Well this is up in the air depending on people's taste.

RPG wise, I think the only amazing game on the system is Suikoden III. FFX is good as well, but not at Suikoden's level at all in my opinion.

Other RPGs would be:

Wild Arms 3 - I liked it for a few hours, then it got too repetivitive. some of the characters are decent... but otherwise kind of eh. Worth a rent though.

Okage - Really quirky, with a pretty boring battle system... But still kind of enjoyable. It's worth the 10 bucks you'll see it on clearance for. It's got a nice Tim Burton style to it, which is what sold me on it.

Shadow Hearts - Totally average RPG. The game is nothing special, and some of the graphics are horrible.

Grandia X - This is a pure dungeon crawler, get it only if you love dungeons and like fighting for hours and hours.

Grandia II - I liked this game... But the DC version is far better. If you don't have a choice, it may be worth the money for you. It's pretty much agreed that this is a bad port though.

Shadow of Destiny - I think this is the name... It's more of a traditional story book type game than an RPG. It's still pretty cool, but short enough that I'd leave it at a rental if you can even find it.

There are other RPGs on the system, most of which you might as well just avoid.

Fighting wise...

Capcom Vs SNK 2 - Great game, I think it's worth getting. I personally have this imported on DC, and I haven't played the PS2 version... But I hear they aren't much different.

Tekken 4 - Everyone here seems to love it, but I'm not a fan of Tekken at all.

Virtua Fighter 4 - This is Greatest Hits now for $20 bucks... If you buy any 3D fighter, get this one. It's not obvious how good it is until you spend a lot of time with it.

Bloody Roar 3 - There is a much better version available on GC if you can get it. Either way, I don't feel it's anything special. It's fun to waste a few hours on though.

Guilty Gear X - Again, I imported this for DC... But I love it. It's more style than substance, but the game is gorgeous. Guilty Gear has brought enough to the table that it's worth checking out.

There are some other random ones I forget... Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 should be worth it once it hits.

Other games I think you should check out would be Ico (great game) and Devil May Cry (not a fan, but a lot of people like it). You should see what's in the Greatest Hits section as well.

Hope that helps some lol.

Tekken Tag, Capcom Vs. SNK 2, and Virtua Fighter 4 are the fighting games in my small PS2 collection and they're all great games with their own style.

And for the RPG department, Final Fantasy 10, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, and Kingom Hearts are the only ones I have and they're worth the money to get.

Well, maybe you should test out some of these games at a local video game store to see if they suite your tastes.

I dont like RPG games, but I can tell you a few fighting games you should khop....

Tekken 4 (definetly recommend)
Tekken Tag (old, but still hot)
Virtual Fighter 4 (havent played it, but I heard its nice)
Any of the Street Fighter EX series (My personal favorite is the first one, but its on PSX{PS1})
Dragonball Z Budokai(it hasnt been released yet{supposed to be released in December}, but it looks like its gonna be HOT!)

Now if you're into wrestling games, I recommend Smackdown 4: Shut Your Mouth and any of the UFC games.

I reccommend, on the RPG side, Final Fantasy X. Great storyline, dependable series, and great advantage even over FFIX. I have it, and it is challening, but indeed a very good buy. Another RPG is Kingdom Heart which I hear is supposed to be a very good game, but the difficulty level is high.

On the fighting side, it's Virtua Fighter 4 all the way. I got it a few weeks after it cam,e out and I am VERY impressed. The modes are great and original, epecially Kumite. Man, I need to start playing it again. I used to think that Tekken 4 would match it, but I was disapointed when it was released, and it deffinitly didn't stand up to it's predecessors, much less Virtua Fighter 4.

Once again:
RPG -- Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts
Fighting -- Virtua Fighter 4

If you want a really good game. Worth your money...get Kingdom Hearts. It's battle system though is not like the FF's. It is still a very good game. The theme song...oh my gosh. I love the theme song.

As for fighting
I think you should get Blody Roar 3. The game is really hard, but really good. The games story line is good. I like it.

Also for fighting, you should RENT the Bouncer. Don't buy it...only because you can beat it in 1 day. I did atleast. The game is pretty good. Every time you go into a battle you get to choose 1 of 3 different charcters. But if your going to get it, I better not tell you anymore.

I agree that Suikoden III is the top choice if you're a fan of role-playing games. Even for those of you who are a bit wary of the genre should give the game a try, because it's one of the finest purchases you can make for the Playstation 2.

I know that sounds like a poor commercial, but there are huge branching points that make the game worth playing again, and as with the other Suikoden games, the large assortment of characters are a tremendous asset to the game. This time, however, you actually need to utilize more of them.

If I had to choose between this and Final Fantasy X, I would choose this game because there is more game for your dollar.

You could also think about getting Kingdom Hearts if you already haven't. It's not the best role-playing game out there, but it's probably the best action rpg on the PS2. It's not very long though, and some of the world designs are kind of uninspired. The production values are through the roof, however, and most of the Disney characters animate and sound like their cartoon counterparts. Very impressive.

Plus, the game has a wealth of secrets.

As far as fighters go, I wouldn't recommend Tekken 4. It's worth a rental at best. If you have Tekken Tag, there's no need to invest in Tekken 4.

Instead, you might want to check out Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. I know it's out for GameCube, so it should be out for PS2. If not, it'll release in plenty of time for Christmas.

The reviews seem pretty positive right now. If you don't have Virtua Fighter 4, it might be worth picking up, if you want a 3-D fighter.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is one of my favorite 2-D fighters for the sheer amount of game you get. It contains every character from the versus series and a few extras, such as Jill Valentine from Resident Evil. If you don't have it for DreamCast, don't hesitate to get it. You'll never regret that one.

I woulnt mention anything people have already mentioned.

so...

If would ever be intrested in a flight sim/ arcade style piloting game.

I would give Ace Combat 4 a try. Its the best piloting game out there.

I would also suggest good old tony pro skater 4. Highest level of thps yet. But Im sure it will be no time before they release number 5.

I will say that although the tekken games are great, if your not a die hard fan, but something else. I rented tekken 4 and beat it with every player during that one rental. Its just not all that great unless you have dozens and dozens of friends to challenge you.

I hear lord of the rings 2 towers is awesome. I may get it.

And dynasty warriors 3 is supposed to be awesome.

I would suggest socom: navy seals, but the game, although really awesome for the genre, is just lacking in its perception of realism and overall playability. Its fun and if you want to play a good game on a broad band internet connection, its a great team shooter. But for the single player, its only so good. I own it, but sorta wish I didnt, or just wish I could beat it on this new difficulty... anyways.

I also suggest splinter cell or metal gear solid substance. They both look to be great covert action games.

Good luck on your quest. I know finding the right game is really hard but the really important piece of advice I could give at this point is one thing.

Rent first.

About Suikoden III, I've seen the graphics and they are pretty good by my standards. But whats the storyline. I mean killing stuff is good and all but a good storyline is what makes a game great. Thats why I dont want to get Kingdom Hearts because besides the fact that all the characters in the game SUCK!, I thought that the storyline was weak. Games like that pale in comparison with classics like zelda and breath of fire. so i've also heard that dead or alive (three or two, im not sure) is a good game. is it?

DOA2: Hardcore is the one on PS2... In my opinion DOA is a very shallow fighting series, and not really deserving of the recognition it has. I'd say VF4 is a better bet for a 3D fighter. I'd grab DOA if I saw it for like 9 bucks new on clearance though lol.

I also disliked Kingdom Hearts... I kept coming up with excuses for myself about why I didn't like the game... But in the end I just realized that I didn't think it was any fun and that Square was ruining some of my favorite movies. I was almost at the end when I realized this completely, and I haven't played since.

As for Suikoden III... It's the best RPG on the system hands down. If you think BoF is great, then you'll like this game. Good graphics, gameplay and characters... as well as a good story told from the perspective of three different characters. To me, for anyone that likes RPGs, this is a must own... no questions asked.

Actually, you get to see it from a few more perspectives later on. :)

The basic storyline involves conflict between the Grasslands, Zexen Federation and the Harmonian army. The three starting characters represent the Karaya Clan (a Grassland territory), the Zexens, and a mercenary group. It's incredibly deep and rewarding seeing the story play out in three different ways and filling in the story holes with different characters.

In a nutshell, there was a war fifty years in the past, where a Grassland hero known as The Flame Champion helped lead the Grasslands to a stalemate in the war with Harmonia. The result was a fifty year treaty.

When you start, you hear rumors about the Flame Champion and eventually attempt to seek him out, even though by the laws of nature, he should be very old or dead.

I've basically revealed a very basic outline of the story. Throw in death, romance and drama typical of the Suikdoen series, and you've got a script that rivals or surpasses Final Fantasy X's.

Whoa I had better try out Suikdoen. It sounds like my kind of game.

Anyway, my Two Cents:

FIrst if you have broadband, and like shooters get yourself a network adapter and SOCOM. Can't go wrong with playing actual people than a CPU.

RPG
Grandia 2 is good, but as it was mentioned, the DC verison is better. (GFX wise and load times)

Final Fantasy X was ok. I liked it at first but got bored and stopped playing. I never got around beating it.

Flight
Ace Combat 4. Nuff said.

Racing
Gran Turismo 3. This IS the best racing game out there. You won't go wrong with this.

Burnout. I hear this is good too but I never played it.

Combat
Capcom VS SNK 2 is fun. I suck at fighting games but its all good.

Marvel VS Capcom 2 is great. Definiately for the kind of guys wanting to pull off 10 hit combos mid air and fight at quick speeds.

Action
Devil May Cry is cool. This is really good with all that cool moves you can pull on the enemies. Only gripe is that it ended too soon. But Devil May Cry 2 is coming out soon so and its way better.

Armored Core 2:Another Age or 3. If you like mechs get either or both. AC3 is a bit more realistic but if you're more toward like building the ultimate mech AC2:AA is for you.

Metal Gear Solid 2. Hey its the sequel to the best PSX game and its just damn good. I'll wait for the Substance verison though since it comes with more goodies.

I gotta say that the way zero listed recommended games was awesome. good job, zero.

I would in that case I would like to iterate the game Socom: navy seals.

For me its hard like no other, but if you can deal with socom, it's the best "modern tactical combat" game.

I did notice that the thread mentioned fighting and whatnot but I just thought I would say my personal recomendation.

the game im actually waiting for is Breath of Fire V. Im an avid fan of the Breath of Fire saga, so when I heard the fifth one comes out in America in late January. I knew I had to get a PS2. BOF5 and Suikoden III are supposedly the best RPG games out there so I'm gonna get those. Most of the other games I've never heard of, or I heard they sucked.

Personally I would suggest at least getting Metal Gear Solid 2, FFX, Capcom vs SNK 2, DOA, there is another street fighter game but I'm not quit sure of the name of it. It is like EX 3 or something. Although I have yet to play it, I've heard that the new Mortal Kombat is awsome.

Hmm, I don't see much of a reason to own both of the Metal Gear Solid 2 games. Especially since the latter is somewhat of an expansion pack.

Oh, and please watch your post quality Solidus_6, it's a bit difficult to understand what you're saying. Improvement in your spacing and capitalizaion would be much appreciated.
