I think that Knives is a great character, and a great villian. His pride really helps to shape his character, reminding me much of Vegeta. As Vegeta, Knives despises the human race, and concludes that his own race is the most superior in the galexy. Backing his words up is Knives's power and taste for blood, shown in Episode 17: Rem Saverem. He also has that mysterious and badass aura about him, reminding me of Vicious from Cowboy Bebop. For this, he is one of my favorite character in all of Trigun.

I believe that you are trying to ask...what he is? Well, believe it or not, Knives is a...

**SPOILER**

[...genetically engineered plant. Using the basis of a human in the creation, scientists aboard the "Project Seeds" colony ship mixed the DNA with that of plants. This way, they created a species that would not only grow quickly, but would live for a VERY long time, and would have great strength. Adam's section of Trigun on theOtaku.com shows you very specific details that conclude that this is true. But even if you didn't come to the conclusion that he was literally a plant, you may have thought that he represents a plant figuratively as well. If you saw Episode 17, then you must be able to remember the dicussion about plants that Knives had with Vash, about their strength and their superiority to humans by using all of their evergy not to talk, but to grow. This acounts for similarities of when Knives takes out both angel arms in the last episode, growing his arms like that of plants with huge leaves. There are many clues in the series, but some refuse to believe what Knives really is: a plant.]

As for the phsychopathic side of Knives, I find that to be encredibly cool. To take control of someone with your own mind is something that every kid wishes to do, but to watch someone actually do it is very intruiging and further motivates my conclusion of his badass side.

Knives is one very cool character, and is one of my favorites.

I'd have to say yes and no to that. True, Elgato used his phsychopathic skills to harm a lot more innocents than Knives, but Knives had much more of a taste for blood. While Elgato was taking his prey one at a time, Knives was able to destroy entire towns in seconds, and was also planning to destroy the entire human race and live in peace with his brother and only other being he cared for, Vash.

Well, considering he is Vash's brother, I'm not quite sure why you'd put that in quotation marks, but I'll try to answer what he symbolizes as one. But first, is this a trick question? Are you actually looking for a specific answer? lol

I suppose that he symbolizes what an ideal brother would be. He saves Vash's life, looks out for him, and wants nothing but the best for him. Vash is the only one he trusts or cares for, and this is very clear in the series, as when they travel together after crash landing on the planet, or when he intentionally saves Vash's life, alone, on the ship accident. Even in the last episode, it's Vash that comes to him looking for a fight that Knives has deserted his whole life, rather than Knives wanting to kill him.

He's always loved Vash; it's his hatred for humanity that brings out the evil in him.

Well, that's my take on it, but I'm interested to hear your views as well. :)

why did i put it in qoutation marks? i know not..... it was not late enough for me to be coherent....0_0

anyway, that's what i was thinking, that knives is as close to an island as any man could be, but that he is not. His hatred for humanity shows as well as his care of Vash, but he is so messed up (butterfly.......), which makes the situation ...akward yet..........i dunno...

if i did, i wouldnt have started this thread ^_-

o_O What was that? Do you mind putting a little more though into your posts? Lol, just kind of hard to understand. First we're talking about Knives, now an island? Where did that come from? And what the heck did the butterfly have to do with anything?!

Huge spoilers here. Just to let you know. Series and Trigun Maximum Refrences here.

Hello, I'm the reincarnate of Knives. Seriously.
We share pretty much all the same personality traits, I'm getting my hair done like his (I'll have to bleach it a little), I'm the biggest bad *** gunsliger on the planet, and I'm working on the psycic thing. I pretty much consider him a part of me, so I'm going to speak in the 1st person throughout the thread. But anyway, I always wanted the best for my brother Vash. The only problem is we are two completly different people. I'll make him see my side of things one day, you'll see. Understand, there was only supposed to be one of us when we were created, but as we are plants, when you split a plant, it finds a way to create two different plants out of the halfs. So we were divided, in short, into a smart and evil one (me), and a dumb and good one (Vash). By the way, I'm looking for experianced hit men/women to fill the ranks of some of the lost gung-ho guns members. Pay sucks, but I'll spare you when I destroy humanity. As for Transtic Nerve, I'm really flattered 'bout that. But I'm not british, (you apperantly like them because it's on your sig) I am 100% plant hoplessly divided into a 50% and regenerated back into a 100%. As for Legato Bluesummers, he's a cool villan too, hell, that's why he's my (quote) *****. (unquote) I prefer calling him my second in command, as that's kinda degrating of him. If he was ever deservative of being degrated, it was when he suggested that I killed Vash. I was so infuriated, I folded him in half. He lived, only to sacrifice himself for me. He's my zelot, he'll do anything for my cause. As for being a psychopath, if you could understand the every thought of every person in a 10 mile radius since my birth, you'd go nuts too. Same deal with Legato.
I'll leave you with something my friend Sarah used to say:
"Villans arn't bad guys, they're just misunderstood people who need a hug." Her parents are looking into shrinks. I hope I clarified a few things.

That was...interesting. I'm glad to see your dedication in Knives! Oh, and the butterfly thing, I just remembered, hehe. Knives would kill the spider to save the butterfly, as Vash would try and save both. Through this comparision, we can differ Vash from Knives.

Bah, I can't believe I forgot about the butterfly. :bluesweat

*agrees with TN*

Knives is dreamy.

Personally, I love to hate him for what he's done. However, I can't help but pity him. He loves his brother so much but can't see what Vash sees. His hatred for humanity and his intense love for his brother is EXTREMELY disturbing in my mind. IN a way, he csares the cripes out out me. ><
