Best game to date?

The question that many new Playstation 2 owners ask themselves is what is the best game out in the shops?

I think that GTA 3 has to be the best game that has been released. It has a great storyline. However it also lets you divert from the main plot by letting you go on killing sprees and all sorts.

What do you think is the best game to date? Please give your reasons like i have.

Well I definetely think That GTA 3 was the best game at it's specific time in release, but now I think there has been an improvement! The next release GTA Vice City has been an improvement with bikes and helicopters, the fact you can actually do something with the money you own. You can roam around some buildings now and much more.

Vice City was supposed to be much bigger than GTA 3 (It has like 5 islands, but I can't say it's too much bigger), it does have a few more vehicles and more weapons. I think it has more hours on the radio!?!

GTA 3 I feel had more missions, gangs and grannys which was cool and funny! :D

Overall Vice City equals best PS2 game to date at the moment in my eyes. :demon:

I think this is the most subjective of all questions on the forum.

If you ask me, the best game to date is one that achieves its goal and then goes beyond that.

Grand theft auto is close, but it does have techinical flaws which hold it back in terms of overall quality.

I also think that alot of the games out there that are the best in their genres, but dont get any credit for being the greatest.

Look at ace combat 4. Truely a beautiful game, technically accurate, perfect graphics, realistic simulation qualities, and a touch of arcade "after burner style" fighter jet fun.

With all that, the game still gets no credit from anyone that isn't a complete junkie for flight sims.

So where does this leave me in picking a greatest game to date.

Frankly... it leaves me lost.

I would perfer to give a "best game in this catergory" sort of opinion as done before in another thread.

But since I wanna go with the trend and give a game for best released to date, and I havent gotten my hands on gran turismo 3.

Im gonna have to say "Ace Combat 4." Its the perfect game for ME. I always wanted to fly an F-14 and with this game I can.

If I gave another game credit...
grand theft auto 3/ vice
navy seals: socom
lord of the rings: the two towers (just a little too short)

Those are the honorable mentions with countless others which I will be back with an edit to mention.

Of what I've seen my cousin/guyfriends play.. I really enjoyed:

1) Resident Evil: Code Veronica- I couldn't sleep for days. @_@;
2) Lord of the Rings: Two Towers- Scenes were awesome! They could've included a little more leggy though. ^_-
3) Final Fantasy X- I only saw a little bit, and my friends wouldn't explain what the controls did, so... I got killed around the first level, I think. o_o;
4) Virtua Fighter 4- omg! I still stand the undefeated champion of my cousin's house for the last... year! ^_^;;
5) SNK vs. Capcom- I love capcom, and am a huge fan of SNK; King of fighters, sooo... what else is there to say?

Alot of PS2/PS1 games were pretty kewl, but I really can't play Playstation for more than an hour or so. The controls hurt my fingers. ><

This is an impossible thing to judge. You couldn't compare a Game like SSX Tricky to a game like Timesplitters 2. They're both great, great games, but there's no comparing them. One's a Snowboarding Game, the Other an FPS.

And then there's what we're judging it on... Graphics, Music, Gameplay... o_o;;

I'll just shut up and say Team Buddies was the best game ever. Heh.

I think the best game to be released so far (in my own experience) is Silent Hill 2.

I think GTAIII/VC are two of the most overrated games on the system. They are good games, but they are not revolutionary by any measure.

The reason I choose Silent Hill 2 is simply because of the clever story/environment/sound design. Silent Hill 2 manages to achieve the goal that even Resident Evil has not come nearly as close to; providing the most horrifying experience in a video game. The sound design in particular is so well executed and the lighting is yet to be beaten in my opinion (even Splinter Cell doesn't best SH2's lighting in my opinion, even though it does come close).

Other than SH2, I'd choose maybe GT3. But I'd only choose GT3 purely for its superb technical design, which has yet to be beaten by any other racing/driving game.

As far as gameplay is concerned...perhaps ICO. ICO is definitely a hidden gem; not enough people bought it. It's really a wonderful little game.

Other than that, I really enjoyed SSX. I've never really liked extreme sports/sports games (at least since Tony Hawk on N64), but I really enjoyed both SSX and SSX: Tricky. Very good games.

Most overrated games apart from GTA? Probably Onimusha and Devil May Cry. Don't get me wrong; both were great games. But Onimusha was simply Resident Evil with slightly better combat and a much more boring and less engaging story. The visuals were gorgeous...but honestly, I played for 15 minutes and already felt as though it was a dressed up RE. I don't get what all the fuss is about.

As for DMC...it's kind of a similar scenario. The game was great (boss fights were amazing and the visuals were incredible), but a lot of stuff felt gimmicky. The ability to shoot in the air for example (and the music changes), while cool, were really void of substance in terms of gameplay. So I don't know, I preferred it a LOT more than Onimusha...but I wouldn't say that it was the best game in the world either.

Out of these I'd agree with Silent Hill, VF4 and CvS2... The rest did little for me, and I'm not really into flight games.

For me, the best game on PS2 is still Frequency. I've not had as much fun with any game on the system, or any other current generation system either. It seems so simple, and there is somewhat of a learning curve... but the game is very original and once you get good at it, it's a great single and multiplayer experience. The harder levels especially.

I think that Tekken 4 is the best right now. The game is outstanding. It has acctually a story mode this time.

There are so many mini-games that you can choose from. Such as Tekken Force, and others. Also when you go to story mode, it tells you how the certain charcter got to the The King of the Iron Fist Tournament 4. Also, the nerarator, he is just cool. His voice. There are a load of new charcters, and a lot of new stages. There are the classic charcters to, like Law and King. Although, King is a lot different from the other King's on the other games.

Also, it is very difficult. Even on easy, it is amazingly hard for easy. It makes you think of a strategy, and work hard. Kind of unlike most other boring fighting games. Tekken has a great history with there other Tekken games, but I personnaly think they have done so good on Tekken 4. Though we all do have are other opionions.

I got Tekken 4 when it came out. I agree that it is a really good game but after a while it gets a bit repetative. Don't you think?

Tekken force mode is impossible, has anybody completed it? The furthest that i have got is at the very end of the Mishima corridor.

Having completed story mode over and over again i don't think that Tekken 4 is the best game out there.

The best game isn't always the newest, I think a lot of people will agree with me there. For example Smackdown 2 on the playstation was a lot better than Smackdown 3 on the PS2.

Blade, please read the rules. We don't allow double posting here at OtakuBoards (unless there is a special circumstance, which we talk about in the rules). They don't take long to read and they're really worthwhile so that these mistakes aren't made.

I'll remove your original post, since your second post is an edit and not an entirely new post.

Well I don't know about the best game out there, but it sure is my favorite. It may get repetative for you for several reasons. Do you have anyone else to play with? And I take it from the Tekken topic that you don't know how to juggle either. Working juggles is a fun part of the game. Try joining TZ and working out some matches on the forum. You will see how much more there is to learn.

But Smackdown 4 is better than both of them. :p

Anyway, I simply can't chose what the best game to date is. You need to be a little more specific. Like best First Person Shooter, Best Fighter, Best RPG, Best Andventure, and so on.

Anyway here is my list.

---------------------------------------------------------

FPS: Red Faction

Fighter: Tekken 4

RPG: Final Fantasy X (It's the only RPG I played on the ps2)

Adventure/Action: Dead to Rights

Platformer: Rachet and Clank

Eh, that is all I can think of right now. I might edit this later.

I despised Silent Hill 2. I loved the first one for the PSX but Silent Hill 2 failed in my opinion. I never got really far, that could be the reason. I was over at my friends larry's house when his brothers brought it home. Keep in mind his brothers are very good at games. We sat down and started playing. It was cool at first and I admit the fog scared me. But, all you get is a plank with some nails in it. We thought it's ok, no worries we will get a gun later. About 30 minutes passed, we found some bullets. But, no gun. It was horrible. We just put it away and never opened it again. It's still in their closet. :shifty:

Yeah, you didn't get very far. Maybe 1% into the game. lol

It's very quiet for the first 15 minutes or so, until you really get into it. You came close to the point where it actually starts though...you virtually didn't pass the "press start" screen. lol

I haven't really played Silent Hill 2 and I only played SH1 on a demo which came free with MGS and that was freaky enough. I can't really compare Resident Evil to the Silent Hill 2 then, but I will go with your word that it's better than RE. Plus I have the Gamecube version of RE so I'm not much help there, but I'm looking forward to RE0 and RE4 they will hopefully be big hits.

As for PS2 MGS2 is really good and all with superb graphics, but I just think it's too short and a heck load of cut scenes that tended to confuse me lol. Not complaining they were good (a funny one was when colenol went crazy) and there were loads on MGS as well, but the game itself was alot longer. They both had good plots and MGS2: Subtstance should be a good contender for this section.

Too many good games are really short and I can't really pick an ultimate game for the PS2. *Tries to think of a challenging game* RPGs can probably hook you into a game for longer like the Final Fantasy series, but I get bored with them usually, so probably out of Silent Hill 2 (may buy it to see if it's as good as you say), Vice City (apart from the missions so many more things to do and have fun with, but need to sort out technical flaws!), The Getaway (takes time getting used to, but for me it sure is a heck of fun and cut scenes are excellent with great Londoner accents. Also when your finished you can roam around doing as you wish), Timesplitters 2 (I've got it, so when I get round to playing it, should be a great deal of fun, especially multiplayer) or maybe Splinter Cell when it hits the PS2 in England (as stealth games are usually challenging).

May edit when think of new ones! :demon:

I played that demo aswel, it was at night so it really freaked me out :nervous: I think that its more scary than any of the Resident Evils'. Does anybody agree??? The only drawback was that it is way too hard and takes ages to get anything done.

I think both Silent hills were big hits i have completed the first one and there was several different endings and the music was damn scary and they had cool little puzzles to solve. Silent hill 2 scared me when i saw the zombie down the little tunnel bit at the beginning i think but i havent completed the whole game yet but i think it will be a cool ending and i hope silent hill 3 is just as good.

I enjoy the mind teasing puzzles you approach in Silent Hill 2, they keep me locked onto the game for longer. I haven't played it much yet, but the cut scenes I have seen are excellent! I'm not one to scared in a game like this, I just find it fun. :)

Another game which I have recently borrowed of a mate is FFX. Now here is a series I thought I would never get into just simply because it was a RPG (I shouldn't judge a game like that I know, I just usually prefer action games). I knew all my friends are all addicted to the Final Fantasy series, so I thought what the heck I'll give it a try. Now that I have, I wish I had found interest in this game at a lot earlier stage, but I'm still happy to get into the series now. :)

Thanks, to friends that got me into this game!
