TheShinje
The only thing i have to gripe about, is the fact that we don't celebrate it as much over here, most of the christmas promotions begin about now
Frankie
Unfortuanly we dont celebrate any holidays....EVER so thats soemthign to gripe about i guess
Valen
Same here, they have nothing for thanksgiving up, but yet they have christmas and mardi gras promotions up already... It's pretty annoying hearing christmas music in November... around here, thanksgiving is just another day for our families to fight and gripe about everything... But on the bright side, we do get this week off from school...
Guest Morph
Yeah, this quite annoys me. They have Christmas things up and music playing in all of the stores. Yet, they don't try to do anything for Thanksgiving. While Christmas is only celebrated by a select group of people. But I guess people couldn't give a flip about the unity between the Pilgrims and the Indians. Some world we live in today.

Rhys Mayiessen
All I have to say is that you're actually saying a LATE happy thanksgiving to me! Over here we have thanksgiving at the beginning of October rather than the end of November!:p

Kent
I think thanksgiving is good just because it slows us down and allows the luckiest of us who can be with thier loved ones. I also like the board games thing I read above. (forget who, but good call) Since this thread is up, that means we on the boads noticed thanksgiving, even when the stores and commercials didn't. Theirs gonna be a little football on t.v. but thats about all. The money just isn't in thanksgiving like it is in christmas. But those of us on the boards noticed and seem to enjoy it. That said, I hope you all have a nice holiday. Plus its not international.
enigma
Hmm, thanks-giving eh? We don't having thanks giving here in Australia, so I don't have a clue about what any of you keep talking about. We just have Christmas down here, but every now and then we have a bush turkey come past our house, so we could get some turkey if we want, but now I'm just blabbering incoherent nonsense to everyone. Anyway, I'll just be going now.
Kent
Well in honor of enigma and other people on the boards who are not American, I will give the idea behind thanks giving. (Im sure someone's gonna have a field day with this.) Thanksgiving is supposed to be based around the story of the first group of english settlers that kept a settlement alive to be the begins of America. Story is that sometime into the first settlers stay, after the point where women had been brought to the colony. The Europeans (Im gonna call 'em euros) It was the worst winter yet, and those winters were killing off bad numbers in a small population. Things were at their bleakest when the indians befriended the settlers taught them about growing vegetables of the area. (corn and pumpkin amongst other things.) Used all of the vegetables and turkeys and what not. And had "a wonderful feast, all together." (thats my quick way to say it, theres nothing offical.) The settlers managed after that day and made it through the winter, eventually growing to become America. Thats it. The idea of being with friends and family and enjoy the bounty of life. One day every year. I think its the last thursday of every november. In cultural terms its closer to a winter harvest feast. That being the time before winter when cultures of colder areas tend to down size their live stock to do many beneficial actions, including gaining wieght, to prepare for the winter. Manic Webb
Originally posted by Morph But I guess people couldn't give a flip about the unity between the Pilgrims and the Indians.
Unity between the Pilgrims and Indians, slaughtering of the Indians by the Pilgrims. Six of one, half a dozen of the other. What's the difference? The holiday is founded on the idea of the early American settlers surviving a harsh winter, reminding Americans to give thanks for the things they have. I'm all for giving thanks to what I have. That's why I celebrate the holiday. While the more popular version of the story says that the Native Americans and the settlers shared a big turkey dinner together, there's another version of the story that says the early settlers killed the natives and pretty much pillaged them. I'm part native american, so sometimes I feel like I shouldn't celebrate the holiday because of the other story. So I just use Thanksgiving as an excuse to gain weight and thank my deity of choice that I have what I have.
PiroMunkie
Thanksgiving is an okay holdiay. Not one of my favorites. This year i am going over to my aunt and uncle's (on my father's side) house. I always enjoy doing that. I go over there every other year for Thanksgiving, and every year for Santa Day. They are moving further away in a few years, so this will be one of the last times. It is going to be pretty bad in my opinion. It is the only chance I get to see them really, and the only chance I get to play pool. I am staying over and my father's as well. I shall probably post more details about what actually went on Thanksgiving night... if I remember to come back here and do such. :p
Kent
Well, like I mentioned above. It was someone elses story. Not exactly historical fact. I did say someone was gonna have a hard time with it. I know its not a hot topic. I also know what the english did to the native americans. (eventually it became an entire nation of people) I hope you guys can manage the story part with a grain of salt. The points we made about the celebration were basically the same, althought thinking back, I do see myself leaving out the exact words of "thanks" which is rediculous. Any way, its about thanks. I gotta say though, I can see a moral delemma with being part native american.

Mitch
You want to know what I think of Thanksgiving, eh? Well, I think it's a pointless holiday, although it may be good in one right: No school. Heh. Sure that didn't surprise anyone... It's really nothing it gripe about, I mean, we eat some food, eat some more food, and then sit around, and slowly, eat more food. Well, at least that's all it is to me :)
vegeta rocker
Well after today i lose com.....no......anyway, yeah today is last day of school till Thanksgiving. I think i will honor it by watching Squanto:A warrior's tale, i hate Thanksgiving but hey i should remember what it's about. If only those Indians had pushed those pilgims off their shore. Oh well, if anyone here hasn't seen this movie you definetly should.
PiroMunkie
Well, just as I said, I am posting here again with what went on today. ^_^ My father picked me up around noon, and we went to my aunt and uncle's house. As I always do, I went downstairs and munched on the chips and dip they always have. Drank some pop. Played some pool. I have noticed I play better when I am playing against someone who is actually good at it. o_O My sister is horrible. I play okay against her, but then I played a game against my step-sister's boyfriend. He is pretty good. Better than me, but I played a much better game. I had one ball left by the time he sunk the eight ball. After a while we had dinner. Then I went down and played some more pool. Hten we left to my step-mom's sister's house where we ate again. After we ate I played Mario Tennis until we left. Now I am here, at my father's house where I shall be staying over. Good ol' broadband connection. ^_^
vegeta rocker
Well mine went moderately well. We didn't have to cook since one of my mom's clients brought us stuff. I slept through my time off. I'm thinking of burying the turkey so we don't continue to eat it until the next one.
