Anime Conventions

Here in Florida, I haven't seen many anime conventions. There was on in Atlanta, Georgia in August but I haven't heard about any others. I was on a website called otakuworld, and saw that they had lists of many anime conventions that were in the United States. Has anybody been to these conventions? All I know is that many people who go to these conventions dress as characters. What are these conventions like?

I've been to a sci-fi convention... But that was like over 10 years ago. Pretty weird experience. I bought a bunch of Star Wars models, all of which seemed to be missing a piece.

Anyway, I'm sure there has to be a few. Whenever I go to Orlando, my grandpa and I always stop by all these huge comic/anime/whatever stores that seem to be everywhere down there. I'd figure someone there would know... Around here people basically just keep track of what Rosemont Expo Center has going on, or some hotel... That's where most of them happen here in Chicago.

To all the ones on the list, I'm a very faithful Anime Convention fan. I visit almost all the Anime Conventions that are hosted around the USA. Probably the best this year was the Anime Expo in NYC which I didn't have to travel much for and the one in Alanta. As for people dressing up as Anime Characters that's called cosplay and I hate that aspect of Anime Conventions it sort or ruins the reputation of being and anime fan. Also I find it way to degrading to do that.

Also a major plus that comes about from these conventions is the merchandise sold at them. You can get various anime model kits, dvds, vhs, and cds for less than even the wholesale price.

For example at the Big Apple Animefest and Anime Expo a macross figure that can run you a good $30 in an import shop are sold for 5 dollars each. It's a really great event for fans that want to get cheap anime merchandise!

Do you have any other questions about Anime Conventions?

There are 3 big conventions dealing with anime in Orlando...

Megacon (which is not just anime, but naything Sci-Fi related)
Jacon
AFO (Anime Festival Orlando)

Megacon will be held February 28th to March 2nd at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL. http://www.megaconvention.com

Jacon will be held May 30th to June 1st at the UCF Student Union located at the University of Central Florida. (5 minutes from my house!) http://www.jacon.org

AFO 4 will be held probably Mid August. Oficial Dates have not been set. It's usually held in Kissimee, FL which is right outside Orlando (technically still is) Go to http://www.anime.jyu.fi/~fleggett/afo/ for details as they come and see pictures from last years... err this years con

I go to Megacon every year, this will be my third coming up. I wll be cosplaying Shindo Shuichi from GRAVITATION if anyone cares. I'l also be attending Jacon, 3rd time as well, and maybe AFO 4, since they did some neat stuff last year. Perhps I'll see some one there. There's a big one in Miami this coming year that wll be featuring Korean Visual Rock Band.... uhh... forgot their name... Silver Ash I think?... But they will be preforming. So if anyone lives close to Miami, Ft Lauderdale area, gooooooooo..... Support anime, j-rock even if it's by Koreans, and everythiiiiiinnnng. Hope that information helps.

I would love to go to one. It's not like I can just fly around the U.S. to get to one, and I haven't heard of one taking place around me. If so, It'd probably be in Seattle or Portland. Then I might have a hard time getting a ride.:(

Does anyone know if there are any anime conventions coming up in Atlanta? I never thought of Georgia to have a good convention...
Well I'm sorry to inform you that so fair in the convention list there are no more anime conventions in Georgia the last one happened over the week of the 26 in September. And since the release list only goes up to December you'll probably have to wait till next year before another convention in Georgia happens.

Sorry to inform you of that sad news. :(

I've never exactly been to one before, but I'm hoping to learn about one this year in Maryland that I can go to. As for the costumes, it's a cool idea, but their quality in clothes is pathtic and it makes them look like, erm...stupid people. o_O

Mist--

As far as I know, there is only one anime convention near here happening anytime soon. It's at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Rosemont (just outside of Chicago). They're holding it from May 16 to 18 of 2003. I've not personally been to this one, or know anyone that has... So I can't tell you much about it :). Here's the site though: http://www.acen.org/

There are other cons around here, but this is the only anime one I know of here... Most are either general sci-fi (some anime), or something totally different such as games or toys.

:) Well yes anime_gurl, it certainly takes more then one day to really enjoy an anime convention. Especially since, each day they hold a different special event, such as cosplay, music videos, and press conferences.

With my experience at anime coventions I would suggest getting a three-day pass usually they run around $50 bucks....but it's well worth it. :)
