Men have the advantage of physical strength to defend themselfs. To answer the question, I think in todays society it's equal, both genders have their hardships, but like AnimeLover said in the past Men had it easier, for example in the 18th century women were treated disgracfully, they were only considered good for conceiving children and raising them.
