SS5 Gogeta
Yes I know to some people think it sounds weird to state something like this when Retro Studios haven't made many games but in my opinion they are very talented and they have the potential to make the greatest GC games that us gamecubers have been waiting for. I also like them because they take the time to make the games great instead of just coming out with stuff because they want to make money. I think they should make a remake of SpyHunter, or other racing games and im also glad that their working on some adventure and RPG titles as well. I also like Capcom as well for making the Resident Evil Series exclusive to GC. What do you guys think?
Desbreko
Well, Metroid Prime is going to get Retro Studios a lot of praise all by itself, heh. I actually haven't played any of their games besides Metroid Prime (do they have any others out, even?), but if their other games are anywhere near as good as it is, they're going to do very well for themselves.
Semjaza
Well Retro had never made anything before Metroid Prime. They were started by Jeff Spangenburg (forget how to spell it, I think he was from Acclaim), as a Nintendo second party. Meaning Nintendo owned part of them, and funded them. No one really knew what to expect, but then all these rumors of problems within the company started coming out... They had a few games going, three of which people have seen some of - a football game, Raven Blade and a car combar game (Thunder Rally is the supposed name). They all wound up being cancelled because of all the problems, most of which seem to have stemmed from Jeff. All those games were put on hold (or just cancelled, no one knows really), and Nintendo gave them Metroid because Miyamoto felt they could do a good job with it. The team at that point was made up of a LOT of FPS veterans from Valve, Iguana and such. Zoid being the most well known, as he did a lot of work with id. Anyway, Nintendo was impressed with Retro... They wound up buying out Jeff for a tiny one million dollars (by comparison Rare was sold for like over $300 million). And now you see the end result. A lot of people claim it's only this good because Nintendo helped them, but Nintendo couldn't do everything. The art and design mostly seems to have orginated from Retro based on the concept art I've seen. It just seems like Nintendo itself kind of guided them through what they thought the best ideas were (and did the music). So they are a first party, since Nintendo owns the company completely. There will be no Spy Hunter games, mostly because that isn't a Nintendo license. I'd like to see what else they can do though... I'm hoping for a standard FPS, which I know they could do an amazing job on.
SS5 Gogeta
Your probably right about the not making SpyHunter but they could probably make games that are even better.
James
It's definitely clear that FPS-style games are Retro's forte (based on both the staff history and Metroid Prime itself). So, that is possibly an area which Retro could explore more deeply in the future. But also, Nintendo may use Retro for art and character development as well as environment design for its own games. Now that Retro is a first party, Nintendo can probably afford to have it working on one game at a time whilst also providing various support to other NCL developers. I don't think Retro will ever grow to Rare-proportions, but ideally the company would be making two or three games at a time. Given the company's massive success with Metroid Prime (and the experience gained from it), the bar has been set very high. Hopefully Retro will come out with some amazing games in the future. At the very least, I think Retro have probably done a better job on Metroid than Rare could have done (which isn't really relevant...but many consider that Retro will now become Nintendo's star developer outside Japan).
Sniglefager
I was shocked. I'd never even HEARD of Retro Studios until now. If they have any other games out(I'm pretty sure the don't) someone, PLEASE TELL ME!!!!!!I need to play their games. After seeing how good Metroid Prime was.......I just hope one thing: This doesn't turn out to be a Tomb Raider type of thing, where they try and make one new Metroid game every year, and eventually start making bad Metroid games. It would be a cold day in h*** when there's a bad Metroid game, but after Prime's success, it could very well happen. I shudder to think
Desbreko
Lol...you really think Nintendo would let them do that to one of their most popular series? I sure don't think so. Nintendo has this thing about "quality over quantity," so I don't think that's going to happen...ever. However, I would like to see another 3D Metroid game like Metroid Prime. I doubt there's going to be another one any time soon, though, since it took so long to develop Prime.
SS5 Gogeta
I'm not sure what other games they're making but they could do a hell of a good job with there abilities for level design and details and showing off the true potential of GCN
Sniglefager
What about Mario is Missing. Sure, it was an edutainment game, and it was supposed to teach kids stuff, I really don't think that game should have ever been created. And let us not forget about what happened to the CD-i Zelda games. AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
Desbreko
Yeah, but Mario is Missing wasn't in the main series. And also, Nintendo didn't have anything to do with the CD-i Zelda games. Their partnering of sorts with Philips gave Philips partial rights to Nintendo's franchises, letting them develop a Zelda game.
Sniglefager
Still, Nintendo should have never given them permission. Those are the worst games I've ever played
Semjaza
You're comparing Eidos to Nintendo. Stop and think about that for a second lol. Mario is Missing was also made by another company outside of Nintendo, mostly to help sell edutainment titles to Mario fans. No one should count that as a Nintendo made game. The CD-i stuff was because of broken contracts, and there wasn't much stopping those. No one really counts those as Mario or Zelda games either, for good reason. Spikey
I think that they have come out with some pretty decent games. My friends owns a lot of games made from that company. Did I hear you mention Capcom? Capcom's practiculy my favorite video game maker. It's just the games that they have made. Thousand Arms was really good. I don't understand why a lot of people think Capcom is horrible. They have came out with really decent games. Back to the subject. I don't think Retro Studios is the best that GC worked with. Some of the games they have made, did get literly poor. But the ideas they got for the games were outstanding.
Semjaza
You are very mistaken. As I said before, and I think others have. They have never completed ANY game outside of Metroid Prime. There were other games in development that were dropped, but that happened with every company. Anyone that claims to own another Retro Studios game is lying or mistaken.
