Voting? What's that?

So yeah, today was election day in the US. Well for governers and Senate and Congress and all that mumbo-jumbo. So I ask, did anyone vote today?

I live in the not so great state of Florida and this was my first time voting. I'm sure you all know Florida's reputation on voting. Yeah we don't know what we're doing half the time. But the bigger case was the govenatorial race between Jeb Bush (brother of President dumbass) and Bill McBride. I voted McBride if anyone cares and don't jump on my case unless you LIVE here and know what Bush has done to our state. Anyway, that wasn't the only BIG thing on the ballot. Amendment 6 was proposed. Amendment 6 will prohibit indoor public smoking. I thought this was a great idea and so I voted for those two reasons mainly. We had 10 Amendments on the ballot, some of which were good, some bad.

So who voted? And if you could but didn't, why not?

Im Canadian, And I just turned of age to vote. We didnt have a vote today. But, I'm gona ask an On-topic question just to add to the whole voting discussion without making a new thread.

From my American history class, we learned all bout how the president is elected in USA. And there is so much contraversy I cant quite get my self to grip the whole concept. No one singular person average joe type guy in the USA TECHNICALLY has a say in who becomes pres. In fact they have to vote for a certain guy/girl who says that they will vote for a certian presidential candidate. However that person could if he/she wanted to, change their vote.

This is where the contraversy for me starts. Bribes, secret exchanges made to ensure that this 'voter' gets a position somewhere for giving their vote to a certain candidate. I dont know really but...What do you people think about voting in the USA?

In Canada, each person votes, all the vote's are balloted, and than tallied, and the Party in which gets the most votes wins. SIMPLE.

Parties include: Liberal, Progressive Conseratives, National Democratic Party, Reform Party, The Bloque Quebeqois, Etc... Anyway, WE have like 39 million, so our voting scheme is not really that bad for us.

Anyway...thats my Canadian perspective on an American topic. hehe.

I didn't...and if I could, I honestly don't know who I would have voted for. Our Governor's race has been one big scandal since summer.

One candidate was disqualified for forged names, and the other two have been running the most laughably mud-slinging campaigns I've ever heard of.

I REALLY wish the Americans could make their voting like that. We use that ridiculous Electoral College. It's not TRUE democrasy unlike what the Canadians have. As int he last election, Gore won the popular vote, meaning he got the most votes of the people individually, yet still Bush won because of the stupid electoral college (and stupid Florida) The elctoral college is a good idea in thought, but when it comes to action it sucks in a close election like the last one. True democracy did not prevail when Bush was "elected" President.

Yeah, our American history class kept close dibs on the election. WE, as good ol' neighbors and still unfamiliar with the american system had all placed a bet with our teacher that Gore was going to win. If we won, she woulda bought us pizza or somthing, but if we lose, we had to each sing the american national anthem in front of the class..or somthing rediculous like that.. cuz honestly, half of us dont even know our Canadian anthem lol...anywya we were all surprised when we lost..and the preceeding days of GOD AWFULL singing was definately not worth it lol.

Okay, each state gets a certain number of 'electoral votes.' This number is equal to the number of people that state has in both houses of Congress.

The voters....vote.

Now, going back to everyone's favorite worn-out topic: Election 2000.

If the majority of people in Wisconsin vote for Al Gore, every
electoral vote Wisconsin has goes to Al Gore...even if he won only by a slight margin, as in Election 2000. So whoever gets the majority in each state, gets every 'electoral vote' for that state.

So, yes, you sometimes end up with 'Minority Presidents,' where they get the majority of the popular vote, but not enough electoral votes.

And then there's Florida. ^_^

And yes, I believe the official voters can go against the majority rule.

I'm 16, so no voting for me. But, I did get the day off school for some odd reason. Up here in Massachusetts, Mitt Romney is running for govenor. I woke this moring around 10 to hear the whole ringing. It was a "vote for mitt" recording. about 1 hour later, the same damn recording. I yelled at it. It made me feel better. ^_^

I don't exercise my right to vote because I never feel truly educated about the candidates that are participating. I know what 80 percent of the general public knows, media advertisments that mudsling and spew venom, usually because of an incident that happened in a candidates distant past.

Anyways, in North Carolina the main event is for the Senator Jessie thankgodtheracistignorantbastardisgone Helms former seat. Libby Dole...yes, Bob Dole's crazy wife is running against democrat Erskin Boles. Libby pretty much destroyed the Red Cross so I am hoping she dosen't win, however, I know so little about Boles I am afraid to go cast my ballet and vote for him...

I'm really pissed off about this Governor bullcrap. Both of the candidates, I would never, ever trust to keep Texas out of complete bankruptcy and disaster. These men are fools and have not said a single good thing about themselves, but only mudslinging about the other candidate. It has gone on forever, the same low-budget commercials over and over again.

Anyway, they made us do some idiotic vote where they probably threw all of the ballots away after we handed them back. I said, "Do I have to vote? I think they both suck and I don't want either of them to be Governor," and the teacher said, "Many people died to give you the right to vote, now speak your voice." The first thing that came to mind was, "I already spoke my voice, I said they both suck, idiot." I of course didn't say this to his face because he is a power-hungry freak and I would have gotten suspended.

Nor did I vote considering I am also 14. Well I didn't vote officially but we had a little vote at our school. And I voted for Adam Taff (republican) although their typ doesn't matter its the person themselves. Adam Taff was the only person who actually went into the community.

But yeah it was sad this year, alot of mud-slinging. Although Adam Taff didn't do that much, one of the reasons I voted for him.

I didn't vote. Even if I try to pay attention to the races here in Illinois, I have no idea what is true and what's not. The race for nearly every office up for election here has been nothing but negative commericals and arguing. I just didn't bother.

I am not old enough to vote yet (in 6 months, I will be 18), but if I were to vote I would have voted for Bill Simon for California Governor. Grey (Gray?) Davis is doing a terrible job, and I am still angry about the power crisis.

I vo-ted, I vo-ted ::does the cabbage patch:: First-time voter and happy to make my contribution! ^_^ Blame my Politcal Sciences teacher for my enthusiam, the woman is a nut and has rubbed off on me. Anyway, I voted almost straight-ticket Republican. I voted once, maybe twice, can't remember, for a Democrat, and then I opposed all the proposed amendments except for two. I just didn't agree with a lot of the politics than have been going on in Georgia. Especially the whole huge deal with Roy Barnes screwing up the public education system. That dude is definately not going to be in that governor's seat for much longer. Anyway, voting is important.... everyone who can should! ^_^

I would vote, if I was old enough. However, I don't like either candidate Alabama has in race for governer.

On the one hand: We have Don Siegalman(I KNOW I didn't spell that right). He's got good ideas. An education lottery, many education reforms, and just generally ways to help raise the bar in Alabama so that we can hold a financial candle to states like Georgia and Florida. But he's also had several scandals and other things since he was elected last; and he's a Democrat Liberal and I usually prefer Republican Conservative.

Then we have Bob Riley: I don't know much about him, save that he's much less scandalous when compared to the other guy.

It's a close race, but I imagine Seigalman(whatever) will pull it out. I'd personally vote for him just because I like the idea of an education lottery and a Hope scholarship fund.

Trans Nerve, I hate, well actually enjoy, telling you this, but gore really didnt get the popular vote.

After several recounts, all came back with bush leading.

More importantly a supreme court decision ended gore attempt to steal the election.

By the way, the supreme court has a 5-4 democrate majority.

There is a really intresting book out right now, I suggest you read it and learn what really happend.

Its written by an independant using left and right wing sources. Also his own experience from being there.

Its called "how gore tried to steal the election."

It lays it out in a long drawn out, detailed account of exactly what happend.

I dont mind if you want to be a democrate, but try not to be fooled by foolish boasting.

true democracy did prevail, and trickery did not.
If gore had won the popular vote, atleast one of the recounts would have had him in the lead.

Not one did, they all had bush leading.

I just find it rediculous that people even try that story.

I'm Canadian, so I wana stay mostly out of the whole American BS... cuz thats what politics in USA are... Pure crap.

Cuz thinking of it....

Bush won...

Everyone thought Gore had popular vote...

Somehow it was proven otherwise?

Also Gore tried cheating?

So now we think we have proof of Gore cheating...

Who knows...It could VERY WELL be BS as well...

...anyway...as George Carlin puts so well, he would rather sit at home and masturbate during the elections, so that way at least he gets somthing after 'F**king' himself. :)

really? gore won.

I dont think so.

If I was gonna tell someone to get over it, I would say it should be gore and the left.

They seem to be the ones with the problem.

I mean the supreme court. A democratic majority.

Dont bother. Its over, the democrates are clinging to a fleeting idea that gore had won the election.

Our system works, the supreme court was a democrate controled bench.

They could have kept gore in it and didnt, they made their choice on facts. Not the rebellious, conspiring ways of a hidden elite group of republicans.
