Insomnia

No. Not really. If you're think ing about something a lot, you can't sleep regardless of what you try. You have to kind of clear your mind, without actually thinking about it.. which is something I have yet to ever actually be able to do with intention.

Apart from that, nothing really works, except maybe if there's a placebo effect in there somewhere..

I think Deus has the best advice there- don't worry about it. If you're conscious of it, you descend into a vicious cylce of sorts, getting more and more paranoid about not being able to get to sleep, and then not sleeping as a cause of that.

What can help is tensing all of your muscles up, holding them for a few seconds and then letting go. Do that a few times to get your muscles tired. Doing a bit of exercise (say, sit-ups or running up and down stairs a few times) not only relaxes your body, but starts to disengage your mind from conscious thought, enabling you to get to sleep quicker.

Another thing to do is eat before you go to bed. I can never sleep on a empty stomach, and you wake up feeling bad too. Hope this helps.

I remember that tensing thing--something one of my high school teachers taught me. It's pretty easy.

Find a flat and quiet area to lie one. You might want to get a small pillow to rest your head, but try not to get one that will elevate your head above your shoulders. What you do is tense each part of your body for a few seconds (start with toes, then foot, ankle, calf, knees, thighs, so on--you save your face for last and tense your nose, mouth, eyes, etc), then let go. Do each area about three times, then close your eyes and picture yourself in your favorite place. The exercise usually lasts about 20 minutes, but it makes you feel as if you got an hour or two of sleep.

Right now, I'm having some nasty nightmares, so it's been hard for me to sleep--not because of insomnia, but because I'm  afraid  to go to sleep. Besides, I don't get rest when I have nightmares. The tensing thing helps, though.

*hugs Ginneh*

I've been having nightmares, too.

Mm.

I never heard of the tensing thing. What my mom used to tell me to do was just concentrate on relaxing each part of your body, starting with toes...and by the time I got to my head, I was always snoozing.

Actually, tho... I don't mind it when I can't sleep. Of course, I know I need sleep, but...

The time before I fall asleep --sometimes a couple hours, sometimes just a few minutes--I spend writing stories in my head. I've always done it, and I enjoy it so much....

I've been having sweet dreams :)

It's clinically proven that stroking a cat soothes your muscles and calms your mind, making it easier for you to fall to sleep. I just stroke my cat for a while and I fall asleep, although she still wants attention, lol.

If you haven't got a cat I suggest staying up and just thinking.. that's what I did 'till 4am :)

Hmm...

My main problem is that when I'm tired I just force myself to stay up and finish whatever I'm doing. After a while I cross that line between tired and right out dead, and by then I couldn't sleep if I wanted to. I'm just kind of there, if you know what I mean.

Whenever I want to fall asleep and can't, I put in Nightmare Before Christmas. I have a lot of good memories from watching that movie with other people, so it relaxes me and I fall asleep. Obviously that won't work for everyone... But I'm sure you have something that does that to you if you think hard enough.

Edit: One of my ex-girlfriends does that tensing stuff... She claimed it worked really well, and so did timing your breathing. I can't exactly remember how that worked though, I'd have to ask her.

I like scary 'ooh, that was creepy' nightmares. It's the sickening kind that are slowly killing me.

About timing your breathing, or whatever...I've never tired it while going to sleep, but to relax I sometimes breathe on counts of seven.

In-two-three-four-five-six-seven
hold-two-three-four-five-six-seven
out-two-three-four-five-six-seven

Forces you to breathe slowly.

I hate that insomniac feeling. Sometimes I stay up so late, I start to ramble and talk to myself (more than usual, anyway). I end up staying awake all night and watching (gasp) late night television. Total Gym infomercials and that one motivational speaker guy's infomercials can put me right to sleep at times.

Yeah, exercise is a good way to tire yourself, and eating works just as well. Don't do them back-to-back, though. Trust me, it doesn't work that way. :)

Uh, anyway, I suggest reading when you're having problems falling asleep. During my break between classes today I wanted to catch a little shut-eye in the campus center on one of the couches, but just couldn't get comfortable. So, I broke out the "Literary Masterpieces" book and began to read "Beowulf." I was out halfway down the second page.

I'll never have to do that at home though. Whenver I go to bed, the cat follows and lies next to me, lol.

I'm really not a good sleeper at all. I let my mind think and wander all to often. It just makes it harder to sleep. I usually try to think of any ideas for poem and stories. I also usually bust out a book, write a poem, or watch T.V. But usually I have trouble sleeping, unless I had a tiring day. Then I can usually get to sleep.

I don't have trouble sleeping a school, though. I do it occasionaly in classes which I loathe :)

I like thinking about things, putting them into place. It's really entertaining, and it gives me more meaning to my life, I suppose.

Also, I never dream. Well, I take that back. I do, but I so vaguely remember anything, that it all doesn't make sense.

Well, I usually try to fight sleep during the night...and at school during the day I sleep nearly all of the time...so insomnia isn't really a problem for me. So, I feel sorry for those that can't get to sleep when they want to.

But I find that staring at one spot on a wall or ceiling for a while helps. You'll start yawning after a few minutes of it, and eventually you'll go sleepy.

I liked Beowulf. :)

If I can't fall asleep, I just concentrate on trying to stay awake and, for some reason, that makes me fall asleep very fast.

Yes, but after you've read it so many times, it becomes easy z's. Especially when you're tired, lol.

But, for anyone who's absolutely thrilled by Beowulf, I suggest finding something to read that bores you to death. Then again, even if the story doesn't bore you to death, staring down and reading will usually do the trick. I think that it's just the task of reading something with heavy eyes that put me to sleep, rather than relying on the actual text to do so.

Phisical exauhstion (sp?)

Lots of tiring exercise. No matter what it is. It always makes me tired if I go running for a long time or have alot of sex.

Either way, phisically get tired and the mind will want it.

But you have to wanna get some sleep.

Oh yea, one more thing.
