with some of the newer cartoons manyy of the original acme hour gags are just being redone. however, these still seem to make me laugh, so...... But I tend to lean more to the cartoons such as Samurai Jack and batman than rugrats or spongebob anyday, thank you very much lol.

When my little brother was in the hospital, my mom had to right down what time Sponge Bob was on. There is a lot of stupidity in it, but you gotta admit, it is down right funny. I can't watch that show with out laughing 1. But still... Now Barney is plain iddiotic. That big fat pink Dinousor hopping and singing. That should of been cut of the air years, and years ago.

Things like Spongebob Squarepants and Rugrats are not only a mega slice of tedium, in my opinion - they are also an abomination to the beautiful art of animation. If I wanted to watch something grossly based on toilet humour, I'd be getting myself a job in - well, you get the idea [lots of poles, thongs, etc.].

The problem is, no one really values this brilliant art form which has only ever been made 'worth it' by the old Looney Tunes and Disney shorts. Oh, and a couple of well-done, all-ages-audience movies [eg. The Lion King, Shrek...] The fact is, our sense of humour has declined, apparently, to a toilet brush and a pair of underwear - DOES NOBODY ELSE FIND THAT HIDEOUS?!

Sorry to play my own tune here, but I'm working on two cartoon series (one for kids, one for adults and teens) right now and when I just look back at my sketches and scripts, I could hug myself. Quite honestly, some businesses like Nickeolodeon (or however you spell it) need a new slice of animators and concept-creators with steady minds and a knowledge of what should be done to honour Walt Disney and Chuck Jones (God rest his soul). Oh, and it's not just me - I know lots of other promising creators...

Rugrats isn't really all gross-out humor. I admit there is a lot of it in there, but Rugrats is, for the most part, just a look at teh world from the eyes of babies. They don't know any better so they sometimes do stuff such as eat worms and belly buttons lint, but its all a part of the story, apart of watching these kids grow up and learn more about the world around them.

Ren and Stimpy was disgusting, which makes you wonder why it was Nickelodeon in the first place seeing as to how it was a more adult show and Nick is designed for kids. Cow and Chicken may not have been as bad but was disgusting. I don't care for cartoons that focus entirely on gross-out humor to entertain their target audience.

To tell you the truth, very few animated series, especially those of today, will ever compare to the old Disney, Looney Tunes and Hanna Barbara cartoons. Sure most of them had flat 1-Dimensional characters and repetitive storylines *coughScooby Doocough* but even then there are hundreds of people worldwide who loved and grew up with these shows so if anything, there is the nostalgia factor.

Well, I'll admit that today's cartoons don't come close to some of the classics...

But good animation has always been held exclusively to full length movies and such. How can you look at Goofy learning how to drive a car and turn around and say "Well that animation is just as good as Disney's Snow White"? When it comes to shorts and animated series, the animation will probably never be done with as much effort as a a full movie. That would mean spending millions on millions of dollars each year to animate an entire television series, with the income of that series based purely on the sponsers and the ratings. I don't think anybody does that with traditionally animated series'. Watch "House of Mouse" and any recent Disney movie. No one puts as much effort into animating a television series as they do a movie; not even Disney.

When it comes to plots and storylines and humor... that's another thing. No doubt humor has changed, but WB makes a habit of always doing the same type of humor as the original Looney Tunes. Watch a rerun of Animaniacs and look at the mixture of modern slap-stick and political humor. Original WB cartoons always have some kind of adult humor in them, just like the older Looney Tunes.

I'm not defending really bad animation and toilet humor (just the thought of Ren & Stimpy makes me feel like vomiting), but there are a few good cartoons out there.

Personally, I wouldn't start to worry about the supposed downward spiral of cartoon humor until nobody I know laughs at anything made before 1980.

I personally don't want to be metally stimulated every time I watch TV. Sometimes you just want to see something stupid that just exists to make you laugh. Spongebob and some of these other cartoons do this for me. The show is supposed to be ridiculous... It's about a talking sponge, what can you expect?

I can just imagine some people sitting there straight faced and acting all serious trying to prove to themselves that cartoons are stupid. Just try to enjoy them, it's not that horrible.

Some of those cartoons are quite cool, like Semjaza said, sometimes you don't want to watch something that stimulates your intellect, you just want to sit and have a laugh. All the great looney tunes classics do it, as well as the modern ones like Spongebob, and Courage the cowardly dog. and Veggietales, they are a great tool to communicate the bible to our younger church members (we have a heap in our video library) We don't have the Jonah one though, be funny if they did a revelation one and managed to kept it PG :p

Well, I must add that VeggieTales are fun. They are cute, and as stated before, religious people find them useful. If you like something cute and funny, the 'Sing Alongs' are great. The only problem with them is that the songs are extremely catchy. But what can you do, they are for kids.
