2. So my fiancée got me the Limited Edition Marvel Universe DVD collection. He originally ordered it awhile back, around my birthday in September, however Marvel and Disney were having some sort of lawsuits over the product so he had it ordered but there was no definite time frame to when we would get it. I completely forgot about it. So it's my late birthday/Christmas present. Enough about that. It's the Tesseract case with 10 discs, Iron Man 1 and 2, Thor, Captain, Hulk(the good one, with Edward Norton), The Avengers, and tons of extras. It also has files of Banner, Stark, and Captain all sorted in the way Shield would have it in its Confidential files. I haven't had time to look through the whole thing yet.
3. So the latest in "books turned films" category is Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games trilogy, and I am liking what I'm seeing so far, even if it is only a poster. But what a poster. Official Motion Poster Like, damn. So, your thoughts, expectations, misgivings, yadda yadda, etc.? Oh, here's the Official Site and the IMDB page as well and the normal poster if you want it
4. TRAILER IS GORY. BE WARNED. This trailer was released about a week ago, and a friend of mine brought it to my attention today as he knew I'm a big fan of the original movies. After watching the trailer and doing a bit of reading on the movie, I have to say I'm pretty hopeful. Both Sam Raimi (creator of the original movie) and Bruce Campbell (lead actor in the original movie) are on board as producers, so we know it's not just some faceless Hollywood company who bought the rights to it and is doing whatever they want with it. It's not using the same characters from the original movie, which to me is a huge plus because there's no way anyone could live up to the legend that Ash (Bruce Campbell's character) became. All in all I can tell that this movie isn't trying to be the original Evil Dead, but instead is going to be what Evil Dead could have been if it had all the technology and budget big fims have today. A lot of people associate Evil Dead with the sort of slapstick horror-comedy that the latter movies (Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness) fell into, but lets not forget that the original film was actually trying to be serious, grisly horror and managed it really well for what it was. There will be no CGI used in the making of the movie, so we can expect some impressive make-up work, props, and smoke-and-mirrors. So as a fan of the original trilogy, I expect this movie to please me in the same way that I, as a fan of the Planet of the Apes franchise, was pleased with the re-imagining that was Rise of the Planet of the Apes in 2011.
5. Synopsis Eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, the terrorist leader Bane arrives in Gotham City, pushing it and its police force to their limits, forcing its former hero Batman to resurface after taking the fall for Harvey Dent's crimes. Trailers Trailers I am so flipping excited for the release of this movie, especially with the new trailer being released. I'm not sure how I feel about some of the Inception cast coming into this movie, but it IS Christopher Nolan, so I should probably just let him do his thang. Batman is my favorite superhero and I absolutely adore what C Nolz (I can call him this, because we are best friends) did for the franchise. Definitely my favorite series of all time. What do you guys think? Gonna see it?
6. I've been having movie quotes running through my head all day and I figured 'Why not have a bit of fun with them?' So I decided to start the oh so popular 'name that..." game. The rules are simple. I start of by quoting a line from a movie. Whoever guesses it correctly first will then have a turn at quoting a line from a movie and so on and so forth. Now for my first quote I will start with an easy one. "Do you feel lucky? Well do ya' punk?"
7. I originally heard about this movie several months ago, back when it was going by the name Caesar (which changed to Rise of the Apes before going to Rise of the Planet of the Apes). Being a fairly big nerd as far as the PoTA franchise goes, I was pretty excited and hoping for a giant step up from Tim Burton's remake of the original movie. Though after seeing this trailer I'm left a bit skeptical. D: As far as I can tell this is a remake, or maybe more accurately a re-imagining or retelling, of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. For those who haven't seen it, the movie essentially sets the premise that Zira and Cornelius (the two apes from the original movie) came back in time and warned the humans of what their future was like, in hopes that they could prevent one species from dominating or exterminating the other. Humans, being human, feared this news and the messengers who brought it, and ordered their execution, but not before Zira gave birth to a son who was sent into hiding. Years later their son, Caesar (who, as a descendant of Zira and Cornelius, is an intelligent ape capable of speech), would be brought out of hiding into a major city, where he sees the state of his kind; kept as slaves, or pets at best. After a few inciting incidents Caesar starts a rebellion. This remake seems to stray away from all of that, which makes me really sad, lol. The idea that the ape intelligence was something man-made and that it somehow made them "evil" (or that they're inherently so) seems like it just makes the story too black and white and loses all the dynamic and flavor of the original movie. Now, given, the original film was set as part of a series, and perhaps they wanted this movie to be able to stand alone and merely hint at the old franchise for us old folk and nerds. Though, if that's the case, I wish they would have stuck with a less traditional name. I mean, when I originally read about this film, it was set next to an image of the main ape and was titled Caesar, that was enough for me to know what that movie was going to be, lol. So I don't know, as an avid fan of the original movies, it's going to be hard to watch this and judge it on its own merit. What are your thoughts?
8. Every time I'm swamped with homework, I fall into a black hole of MST3K on youtube TV was so much better when this show aired, for sure (esp. the Mike era!) obvious favorites: The Final Sacrifice, Space Mutiny, and Giant Spider Invasion I don't know much about the volume sets though~~~~ what do you guys recommend? 9. I don't even remember how I found this video, but like... it's the best shortest film ever. Should Portal: No Escape be made into a movie? What are your thoughts on it? Would it be a waste of time or a big hit? My opinion is that I think it needs to be made into a movie, but it probably won't. But who knows. *shrugs* And the music is what really had me. I haven't completed the game yet (mostly because I don't have the time
and I'm already stuck ._. and I haven't played the first Portal
), so I don't really know how well it this video goes along with the game. And for all I know, it's probably from the first Portal. i'unno
10. Disney takes on Rapunzel. Discuss. Very reminiscent of classic 50's era Disney movies, such as Cinderella, but with a definite touch of 90's high adventure Disney a la Aladdin. Great soundtrack, as can be expected of Alan Menkin. It's not his best, but it fits the feel of the movie really well and it gets stuck in your head just as easily as anything else he's produced. Flynn is an absolute hoot, and I really love what they've done with Rapunzel herself. Rather than doing the traditional thing Disney does and make her look refined, adult and traditionally beautiful, they opted to just make her over-the-top adorable. She's somewhat short, has a rounded face and huge eyes, extremely energetic, slightly unsure of herself and tends to trip over her own hair a lot, which is probably not difficult when there's 70 feet of it trailing all over the place. Despite all this, she manages to handle herself well enough in a fight and uses her hair to pretty good effect as a makeshift rope. But I ramble. Don't wanna spoil it for anyone, so I'll just cut off here and let you all talk among yourselves. Overall, I loved it and hope it's current success can get Disney back in the studio and possibly set them into the mood for another official Disney Era. But then again, What can I say for myself?
11. [s]Figured posting this thread in this area would be the best course of action, but feel free to expand beyond music/movies/TV since making equivalent threads in the video game and anime sections would be silly and redundant, I think.[/s] lol I'm dumb Anyway! Many of us are experienced in our hobbies of choice -- whether they be movies, anime, video games or what have you -- but the beauty of our vice of choice is that no matter how much we consume, there is always more waiting just beyond the horizon, from the past, present and future. That includes super popular stuff that, for whatever reason, we just never got around to experiencing. This is the thread for airing out those staples of the medium in which everyone but us has partaken. By the way, this stuff kills me in particular because as I've grown older, I've become much less of the type to avoid works that are widely beloved/acclaimed due to hype aversion. I genuinely want to immerse myself in things many people enjoy and feel what they feel when they watched it for the first time. Plus, I'm never pushed into watching anything, anyway; I watch stuff because I genuinely want to watch it. But sometimes, I just inadvertently avoid things even though I'm pretty sure I would enjoy them. (Which is why I went without seeing Citizen Kane for such a long time.) I hate that. :( I'll just focus on movies here, but I'll probably add other stuff later on ... A Christmas Story: I have no idea how in the hell I have gone so long without watching this, especially since it's on like 24/7 around the Christmas season. This was going to be the year that I finally saw it, but unfortunate circumstances put a stop to that. And I can't watch it outside of Christmas, because it just feels weird and dirty. It's a Wonderful Life: Another Christmas flick, this one the ultimate in schmaltzy holiday movies. But I can enjoy schmaltz as long as it is well done, so I doubt I'd have a problem with this. It's even my mom's favorite movie! Alas, I have yet to sit down and watch it. American History X: There's actually a specific reason for this: I just don't want to be traumatized by the infamous curb stomping scene. Just the thought of it frightens me. Lawrence of Arabia, Gone with the Wind, Dr. Zhivago, et al: I have to really be in the mood to sit down and watch these long ass epics, especially now that I have less time available to fart around. One day, though. One day. That's enough for now. I can think of many more later. Let's hear from all of you! EDIT: Haha, how in the hell did I post this in the video game forum?! I can't even blame the morning for this. Ah well, whatever, it works anywhere, but if someone could move the thread, that would be nice, too!
12. I guess as OtakuBoard's official pirate it's my duty to post this up. I'm surprised there hasn't been anything made for it yet. On Stranger Tides is the fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean series. It took the creators a long while to figure out what plot to go with after coming up with several, and it took them even longer to decide that stuff involving outer space or sky pirates might be pushing it. Now I love sky pirates like the rest of us, but at least all the rest of the story elements have been believable thus far. Having said that, the plot of the new one follows Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa once again as they hunt for the Fountain of Youth (as a team or not, I'm unsure). Either way, the main villain of this trilogy (yes, there will be three) is Blackbeard played by Ian McShane and his daughter Angelica played by the very foxy Penelope Cruz. They're all in search of this life-giving myth, so naturally you'll find plenty of betrayal and criss-crossing of sides and all that that we've come to expect of the Pirates movies. Oh, and there are zombies and mermaids. Fortunately we're not talking about Dawn of the Dead zombies. They look more like natives that haven't bathed in a while, so I like what they did. Also, to clear up confusion on something I've been asked about a million times, Will and Elizabeth are not coming back for this trilogy. This is the Jack and Angelica love story. I could explain why in detail but it'd spoil some of the series for people. Then again, they shouldn't be reading this thread if they haven't seen the first three anyway. If you haven't watched the trailer, here it is for you. I watched it literally the second it premiered on Yahoo. I'm such a lamewad.
13. Ten days. Ten whole days until the US release of what could possibly be the greatest film ever created. Yes kiddies, I'm talking about The Expendables. Now, in case you have been living under a rock for the past six months (really, this movie has been promoted almost non-stop for the last six months), The Expendables is basically a wet-dream for action movie fans. It stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Eric Roberts and, my favorite action hero ever, Dolph Lundgren (you know you loved Showdown in Little Tokyo). It also features the Govenator and Bruce Willis, how cool is that? I know what you are thinking, you're thinking "HC, the last time I saw a movie with an ensemble cast this great I had to go kick Al Pacino in the nuts for agreeing to appear in Ocean's Thirteen". I too have been disappointed in the past by movies filled with all-star actors. But this is going to be different. This is an action movie. The best action movies are campy, they are filled with over the top explosions, the roar of gun fire, and muscle strewn men that can punch through brick walls. They have cheesy dialogue, bad puns, and usually feature "buddy" themes that border on being homo-erotic. In other words, they are pure nuggets of awesome, and this film has the potential to be the biggest awesomeness nugget of them all. Sure, I might not know what The Expendables is about (I gather from the title that it is about a group of soldiers that are expendable), but I do know that it is a roller coaster of testosterone, and I'm in line for the front car.
14. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I just saw this a couple hours ago and I am still picking up the pieces. I cried a whole bunch. It has the most bittersweet ending ahgkhfgklhlkhglkhfklhgl. The rest of it is either funny or stunning. The sum of the parts is AWESOME. So go see it. Right now, if you can. You can't afford to waste any time not seeing it. What if you die before you get around to it? You don't deserve that. This may be the most perfect movie ever made.
