ADV FILMS ANNOUNCES LAUNCH OF THE ANIME NETWORK(tm) ON DIGITAL CABLE

FOR THE FIRST TIME, QUALITY ANIME PROGRAMMING TO BE AVAILABLE ON CABLE TELEVISION 24 HOURS A DAY

HOUSTON, November 6, 2002-ADV Films today announced publicly the creation of The Anime Network(tm), the first television channel in North America dedicated to anime (Japanese animation) and anime-related content. The Anime Network(tm) targets the nation's estimated 85 million cable television subscribers, and seeks to capitalize on cable's increasing dominance in the world of at-home entertainment.

Initially announced in June, 2002 at ADV Films' 10th Anniversary party in Tokyo, and announced in the U.S. at ADV's November 2 invitation-only 10th Anniversary party in Houston, the creation of The Anime Network(tm) has the industry abuzz with excitement and speculation.

"This has been in the works for some time," said ADV Films President, Founder and CEO John Ledford. "Until now, the market and the culture haven't been ready for it. But today ever-increasing numbers of Americans are becoming familiar with anime and its distinctive aesthetic; they're curious about anime, they're hungry for it, and The Anime Network(tm) is going to deliver it right to their televisions."

Competitive Advantage
While existing cable outlets have enjoyed strong ratings with limited blocks of anime and anime-inspired animated programming, The Anime Network(tm) will make fine anime programming available to viewers 24 hours a day.

"The Anime Network(tm) is the next logical step," said Ledford. "The television outlets that currently carry anime aren't meeting the potential demand; they offer very limited selections of titles, and only during very restricted hours. The Anime Network(tm) will change all of that, and we're excited to be leading the revolution."

Content
The Anime Network(tm) model is structured around four categorized content areas: Action Zone, Sci-Fi, Comedy Incorrect, and Horror/Martial Arts. These categories are designed to include virtually the entire spectrum of quality anime, while contextualizing content for new viewers unfamiliar with specific titles.

Coming Up
Coming soon, releases detailing geographic/service provider availability of The Anime Network,(tm) along with information about whom viewers can call regarding local availability; also, a sneak preview of programming that will be available in The Anime Network(tm)'s first months.

About ADV Films:
In 1992, ADV Films (ADV) began to forge the international market for Japanese animation ("anime") by combining unique titles, outstanding production values and efficient large-scale distribution. Today, ADV is the #1 producer-distributor of Japanese animation to the North American market, with the firm's holdings including such premier titles as "Spriggan", "Sailor Moon," "Samurai X," "Medabots," "Robotech," "Gasaraki" and "Neon Genesis Evangelion." ADV has also expanded into other forms of genre programming, including live-action science fiction programs "Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda" and "Farscape," and classic science fiction such as "Gamera: Guardian of the Universe." Headquartered in Houston, Texas, USA, with additional offices in the EU and Japan, and distribution on four continents, ADV is fast becoming an international entertainment powerhouse. So basically ADV is launching an all anime/Japan channel. I hadn't even heard of this before today, but it could be pretty cool if it actually gets some exposure. The only annoying thing would be that it might just be all ADV stuff, as this press release gives no indication otherwise.

They are the number one publisher of anime in the country, so who knows heh (they own more than I thought, as a few years ago it seemed all they put out was stuff with tons if nudity in it). According to that press release they own quite a few live action properties as well... I'm not sure if they will show these or not, but they mentioned them, and I figure stuff like Gamera would be kind of likely.

This is interesting to say the least. I would like to see what types of programming they have planned for network, Evangelion seems too mature for their possible target audience (children 9-15). In 2004 (2005?) Sailor Moon is no longer under an exclusive contract with Cartoon Network, so that could move to the new Anime network sometime.

If anyone, I'd think ADV knows that not only kids watch anime. Just based on some of the more weird stuff they localize alone... There is a lot of adult stuff mixed in there. I bet they'll probably section it off like CN does though... (with Adult Swim and all that).

Sounds great. I saw info about this on an other sight but not with detail. Who knows, maybe the dubbing wont be that bad. The might work on it.

Anime...twenty-four...hours...a day...*_*

HALELUYA!!!!!!!!!!!

With that being said, I'm VERY interested in knowing the channel number and premire date. I havn't really gotten a chance to see a good veriety of anime lately, so this is the best thing that could happen. I have, however, watched some of the previews on my Neon Genesis Evangelion DVDs for other ADV shows, and it looks very amazing to say the least. :)

Pass the word! Twenty-four hour anime! :D

EDIT: Most of you are complaining about bad dubs. Meh, the only bad dubs I see are the ones shown on Cartoon Network. The completely uncut and direct dubs I've gotten on DVD, like Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Trigun, and Evangelion are almost a perfect match, but without having to read all those subtitles, heh.

Sounds good to me. I don't like having to get out my DVDs and my PS2 just to watch some Anime. I'll be happy to watch it, even if it is dubbed. Lataz

Yeah, I know what you mean. My PS2 is clogged with Vice City. No DVD is going to get within a mile of that thing.

Heh. I usally keep my PS2 in the living room because we have alot of people that come over alot. So I'd have to set it up in my room to watch some. Parents usally take over the tv... I hope I can get the chan. It'd be awesome to a 24/7 anime chan. I wouldn't be on the comp. much though. Lataz

Duh! Man Greg...
Back on topic: If it is on television wouldn't that mean they'd have to edit the Anime? Ofcourse not as much as CN but still some. They might not even try to get some anime on there because of editing. Lataz

You'd think that wouldn't you? But actually this channel would not be public televivion, but would force you to pay extra to get it in the first place, and is exclusive to Digital Cable.

I dunno, I've been seeing some uncut anime on the Action channel, which is probably very similar to what the Anime channel will be like.

My only response to this is, "it's about freakin time!" Though I'm rather skeptical to have ADV films in charge of that channel based on the fact the majority of anime you'll probably be seeing is series wise since ADV really doesn't produce that many anime movies. I would expect to see a lot of Robotech, Princess Nine and maybe Nadesico.

Though its great to see an anime company finally steps up to bat in making a channel dedicated to anime.

Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop were pretty bad dubs in my opinion, not in terms of stuff being cut out, but on the voice acting itself

Asuka from Eva and Ed from CB's voices in the dubs send chills down my back, lol

heh, there really Is a god...

This will be a great change from the International channel's Anime programing (Dbz, Slayers ect.) which are all in japanese. I don't think hlaf of the shows would be so bad with dubbing, just as long as they keep it the hell away from editors.
Yeah, well, the anime is already made, lol. It is totally uncut, and we're hoping they'll keep it so for TV.

And Seph, I do agree that sometimes dub voices are bad, especially when you hear buu subbed, and then dubbed.

I don't know about Evangelion (I have only seen a few episodes subbed) but I have seen teh subbed and dubbed versions of Cb and I must say they are both great. Ed's voice is better in the dub. Of course that it just my opinion.

We spoke with ADV Films marketing director Ken Wiatrik today to get answers about the Anime Network, and while the company is being pretty tight lipped, we did get a few details.

While previous reports have been that the channel would probably be a pay channel and not basic cable, Wiatrik's feeling were different, "I don't know, but I would hope it would be basic cable. The purpose of this channel will be to expose people to programs and genres that they have not already been exposed to in the past."

What about the programming? Well, ADV's press release merely states "The Anime Network(tm) model is structured around four categorized content areas: Action Zone, Sci-Fi, Comedy Incorrect, and Horror/Martial Arts. These categories are designed to include virtually the entire spectrum of quality anime, while contextualizing content for new viewers unfamiliar with specific titles."

While Wiatrik wouldn't talk about non-ADV shows he did say that not all ADV shows would appear on the Anime Network, but they are looking at airing the following shows: Gunsmith Cats, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Getter Robo, Gasaraki and RahXephon. In fact, RahXephon will probably air on the Anime Network before it is released on DVD. "We will be premiering programs that have no shown in the past. RahXephon will be hopefully premiered on the Anime Network."

And yes, the above logo is the current official working logo for the Anime Network.
Well other than the shows... The logo is weird. It reminds me more of some Hanna Barbara crap than anything anime (barring maybe stuff like Astro Boy).
