Gavin
Well I used to study Judo but an accident at the club caused me to leave, I am now about to take up Karate and am wondering to many other study martial arts and why. I took up martial arts because I am fascinated by them
Sui Generis
I did study Karate for a while. But that ended when I was kicked out for messing up a kids knee. That was a bunch of BS but I don't think I'll go into that story, now atleast. From there I went to Tae Kwan Do and studied that for about a year, then my sensai moved, and I tried going to a different sensai but it wasn't the same. So I was forced to quit. So no I don't practice with any sensai or teacher I just practice what I already know and make up combinations and such in my room. I also practice with a sword OCCASIONALLY. I started studying martial arts for the stupidest reason: I though it looked cool on TV. But from that reason it turned into a passion. I personally love martial arts. THe beauty and deadliness of it all is very rare indeed.

Kent
Well, I dont take matial arts, but its with two good reasons. 1. I dont need some idiot kid tearing my body up when the instructor tells us to go and practice some grapple and I end up with that idiot trying to prove something. 2. I dont like the fact that every ma place around is teaching just to make money. Maybe if I could find the perfect dojo and start with a good style and teacher, then I would follow up on my love for martial arts. Otherwise, count me out. I would rather train at home and learn little things here and there. Plus, learning a "style" doesnt really appeal to me, I would rather learn to defend and fight with no pre-concieved notions of how to do either. That or just learn how to do this stuff through the military. I dont know, but for now, Im sticking to my little picture books called "bruce lees fighting method" one in particular that is really great. "self defense", he goes through all sorts of situations and its a really simple book, I suggest you check this one out in the book stores and see what you think. The others are only ok, but not nearly as good. oh yea, I think there have been threads on this before, but I wouldnt sweat it.

Spikey
I used to take karate! My best tournamment I came in second. But that didn't last long at all. I think I made it up to a black tip. Before I even started I didn't even know they had tips. But I think I was like 6 or 7 then. SO it was like 2 or 3 years ago. I think I won for second by doing like a sweep but he was so tall that it didn't even make him budge. So then he punched me in then nose. Afterwards I just used all my might and kicked him flat in the face, and knocked him out. Then I had to face the guy that had came in first. I hit him in the face, he kicked me, I kicked him, he sweeped me. 1...2...3 KO! I'm still made about it to today.
Sui Generis
Nice job Spikey! I'm proud to say I was top class. (might as well tell the story why I was kikced outta Karate) I was the 2 year holder of the sparring championship in our tournements. Un-fortunatly the year this happened before the tournement I hurt my back in a soccer incident, and was just getting over it. So anyway I after a couple spars I was getting really sore but decided to go on. I finally made it to the Top 8. So then I faced Cavanaugh Blaze. He was pissed last year because I beat him in the final fight and he knew that I hurt my back. So at first I was doing alright and scored the first point. We went back to our corners and then came back to fight. Then right off the bat he did a round house kick and hit me in the stomach this knocked me off balance and he did a side kick but hit me in the back. (Which re-injured it) He then elbowed me in the back. He was laughing and so I knew he ment to do this on purpose. The refs hadn't given him the point yet so I tried to continue fighting. On my knee I clasped my hands together and swung them at him. The blow hit him in the knee, this blow hurt his knee badly. (Possibly breaking it) So I was kicked out. Then in Tae Kwan Do I was the champion both years I went.

conpiracymonki
I started taking Kung Fu and chinese boxing at a really good place near our area a few months back. But I have yet to get a belt, because I seem to have bad family or school timings, and so rarely go now. But I should be going again after Ramadaan.
Kinetic
I took Tae Kwon Do for a few years and got my black belt (oh my gosh!) but it seriously taught me nothing. If I got into a fight with someone, I'm not going to use all of the moves that they taught me because you can only use them in certain situations. I would much rather fight normally and get smeared across the floor instead of making a fool of myself, getting laughed at and then getting smeared across the floor. I don't know how the other institutes have taught all of you, but I know that mine didn't help me at all. My mom says, "Well, it gave you self-confidence," but I could have gained that any other way. If I take up any style of fighting, it will probably be fencing.
PiroMunkie
I took one session of Judo a long time ago back when I was in second or third grade. I did not continue after that. I did not enjoy how difficult the test was. We were children and they expected us to know the proper names for every move that was there and the history of Judo. I just mostly improvise when I fight with a so-called "martial arts style".

Marron347
i took goju ryu karate for like eight months or so. i started because (a)i thought Martial Arts looked pretty cool on tv, like dbz and stuff (b)i needed to be involved in something new and something other than school so that i could meet new people (c)i had always heard about Martial Arts being so good for the soul, helping you not only physically but mentally too and i wanted to know what that really felt like. i wanted to truly understand. (d)i really needed the exercise when i first began, i was a little intimidated because there were no other girls in my class, but other than that i really did fit in. as time progressed more people started to join and there were more girls so i was more comfortable with that. and as i learned, i began to get this feeling of peace and tranquility that i had heard about and i worked toward becoming stronger and faster and better. i wanted to be a good fighter. but then a bad thing happened: I started to hear about money problems from my parents. my dad had quit his job and there was less and less money coming in. i had to sacrifice a lot to keep taking classes, but in the end it didn't even matter because i ended up not going anymore since my dad wouldn't get a job. i always think about it. when i stopped going it was like there was a hole in my heart, but, then again, there's lots of holes in my heart, so i got used to it.i learned alot when i was taking karate, but i can never find the time to practice anymore...sometimes i'm afraid i'm going to forget. Solo Tremaine
I'm not sure if fencing can be counted as a martial art, but I've been doing that for the last seven years. I was interested in taking up a 'proper' martial art in order to help gain more focus when fencing, and also because I quite like the sound of it. A friend of mine does Akido, but I've never asked about it. Which would you guys reccomend as being the best to start on?
Genkai
Aikido is really good, it deals with size(and how it doesnt matter) and how you use the force your opponent is already using against them... If that's what your looking for.. I fence, i dunnpo if martial arts has made me better, ive been doing martial arts for longer..*shrugs*
Kent
I think martial arts are awesome, Im not even gonna get into anything I know, but I gotta say... Their not very usefull if your not a really good "martial artist." I think alot of people taking, Oh say, tae kwan do, are gonna be in for a rude awakening when the first thing that happens to them in that horrible situation of a street fight is a punch straight to the face and a kick to the nuts. What Im trying to say is that sometimes the martial arts americas train in act as a false sense of security rather than an honestly defensive technique. Although I also must say that if applied properly, the arts can be very useful. I personally think jeet kun do would be the best, but not for every one, and that includes myself. I think its just a good idea in that, it supports an idea of no style. That would be the best style.
Carren Heart
I have studied Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi, and Dragon (a defensive form of martial artist that commonly teaches great leg blocks) for some thing now I had a private mentor in Dragon, which is a very cool martial arts style I've been it about four tournament in which only won one of them (the others I didn't do to badly but I also didn't do that good.) I personally studied martial artist for the discipline and ability to defend my self. but its been about three years since any of this, i think i'll get back into it though.
