The 'Future' of the boards

I'm actually not too sure...

I think there's a few ways things could happen along the boards. One, things could get better, like... the people's post quality will get better, along with the content and language. Or, it could get worse, and the people's post quality will get worse, and the content/grammar will get a little worse than there is now.

More members could join, or go away... People might fade away, but then again, more people will join the otaku community.

The mods could get stricter, or less stricter. They might not have to be as strict, because the post may become cleaner, and more productive.

Anything can happen... I guess it just depend on us, and the way we keep the boards clean. ^_^ From what I've heard, we don't want another otaku war starting, now do we?

I'm pretty sure that I won't be here in 3-4 years.....I'll most likely have a girlfriend, a car (Bwahahahaaa....:demon: ), and other stuff to worry about....but you never know.

As for the future of these boards, I'm sure they'll be around for longer then 4 years. Just worry about it when the time comes.

It's always interesting to read the rumors and stuff. Do you want to know how I really got this job?

I started working for theOtaku.com years ago, originally doing some writing for Absolute GameBoy and Absolute SEGA (which didn't end up lasting very long).

I did actually have an account on v1, but I rarely ever posted. When we moved to v2, I had already spent some time working in a senior role at theOtaku.com and Adam decided to give me an Admin position on the boards. Of course, during the course of v2, we had a very different system.

Rather than just one Admin, we had about four or five. I even appointed a couple during my time on v2. We very much had a "group management" strategy. But due to the fact that our security was comparitively low at that time, when we moved to v3...we decided to have only two Admins. Adam and myself.

And since then, that's how it's been. So that's the real story, for those who are interested. ^_^

As for what happens in the future...who knows. Adam spends a great deal of time and money to keep theOtaku/OB alive. He spends hundreds of dollars per month on all of these sites.

In fact, some will remember that we used to have a banner advertisement on v3. But because people complained about it, Adam took the ads down. The result is that OB now earns no revenue at all. It runs at a 100% loss. And Adam absorbs that loss himself, so that people here don't have to put up with banner ads.

I don't know many site owners who'd do that. ~_^

I am personally amazed at how long this whole thing has lasted. I don't think either Adam or I ever had any notion of how long these sites could survive. But here we are today...as strong or stronger than ever.

theOtaku.com is blossoming in ways that I don't think anyone could have expected. And by early 2003, you will find theOtaku.com to be even more impressive.

I don't know when Adam will decide to call it quits. If he ever does, it's likely that he will sell theOtaku.com to someone. I think it's more likely that OtakuBoards will survive longer than theOtaku, because Adam does not need to maintain OB whatsoever. So it's just a financial cost.

Still, I don't think anyone has to worry. Both sites will be around for a while yet.

I was indeed planning to "retire" my job at OB after the launch of v6. But things have changed since then. For one thing, I was planning to devote more of my time to ShineGet.com. But that site is not going to go forward, because by about February of next year I just won't have the time.

Instead, you'll see me getting back into theOtaku.com, like I used to. I'll continue to run OB for the forseeable future, but I may end up hiring someone to run the site from day to day if I become less active (and I probably will within the next couple of months). So that means that I'll be running the boards in the long term, but from day to day you may have a different Administrator. Who knows at this point.

Anyway, that was a long post...but I thought I'd clarify the rumors and such. ^_^

Assuming I can kick Raven off the computer every now and again, and don't get banned for being an antagonistic firebreather *looks apprehensively at the growing number people who are annoyed at him*, I'll be here for quite a while. Probably take a few more extended absences though. I doubt you'll all object...

You guys also should go to other places to so that you don't get bored by otaku so you?ll always stay, always you?ll never leav.. Um I mean.. Um.. hmm? Yes....

In the words of Erin Dingo. (Who lived just across the road from us.)
"There's a whole Internet out there, go on, get out there!"
Not the Internet part of course...

AND JAMES YOU RUINED OUR ROUMOR MIL!!! *Runs off crying?*
Oh well thanks for the history lesson. :P

Whirlpool is one I can think of where the webmasters absorb the cost but that?s about it and I know a damn few sites.

What sort of hits does theotaku and otakuboards get may I ask?

[Edited - Added]
My Real life Magic 8-Ball says.. *Gives it a shake.*
Will OtakuBoards be around forever?
8-Ball: Very Doubtful.
DAMNIT Okay I'll try again...
8-Ball: Better not tell you now.
GRR
8-Ball: My reply is NO!

Hay wait, I just go told by a magic 8-ball...

Well there?s your answer, the 8-ball has spoken.
(Thanks to Lilac who gave it to me.)
If you want to ask the magic 8-ball a question feel free to do so. :P

Hits? Interesting question. lol

I don't want to get into specifics (I'm not sure if Adam would like that or not), but I can give you some ballpark figures.

In terms of hits, theOtaku.com receives several million per day. Of course, hits do not relate to individual visitors.

theOtaku.com averages anywhere between 25,000 and 30,000+ unique visitors per day.

So that only includes individual people and doesn't include someone who visits over and over again in one day.

OB is another matter entirely. I have no idea what this site's hits/visits are on a daily basis; the best you can do is look at the Currently Active Users list, to get an idea of how many members/guests we have browsing.

*Looks at James*

30,000+, James that is a damn big ball park you got there. In fact bigger than the ballpark that made Yahoo rich. Although I have noticed that #theotaku gets allot of people there every day, and always new ones. So I guess I could believe it.

*/Me feels sorry for the poor server...*

I say 30,000+ because at peak periods we've had over 50,000 in a day. I think we used to average somewhere around 65,000.

But that was when we had gaming sections as well.

So yeah, the numbers do change over time...but luckily they've remained pretty strong over the years generally.

It is kind of stupid to worry about the future of the boards and who it would be passed down to. theOtaku.com and otakuboards.com are Adam's creations (along with James, and a slew of others, help) and he will do what he feels is best for the otaku community and himself. Adam and James are both bright individuals...don't worry about the otaku community...it is in good hands.

Exactly.

That many?!?   Dang, glad I didn't know that till AFTER I retired from the site! That kinda pressure'd drive me nutso. I was thinking in the range of several hundred each day, but heh....and now that Pojo.com stopped doing Digimon, it's more important than ever that theOtaku.com/Digimon catch up.

Um you must have some damn big lines to your server...?
What Os is it running?

Ok okay for topic... hmm.

Well if it's running at a loss it will run until Adam runs out of money or he decide to put more than that one banner ad up.

The Internet is such a volatile environment, there's no telling what the future holds...

One thing though - James, your visitor numbers are slightly off ;). I don't really keep track of that though so anyone's guess is as good as mine.

50 people have asked... how sad...

*Watches every one take sides*

*Takes popcorn off Harlequin*

(This is sort of signifying that this thread is dead, unless ADAM has any thing more to say... Common you know you want to post.)
