Mobile Handheld MADNESS!

You can take photos with 'em, send emails and of course even make phone calls with mobiles. What next ... Well I will tell you what next - gaming on your mobile will be the next massive thing. You have to see Nokia's new N-Gage, which they're selling purely on its gaming capabilities.

p.s I put this in Nintendo forum as they have the best handheld gear!

I think this could be real BIG in 2003 as long as it ain't too expensive!

What do you all think about this then ... Anyone know anything more about this, because I would be interested to know.

The GBA (even the Gameboy Color) already can handle cell phone technology. There is an addon for the system in Japan that lets users connect to it and go online. It's used in Mario Kart, for example, to trade times and ghosts with people. There'd be no reason to make a new one.

And really, there's nothing special about those phones. The same games can be played on normal color phones, and I can tell you now... they're nothing special (outside of a few pretty good games, Sega ones mostly). This is just a phone orientated to be like a controller. I'm sure it will lead to more games being made, but I don't expect much.

Can I bring up a serious point? Well a few serious points actually. At the moment, I don't think much could contend with the GBA, and if something came near, Nintendo would kill them off by bringing out a new handheld system. Mobile phones/Cell phones, whatever you call them...why do you need them? To make calls and send SMS, correct? Why do you need to pay, around 3 times as much, to get a camera on it. You could by a really nice phone, and a really nice camera for the same price. Hell, if i wanted my mobile to take pictures, I would just strap a disposable camera on the back. It's nonsense. I think, like Semjaza says exists, a handheld system with abilities to dial up to a netwrok and play online from wherever you are, would be great, but honestly...phones are for phoning, game systems are for gaming, I really don't think they belong together, doing eachothers jobs. Imagine ringing your mum up for a chat from a Gamecube?! It's just nonsense.

How does the GBC cellphone thing even work? Can some one explain that to me. I think the N-Cage is just a rumour, as Nokia have done this before.
What is the new game boy coming out, because I read James signature gif. image, and I was wondering if anyone could maybe give me some info on this!

James has done a thread on the GBA SP (the new handheld console coming out) which should give you all the details on this.

I hope this isn't a rumour, even though it probably won't be a great success, but it's plain stupid if it is. Hopefully you can link other games on the N-Gage. :)

Nope, this is no rumour. It's too detailed and planned to be a rumour. Nokia are extremely serious about this.
"Nokia believes that games is the next big thing in mobility. The mobile game deck devices takes us to a new level of mobile interactive gaming, offering totally new and unique possibilities that were not previously available in this quality for publishers or end-users. We are excited to provide rich, high quality games from world known game publishers such as Sega. Sega offers an excellent variety of games with several genres," said Ilkka Raiskinen Senior Vice President, Entertainment and Media Business Unit, Nokia Mobile Phones.
See what I mean. This is for real, and I have a strange feeling in my gut, that it's going to be huge! Or maybe that's just my dinner moving around! ^_^;;;Oh Oh Oh, Check out the design, looks pretty sweet, yet GBA-ish!

Edit: Cajones, Where is James thread, I can't find it anywhere, maybe give me a link next time you want to help?

You were saying how rubbish this would be at first lol. Anyway I didn't think it would be a rumour with the designs I had seen it was technically made already. I'm still scared about how heavy the price will be! Oh and sorry here is the thread- You obviously didn't look very hard lol. :whoops:

Like I said before, if you really read into it... It's a color screened phone orientated like a controller to make it easier to play. It's nothing new, they are just trying to target the games market with their phones rather than the casual market. It's nothing I'd get scared over.

Hell, even PDAs have been doing this stuff. Sony Clie is a good example, and I've seen Pocket PCs that run Tomb Raider better than PSX could. GBA isn't going anywhere though. It has huge market penetration and much cheaper prices on a whole.

Ah, but I'm not going to get it, because I a)dislike Nokia after my new phone broke after a bit. b)I think they are stealing money from the gaming industry. c)I'm may be getting a GBA:SP. It does look impressive however, but as Semjaza said, It's nothing to get scared over! Anyway, what's wrong with being a hypocrite.

Apparently this thing is a lot more powerful than the initial announcements and rumors led me to believe. They've been talking a lot more about it lately, and apparently it's quite a bit stronger than a GBA. Sega, Namco and Konami are apparently all on board to make games for the thing... and are targetting to make games above GBA graphical quality. Apparently the phone can do 3D quite well, using Open GL or something.

The thing costs between 600 to 800 Euros, and while I really have no idea how much that is... It kind of sounds like a lot, especially since that's supposedly more than most color and web enabled phones over there in the first place. I'm not sure on the pricing system for games as of yet. Still the prices kind of make it target other game enabled cell phones moreso than the GBA.

The N-Gage even looks like a GBA. :wigout:

But yeah, really, I don't know how well this device will do. It seems to me that Nokia isn't even really competing directly with Nintendo; the N-Gage seems to be quite a high-end device, aimed at the same sort of people who are purchasing expensive PDAs and other generally useless devices. lol

So, I don't know how this will turn out. Companies like Sega have been producing mobile phone games for years now, so it's no surprise tha they'd support this project. It'll be interesting to see some shots/video of games for this new unit though.

I doubt very highly this will get far, especially over here in England. Networks are talking of scrapping their G3 (third generation) mobile phones because they cost too much and don't really have much use besides games/photos.

Ah, my point earlier phones = phoning. Heh, I guess it's just a total waste of cash really, I mean, by not just buy the GBA, they look pratically the same.
James, I don't any games have been announced yet, but I am in the procedure of looking for them!

You could do that on the Dreamcast. With free long-distance too...

I don't think I really want to carry around my Gamecube as a phone lol, but I can imagine phones as consoles easily! With the dreamcast you could go on the internet, so I'm sure there was a way to make phone calls whether it was good or not I don't know? Did anyone actually do this?

I was reading about an article about the new Gameboy Sp(or whatever it's called). The final line was but it has competition...the N-Gage. I was intrigued. I know that Nokia are producing it with Sega and it will be released Late decemberish(i think). I was wondering if anybody has any factual information on it, i.e price, release date or features.

Well I too just found out some more information on this a few days ago and yes it is definetely going to be released in the 4th quarter of this year sometime. You wanted information well here you go:

Seems to get more and more interesting and yes they are teaming up with SEGA to create games which should be good. They haven't confirmed a price yet, but I'm pretty sure it won't be cheap, which is disapointing! If your looking for a pure handheld gaming console I suggest this isn't what you get (GBA SP will be more your thing), if you want all the addons like a phone, FM radio and music player then this could be your thing if you don't mind spending a bit of cash.

Sony also will be creating a console and maybe even Microsoft with the 'Xboy', but I'm not certain. Microsoft are definetely letting other handheld consoles have mini versions of X-Box games until 2004 after signing a deal with THQ. There are already games such as Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee and Monster Truck Madness.

Well if you have anymore info or opinions please post! :box:
