I personally think that they are trying to get more money. I mean Christmas is the highest grossing holiday, they prolly figure the earlier the start the more they get.

(They being stores and such)
Thats the same thing I thought they might be doing those swindlers

Swindlers? Please.

Christmas is a major retail holiday. Why? Because people buy things.

Stores make big deals and promotions about Christmas. Why? Because people buy things.

Seasonal items are being set out earlier and earlier. Why? Because people buy things.

They aren't going to continue to do something that doesn't make them a profit. If the public will buy Christmas stuff in early November, then by gosh, the public is going to have every opportunity for it!

So perhaps the idea here is not merely disgust at stores ["They're trying to make money! Good gosh! It's as tho' that's how they stay in business or something!"], but that enough people buy into it for the whole thing to become an issue.

I agree with Sara.

Honestly, yes it is sad that holidays are nothing but a way to make money to some people... I don't think that's an issue in terms of this stuff though.

Nevertheless, people buy presents for others for Christmas. Advertising for seasonal items and putting stuff out ensures more sales. It also appeals to the people that would rather be prepared for Christmas NOW instead of a week before the 25th (or even the day before in some cases lol).

Same thing every holiday where money is to be made. Costumes are out a month ahead of time at least for Halloween. I find that if you want a costume anytime close to Halloween yuo are just out of luck. It's how things are.

I don't think being prepared and ready to sell stuff any earlier makes them any more of a "swindler."

I figure people could always boycott Christmas shipping if they dislike it lol.

I'll put it this way, Christmas has become nothing more then a field day for marketing and sales. Thanksgiving unfortuantely is under-minded because of the greed that lies within all of us.

Thanksgiving to people now is nothing more then "another holiday" that brings us closer to Christmas and anything that brings us closer to a present giving day is better then giving thanks for what we have already.

It's sad but most holidays in paticular Christmas and Thanksgiving have lost their true meanings.

CHristmas....it's spelled with a "h". All Christmas is is marketing. And X-mas stuff is already out because the day after Thanksgiving is the biggest shopping day of the year.

I don't believe that Christmas has lost its meaning whatsoever. If anything, I think Christmas has always had a lot of meaning.

Even if you don't celebrate the religious aspects, most people still recognize Christmas as a time of giving, sharing and kindness to others. Sure it's become commercialized...but everything is commercialized nowdays, even the Church itself. So yeah, I don't think people have forgotten what it's about at all. It's just that perhaps all the marketing and hype has become too loud to avoid noticing it.

*thumbs up*

And also, the owners of these companies don't necessarily see Christmas as just "money making season", they could celebrate it as it was originally intended, for all we know. As you said, it's more down to the public's demand for things to buy, than the company's decision to sell those things.

Ultimately, people decide to buy things. It's this thing called "the right to freedom" that peole love so much ;)

That all depends who you ask. I don't celebrate Thanksgiving anyway.. I don't even really understand the whole meaning of that, mostly because I'm not American, but also because we don't really get taught a great deal about American holidays and such here...

On the other hand.. Christmas still retains it's original meaning, as it always has. The fact that a large number of people don't actually celebrate it for that reason is besides the point. If I tell you something and you don't understand, and then you go and tell everyone the misunderstood version, my original statement doesn't lose it's meaning, rather, you misinterpreted it.

Christmas still means the same as it always did, it's just been misinterpreted along the way..

I don't like the way they have commercialized the holiday, but I do like how it seems to come earlier each year. Christmas is my favorite holiday, even without the presents, because I love the harmony and the way the air feels this time of the year. Yet I don't want it to come any sooner than it already has.

As for me, I see it as a time to be thankful since i hate thanksgiving, you end up eating turkey for like 2 months after you have it.
Hahah.. I thought I was the only one that hated it for that reason. It's nice seeing your family and all (depending), but all the food there drives me nuts.

Even after all the giftbuying aspects of Christmas, you wind up being with your family anyway. Everyone I know buys presents for people they care about, and everyone meets at someplace and we get to see eachother again after a long time. I figure there's nothing wrong with that.

I love christmas! Its such a great time for sharing Jesus! and to get great gifts, as well as send 'em out.

However, my family think tis the season to have a good old family feud :(

like in 1995, when I was a kid, me and my sister went up to New Plymouth for a holiday, our cousins live up there, and when they refused to play with us, the olds got all uptigh at each other, us kids moved on, but the olds kept up their grudge, it lasted for about five years! gimme a break!

alas, the feud virus struck again last year, as "good christians" our family say they are, it's not about present's it's the birth of our saviour right? no! they have a jolly good fight about who should have got people who, which ended with nana in tears, and the knives drawn again :sigh it made me so angry, 1 year on, this feud about such a petty thing still stands, however, i just stand back this year, and let them have thier petty squabbles, I'll have nothing to do with it
