Sephiroth
From IGNCube Quote: Link / SC2 Update Hey, you said that awhile ago that link was in Soul Calibur 2, but everywhere else I go has no mention of that. Were you wrong, or has there been an update on it that I missed, or what? Matt responds: We reported that Link of Zelda fame would be in Namco's upcoming 3D fighter Soul Calibur 2 as a playable character, yes. You haven't heard much about it since because Namco has been keeping it quiet. But the good news is that it still stands. In fact, whereas we originally thought Link would be an unlockable character in Soul Calibur 2, it turns out he'll be fully playable from the start. On another note, the PlayStation 2 version of Soul Calibur 2 will feature an exclusive playable character too: Spawn. The same can be said about the Xbox version, but I'm not sure which character will be exclusive in that one. Perhaps Blinx? I kid, I kid. Expect more news on Soul Calibur 2, including official announcements regarding these character exclusives, early next year. End quote. Wtf, Link for GC and Spawn for PS2, I know there were fake screenshots and such a while back, but can anyone clear this?
Semjaza
There weren't fake per se (well not in the usual sense)... They were mockups IGNCube made based on their original news of Link being in the game several months ago. Namco denies the rumor up and down though, so who knows what will happen. I'm rather annoyed that GC won't get Spawn though. Assuming this is true.
Sniglefager
Even though I'd like to believe Link will be in the GCN version, don't get your hopes up. Same for Spawn. If this rumour does come true, I will be totally pleased and buy the PS2 and GC versions. But, I'm guessing this was just another false statement. If any of you have ever seen how many people put fake codes on how to un-lock fake charecters in the origianal Super Smash Bros. you'd see why I doubt this rumour
Charles
Quite honestly, I have never been impressed with Soul Calibur 2. It appears to be a rehash of its predecessor. The new characters, from what impressions I've read, are nothing more than reincarnations of older characters. With the emergence of strong competition in the genre, (i.e., Virtua Fighter 4, Tekken 4, Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance, etc.) I'm hoping that Namco will be forced to overhaul the game. The same old mechanics and thin campaign mode just won't cut it any longer. In any case, I went deep undercover and risked my life to secure a screen shot of Spawn in Soul Calibur 2. Enjoy. Sniglefager
All right you know what? That pic is TOTALLY fake. I mean, seriously, you couldn't fool anyone with that.
Semjaza
That's awful. Anyway, as it stands SC is still the only 3D fighter I've ever truly liked. As long as the sequel is anything like it, I don't care. I'll be happy. It's been long enough of a wait.

Dude, SC2 is different from SC1, when it first came out in the arcades and I used Nightmare, he was given so much new stuff that I just didn't know what the hell I was doing with him anymore until I went on practice SC2 is beginning to have a bigger fan base than VF4 and T4 to be honest, for some reason a lot of Tekken Tag players were disgusted with T4 and moved to SC2, no complaints heard from them since SC2 has went through several versions, where Namco kept improving the game, fixing glitches, changing a character perhaps, Cervantes is a good example, he was so poor in Version C it wasn't even funny, he is a little bit better in Version D at least Now....what was I saying again? Omg CWB has a screenshot of Spawn in SC!!! It looks so authentic! Hehe
Charles
Seph, I think that you're a bit confused. I wasn't comparing Soul Edge to Soul Calibur; I was comparing Soul Calibur 2 to Soul Calibur 1. lol. And yes, that picture proves that some of your most breaking news stories aren't on major video game sites or in publications, but right here at otakuboards. ^^;;
Turkey
Normally, I would doubt Matt's words. However, he shut us all up with the Rare incident, so I think we should give him a chance. The rights for Spawn wouldn't be so hard to get, and Namco's relation with Nintendo has been getting better.
Guest QuickSilver
i read in one of my magazines that Star Fox will also be on the GCN version, I sure hope so then that gives me a better reason for buying the GameCube version.
Solo Tremaine
Even though Star Fox has been leased to Namco for the 3D shoot-em-up, it seems unlikely they'd put him in SC2 without some serious redesigning. He's just not the right style visually for that kind of beat em up. I'm not saying it's impossible, I just think it's unlikely. I think the game could lose some popularity if they see Namco borrowing characters from other companies. I think purists may well see it as 'dumbing down' the wonderful fantasy style and name they that SC has, seeing as Link and Fox are sort of... cartoony, for want of a better word. Semjaza
Well I'd have to assume they'd create a realistic model of Link for SC2. Something like the old Spaceworld video of Link and Ganondorf fighting. A few tweaks and the Link model would fit into SC's style perfectly. Fox isn't really possible given the style. Spawn is, only because of characters like Inferno. Would be interesting to see. Wonder if they'd keep his cape...
Charles
Yes, I feel that if they include Link, there will be no Star Fox. Even if Link doesn't make it, Fox is a long shot, lol. Link wields a sword, and as Semjaza mentioned, he can possibly mesh with the artistic style. Fox, for the most part, uses a gun. I'm sure that they could equip him with the staff he used in StarFox Adventures, but his design is too childish for the game. Plus, I doubt that Namco wants to make the game too much like SSBM. O.o;;

Charles
I am indeed eating my words this time. Semjaza has shown me some new screens from Soul Calibur 2...and it looks amazing. So, I've decided to host them and show them to you. The shading and texture quality look amazing. Plus, it looks as if the environments are more expansive. Anyway, I'm most excited about the exclusives for each system. The rumors were indeed true; Link will appear in the GameCrap version, Spawn will appear in the Xlax incarnation, and Heihachi will be present in all his splendor on the Playsuck 2. Semjaza
I thought that banner would be the worst thing I ever saw... but it actually kicks *** haha. Anyway... The fourth additional character is Necrid. He is that green guy in a couple of the shots. He was also designed by McFarlane apparently. Can't say I'm impressed with him. He'll be in all three versions though.
Desbreko
I knew it...they made Link's tunic too damn short. I just knew they were going to do that. *wanders off muttering random curses against Namco*
Turkey
Finally! I've been searching for minutes for those pics! Noe that I look at them, I have just one gripe: As Desbreko said, that tunic is too darn small!
Sniglefager
whoa, so this wasn't a joke? But that means I'm gonna have to buy both the PS2 and Game Cube versions....poopies
James
You're now eating your words, Charles? Why? Because the game looks impressive? Didn't you say that your reasons for disliking it were gameplay-based? Hmm... ~_^ Anyway, I was a big fan of SC, which is saying quite a lot (I rarely buy fighting games -- I haven't been a big fan of the genre since the 16-bit days). And so, I'm looking forward to SCII. I'm definitely going to pick up the GCN version. The fact that the game is primarily targeted at GameCube as well as the fact that it should play really nicely with the GCN controller (not to mention the whole Link thing, heh) just pushes it over the edge for me. I usually only buy about one fighting game per "generation". Soul Calibur II will probably be my only purchase for the latest generation (if you exclude Dreamcast, of course)...with the exception of maybe MK: Deadly Alliance (since I was always such a huge fan of that series, until Midway destroyed my dreams with MK4). Oh, and the pair of you complaining about Link's tunic; get a life! God...a few centimeters off and the world comes crumbling down. It looks fine to me and I've been a Zelda fan since before both of you could even say "Zelda". Deal with it.
