Kaze
I've seen this movie on DVD, I very much enjoyed it. Some of the best animation I've ever seen, but that's to be expected from a movie by Hiyao Miyazaki I suppose. One of my favorite parts was when Haku was being chased by the paper.....things.
Sara
Originally posted by maladjusted ...and I loved those ducky-looking things. :P
Yes! I love the ducky-looking-things! *laughs* When I first saw them, I was like, "It's a giant duck totoro!" It was so funny. ^_^ I also like the Radish Spirit. Just the tone of voice Lin (Lin? Was that her name, I can't remember!) said it in: "The radish spirit," made me laugh. It was great. The paper things freaked me out. You wouldn't think paper could be dangerous, but on the other hand, imagine getting thirty-thousand papercuts. Ouch.
Pagan
This is my favorite anime movie of all time. It was the anime version of Alice in Wonderland(my favorite book). The world of Spirited Away was so rich in texture and color. The characters were well drawn and very interesting. My favorite character was the little coal spiders they were so funny and actually made me laugh. I'm glad they didn't make the girl apperance perfect because we need more imperfect characters. eleanor
I also thought Haku's dragon formed looked very cool. ^_^ The animation looked very smooth throughout the whole movie. *raises eyebrow* Well, you know, most anime movies do, but whatever. One thing that I found sort of odd was when
Chihiri was crying while eating those rice-meals, and her tears were huge.
I loved the movie to death when I first saw it in the movies, but I always get bored when watching it again. I don't know, it doesn't interest me as much. Strange though, because I've seen my Evangelion: Death and Rebirth about 10 times and I never get bored of it. ^_~
shibatku
The movie was great. The plot line was really good. It had good animation. I liked it. I give it a 9. It is really good, but it still has some work to do.
OtakuSennen
I enjoyed this movie a decent bit. Actually, it's the first anime DVD I ever owned, which was the foundation for my small yet growing anime collection that I have today. I really didn't have much interest in purchasing the movie until my mom watched the Oscars and saw it win for best animated picture. After that I did some research on it, and found it to be more interesting than I expected. But I did find it to be pretty cliche, plot-wise. Yet still, it was original enough. But what truly got me was the art's quality. The background were so detailed you could have mistaken them for individual paintings by a professional artist. The one problem I had with it, however, was Chihiro's dub's voice. It was so high pitched (not that that's uncommon in dubs) But in some scenes, such as when she was talking to her pig parents about how she's gonna rescue them, the dialogue is a bit strange in a corny way and the actor lacked expression, it seems. Of course, that's where the Japanese language/English subtitle feature comes in. Ah, I love DVDs... Actually, that's the only non-TV based anime DVD I own to this day, though I'd like to buy or rent Princess Mononoke as well. But first comes End of Evangelion, as I am saving up for it. I heard that Hayao Miyazaki is now retired from film making and has decided to write novels now.. Is that true, or was that just a silly little rumor in Anime Insider? future girl
Ah, I love Spirited Away. (Studi Ghibli in general is just awesome.) Anyway, I had to watch this movie in theaters and the only day I could was the last day it was playing in theaters. My mom got lost even though I gave her accurate directions that she decided to ignore and we almost crashed into this guy who got really pissed and tried to kill us. We got there 15 minutes late, it was hilarious and all worth it. I love this movie, the art is incredible. The dub is not to my liking though, Chihiro's voice is very emotionless, and Haku sounds much too old. I bought the DVD the day it came out and watched it in japanese :) I have a friend who says this movie changed his life. According to him, he doesn't need to watch another movie ever again because he found the one he needed to see ^_^
Stick Fairy
Originally posted by maladjusted One thing that I found sort of odd was when
Chihiri was crying while eating those rice-meals, and her tears were huge.

Yeah, I didn't really get that either. I kinda thought it was part of the spell though. I LOVE the Radish Spirit! My friend and I actually made him the patron spirit of our walking team! Very strange, yes. I'm currently saving up to but the box set of the Nausicca (sp?)manga. I heard that the anime was great, but the manga is supposed to be even better, so I can't wait. I saw Totoro this summer, and found it very cute, but kinda plotless. I mean,
two girls think their mom's going to die, so they start seeing Totoros?
I didn't really get the point, but it was still sweet and cute. Spitited Away's better though. And while I heard he retired, I also heard that he's coming back to do an adaptation of a novel called Howl's Moving Castle, by Gail Carson Levine (one of my fav authors). AzureWolf
I think the rumor is bogus. If Miyazaki was quitting, I think there would be a significantly bigger buzz than the complete lack of one. And, as Stick Fairy mentioned, this interview can attest to his activity. Besides, Miyazaki is the antithesis/anti-drug of Jimmy Hendrix: You don't need to be high to create something erratically wonderful.
G.D. Ryoko
I thought that Spirited Away was a beautiful movie, just like Princess Mononoke and Kiki`s Delivery Service. I loved the animation and the plot of the movie. I even got my mom to watch and she really doesn`t like anime. Well it was a great movie but I hoped more would of happened with Chihiro and Haku, like they would see each other again or something.
amibasuki
Spirited Away is awesome, even looking past the artwork (loved it so much I got a SP artbook, and love it to death). the movie actually has a lot of meaning. granted, if I hadn't read the artbook, which has all this good information about the movie in it, I wouldn't be able to pinpoint them, lol. since I'd be absolutely horrible about trying to summarize everything, I'm just going to quote some stuff from Miyazaki in the book. "The main theme of this film is to describe...some of the things in this world which have become vague, and the indistinct world which tends toward erosion and ruin. ...Words are power. In the world Chihiro wandered into, words have a great importance and immutability.
At Yuya, where Yubaba rules, if Chihiro were to say, "I don't want to do this," or "I want to go home," she would be eliminated... On the contrary, if [she] says, "I will work here," even a sorceress can't ignore her.
In these days, words are thought to be light and unimportant like bubbles, and no more than the reflection of a vacuous reality. It is still true that words can be powerful. ...In a dangerous world, Chihiro began to come alive. The sulky and languid character will come to have a stunning and attractive facial expression by the end of the film. The nature of the world hasn't been changed in the least. I am arguing in this film that words are our will, ourselves and our power...." clever/smart guy, he is. as an odd out-of-nowhere sidenote, I loved Yubaba's (Japanese) voice, lol. I bet the va who played her had a fun time acting it out ^_^.
MiWa
"Spirited Away" is one of my favorite anime movies. The background illustrations are gorgeous. I've seen the movie too many times to count and I never get sick of it. This is the kind of movie that toddlers to seniors can enjoy. Everyone that I've showed the movie to has just loved it! duorocks17
Spirited Away is one of my favorite anime movies, it wasn't my first, and definately not my last. my gosh, everything this guy has done is awesome! I liked Castle in the Sky, and Kiki's delievery service, but back to spirited away. The music was great, and so was the story. I thought it was funny what happened in the beginning to her parents, but i thought it was really cool how she was able to pick them out in the end. that would be some test! my favorite was the little coal spiders, and of course, i liked Haku! It was the first Studio Ghibli movie I ever saw, except for part of Princess Mononoke, and it inspired me to buy Castle in the Sky. And who wouldn't like Haku? ~Dagger~
KarmaOfChaos
Spirited Away was by far one of the best theatrical animations out there. I have always been a big fan of Totoro and Princess Monoke, so I was very excited about Spirited Away, and it did not dissapoint me. Although Totoro will always be my favorite (gotta love the dust bunnies and cat buses), Spirited Away has definatly won a home inside my anime collection. I recommend it to anyone out there, even if they're not a fan of anime. It just might turn them into one. ^-~ -Karma
Krademon
I quite like the way Anime of this sort tends to have very imaginative characters and theories. Like the soot spiders or the pig curse. Very imaginative.
Kenshin_Himura_
I thought the movie was rather good, however I liked Kiki's delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, and Princess Mononoke better. I currently have the DVD of the Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Castle in the Sky. I have an english dub of Princess Mononoke taken off TV. I prefer the Subbed versions of all my DVD's, though the dub of Princess mononoke was good^_^ I would recommend all of these anime movies to any fan, even some that arn't^_^. I watched mononoke about 15 times at least ^_^; I liked it that much. The DVD extras of ones that I have are very limited, though the storyboards are interesting and how Spirited away also has a few other extras, like what work was like when making Spirited. I borrowed a Mononoke DVD from the library, it didn't have really any extras except for commentary and trailer I think-_-.
MiWa
I own this dvd. The attention to detail of this film is absolutely fantastic! The special features section that shows Miyazaki at work is incredible.
Artemis
I finally saw this not too long ago. I'd noticed it on movie rental shelves before and just passed it by. It looked kinda stupid to me. Then durocks had me watch it with her. It had some weird parts, but it was actually really good. I'd be up to seein' it again so I could analyze it better. The animation itself, like everyone else says, is incredible. I also appreciated the story line. It was pretty neat how it all worked out. ~art~
Cahoots34
I didn't really like it. I mean, not to be blunt, but I think Miazaki can and has done far better. The artwork and special effects in general were, of course, amazing, but the plot seemed more than slightly contrived. Haku and Chihiro, while perhaps a likely couple in later life, seemed to fall in love for no reason more than the necessity of such a cliched bond between them. How many children find true love at 10 years old (or something to that effect), especially with a voice actress like Chihiro's? The entire plotline seemed as though it were just trying far too hard to fit in with a certain pattern while still staying unique, which is definately not something common to Miazaki films, which are by nature original and complex in drama as well as visual effect. When you're one of the most reknowned(sp?) animators on the planet, you hardly need strive for conformity. I hope that Miazaki-sama remembers that. the_fizz
I enjoyed it so much I went out rented more of Hayao Miyazaki movies. I first saw it with my nieces and they loved it as much as I did(and I'm in my 20's)!!! I would have to say that my fav part would be when they have to clean that hugh tub and so goes to get the soaps and no one but no-face sees her so she goes back and he comes and gives her all the soaps for the bath. It was so cute and funny. THE FIZZ:wigout:
Ellester41
Yes, of couse I saw it< but I have one question... ok- when the bad witch lady took away part of Chihiro's name, it became Sen. How? Kohaku turned into "Haku". That makes sense. So how can Chihiro turn into "Sen"? Oh- overall, the movie was great. I think it was funny and cute when No-face spit out the frog. Don't ask why. I'm wierd. I am buddy-less! Will you be my buddy? Ellester41@aol.com

Chihiro's name in Japanese, when taking away Hiro, can be read as Chi or as Sen. Kohaku is basically the same, but again they probably could have said Shiro or Haku.
