strange. It must be in one of the Battle City episodes. Perhaps a dream or a shadow game. I remember the episode in the Duellist Kingdom saga where they had their souls locked into their favourite cards. Perhaps something similar happened again? I loved that episode. Celtic Guardian's what I'd be... I've no idea where that was from, though. It looks very interesting.

I feel deja vu- I've said most of this stuff so many times before... I found the Otaku.com various times while running searches for digimon for my fanfic, which was on DigimonUnlimited at the time (I never should have put it up- it was rubbish). Anyways, when that shut down, I had to look for a new place to put my fanfics up and I saw the Otaku.com again. It didn't work at first, and for a laugh I went to the boards. Immediately I signed up and the rest is history *polishes ModRod*. I'm pleased to say I've met (not in RL, unfortunately) lots of people here, many of whom I consider friends and talk to lots on MSN and AIM. What do I do here? Um... I like talking to people who have similar tastes to me. It's very difficult for me to talk about any anime series around here because it's a pretty obscure market down here in the UK. I think I know only one other person who likes anime, and he's only seen stuff I haven't. It's very refreshing to be able to come here and let off steam about an anime character or episode. And I moderate the Yu-Gi-Oh forum, which I'm very proud of. I would say I'm a semi-Otaku. I'm not absolutely devoted to anime (yet), but it is a major interest for me, and I keep forgetting to watch it as much as possible. Were I not at school, I would be a die-hard Otaku. Very much so. Watching Digimon, Zoids, Eva, Macross Plus, Nadesico, Outlaw Star, Pokemon (I guess), Blue Gender, Mononoke, Lost Universe, and any others I want to see. I have about 22 anime soundtracks, and I'm addicted to them, so I guess I'm definately an anime music Otaku. But I keep forgetting the channels' schedules, so I tend to miss them, and I haven't the money to buy lots of DVDs. Still, there's plenty of time to sort that out...

Going back to an earlier point, policemen in the UK aren't allowed to use the term 'homosexual'. Everyone else can. And besides, if they did decide to ban it, they'd have to ban all of the other far more offensive words that people use every day. I don't think it's right to be politically correct all the time. Apart from the fact it gets really hard trying to remember what everything's called, it's all dictated by the wrong people. For example (and I don't mean to cause any offence to anyone here), you're no longer allowed to call people of dark-coloured skin 'black'. I thought this was a reasonable term, and I can't see any offence meant by it, especially seeing as the majority of people are called 'white'. But now we can't. The Government decided that those referred to as 'black' were being offended. The Government is an all-white committee bar one, and this was decided before he became an MP. So it's the white (and heterosexual) majority deciding what everyone else finds offensive, which isn't fair. People should be able to decide for themselves what they'd prefer not to be called. We can't even ask people for black coffee, politically correctly speaking. We have to have it 'without milk'. It all depends on the context the word's used in, though. I've no doubt some people use these terms to offend (and 'queer', as said, has been driven into an offensive term, at least round here), and they're the ones who should be sorted out, not the language. banning the 'insults' won't stop prejudice. After all, who says anything when they're kicking someone in the head...

I think if it's to a good quality, then I think it can be good. personally, I don't like Samurai Jack, Powerpuff Girls and I especially don't like Totally Spies. I'm not sure what it is that doesn't seem quite right about them, but they just don't have the same sort of style that japanime does. Maybe it's the camera angles or the types/style of drawing used for the backgrounds and characters, but generally I think it's of a lesser quality to what you could call 'the real stuff'. From what I've seen, it lacks the precision of some of the better anime serii, and often the characters end up looking fairly clunky and with jagged, over accentuated features that don't quite fit. Mind you, I've never seen Silent Mobius, so not only can't I comment on it's quality, I can't answer the first three questions.:bluesweat: The only US animation series with japanime influences I really like is Justice League, but that's probably also down to the writers and the fact that Batman's in it.

Having washed his hair, Aidan sat back down on his bed with MetalArmadillomon. "So what do you want me to do?" "We have to get to the Digital World." MetalArmadillomon explained, scratching his right ear. Aidan began packing things into a bag. "How?" "I hadn't thought about that. Um... use your digivice, I guess." "With what?" Aidan looked at it carefully. It had a narrow slit down the side. "Is there a card or something I'm supposed to use?" "You mean you don't have any?" MetalArmadillomon looked shocked. "Yeah!" Aidan raced over to his drawer and pulled out a large deck of cards. "A few. Which ones?" "Um... there aren't any which get you to the Digital World as such, but take some anyway. We'll need them in battle." Aidan removed the special ability cards and shoved them into his pocket. "Is there anything else we need?" "Food. And then we have to leave. We haven't got long before the gate closes again."

Thanks, HyperShadow. There you go, KyJaUn. There isn't really much more that can be said. Thus, I shall close the topic. Although perhaps we could do with a card-buying/collecting topic alongside the Card Advice Thread. Or, more preferably, questions about actually collecting and buying the cards could go there, including queries about rarity and frequency and where to find them in packs. -Solo

My name means: 'Bright in Mind and Spirit, Wolf Counselor(?!), Son of JACK'. And there we are. I am now enlightened. A little. Oh- Hugo's of German origin, as is Ralph. Just to clear that up. Jackson's a Hebrew name. Were I called Tristan (as I nearly was), my name would mean 'clamour'. Which is strange.

"I need your help, Aidan. We all do. The Digital World is in danger." MetalArmadillomon squinted as the lights flickered back on. "What's happening?" Aidan sat down on the bed. His shoulder and stomach hurt. MetalArmadillomon nosed the digivice in Aidan's hand. "There's going to be an invasion. Someone's trying to take over the Digi-World and we have to stop him." Aidan shook his head, trying to take everything in. Only that afternoon he'd been beaten up and now he was being asked to save the world. "Do... are you sure you've got the right person?" "Yes. You're definately who I'm looking for." he gazed at Aidan proudly. He'd been waiting to meet him for a long time. "I like your red highlights, by the way." Aidan gave him a quizzical look. "Highlights?" His hand strayed up to his hair. It felt sticky. Looking at his fingers, he could see half-dried blood. His eyes widened in shock. "Aidan, is everything alright?" the digimon's expression was full of deep concern. "Yeah..." he said quietly. "I... meant to wash these out. I'll just be a sec." Very carefully, he walked into the bathroom and turned on the shower, washing the sticky red out his hair.

OOC: No probs. -------------------------------- Tyrius pointed up in the sky and a blazing white shape swooping towards them. Glinting in the sun, it was a massive dragon. Four golden white tails moved gracefully in the wind as the creature dived down to greet them. On its back was a man in his mid-twenties, with dark hair and dep blue eyes. "Raze..." Rhike gasped.

Aidan woke up with a start. The static on the TV screen illuminated the dark room. Groggily, he sat up and looked at his watch. '88:88' it read. Grunting angrily, he stood up. Suddenly, a noise form the kitchen startled him. A loud crash resounded through the hallway. It was a fairly big house, and noise didn't carry that well, so it had to be something big. He tried flicking the light switch. Nothing happened. "Great." Just as he was about to leave the room, he noticed a bright object next to his computer. Curious, he picked it up. It was a strangely-shaped electronic device. A creak in the hallway made him jump. Something was in the house. "Mum?" he called loudly. The creaking noise grew louder. He could faintly hear the sound of metal clicking on metal. As it approached the doorway, Aidan could see a spiked shadow moving across the floor. "I'm not Mum." came a rather tentative voice. "Who are you?" Aidan called. The shadow's owner stepped into the doorway and Aidan froze in shock. A large black metal armadillo-like creature grinned at him happily, large steel spines raised on his back. "My name's MetalArmadillomon. I've been looking for you." Aidan looked confused and excited at the same time. "MetalArmadillomon? You're a..." "Digimon. Yep!" MetalArmadillomon crawled closer, Aidan watching him every step of the way. He jumped onto the bed and grinned. Aidan held out a shaky hand. "My name's Aidan... what are you doing here?"

I'm not sure about this thread, seeing as we don't generally allow favourites topics on OB- providing it doesn't degenerate into spam I'm willing to keep it up, so make sure you give reasons why it's your favourite card to play and how you use it and I'll keep it up. -Solo Good call Solo. -Shy

I'm going to have to close this thread, I'm afraid. For two reasons: 1.We can't have links to commercial sites from OB, and this would inevitably lead to them being posted up. 2. As a consequence of reason 1, this thread becomes pointless and obsolete, as there's nothing that can be said really. It's easy to find lots of e-stores with a simple search entry on Google. Type in the product that you're looking for and go. -Solo

Aidan trudged through the dark streets back home. He didn't like coming back form school. He didn't even like going in the first place. As he passed a dank alleyway, someone grabbed his shoulder. "Hey, pretty boy!" a voice sneered. Before he could see who it was, a massive impact curled into his stomach. The punch threw him to the ground and his vision blurred in pain. He could feel someone going through his jacket. They snorted when they found nothing and started to walk off. Pulling himself together, Aidan jumped up and ran off. He knocked into another, feeling a sharp pain in his shoulder as he did so, and sprinted away. When he reached home, he slammed the door behind him and looked out of the window. They hadn't followed him. Wincing at the pain in his stomach, he slowly crawled upstairs and sat on his bed. "I knew I shouldn't have come in today." he sighed. Grabbing his remote control, he turned on the TV.

If ALL anime characters were real, we'd have problems. Not only with the Angels and Jovians trying to destroy us, there'd be flying castles, big gods and demons, hundreds of strange animals, mechas and magic flying around too. It's be chaos, simply put. Mind you, I'd finally be able to get my hands on Bakura's hair. And pilot a Zoid. It might not be so bad...

How can i change the title of a thread?
Solo Tremaine replied to SS5 Gogeta's topic in Help & Feedback
Like Semjaza said, mods can change thread titles too. I have several times. Well, at least once. So you'd just have to ask a mod very nicely to do it for you. But if it's spelt wrong they may do anyway. I do. I'm fussy about things like that. If it's a popular thread it might not be such a good idea to, as people get confused as to its whereabouts, and it could cause confusion as to what the original thread was about. -
Intelligence related to society/media?
Solo Tremaine replied to GinnyLyn's topic in General Discussion
Building on what James said: There's a difference between knowledge and common sense, and 'intelligence', I'd say, is how well you are able to apply your knowledge to a situation, using common sense. If you have no common sense, you may be knowledgable, but if you can't do anything with all those things you know you might as well not know them. Knowing exactly who J.Lo is going out with now isn't exactly what I'd call a measure of intelligence. If you have common sense, it doesn't really matter how much knowledge you have because you'll more or less always be able to react in the right way to a given problem or situation, regardless of how little or how much you know. I belive that the media and society may indirectly affect our intelligence, but not hugely. They may well affect your perception of various situations, which will affect your ability to make decisions in a social environment (and could be why there's an increase in certain behaviours). Like Deus said, the media's very sleective and this can make people see things in a certain way or from a certain viewpoint, so as to influence you- adverts do it all the time. So, it can affect your views and perceptions, but not necessarily your intelligence as a whole unless you consider intelligence a good knowledge of current affairs. Which I don't. It's good to know what's going on, but your intelligence is a greater measure of your overall levels of knowledge and common sense. I apologise for any incoherence. I just ate. -
"Sounds like fun..." Tyrius scowled at the sun bearing down on them. Rhike shuffled about uncomfortably on the edge of the saddle. "So what's this stone for, anyway?" "Lord Rochin has been re-awakened. We need to find some way of sealing him away again." Artemis explained, undoing the lid from his flagon of water. "A powerful spell was cast last time that put him into a more or less eternal slumber." "So how come he's awake again?" Tyrius asked, taking his staff into his hand. "It was only an eternal slumber if he wasn't disturbed. Someone woke him up. So now we have to seal him away again." Rhike struggled to pull his tail out from under him, nearly falling from the horse. "Why'd you get your staff out?" he asked Tyrius. "Because there's something coming..."

I don't want to join the Euro yet- I'd only think about it when it's fully stabilised. A lot of countries are unhappy about it. I dislike politics, generally. I saw the last general election posters and it really shocked me at how they tried to win votes- the campaign posters for Labour and the Tories were just slagging each other off, but the Liberal Democrats one actually showed a poignant message about education systems. The smallest party showed the best message about what they were actually going to do, rather than try and beat down the opposition by insulting them. When I'm able to vote (which'll be next year), I'd vote for the Lib Demos, as I don't like Labour's policies on spin and the Conservatives don't really know which way they're going at the moment. They aren't a strong opposition to Labour, who seem to be disorganised and dishonest. I try and stay out of these things as much as possible, as it depresses me the way the country's being ruled by people who tell the public what they want, and they really screwed up the health, education (AS-Levels are, bluntly put, stupid) and social security of the country.

I agree with you, Elite. The people who do it seem to have no idea of the consequences that their actions would bring. Once you've killed someone, like you said, you've robbed them of existence. And not only that, but you've robbed those around them of a relative, close friend and even more. You lose faith in a just world and are never really the same. It's the most selfish act there is. Do the ends really justify the means, either? Why kill someone if all you want to do is get past, or just because someone tells you to? What do you stand to gain out of it? I think the effects are worse on those left behind- the departed aren't aware that they can't feel happiness any more, but those that were close to them do. It also causes great feeings of regret- 'I should have treated them better', or 'I should have made a greater effort to have known you better', which can last a very long time. My best friend of years ago's father died of prostate cancer, and that really devastated him. he was the sort of person who'd exaggerate or make things up for attention, and I didn't believe him when he first told me. He was never really the same afterwards- I lost contact with him and he became more involved with finding friends of more material value, he stopped going to church and he lost faith in almost everything. I see him every now and then, and I still can't help seeing a slight look of loss in him. He's doing okay, though. Things do pass, eventually. I'm sorry to hear about your losses, everyone. But don't give up. Just because their life is over doesn't mean yours has to be too. I'm sure they wouldn't wish that on you, so neither should you wish it on yourself. Live for their sake.
