Personally, I normally prefer to listen to hip-hop, though for some reason I listen to rock more, I guess because it's more availableto me. ip hop is really a great genre, and though peple will say thiungs like "any rap ever played on MTV sucks" and "Aesop Rock is the only Rap that is real music". But truly, in general, Hip Hop is an amazing genre of music. And there is on such word as "AlternaRap". I've heard it used far too many times, so i want to get that straight.

When is said CKY on? I've enever heard of it.

I'd have to go with The Liars. I saw them at the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia, a small venue where a ton of amazing bands play there. I was right up fron, and I had a conversation with The Lead Singer of The Young People, and my friend got on stage with the liars a lot, stagedived, and the band invited him ot play an extra set of drums on the encore. He kicked ***, especially since they didn't know he was a drummer : ) It was really fun. Also, Yo La Tengo/ Sun Ra Arkestra was amazing. The Arkestra was so out there, but they were amazing. Space is the place! Yo La Tengo were really good music wise, but they didn't have great stage presence... Only the drummer was interesting for the most part. I've been to a bunch of other concerts, but non stand out as much as these. Of course, I'm going ot see Bowie (

I love the Donnas. I have theri CD but I never listen to it. The thing abouy the Donnas is they're not necessarily about making perfect music and structure that appeals to their audience, they're not about image, they're not about amazing lyrics, they're just about partying and having fun while you're young. All that stuff is great, of course, but when the party's hoppin and the Donnas coe on, you gotta just have fun, dance sing along, shout, it's a crazy time

I just got into this band, though I've known about them and heard their music before. I don't have much to say, but I love the song "Photobooth". They've had 7 albums, but one was a remix or something. They've also had a compilation thang. Definitely not 13.
In terms of 'emo,' I would probably reccomend a local label around here, Saddle Creek Records (http://www.saddle-creek.com). As I said, it is local, but I think it is getting a lot of national attention. Bands such as Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley.......
Not to say I'm an expert on emo (I'm not.... at all. I don't listen to it (besides Ian Mackaye's stuff and Husker Du,, and I don't claim myself to be....), but I don't really think Bright Eyes is emo. I don't know if you implied that or what, since SCR is an emo label, mostly, and Bright Eyes is on it, etc... A lot of "emo kids" as they call 'em listen to bright eyes His lyrics ARE emotional and such. But I think saying the genre of emo is simply music with emotional lyrics is way too general. I've ALWAYS, by EVERYONE been told that "emo" is short for emotional hardcore , but even "emo kids" would (attempt to) kick anyone's *** who called emo that. But That's what it's derived from, as far as I can tell. now there are emo sub-genres (screamo, pemo, )and such, it's hard to make the hardcore comparison. Not to be derogatory (is that a word) , and say bad things about a genre that does have some good qualities, but much of today's emo, especially popular emo, sounds to me like, well, whiney people singing about wearing striped sweaters and crying. Dammit, that's gona be taken the wrong way. Too bad. Anyway, sorry to rant, but emo is just really confusing. You think one thing about it and then that's not right and then things "change" for emo and I just cna't keep up.

I probably don't know you... I don't have many online friends. But thanks for the compliment. It's on the SciFi Channel at 9 on Thursday. This thursday (March 4th) is the first episode.

Well, Bad Brains are Hardcore. I mean, Emo is "emotional harcore" in actuality, but I don't really put them in the same boat that much these days. And Hardcore and Punk are pretty different. But Bad Brains is a great band. And so is The Mars Volta.
-
Well, a bit late on the topic, the word "emo" in the title threw me off... Not a fan. xbloodfightx, I suggest you calm down a bit. You may well know what you are talking about, but that doesn't change the fact that others do too.. Many people have said what I already said, and I'm a lot more into post-punk than punk, but one thing no one has brought up is that the Sex Pistols were NOT the inventors of punk. At all. Of course, punk evolved in clubs and such, but the first popular punk was The Damned's Damned Damned Damned. Check that out. Other than that, I don't have much to day.

Is anyone else anticipating this show? It looks phenomenal. I really want to watch this show, it's about 5 "Alts", or people who lead "alternative lifestyles", who live in a house with guests, "normal" people, and kick them off one by one. The last one left is the winner There are 5 alts: Don the Vampire ta' Shia the Voodoo Priestess Fiona the Witch Art the Modern Primitive Avocado the Naturist It really looks fascinating. On the site there are interviews and such with all of them. I'm really interested in the Wampire and the Naturist, but it all seems really interesting. I'm no fan of reality TV, but this looks like real quality stuff. Thursday , March 4th, 9/8c everybody! Who needs The Apprentice? :) :)

Man, I would love to get into turntablism. Time and time again I've looked into it, but can never get my hands on anything The Invisibl Skratch Piklz seem like they're amazing, and DJ. Q*Bert is apparently essential. Anyway, if you know anywhere I can my hands on some turntablism, then please tell me. I've been dying to get some of this ****.

Yeah. I guess the title is pretty out there, but whatever. One problem would be that there's probably always a good band playing on each stage at once, hard choices..... I'm going to see Pretty Girls Make Graves in about 2 weeks though.. .Listening to them right now, actually.... Actually,m there's a few bands perforiming that I already have seen live

I need a good gif animation program. Free, easy to use, I can get it off the net, works for Macs, etc. I already have the frames ready, but I have no program.

Hmm... I think it'd be fun to have all that on a cell phone, but typing anything would kill me. 3 japanese alphabets......10 keys? And reading a book.. uggh. I love the feeling of a beaten Kerouac in your back pocket that you take out on the tube and read right there.

I mean, just wondering...*whistles* Really, I think this might be the best lineup of today's bands ever. It would be a two day orgasm. Just day one makes me want to explode.

I love them I still haven't gotten my hands on Zaireeka, though I think it will be the **** when I do. I personally find Yoshimi to be their best, though my favorite song of theirs is Kim's Watermelon Gun. Anyway, they're just amazing. I suggest you go out and buy all of their albums. But that's just me.
-
I would love to go to such a festival... It really would be amazing. The Cure, my band of the moment, RAdiohead, my band of the moment from like a month ago, and The Pixies, my band of the moment from a few months ago, all uniting. Oh, and Muse. : ) Who else is there? Is there a site? But I live in PA. Anyway, the Pixies reforming really has been one of my all time fantasies of, like, forever. Too bad they're not touring aynywhere in like, a 3948302859023859032 mile radius of where I live.

Yeah, in re-reading and revision, I've been thinking of modifying Andrea's character. She's intelligent enough that she shouldn't have to learn so much, but should be able to contribute. I should've posted the whole play, so people could get a better idea of context, but it's really in it's beginning stages.

Uh, I came here back whenever, I think it was july 2002. I made a few friends (most of which no longer come 'round to OB) and then there was the big down that occurred in august, and I've been posting on and off since. Boring story, eh?

Gay Marriage, PLease, let's be mature
Genkai replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in General Discussion
Marriage has always been the bedrock of society. One man marries one woman and they raise their children together. If you begin to blur the definition of marriage, you will start to lose the sanctity that marriage currently enjoys. Take the Netherlands for example, which is a secularist paradise. Homosexual unions have been legalized there for a little while now. Currently, marriage there is a joke and holds very little value. That country?s been burdened with far more than it?s fair share of dysfunctional families and unwanted children. Why? This is due to the fall of marriage. Without stable families, a nation will become unstable. -Boba
Marriage is the bedrock of society, true, but I don't think gay marriages will change that. Marriage is two people commited to eachother ( *glances at signature*). There are so many reasons that marriage is falling apart that have nothing to do with homosexuality, gay marriages will give the rights of a committed couple that straight couples enjoy and take for granted. A gay couple that had been together for years and years doesn't have some of the same rights as straights. For instance, such a couple could live in the same houehold and pay for it in joint, but if the one whose name it is under dies, does that mean that the other half of the couple gets it? No. Sorry, that's a bad example, but really, I need to ask... How is it hurting anybody to help gays? There're no valid reasons, in my opinion, for gay marriages to become illegal, especially not fearing that society is going to become unstable because of it.
....our duty as a species is to reproduce.
Yeah, but they're gay. So they're not gonna have sex with a member of the opposite sex in order to reproduce , anyway. There've been gays all throughout time. Not to mention, in the last 40 years, during which gays have mecome much more open, the population has DOUBLED. That's not even an ISSUE.
Can you consciously choose to be homosexual? Yes, you can.
NO!! If you were LGBT, you would know, it is not a concious decision. At ALL. Really, it's not. It blows my mind that anyone could actually think this. Sorry that this post was all over the place. I probably seem like an *** who has no idea what he's talking about. But really, I've looked into this. And I'm not seeing anything negative. -
Hmm.. Rapwise, I'm a big fan of Talib Kweli, Hi-Tek, The Invisibl Skratch Piklz (DJs, actually), Public Enemy, Mos Def, De La Soul, Gang Starr, Outkast, Jurassic 5, The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest, Black Star, Common, Missy Elliott, Bahamadia, Ozomatli, MC%, and a few others. Hmm... While I lived in England I loved Fortysomething (any Brits know if it's still on? new season?), Teachers, and Adam and Joe Go Tokyo, even though the lattermost wasn't a sit com.

This conversation is from a play... It's mostly one person, but I think there's a break The context is that they're discussing on of Andrea's stories. This scene pretty much expresses my views of existentialism. Some may recognize many of the ideas as being in Waking Life..... I just threw in the responsibility thing to narrow in on because that was in Waking Life, too. ANDREA Hey, what do you mean by "faux existential"? RACHEL Well, I could see you going for what is widely considered existentialism. ANDREA So it's not existential? RACHEL Right. See, I can't take existentialism as just another French fashion, or historical curiosity. I think that when you read that stuff, it's giving an important message, important for this new era of life. It feels like we're losing what it is to live life passionately, the virtues in the sense of taking responsibility for who you are, and the ability to make something of yourself. It, existentialism, that is, is often talked about like it's an idea of sadness, but I think it's not, I think it's just the opposite. Sartre once said he'd never had actually felt a day of despair in his life. When you read these guys, though, you don't feel sad, you feel excited, you have this active sense of exuberance. ANDREA Well, in this story I'm talking about this idea of responsibility, because it's just out there, like when I say ? RACHEL (interrupts) When Sartre talks about responsibility, he's not talking about something abstract. He's not talking about the sort of self or soul that the theologians would rant and rave about. It's something really solid, like, it's very concrete. It's just like, you and me, talking, making decisions, taking action and accepting the consequences. It might be true that there are 6 billion plus people in the world, but whatever an individual does, it makes a difference. What existentialism's message is, well, one of them, at least, is that we should never simply think of ourselves as a victim of a bunch of different forces, like leaves blowin' around in the wind, without any free will. It's our decision who we are. Always, you know? ANDREA Okay... (looks off into space, going over what RACHEL just said in her mind.) RACHEL Sorry, man, I just sorta ranted there. I went to a lecture on this stuff about a week ago and I couldn't help myself. Just thought about sharing it, since there are many different ideas about existentialism. Once I get my play back with comments and such, I'll put up the whole revised version and such.

Meh. that's what I hear when I listen to some of my friends' death metal. Most of it sounds the same to me, and it's along those lines.

I have a few. My favorite one at the moment is my Ziggy Stardust shirt but of all time would have to be my Boondocks Okayplayer shirt, my Phrenology Okayplayer shirt, or my Wagamama shirt. Yup yup.
